Those visible springbar gaps with the RubberB strap are a crime on a watch of this caliber... I could not live with that :O That strap is 1 or 2mm too narrow
Yes, I had another commenter notice this - Rubber B makes the sizing for the SwimSkin in 2mm spans. My GS uses the 21-22mm size, and even though the spacing on it is 22 the strap is very tight. So since this watch is 21 I went with the 19-20mm size strap because I thought the larger one would be overly tight. It is noticeable for sure but, it doesn't bother me too much.
Agreed. Should go with the 22mm and slice a bit off of each edge. Not brain surgery.

Really appreciate the comment, I enjoyed making it. And I agree, I always try to share that story or connection if I'm going to make a review. Maybe some people just prefer the facts and details of the watch but I think that misses the point of owning them!
JLC is an incredible Manufacturer. In fact, out of all my collection (which includes pieces from Patek, Rolex, AP, Cartier, Omega, etc) my JLC Geophysic 1958 gets the most wrist time. It’s classy, elegant, yet versatile and robust. Best of all, you don’t see a JLC on everyones wrist like you do a Rolex.
I agree, I think for what you're actually getting with a JLC they may be one of the most understated watches. Some of the highest quality standards in the industry - and beautiful.

@@JamesCarian I like the moon phase on this watch, I have a feeling that the decoration of the moon phase is just so much more superb to what any other company is doing. I've never even been a fan of moon phases, because 1 - who cares where the moon is, and I'd normally prefer keeping a watch cleaner of complications I wouldn't use. but this thing is really special. definitely going into my watch wishlist, and that list is becoming quite exclusive since my taste in watches is starting to become quite expensive, and only the best make it in
@@yaakovhassoun8965 yeah I mean I didn't even really look around much or compare but the only other reasonably priced watch with a moon phase I can think of is the GO panomatic lunar, and I don't like that nearly as much as the JLC.
@@JamesCarian yeah that one's beautiful also, very well balanced. but I stopped enjoying small seconds hands. I like seeing a little more movement. At first I thought it was cool, but I kinda moved away from that style (I'm wearing a nomos 180 with a small seconds hand as I type). I love the detail on the jlc, especially the stars.

I bought mine in 2018 and absolutely loved it. This new version is a very nice evolution of the previous design. One particular thing I'm not a fan of the newer one is the applied JL logo on the dial. The previous version had a hand painted logo which is more inline with the dressiness of this watch.
Interesting call out on that detail! Yeah I can definitely see how some of those small things can influence how people feel about the watch. Sometimes it's still okay enough to want the piece, but other times it can certainly be a deal breaker. Love this version of it. Thanks for the comment!

Great tip about the indices being a little longer on the new one. I think it’s worth getting the new one for the power reserve to not have to reset the moon phase if it’s in the case over the weekend.

That's one fierce looking watch. To be honest, I'd like it more around 36mm or so, but that's just me. I'm a sucker for dainty dress pieces.
In any case, it looks incredible and having a great JLC (which I don't) with all the heritage and expertise and dedication put into it... must be rewarding in and of itself.
The black dial is the STAR of the show. Even the GS used for zaratsu comparison pales in comparison

Great advice, just buy what you like, full stop. I'm thinking of getting this in the silver version as my retirement watch in a couple years. This or maybe even a Cellini Moonphase. In comparable metals (rose gold), they're about the same price.
Silver dial is also gorgeous, that would've been my 2nd choice of the 3 stainless models. But yes, the Cellini and the RG model are also very lovely. Kind of wish the Cellini would have Rolex's standard fluted bezel instead of the coined style one that it has. But hey, only they get to decide on those designs I suppose. Thanks for sharing!

Very nice review. I got mine last week. Unfortunately, I thought about which dial I would like for too long, the prices have been increased 3 times during this time. Now I have chosen the blue dial because depending on the light it seems more versatile, sometimes just plain black.
Hmm to me it seems like the pricing has stayed consistent on this...blue dial is an excellent choice though. Personally I don't think there's a wrong choice in color on this reference, all 3 are beautiful and distinct in their own ways.
@@JamesCarian Perhaps the pricing in the US is different than in Europe. In January 2022 the price increased from €9,700 to €10,600. In May 2022 from €10,600 to €11,200, and in September from €11,200 to €12,400. Alltogether 2.700,- € in 9 months.
@@georgeii2629 wow yes that is a big bump. Pre-owned for the newest reference in the US has stayed about $1-2k under retail. Clearly more interest in Europe, it seems. Glad you were able to get the one you wanted though!

Thanks Jim! I just continue to be impressed by the brand. From everything I've seen of the manufacture, you're getting a Patek for a third of the price here. And candidly I think I like JLC's designs better (in many cases). I find myself giving this one a majority of the wrist time during the day! And the all black esthetic makes it versatile, I'm currently wearing it on a brown strap and liking that more than the black on black.

