      Nice catchy phrase but the person who came up with this assumes that the person in power will abuse it.
      We need to rethink whether this phrase is indeed true

      Power reveals, not corrupts. Power reveals the true philosophy and inclinations of a person's values, beliefs and heart. This is because now, you don't have to convince your enemies and thereby might learn something about yourself, you can arrest or kill all of them.

    We (Singapore) are in a steady decline. It can sustain for a while, but without transparency, honest engagement with the citizenry, and bringing forth a sense of "why Singapore?", we will not be here past 2065.

      An honest assessment of our political and educational systems. We need to have a pluralistic political landscape that truly respects the one-man-one-vote system and not the gerrymandered GRC system. A proportional representation model is valuable and gives a voice to everyone. There will be no walkovers - every seat that has only one candidate must garner a minimum of 30% valid votes or the seat is empty; remove the PSLE system and blend the Primary 1-Secondary 4/5 years as one through train. The removal of 2nd language from a graded to a pass/no-pass model with the emphasis on STEM across the board. We need to have the educational system to break away from the 20th century model of catering for the industrial automaton model to a thinking and questioning model critical for the country's survival in the 21st. So, pluralistic political system plus a rigorous educational system.

      Absolutely agree! We need a system that is fair and purposeful, not to eliminate many and elevate the few elites!
      Why penalise most people under the guise of meritocracy and making life very tough and demoralising for the majority of the Singaporeans?

    • @jeangian1781
      @jeangian1781 Před 7 lety +3

      Having a two-language system does not enhance the bilingual education. Not everybody has the language ability or talent to manage two languages with equal proficiency.
      To manage just one language requires tremendous effort and time, what's more when the demand for two languages is dealt with in the same amount of time spent on learning just one language.
      This is absolutely difficult on the learners and demanding on their time, especially when they need to handle other learning subjects such as Mathematics and Science.

    • @HarishPillay
      @HarishPillay Před 7 lety +5

      I think learning as many languages is a big plus, but one has to atleast master one. Two will be a huge bonus. With one language mastered - and I will say that it is English - the rest of STEM will follow through very well. While I would love to have a Singaporean win the Nobel prize for literature, but given how we are force feeding the formative years with unneeded emphasis on two languages (English and 2nd language), we are sacrificing students who could otherwise be excellent STEM students down a path that necessitates high proficiency in 2nd language. It was LKY's misguided stance that brought us down that path. I will still insist that we have multilingual - not bilingual per se - capability. It helps with grasping the diversity of the world, but we have to be clever if we are to be relevant to ourselves and the world at large.
      Let's look at the 2nd language baggage the system carries. If you choose to do what they call Syllabus B in secondary school, you have a *much* better deal where you can focus on your interests and give a boost to STEM. We have to push that into the primary school system as well. A child who can handle languages, whether an early or a late bloomer, will find it in him/her to want to explore and excel. Not everyone is like that. As you note, we are penalizing the majority for the minority to succeed. There is no equity in that case.
      I have yet to hear any of the alleged "4th" generation PAP "leaders" articulate *anything* in that regard. They are all from the same mould and I will say that there is a good amount of group think as well that they cannot see the obviously broken system. These chaps also cannot see that apart from the continued-to-be-broken educational system, we have a political model that has been gerrymandered and stacked so much that it makes it unnecessarily difficult for alternative voices to rise up.
      It is interesting in the context of the interview of PJ above, that there is this dissension in the famiLEE. Will the PM sue his siblings for libel or defamation the way he is very quick to so with anyone else since they say that he is abusing power? Would his wife do that same? The PM who is going to be presenting his "case" in parliament on July 3 will be able to do so with parliamentary privilege and parts of it will be against two private citizens who happen to his siblings who won't be able to respond in parliament. If *that* isn't a form of abuse of power, I am not sure what it would be then.
      I do hope that something good comes out of this fiasco and I am an optimist.

