Reflections on Singapore's General Election 2015

  • The outcome of the general elections in Singapore was a shock to most observers, who had predicted a far tighter outcome. The unprecedented six seats (out of 87, plus a seventh seat won in a by-election in 2013) won by the Worker's Party in 2011 had led many to herald a "new normal" in Singapore, one which would see greater opposition participation in Parliament to act as a check and balance on the ruling People's Action Party (PAP). During the 2015 election period, the opposition was greeted by rapturous crowds and the ruling party often seemed on the verge of panic. Yet the PAP won decisively, holding on to all their seats, gaining back a seat from the Worker's Party, and increasing their overall vote share by nearly 10%. P.J. Thum, Research Associate at the Center for Global History and Coordinator of Project Southeast Asia at the University of Oxford, who covered the election on behalf of The Online Citizen, will discuss the reasons for this outcome by putting it in the overall context of Singapore history.

    In the political debate for GE2020, Dr Balakrishnan, Minister for Foreign Affairs, actually used that term "PAP Lite" or "PAP light" when talking with WP candidate Jamus Lim. This shows that that's actually what PAP think WP is too.

    Don't be surprised if PAP's manifestos do not have any promise. In Malaysia, Tun Mahathir said, manifesto is not a holy book.

    • @jamilatanbinselamathardajo2626
      @jamilatanbinselamathardajo2626 Před 4 lety +1

      Tun while in PH did not author the manifesto. He merely accepted it but did not embraced it. Thus to him it is not a "holy book". But to the many voters...it is a list of promises by PH to the people when replace BN later. And this is what happened! They won. The people wanted PH to honour their promises which they did not ..... the people felt cheated.

    Refreshing discussion. I do however disagree that TOC is a credible news source.
    When it comes to political opinion, there are no credible sources. Exercise sound judgment.

    Today is 12 June 2017 and it's almost half way through b4 the next GE.
    Very interesting to hear the narrative of Dr Thum. He has my support.
    Now, I think the PAP has done their ground work in house visits, some of them doing ok and some doing scantily obviously if you have seen them in your Constituency.
    So what happen to the opposition, have they done their part in house visits? I think only WP have done a good job so far but only in Aljunied grc, SDP very little here and there, SPP lesser than SDP, and the rest I think is less than 100 blocks of flat.
    So we can see in summary the opposition itself has not put up a solid ground work in the Heartland.
    And my question is, what are the chances now for the opposition to win the next GE.
    I'm afraid only WP shall return Aljunied grc in the next GE as I see it.

      house visits are useless. They are just there to say vote for me. opposition in Singapore need to remember their aims for wanting to be MP. Many like Kenneth Jeyaretnam and Goh meng seng are just going for election to become MP,.Goh meng seng, he quit the workers party and smear them just because in 2006 Sylvia Lim(a lawyer) was chosen to be NCMP and not him. Kenneth Jeyaretnam on the other hand is out for revenges for his father. His father is drag down by PAP not workers party and yet just because he felt workers party did not help him, he seek to destroy WP instead of PAP. And the rest? All wanting to be the leader, and especially with the Joker Chee asking Worker party to run Town council , while he go parliament become MP. How to vote the other Opposition other then WP?

    wait! (21:18) there had been cases where people's CPF had been taken away because they don't toll the line! This is a serious accusation, any supporting evidence?
    (I keep myself unbiased and neutral when listening to this. I should say some are facts but not all are entirely true. the above is a good example)

    Dr. Thum, not totally convinced by your comments on Lui Teck Yew. Earlier you said he was sacked for screwing up big time with vindication. Towards the end you can't confirm the truth. Hope you are not putting up a show as if you know the truth but in actual fact you don't have a clue.
