- This is a tutorial in Microsoft Flight Simulator (FS2020) showing you how to fly a tricky NDB Approach using the G1000 Nxi. We will not set this up in the GPS and will therefore have to fly it with conventional NAVAIDs and needles. This will use a VOR & NDB for tracking and a DME distance. This is Sparrevohn Airport in Alaska, with lots of mountains and high terrain to avoid.
We will be flying with using the ADF (Automatic Direction Finder) and DME from an nearby VOR/DME station.
This is a challenge for even the most seasoned instrument pilot.

The approach you demonstrated here is highly instructive and, well, terrifying. The airport and conditions you selected, NDB only, no GPS, mountainous terrain, IFR conditions, no viable go around, . . . academic for sure given GPS, but quite a ride.
I agree, definitely one to practice in the sim only! You should give it a go in the C152!
I've been practicing the NDB approaches for UHMD and UHMA... This looks like an absolute blast to try out. The LRRS locations certainly were selected in some spicy locations 😅
This was a fun approach!
I was able to get the DC-6 in on my second go with some questionable visibility. The first one I can blame the sim ATC since they assigned an altitude that put me straight into a mountain haha 😅
Great Video. Good use of notations thru video. Thanks
Thanks, I'll keep them coming!
Nice presentation! I truly miss NDB approaches. Combined with a missed approach hold they build situational awareness like no other. Learning on old steam gauge panels (pre GPS) it's the simplest instrument that requires just twisting in a freq. The dial then tells you everything it can at a glance ;)
I miss having a six pack!
Great video. You are really selling me on MSFS
Excellent video. For a similarly challenging approach, without any navaids, Tenzing-Hillary airport at Lukla, Nepal (VNLK) might be interesting.
Yes, that one is already on my radar. There are some interesting airports in that part of the world!
Awesome video 👍
It would just be nice to have a little briefing before the actual simulator footage to know what the procedure's supposed to be
Thanks! I’m working on striking a balance between the flying and briefing for audience retention and pacing. I’m sure I will figure it out eventually :)
Is the NDB app in the data base? Not sure about the G1000 but we fly the NDB approaches in gps with the NDB on a bearing needle. That way you have gps distance to map.
I wanted to demonstrate it raw data with no GPS assistance. I don’t think FS2020 has the NDB approaches programmed. I could have also set up a direct to the NDB for distance but I wanted to fly as if the GPS info wasn’t available for more of a challenge. I get enough magenta line at work 😂
Did you see something strange to YWLM NDB-Y RWY 30 because I think it appears to me the localizer maybe I did something mistake?
I haven’t flown that approach but if it’s an NDB approach, you shouldn’t be getting any localiser information… maybe it’s from a nearby airfield?
@@Taylair Or I did a mistake. :)
Hi, you use mod or not, to show the chart in your screen?
Thanks
Hi, no I have the chart on my iPad usually , I add it onscreen during editing for the video. I’m not sure if there’s a mod for that in MSFS yet…
