- A comprehensive guide to getting a Xbox One controller working with iRacing. Maybe I'm going stir crazy but I want to know, is it possible to be fast using a controller? With enough practice, who knows, but these settings should help. Do I recommend it? Probably not. Could you maybe get good this way? I think its for sure possible.

Regardless of the potential hate this video may receive, I understand that not everyone can afford a wheel/pedals and not everyone is physically able to use a wheel and pedals either. Hopefully this can help those brave souls willing to play iRacing with an xbox one controller and enjoy themselves.
That’s neat you can use a controller but for iRacing to be a real sim, I think personally this option should only be allowed to be used offline, on a test, hosted session with others agreeing to it or AI session. It would be incredibly unfair to other drivers if they lose IR or SR due to someone using a controller.
I've talked with many people with disabilities who are able to race cleanly with settings like these. If a person proves themselves, as a wheel user, I could care less if they are on a controller. Appreciate the feedback
im gonna be ordering a wheel soon.. but for now I wanna just get in and play.. ill have VR headset with a controller..and eventually a wheel . Haters gonna hate as the kids say
It is a whole lot easier to play with a controller
I just got back into iRacing after a year away from it but I've used nothing but a controller and have gotten 10 oval wins as well as winning a league championship at one point using nothing but a controller I've surprisingly done well enough where people asked me if I races IRL I kept replying with not yet but I plan to lol, And these are the settings I use every race to
I play iRacing on a standard xb1 controller and I can consistently qualify in the top 3 without a lot of trouble.
Does your vibration work on the controller?
Lmao same here.. i try to do last to first on controller.. ive gotten 3rd
This guide really helped me decide to for sure get back into iRacing. Thank you!
Rampski you are the MAN! I am having anxiety about taking a week vacation and not being able to do any races in the evenings and when if the weather keeps us indoors. Thanks to you, it looks like my XB1X controller is going with and I'll still get to at least have some fun with iRacing.
hell yeah! Super glad you're liking it!
Thankyou for these tips and also for putting in the time. I would love a steering wheel but just don't have the space to keep one out in my flat, so using a controller is a close second. Thanks again
Wow the adjustment to the brakes is an absolute game changer in the Formula 4 car. I was struggling a lot with locking up and that has made a huge difference. Great work man.
Glad it helped!
Great video Rampski, thanks for letting me know about it. Had no idea about the force feedback workaround, definitely going to try this later. The brake one is interesting too, I'll give that a go because racing the Dallara F3 car, with brake force down at 0.3 it's still quite easy to lock up, this could really help. I agree that just because someone doesn't have a wheel doesn't mean they can't have fun with iRacing and give it a go, and become competitive! My shoulder injury meant I recently sold my wheel and focused on controller now, definitely viable and recently got pole position in quali with controller, and came second in the race (replay on my channel). It's still just as intense as with the wheel. Hopefully the iRacing community will welcome more controller users, at the end of the day, if you drive sensibly and respect others, it doesn't matter what input you use. Subscribed and liked :) 👍
Thanks so much man, let me know how that brake adjustment works out for ya. Can't thank you enough for the feedback and sharing your story.
Rampski Just run about 8 laps as a test with the brake and feedback adjustments. Feedback is definitely an improvement. The brake adjust is a BIG improvement. Best way I can describe it is it gives a bit more of a zone on the trigger to apply the brake without it locking up. I mean, it will still lock up, but the zone to apply the brake is bigger and more controllable. I was able to run some consistent laps in the 59s on Sebring Club in the Dallara F3, whereas i'm usually in the consistent 1m00s before the adjustment. Thanks again for the tips, great work! 👍
Thanks for this video mate, this game is so awesome and smooth controlling with a gamepad now. I think wheel is overstated, probably the only thing worth about it is ffb. Cheers, very big help
I found this video awesome. Helped me decide on whether to start iracing or not. Now that I have the time to play but not thousands of bucks to spend on toys anymore. I can go ahead and spend a little to get started in iracing with my Xbox controller just to get my feet wet and see what it's all about. If I can do decent with controller in rookie and like it then I can decide on a wheel setup. It's those fees and all the in game purchases that concern me too but what heck. On any Saturday I can have a tab at a local establishment for the price of a one year subscription so...yeah give it a shot.