Thank you! And no, the first time I tried on this model was actually last year at a boutique (only the 39's) so I knew exactly what I wanted. I was looking at the RG version for a bit but ultimately I needed a black on black piece and this was perfect.

when setting the time/date/moon phase, isn't there like a red zone where the hands shouldn't be? so you have to move the hands out of the red zone, then set the date and moon phase, then the time. I'm curious about your thoughts.
Yes, generally the recommendation will be setting the date/moon phase outside of 9pm-3am as to not get too close to the date changeover. So yes, you'd move the time to something more neutral in the day.

I was initially considering this model until jlc released the new master calendar with a wondering date. Bought it and I swapped the brown leather staps to a matte blue gator straps from jlc. Amazing timepiece.

You can totally tell the difference between the two watch straps without them being side to side. You're giving the Rubber B way too much credit haha.
I'm alright with that though, Rubber B deserves the credit. I don't know that anyone would notice it on your wrist and accuse you of wearing a faux leather strap. Truly a matter of personal preference I think.
its a very nice watch! and i love to see it on your wrist. I tried this piece before and saw it in person but it did not move me the way you did. however, one thing about JLC though is that they have gone up A LOT in price. the value is not there anymore. i will take GS over JLC these days.
Thanks for the comment! Most brands have increased prices somewhat...in my opinion even though GS may be the best value in all watchmaking currently, JLC is still an amazing value. If this was a Patek or Lange it would cost $25k. And yet JLC still does hand finishing, all in house movements with amazing accuracy, and complications for significantly less. You still get your money's worth with JLC.

That is a beautiful watch. I love the classic and elegant style. Dress watches are an underrated segment of the market that many people ignore. It's hard to find a dress watch with a clean and simple dial. Would you say that it is the kind of watch that you can wear daily? I want one, but I am worried it may be too delicate. I take care of my watches, but would be devastated to get even a scratch on such a beautiful and pricey watch. I only have experience with Seiko watches. How does the JLC compare in terms of build quality?
Thanks for the comment! Yes, having a few different pieces in the collection this one quickly became a favorite daily wearer for me. Love the subtle elegance of it. I really don't think it's delicate. I put a Rubber B strap on there so I wouldn't need to worry about water or anything and it's very versatile. No more susceptible to scratching than any stainless steel watch. It is incredibly accurate. I don't have experience with Seiko watches personally, I've had two Rolex, two Omega, one Grand Seiko, and this. For me this has probably been the most correct size for my wrist, even though at times I do like the larger wrist presence of the Rolex. I am actually in the process of trading this one in for a special limited edition of this same watch, just because of how much I liked it. So yes if you're looking for a great daily that's understated, comfortable, and a beauty to look at, you can't go wrong with this. And all 3 color options on it are spectacular.
I'd say just be sure to look at the newest version of the watch so you get the extended power reserve, the older model has shorter separated indices at 12 and only a 38 hour reserve vs 70.

Ceramic bearings in the rotor - the sound is a bit more noticeable and I'd say it rotates more freely, which is actually good because it seems to need less motion to stay wound.
3:24 it odd, minutes hand went back when you pull crown back..
Sometimes if you turn the crown inadvertently as you're pulling it out reinserting it it will maneuver the time. Not unusual for any watch I've seen.
so that strap is 100% rubber? like if you wear it on another WR watches, you can swim in it?
Correct! The series from Rubber B is actually called "Swim Skin" for that reason. I love their products!

That's a great question, I haven't crossed that bridge with any of my watches yet. I'll probably check out some forums or the JLC site when I get close to owning it that long and see what it looks like. But yeah I think in general most watches are $750-1500 on the high side so I'd imagine it's somewhere in there.
Get to know a good independent. Sending to JLC will be expensive and they will refinish etc which you might not want
Every 5 years is a good standard.
Beautiful watch. But be very careful when you use smaller width strap. when your wrist is in a position (As if you're doing push ups) The strap can lever the ends of the pins open and the watch can fall off.
Yes, anytime I change the straps on watches I always take some time to tug the strap from different angles, just to make sure that's not going to happen. Would never want to lose such a piece of art wrenching my wrist into an odd position!
Good advice. One time I had a watch strap come loose from one end, when I was walking at work. Luckily I was able to react quickly and catch the watch before it fell off my wrist.

I also love the silver dial, that was my other consideration. And yes, the previous model actually labeled the rotor with "22k" text.
Yes 22. AP uses 24k. The reason that these watchmakers use this high rated gold is that it weighs more and you can have larger cutouts as you see with the JLC but still giving it enough heft to make the mechanism work.
Well I actually saw that it is 18k which makes more sense. Saw it on WatchAdvisor, btw I don’t think anyone does 24 and 22 is the maximum i ever saw

Sometimes the best answer is, first one, then the other. 🙂 At times choosing makes sense but, having both could also be an option! Then it's just a matter of prioritizing which comes before the other. I've experienced that several times.