There are many good definitely but often then not one's point of view is not omnipotent and doesn't fits all shoe and when one's fail to realize the underlying issue then there is no way to have a constructive plan to rectify it. I'm not saying either good or bad but just an observation of things. Will this video clip come under Shanmugam 's Fake News Act? After Lky, the real test of that mortal man's legacy begins. It's not about his first son or first daughter in law or the elites in the government. It's whether the people can detect any weak leader and boot him out of office or just sit idle and watch the world go by. We appreciate the good things here but the costs of living is certainly biting into the common people's lives. Why the need raise car park fees, water fees, transport costs yet let property prices soar when our foreign reserves sit idle? is it so that the elites will continue to be happy and to afford their rising asset prices?

      Your words has so much truths in it. Although many singaporeans detect the government's weakness and selfishness we can't do anything much. The system they have been using for the General election is top secret and we don't know how do they even count their votes to allow them to be the victor.
      But putting that aside, you mentioned about the cost of necessities and the hike in these prices. I totally agree with this point 100%. With CPF, high prices in all aspect of necessities it makes me wonder how can the ministry complain about their earnings and say that they ought to earn more. Looking at the wider picture, even foreigners coming to singapore and are living life in singapore compared to their own citizen.
      Such shame for a singaporean to see this happening. It also questions the trust we have for our government. They talked about having better lives in singapore and it will all be good for us. Time and time again it has been touched upon but yet there has been no change. The rich get richer the poor gets poorer. Currently there are too many old folks selling tissues and yet they still think the economy is doing well?
      How can he say that when eceonomy should benefit the people and not himself (minister). Im not sure about you but I can see singapore allowing things like this to happen (such as allowing more foreigners to soar and be better than us) (having to be in top 1 in the economy chart for status purposes) (having old people to work just to take their CPF)

      Julie O'Connor you must be joking! He will bring Singapore down . He puts forth eloquent arguments which at the same time have a lot of holes in it.. I would request all Singaporeans to pay careful attention and analyse each word he is saying. He is ludicrous. He gives the impression that LHL taking over from LKY is a succession. When Singaporeans know LHL is the 3rd PM.
      He says the Lee dispute will bring Singapore down. His comments are dangerous for Singaporeans. Singaporeans are a practical lot. we all understand the Lee family dispute is a private dispute, but like typical Singaporeans that does not stop us from giving our views. He is also insulting our parliament process and socio-democratic process. Compare our parliament to the world's democratic countries and you will know where we stand.
      He says LKY concentrated power in his own hands and was a one man rule in Singapore. This is a clear insult to our other founding fathers Goh Keng Seee, S. Rajaratnam, Toh Chin Chye, Othman Wok, etc.
      He is saying the Leadership position held in the political, judiciary and Civil Service in Singapore was through a pre existing relationship with the Lee family. He is saying that the Lee family is not a family but a network of family who occupied critical positions of power. What he is saying is not only stupid but an insult to other chinese, malays, indians, Eurasions etc. He talks about infighting,over fight and "long term chaos" and crackdown by establishment. He does not seem concerned about it. He seems to be sure there will be long term chaos- how ? through violence?.
      Changes are taking place . Our future will be different and it will happen painlessly and bloodlessly, because we have some of the strongest institutions in the world.
      To borrow a phrase, we are not perfect but we should not be carried away by clever sophistry.

      @joconnor70 Před 7 lety +6

      No I was not joking at all. You really think one man can bring down the juggernaut of the PAP party? You really think that LHL wasn't part of the succession planning, where a mentor was chosen between the change-over of father and son? You are naive if you believe this is a family dispute, it is questioning the role of the PM, which is a public office role. I have regretfully experienced the "system" of Governance in Singapore and if you become caught up in the web of deceit and lies, it's not pleasant. So I'm afraid I will beg to differ with you and agree with Thum Ping Tjin and Lee Hsien Yang, given my own personal experience.

    You have good points but maybe you seem to think that western liberal democracy is the be-all for any political system throughout the world. We have witnessed the chaos in Trump's rise to power and the unnecessary Brexit fiasco. Any political model must be pragmatic enough to serve the populace. It is the mean to an end. This end is the freedom, economic prosperity and peace of a society thriving in a constructive discourse. It is not utopian but we have to strive toward that direction.

