One of my favourite tales is that in order to complete her training during WW2, she would have to drive a lorry into London. The Palace were terrified, what if she crashed? How would that effect national morale? So she was summoned to Buckingham Palace to be told she would not be allowed to complete her training. Her response? She drove to Buckingham Palace in a lorry, thus completing her training in the process!

They missed out my favourite. Some context at the time Saudi Arabia didn't allow women to drive. During a visit to her Scottish estate the queen asked the crown prince of Saudi Arabia if he wanted a drive around the estate. He was shocked and maybe a bit scared when the Queen drove them at breakneck speed around the estate its said that the Crown Prince begged via his interpreter for her to slow down

The last point is why the royal family is so respected here in the UK. They understand their role is one of service. Yes, they get lots of perks but their lives are strictly regulated. During WWII, the king & his family were offered a safe haven in Canada. The king refused to leave, believing his duty was to stay in the UK, to suffer alongside his people (granted they 'suffered' in luxury compared to the populace). The Queen Mother refused to leave the king & their daughters refused to go without their parents. The princesses were shipped off to Windsor Castle, until the future queen joined the ATS.
When she was only 14, Elizabeth made her first radio broadcast during the BBC programme Children's Hour. She wanted to talk to evacuees, especially those who had been sent abroad, to Canada, the US & elsewhere. She said "We are trying to do all we can to help our gallant sailors, soldiers & airmen, & we are trying, too, to bear our own share of the danger & sadness of war. We know, every one of us, that in the end all will be well; for God will care for us & give us victory & peace. And when peace comes, remember it will be for us, the children of today, to make the world of tomorrow a better & happier place."
Buckingham Palace was actually bombed during the Blitz, in 1940. Afterwards the Queen Mother said she could "look the East End in the face". The East End was a part of London that was very heavily populated, mainly with working class & poorer people, with the docks as the main industry in the area, although there were also many factories. Obviously this was a perfect target for the Luftwaffe, hitting people (the families of soldiers, so as to dishearten them) & damage Britain's supply chain & war industry. Throughout the Blitz, the king & Queen Mother visited places that had been bombed, such as housing estates, the long terraces of houses, usually multi-occupied, factories, hospitals & the troops. They understood their role was to provide stability & boost morale.
On VE day, the present-day queen & her sister, Princess Margaret, disguised themselves & joined the crowds celebrating on the street. She had proven herself during WWII, offering her service to the country. She could have had an easy war. Granted she was protected from the worst of it but she got as involved in the war effort as she could.
Interesting note, rationing was a fact of British life until it finally ended in 1954. Clothing & material was part of the ration until May 1949. It was therefore in force when the queen married Prince Philip. People sent her their clothing coupons to help with her wedding dress. She sent them back with a letter of thanks, explaining she could not accept them because sharing coupons was illegal. (It was widespread though: my parents, especially my Dad who is 2 years older than Mum, used to do odd jobs in exchange for sweets (candy) coupons.) The government granted her 200 extra coupons as they felt she deserved a dress befitting royalty. I also suspect hey realised it would be good for the country, especially in regards its standing internationally. The UK was completely broke after the war, but didn't want anyone to know that. We only finished paying off the debt to the US on 31st December 2006. Americans talk about how they came over & saved us. The American government were not acting altruistically. Every single piece of weaponry was sold to the UK, for example. In 1945 the UK had a debt of approximately £21 billion. We willingly shared our technology with the US during the war, as we were far more advanced than the US at the time, plus we shared the knowledge & expertise we captured from the Germans. The US took it but refused to share what they had captured. For example, British scientists at the University of Birmingham discovered nuclear fission in uranium in March 1940. We started the Atomic bomb project, called Tube Alloys. It was shared with the US by Mark Oliphant, an Australian working in the UK. In August 1943, Churchill & Roosevelt signed the Quebec Agreement to coordinate a combined scientific effort. The Hyde Park Agreement of September 1944 was a promise to continue the collaboration after the war. The Tizard Mission throughout WWII made the US realise that the UK was more advanced. Basically the US provided the money & the UK the science& technology. When Roosevelt died, Trumen claimed that all paperwork promising collaboration was lost & the UK was refused access to its own research data. This is why most UK people (those who know their history) are wary of the US.