Problem I have with JLC is that they will not supply parts for repairs no matter how good the technician so you have to send the watch to JLC at twice the price , 1000 dollars for a very minor repair.
I have heard this about JLC, I can understand why it's frustrating when not all brands do it. At the same time, I guess I'd at least be confident in knowing the service standards are maintained because it's the company that's doing the repair. So I can see both sides on that for sure.
Nice watch. I don’t wear suits and that is a dress watch. Getting an accurate movement is pretty easy. If I had that watch, it wouldn’t get within a mile of water.
I don't wear suits either...it goes great with plenty of casual or professional outfits. And accuracy is relative - obviously depending on if you're talking about mechanical vs quartz - but I've been looking at it most next to my GS and it is keeping time better, which is interesting (and impressive).
@JamesCarian I have a GS Snowflake, and it is quartz accurate because of the Springdrive. I have a gold Corum. Incredibly thin, very dressy. Belonged to my father. I rarely wear it because I am terrified of banging it. Your watch gave me a similar vibe. It is so beautiful, I would be conscious I was wearing it all the time. Congratulations. It is high horology and should be worn.

@@JamesCarian They were a popular brand around the 1960’s. The popular watches were thin manual movements. When I inherited the watch, I wasn’t a watch nut and didn’t realize how delicate they were. I overwound the main spring. Watches today usually have a device that prevents that. I don’t ever wear it, because it doesn’t have a sapphire crystal and my heavy hand will destroy it.
I'm having the same problem and can't decide on black or silver.
It is a tough choice absolutely! For me I thought about it in terms of how it plays into my collection. I already have a white dial watch, I had blue, and brown but not black. So that's why I went this one. And I'm kind of building out variety in my darker dials. But if I didn't have a lighter dial piece already I probably would have gone with the silver. That's how I try to decide if I'm ever not sure, see how it fits with the rest of the collection. Hope that helps!

JLC is great but comes with a price. If you're looking for something very similar for less, consider Longines Master collection.
Absolutely, Longines makes some great pieces that are fantastic value. I've not seen anything as visually pleasing from Longines though, I think JLC wins that category by a landslide.

I want to buy one... I hesitate between White and Blue
Having seen all 3 of these models in person, they are truly all lovely. The white is like a nice bright silver color if you like a lighter dial color. The blued seconds hand and moon phase disc give you a subtle bit of contrast to the silver. The blue has a brushed look to it, if you like the color it's a great piece, with more contrast between the dial & hour markers. I picked up this one because I thought it had the most contrast between the black dial & hour markers/moonphase indicator. So yes, genuinely all three are amazing, just depends on what style you prefer!

You're right a GS for the same price is better finished. These watches are OK but still not worth the asking price. Because of the name JLC no one dares say this though...
GS is just an amazing value all around. But in terms of quality I'd say JLC is right there. Besides polishing and dial textures I think they're about on par, though you can get into a GS for less, absolutely.
I think JLC has an X factor not found on Seiko watches. They have a more traditional and elegant style that looks good in formal situations. Grand Seikos are nice to, but their watch cases leave something to be desired. They can be bulky. I prefer traditional style cases.
Sold mine last year (blue dial) fantastic watch and the best looking on the markey but I just couldnt stand the noise from the movment...its absoultly horrible!
I definitely understand that, it's the loudest of any watch that I've seen with the ceramic rotor bearings. But it's still such an awesome piece from JLC...I will gladly look past it!

I still don’t know how to set up the Moon Phase. The Instructions are bad. Does someone know a good Video on it? Or can explain it better than it is in the instructions?
@@JonasReichert1992 look up the most recent full moon and then these instructions will work: Let’s say five days have passed since the last full moon. Orient the moon disc, so the full moon is at the top (and completely visible through the aperture). Then advance the moon disc by four days. Next, if your watch has a date, set it to one day behind the current date (yesterday). Finally, pull out the crown to the time-set position and move the hands past midnight, so the date jumps forward to today’s date. The moonphase should advance around this time to show the lunar stage five days after the full moon has passed.

@@JonasReichert1992 oh man that's also a beautiful watch. But the moonphase should function the same way so those instructions will still apply. Those are pretty standard steps for any moonphase because they all function on a 29.5 day cycle. Great watch! Let me know if it works!

Nice watch. The primary problem is that the clocks do not measure time, but the number of completed laps. It follows that time is a relative concept. Therefore, it is completely unnecessary to use such structures, perhaps only for decoration. But it's too expensive. Our "time" spent on the planet can only be measured by the quality of our thoughts and spirituality.
Then I would suggest you do not buy any watches 😉

I have the earlier version in blue (40) and my only criticism is that being flat and minimalistic it can be taken for a Swatch watch. Unfortunately both these watches are made by the same company.
I see the spirit of owning a JLC as a very romantic gesture between man and time-piece, wearing a JLC on your wrist is like having a secret love affair with yourself, you don't want any random person on the street to love them or to even know what/who they are. You just wanted it for yourself. And (at the most), extend that love to the rare few horology enthusiasts who so naturally engage with the watch at an intimate level without the attention of the world :)

Unfortunately Rubber B doesn't have a size in between what they currently offer, so I will stick with this one. The next size up is too wide (tested it from another watch).
Why a rubber B for a watch with 5 bar? The CF strap is much better

Yep that size is about right! I think there's a lot of personal preference in watches when it comes to size. Depends on the person, the design, case dimensions, etc.

Far far too big for your wrist. So tired of these 39mm watches. 36mm is your upper limit imo.
