Reflections on Singapore's General Election 2015
zhlédnutí 65KPřed 8 lety
The outcome of the general elections in Singapore was a shock to most observers, who had predicted a far tighter outcome. The unprecedented six seats (out of 87, plus a seventh seat won in a by-election in 2013) won by the Worker's Party in 2011 had led many to herald a "new normal" in Singapore, one which would see greater opposition participation in Parliament to act as a check and balance on...

Singapore's rule of law doesn't put LEE's Will and interest above the rest, and that is something Singaporeans should be proud. What is more laughable is to see people like TPT clamoring over LHY and trying to make him look like some Avenger superhero standing on moral high ground. Singapore land acquisition, conservation, and preservation act is there to protect Singapore's interest, not the Lees. So stop spinning this into a case about LHL abusing his power. In actual fact, if LHL doesn't allow the government to take control of this issue, he will be abusing its power to deny Singapore a chance to preserve an important part of Singapore's history. As a self proclaimed "historian", I am surprised TPT doesn't think so

The fact is, PAP not only control the Political power of Singapore but also the economy power with it GLCs out stretch. That is to say if one day the Government were to be switched over to the opposition, they would probably be very busy on cleaning up the mess left by PAP which likely to take at least 2 terms of the election to do so. And PAP would have the ammunition from their control over the economy to make life very miserable for the new Government. Thus, this is to say that the new Government first job to do in their first term is to eradicate PAP control over the economy and investigate them one by one. And now you understand why the PAP is so afraid of losing. And I am not surprise all this is going to lead to one "you know who" family.

Liberal democracy is a western imposition on the their colonies after looting it. Democracy should come after prosperity otherwise it will lead to chaos look at those countries in asia which adopted democracy shortly afrer independence they have not got a civilised life they have lot of political rights but no economic rights nothing is there for survival. In my opinion Singapore has to be opened up to full fledged democracy now. Look at South Korea they achieved economic prosperity under a dictator and now it is a democracy which works very well.

The post-Lee Hsien Loong landscape will put Singapore at a crossroads, because from the looks of it there currently seems to be no one who can command or rather, amass the amount of power and authority of younger Lee. That’s the impression I get. Hopefully this means that there will be a growing number of opposition voices both from within the current establishment as well as new ones from outside it. Even if the PAP isn’t dethroned immediately by an opposition (I use “an” rather than “the” because I feel there has to be more alternatives than the main opposition party, the Worker’s Party), ideally the post-Lee era will usher in a period of momentum where the PAP’s monopoly is increasingly challenged and it’s increasingly pushed into cooperation and making concessions, to level the playing field where the PAP would likely remain a major party, but one that must nonetheless fight for its influence rather than coast along and assume victory by default.

Don't agree with you about making Sporean see the Lee family as a model family cos I never see it and many of my friends never see it. Every family aspire to be have a good family and Mr LKY recognises that too. But to make us believe and see his family as a model family will be too much. His own cabinet has brilliant people who don't have perfect marriages. LKY has said, we make mistakes and will abundant policies that are wrong. LHY's son is a gay...and LKY accepted gay people. He doesnt even want a statue of himself. You said power is not sustainable due to one man. BUT LKY has sustained and make Spore progress till his death so your statement is wrong. If it is eroding after LKY, it is not because of LKY. LKY has said before, how Spore survive depends on the next generation not on the Lee family. Finding another LKY will be next to impossible because we are living in different times. We might find one if there is another crisis equivalent to war. We are all human. I don't expect LHL or LHY to groom their sons for political office unless their own children aspire and is good enough to be one. This will be nepotism and against his principle of choosing the best to rule the people. LKY did his best. The rest is up to us. I think LKY knew even his own sons will not continue his "reign" like the Monarchy or other communist countries. PAP was an opposition party once. Like all parties they fight to win. They are not going to make it easy for you. If another opposing party comes and do better than the PAP, I can accept it.

siajiale i disagree. united states have an examplary model of democracy, however without the ideal average intelligence within their population to sustain the model, which means the voters have to be smarter and discerning. for example, republicans and conservatives are less into social welfare and more into meritocracy which is good but many of them are religious nutjobs. while the democrats and liberals are open minded but far too progressive for their own good like the recent acasio-cortez. and the ones who emphasized the flawed aspects of the respecting parties are the less intelligent, easily swayed and bandwagoning voters.

siajiale i get where you are coming from, and i do see the fruits of it in singapore, to a certain extent china and russia. but we cant sustain the idea of leaders assuming what everyone wants, especially when our later generation is more educated and smarter albeit pampared and soft. which is why i said, the united states model only fulfil its fullest potential when the general population is smarter, wiser and more intelligent in choosing the right president, congress and senate. i understand why you chose the class analogy, but the follow up would be, the most students do choose their diploma, nitec course, alevel streams and degrees as they wise up to choose the future they along with the burden it draws instead of an assumed leader dictating their future.

Thus Singapore still has the right to vote. Whoever comes into power should be given power absolutely, because the people chose them. USA has too many checks in place. Whatever the president passes may not go through. Its difficult to make changes. The failure of such a model of democracy when it is reliant on masses, but the people who make up the house / senate would most likely be unwilling to make drastic and unpopular measures. Hence it won't go through. Only the brave and visionary will be able to do this. But can the majority of the people in house and senate be visionary? No, naturally its not possible because only 0.01% of the people have it. They are fighting over petty stuff and siding with one party, while disagreeing with whatever the other party says. That's a shame.