He was sat waiting for her, when she arrived the normal things happened. Then after the Queen sat down at the table and took 5 breadsticks out of the bowl in the middle of the table and put them to one side. Not to offend the Queen the guest did exactly the same, and took 5 breadsticks, too. The tea was poured and at that moment 5 Corgies came in the room. She gave a breadstick to each one and they left. I've known for decades that Queen Elizabeth is a badass. During her service in WWII, she took a course on maintaining jeep engines. The 'final exam' was to completely disassemble a jeep engine, put it back together, and have it run. While this was in progress, her father George VI and Queen (later Queen Mother) Elizabeth toured the school, including the yard where the exam was taking place. Of course, neither then-Princess Elizabeth nor her parents could acknowledge each other, and the king and queen went on their way. Well, Princess Elizabeth finished reassembling her jeep engine, but it wouldn't start. Turns out her father had walked off with the distributor cap! (Who says the royals don't have a sense of humor??)

Her father set her a very good example. As Duke of York he never expected to become King, and he had to pick up the pieces after the abdication of his elder brother and restore faith in the monarchy, leading the country through WW2. Before that he served as a gunnery officer at the Battle of Jutland, learnt to fly with the RAF, and played tennis at Wimbledon. His early death not only brought Elizabeth to the throne long before she expected, it scuppered Prince Philip's naval career too.

One thing that wasn't mentioned that should have been, The Queen is above the law, yes its true, she is literally the only person in the Uk that is above the law, but she is much more than that, this may come as a surprise to many but like people think, she isn't paid with Tax Payers money, let me explain.
In 1760 George III allowed the government to manage Crown estate in return for a yearly allowance, people say he was mad, but he wasn't that mad as he retained ownership of Crown estate, each time a new Monarch is crowned the government must see the monarch so that the crown estate agreement can carry on, so for the space of a couple of weeks all crown estate is returned back to the Monarch.
Currently the Queen receives 15% of crown estate, the other 85% is put into the treasury, like everyone elses tax, there has been a lot mentioned about the money spent on Royal palaces, the tax payer doesnt pay for repairs or the up keep, the money for that comes from the Sovereign Grant, which is money from Crown Estate.
Not many people know this, since 1997 the Queen has been paying tax, as the Queen is head of the family the rest of the Royals also pay tax, those Royals who dont carry out any official duties all work, this is something that you can never tell people who dont want to believe it, but its true...

Something to add about the Queen's driving - some years ago, back in the early 00's the Saudi King was visiting the Queen at Balmoral and she offered to take the Saudi ruler on a tour of the estate. He agreed and got into the front passenger seat of the Land Rover parked up outside, and was shocked when Her Majesty got into the driving seat. She then used all of her military driving skills to scare the bejeezus out of him and even made sure to go past some press photographers so that they could get a shot of the Saudi King being driven by a woman during the time when women in Saudi Arabia were banned from driving. Now that's how you make a stand against sexism!

Little girl loses the class monkey on a trip to London. Class wrote a letter asking if they had found the toy.

Although she appears to live a lavish lifestyle, she’s just living in the country’s palaces and castles in trust. She’s actually very stoic and conscience with spending. Compared to the lavish lifestyles of the Royals in the Middle East, she is incredibly humble and connected to her countries which is why she’s so loved.

    • @frglee

For those that don't know what a 'conker' is, they are the 3cm sized, dark brown seeds of the Horse Chestnut tree, which children put a piece of string through and play a game where they swing it to try to smash an opponent's conker by hitting it hard enough. They are sometimes soaked in vinegar to make them extra hard. The word may come from 'conquerer'.

Minor point, as she learnt to drive in the army as a Princess rather than Queen, she would have been issued with a military " Certificate of Competency " for her driving., which was the equivalent of passing a civilian Driving test. On the first, Her Majesty asked me what I did for fun and I replied that I went trainspotting. On hearing that, she replied that she would be on the Royal Train a few weeks later passing through my home town and suggested taking a picture.
About three years later, I was at an event for a charity and during the walking down the line, the Queen recognised me and asked if I had managed to get the picture. I told her that I had and she replied that she thought I might have as she had looked out of the window and had noticed a single person (me) standing in the pouring rain on the open platform with a camera.