Senna drifting his Kart in your outro is awesome
I drive trucks and don't have much room for a wheel atm so glad this is an option.
This one of the reasons why i made this video! Thanks for the feedback!
@@rampski not a problem man love the vids 😁
This is my problem as well. I'm driving a cabover in Europe and can't really mount a steering wheel anywhere 🙈 . Company doesn't want a table mounted to my dashboard. And I'm not enjoying Forza with Drivatars or people.
Amazing video. Just interested to try it out 👍
Thanks man. I had zero vibration in my controller before, and now it is working perfectly. I can stay relatively safe during a race on a controller, if not fast ;)
Glad you found this useful!
nice video, great niche tips!
Thank you!
Thank you it was helpful!
Awesome video thank you
Thanks! Very usefull indeed.
Nice tips. Ta.
Thank for your sharing sir.;)
Great video. This was helpful for me as I want to switch to I racing from console racing. But before I make the investment of gaming cpu and wheel I am going to borrow my brothers gaming laptop and play with a controller to see if I like the feel and if I enjoy it.
Thanks so much! Hopefully this makes it possible!
That's a bit of a stretch as someone who has both the things you mentioned
Thanks I'm going to give these a try
Please do and let me know what you think! Happy racing!
@@rampski Gave it a go and my cornering has improved a lot. I'm working on my shifting now. Admittedly, I have not used manual a whole lot.
@@Tick29 That's awesome! If you could throw a like on the video to support it, i would greatly appreciate it.. especially since me making this video is considered blasphemy in the iRacing community I dont expect the likes to be easy to come by
Done. Keep up the good work mate.
@@Tick29 Thanks so much my dude. Super happy it's helped.
I have a wheel on order but played on controller last night. I have to say I did way better than I thought I would. Came in middle of the pack on all 4 races I ran. Would much rather have my wheel but controller is doable for sure.
yeah man, its surprisingly fun with a controller (this is coming from a wheel user) lol
@@rampski True but still can't wait to have my wheel. Then my controller will be collecting dust again.
@@BoschGaming for sure! Hope you enjoy it! It's a great hobby. What wheel did you get?
@@rampski My community is sure pumped for it and had a blast last night. I only imagine it will get better with the wheel. Have had a couple subs order wheels as well so should be 4-5 of us all starting out.
Hell yeah it's well worth it. I barely play anything else anymore
Thank you. I'll try this. I want to try iracing but i'm just a casual and not really keen on spending a shit ton of money on a wheel that i may end up using only 1 week. Lets see how it goes.
Let me know how it works out! Thanks for watchin!
@@rampski Hey man i'm doing really well for a begginer on sim racing overall. Your tips sure helped a lot! I did some testing without them and it is indeed much much harder to drive the car.
I've basically only ran the mazda until now but i enjoy the car, so i'll problably stick to it for a while. Do you have any recommendations of cars that are on the easier side to drive on a controller, for when i want some change?
Anyway, thanks again for the tips, mate! I'm very grateful.
@@Gutooowwww I honestly didn't find the skip barber too hard to drive with a controller. Might want to try that one out. You might be able to pull off GT3, but thats a bit higher in the licenses.
finally a video with the proper holding of the left stick...some of the gamepad vids i see must be intentional to make gamepads look bad with using left stick as snap left and right....
Glad you liked it and found it useful!
holding the left stick upwards isn't this big thing you people think it is. It holds 0 benefits against moving the stick normally, why you get a hard on over it? lmao
ty for the brake tip
Thanks for watching!
I ran a controller for like 6 months.
Mainly racing the Mazda series and some oval races.
I found it very difficult to race GT3 due to the braking issue. So I gave up and haven’t really played Iracing since.
I’m going to have another go and adopt these settings and see how I go :)
I’ll be playing on a PS4 controller though. So wish me luck 🍀
Let me know how it goes bud!
@@rampski hey mate!
I gave it a go with your settings. It definitely helped. Much easier to control the car under brakes. I think I may need a little more tweaking. But it’s a big improvement.
I also just need more hours in this car with the game pad 😆
Did you have any trouble with standing starts? I am currently driving the mx5 and it seems like I cant get any power on starts no matter what I do
How can I drive a late model or modified on controller it seems like they either dont slide or just spin out
So, if I want to play iRacing with my PXN V3II/V3Pro... I have to press device is a joystick/gamepad?
