Why would America want to help Varoufakis? From memeory, US banks were heavily invested in the EU and probably wouldnt want a destabiliser. Otherwise great points about his benefits to Greece

As we can see now (2024) it is apparent that Greece is upgraded to a huge importance pawn on the geopolitical chessboard of the area following the flipping position of Turkey, supply routes to the Balcans and the conflict in the Middle East. All the good reasons to save Greece

Let me see if I got it right. Whe the economy was really bad he took some bold decisions that everybody critiqued, but with time they were proof right.
You propose that he didn't do it out of his own analysis, but rather suggested by some American big brother.
At the same time you propose he's a genius, brilliant mind.
I don't know,, but I trust better the Ockham principle, the simplest explanation being often the right one.
Those 2 benefits (preventing the flee of money and fighting black economy) were easy to see with anticipation and I believe they were discussed at the time and presented as the reason to implement those measures.
At the same time, even if he was a genius he has quite a big ego and probably he thought he could persuade the Greek people about dropping the Euro

Back in 2015 nobody (journalist, analyst, economist Politician from any side of the full political spectrum) comprehended fully the impact of Varoufakis action. He was vilified by practically all and the media focused on the bragging comment he has made to his wife at the time: “Honey I shut the Banks”. But Yanis’s master stroke came 8 years later just before the elections of last summer (2023) when he proposed an alternative monetary system to the Euro. This blew up his own party-MERA25 ( which until his announcement all Polls were suggesting it would enter Parliament) but MORE IMPORTANTLY blew up the Main Opposition party (SYRIZA) which was advocating a coalition government with MERA25

Ο Γιανης κοροιδευε συνεχως τους παντες:Τους Ευρωπαιους, τον μακαριτη τον Σοιμπλε, συλληβδην ολους τους βουλευτες του Συριζα ,ολους τους υπολοιπους βουλευτες, δημοσιογραφους εντος και εκτος Ελλαδος, πολτικους Αναλυτες και μια ολοκληρη χωρα.