Where absolute Power is concentrated in a group of elites most capable to rule.For Plato, it was the Philosophers. For Singapore its basically the most qualified. Even in LKY's time he did not actually run the county, Lim Kim San, Goh Keng Swee etc all ran their respective parts of the country.

    Siblings rivalry especially jealousy over what continues to accrue more and more to the first born, the elder son and his family.
    This is the worst kind of unhappiness that can happen to a family when an old man dies making the prophecy comes true that wealth [happiness is a big part of wealth, not just material wealth] does not last over 3 generations.
    The worst damage to wealth is unhappiness in rivalry due to jealousy of the first-born family, the elder son's family getting all the attention, recognition and power, more so fuelled and instigated by the wife of the younger son/s.
    This happens in many families and I have witnessed many first hand, and where families harmony and respect for the family of the elder son, the first born, was help in contempt and ridicule.
    This is nothing new to the Lees. It happens to many families.
    I hope psychologists will study why this happens in the lives of humans, and what should be done to prevent this from happening as it would bring down the happiness [a part of wealth] into unhappiness when an old man passes on, and the rivalry appears immediately in some cases, some even before the funeral of the old man is over.

    Singapore's rule of law doesn't put LEE's Will and interest above the rest, and that is something Singaporeans should be proud. What is more laughable is to see people like TPT clamoring over LHY and trying to make him look like some Avenger superhero standing on moral high ground. Singapore land acquisition, conservation, and preservation act is there to protect Singapore's interest, not the Lees. So stop spinning this into a case about LHL abusing his power. In actual fact, if LHL doesn't allow the government to take control of this issue, he will be abusing its power to deny Singapore a chance to preserve an important part of Singapore's history. As a self proclaimed "historian", I am surprised TPT doesn't think so

    Personally I'm neither pro-PAP Nor am I pro-Opposition so his view being a veiled criticism of the democratic system in Singapore offers an alternative viewpoint. I don't condone Nor do I agree fully but some of his statements about concentration of power does have some validity to it. To put down another person's view just because he or she doesn't agree with what you deem as 'right' or the 'truth' isn't the way forward. You can tell that he is trying to choose his words wisely, not much can be said about some others who lambast and accuse overtly.
    Every country has a struggle for power, because without power you can effect nothing and change nothing, your words have no weight and no meaning. The Lee family feud is just but one of the indicators of such a struggle.

Every family aspire to be have a good family and Mr LKY recognises that too. But to make us believe and see his family as a model family will be too much. His own cabinet has brilliant people who don't have perfect marriages. LKY has said, we make mistakes and will abundant policies that are wrong. LHY's son is a gay...and LKY accepted gay people. He doesnt even want a statue of himself. You said power is not sustainable due to one man. BUT LKY has sustained and make Spore progress till his death so your statement is wrong. If it is eroding after LKY, it is not because of LKY. LKY has said before, how Spore survive depends on the next generation not on the Lee family. Finding another LKY will be next to impossible because we are living in different times. We might find one if there is another crisis equivalent to war. We are all human. I don't expect LHL or LHY to groom their sons for political office unless their own children aspire and is good enough to be one. This will be nepotism and against his principle of choosing the best to rule the people. LKY did his best. The rest is up to us. I think LKY knew even his own sons will not continue his "reign" like the Monarchy or other communist countries. PAP was an opposition party once. Like all parties they fight to win. Hence it won't go through.

Citizens suffers when polticians of different arties fight each other to grab powers. Corruption runs rampant. Look at how fast China is catching up with majority party rule. Singapore will last beyond 2100 with majority party rule if the youths are pragmatic , wise political engagers who can choose upright leaders. Gov has an important role to build wise citizens not just knowledge citizens, thus the importance of identifying fake new, twisted opinions. I felt we should focus on passing Mr Lee Kuan Yew pragmatic, fast, discipline, non corrupt ideology that the current system is meant for. We tend to hype the "Lee" powers ho;d over the country.