I know this is video is a few years old but I cant seem to get my ps5 controller vibration to work in game using both ds4 and dsx? any ideas?
I have a full simrig, but sometimes I feel like driving a few laps but I don’t have enough the energy to actually operate wheel and pedals. So I also enjoy iracing with an Xbox controller. I actually started iracing on a controller and build my rig much later.
This is precisely why I made this video. Feel the exact same way. My knee is completely shot and racing for more than a half hour causes pain so using the controller once in a while is easier for me. It's only gotten worse as I've gotten older, which explains the lack of content in the last year or so
@@rampski i also have the knee problem. Sitting a bit higher or lowering the pedals helped a lot in my case. I am also using a load cell brake, but with only very little force setting (maybe 10kg) I also made sure I can almost fully extend the legs. Bend legs put higher pressure on the knees.
Nice video 👍
Is there a way to help adjust deadzone? I have some stick drift so some more deadzone would be good
do i need to put all the setting back to default in the notepad if i play with a Wheel ?
Could you potentially change the speed of steering
The setting should make the turn easier and not sliding to the side when press a hard brake if u know what I mean. My English is not good. thx for the tip.
Thanks for the video it was very helpful. Did you know a way to use the motion sensor (gyroscope) of the controller as the steering wheel in iracing?
I unfortunately don't know much about controllers with gyroscopes.. I wish I bought a steam controller years back tho it seems pretty awesome
@@rampski i can play with my ds4 with gyroscope on asserto Corsa, f1, projecto Cars but on iracing it doesnt work
Damn.. wonder if you posted on the iracing forums if you could find someone who got it working. I would probably try that if you haven't yet
@@rampski it is possible by using the controller as a mouse, but is not playable because the game is always losing the center of it.
planning on doing this i have a shit wheel (doesnt turn 360 degrees) and pedals but ill try out both maybe wheel will be a bit better idk want to buy a better wheel but also want to test out iracingp
i use these settings but its still so sensitive when i turn
even with the trick of keeping the thumb up on the joystick?
For some reason I don't have any vibration at all on my controller... Any setting I may have missed to enable vibration?
It's possible iRacing changed something from the time I made this video to now. I will try and look into it.
For some reason my XB1 controller won’t connect to iracing or even my computer at all? Any ideas? I’ve had to use my mouse which is a huge pain and I’m not sure how to get my controller connected. I’ve watched a few videos and nothing’s helped. Thanks, great video btw!
Hmm.. what version of windows are you on?
How about stock cars on ovals with a controller? Is it possible to manage those cars?
I believe it is. I'll have to see. I plan to do more car settings in another video
Very new to iRacing. I have a new wheel, but NO PEDALS. There seems to be a total shortage of hardware thanks to Covid-19. I am trying to use a game controller but not having too much success yet. I have tried Nascar Heat 3 &4 and Formula 1 2018 but find the controller way too twitchy. iRacing is better but not much. Your suggestions are giving hope that I can get started turning laps and learning a couple of tracks while I continue to look for pedals. I have a very nice Thrustmaster wheel but it is useless with the pedals.
Yeah I know.. everything is double the price too at the moment. I'm sure things will be back in stock over the next couple months. Let me know what you think of these settings!
@@rampski Prices are crazy. I refuse to pay double or triple retail or more. Much better than where I started. Still need to experiment some but just need to get laps. I am starting with a Legends car on the 1/4 mile Charlotte track. I was able to put in several consecutive laps without crashing and am dropping lap time with practice. Thanks for the help.
@@garyrobertson5621 Hell yeah! Really glad it helped man.
My xbox elite controller isnt vibrating. Anyone help?
I just got into iracing today and did what you told me but for some reason my break is being held down and I was wanting to know why?? Nothing is wrong with my controller it is brand new
I would go through the setup wizard one more time. Sometimes you need to click on invert
How do u get the game
My Iracing doesn't detect my xbox controller. You never mention anything about if it's usb or wireless. Does it matter?
Get ds4
Don’t know if anyone can answer or will see this, but when I use an XB1 controller I can only use the right stick to steer, the left does not pick up at all when I try to config
That's very odd.. it's an official Xbox controller?
@@rampski it is! It’s a regular xb1 controller that I purchased for my PC a while ago
Hmm.. seems like a very odd problem to me. Ill try and do some research and get back to you
@@rampski I wasn’t able to find anything, if it helps I can get into a discord call or something to explain the issue
Okay when I set my controller for the steering part I keep getting no left and it just pulls to the right I don't know what to do because it's a brand new controller can anyone help a fellow race can out
This sounds like maybe it's the controller. Any chance you can return it?
@@rampski yeah I returned it got a new one same problem thanks for responding tho I'm just gonna try to find a wheel for under a 100
The only thing I can think is maybe you altered the wrong line with the brake tweak if you did that. If you followed the whole guide
Can you use the Buttons to turn on the joy stick i like to use the the Buttons Instead of the joystick
Honestly never thought to do it. Maybe but I'm not certain
using buttons (digitally on/off) would be almost useless at any speed. you'd basically be turning the wheel instantly full lock either direction.
Hey Rampski. Great video. I have a cheap vibration only wheel with pedals and h shifter. Is it possible to do this for assetto corsa?
I can maybe whip something up!
@@rampski thank you. That would be just lovely. Right now, I can't feel when the car's losing traction.
@@rampski Any idea on how it could be done for a rumble/vibration only racing wheel?
@@rampski Hey Rampski, maybe you forgot but any idea about similar settings for assetto Corsa?
I can look into it. Haven't made a video in a while. Just haven't had a lot of time the last year or so
I have to try this out. Not enjoying Forza Motorsport 7 a lot. Can't use a steering wheel in my truck as I can't mount it. And not enough at home to play there.
Yeah, I think it's worth a shot!
this is nice, a steering wheel just isn't a comfortable and enjoyable gaming experience for me
One thing though, RUF is pronounced like Roof, not Rough. otherwise, will try this with my controller thanks to the fact I got a 3 month trial of iRacing.
Thank you!
How do you add deadzone to steering on the left stick? I have a slight jitter when the stick is centered every so often. I'm sure it'll be in that notepad file somewhere like you did for the breaks.
I'll look into it. What kind of controller are you using?
@@rampski I want to same. I'm using Xbox controller and i need deadzone setting for left stick.
@@erayakpnar8960 I'll check into it. Ive been playing gtr2 with a controller and I did notice mine has a sizable deadzone need now. Lucky for me gtr2 has a deadzone setting. Give me until the weekend and I can try and figure it out on iRacing because now I'm curious
@@rampski ok.
@@rampski did you find anything ?
People can be as angry as they want but it's literally an option within the game
Do you have to shift manually on controller?
You don't have to but I would recommend it
I kinda regret buying a Scuf without a rumble pack. :/
would this work with a PS4 controller?
I honestly don't know.. I'd say there's a good chance but I dont personally have one and haven't tried this with it so I dont want get your hopes up. If you give it a shot and it works let me know!
I can’t change gears into drive
How would it work if I want to use it as an h pattern shifter?
That's a good question honestly. I'm not sure how you would do it. Maybe when you go to the config stuff
I use a flight stick 😂
I wish I was joking 😅
Yep. Its all about getting your feet wet. There is no reason to not play a racing game/sim just because you dont have a wheel. Some of the fastest sim racers use a controller
Hell yeah, sim racing is about people having fun.
@@rampski have you not listened to race chat? LOL There's more salt in iRacing voice chat than there is in a salt mine. hah! love it still, though.
So these are the people who always take everyone out t1
Hey now I've been taken out turn 1 many times to know its not exclusive to people who use a controller. Its just a matter of being overly aggressive way too early in the race. My irating is sitting around 2000+ so I haven't experienced what rookie races are like in a long long time, perhaps its different. I am a wheel user, just made the guide because I was bored and thought it could help someone. I think its not fair to assume the maniacs are using a controller. Not everyone can afford this hobby and if using a controller allows them to, I say why not.
@@rampski it was a joke
Fair enough. I appreciate you watching and commenting. Surprisingly I've had some really nasty, elitist comments on this video.
@@rampski im sorry to hear that, I think its a really cool idea. Ill sub.
