thought ur video was very informative man....i was having an issue with my propeller not turning. then i realized it wasnt even going in gear, so i had to adjust my cables.....long story short im a first time boat owner and this video helped me out a lot...thanks...ignore the etihwcs douche bad.
So it goes straight from forward to reverse and vise versa? I would start by checking for proper operation of the neutral cutoff switch. The momentary stall that it creates allows the gears to disengage. If you watch part 2 of this video I show how to adjust it better.
Too many people that don't have knowledge making videos. The rear cable he is working on is the shift cable (fwd and rev) to the outdrive, the other cable comes from the remote shifter. In addition there is another cable that goes to the throttle.
A boat Im fixing to get has an early 90s OMC Cobra 4.3L V6.(Its a Sunbird Corsair 185). It has a linkage problem to where it wont shift into neutral. Any suggestions as to what it might be?
Hi, my friend has a rigid raider, it's a ex military boat, he has the engine out and has asked me to look at it for him. I am a car mechanic and have no knowledge of marine!. I see the shift cables that go to a lever type connection on the engine but I don't see where they connect to on a gearbox?. What should I look for?
whats does turning that piece of metal do? and how do you know which direction it needs to go. Could it be possible you just have bad cables and need to replace the entire cable?
I havent taken it out yet because the lady that has it didnt know how to fix it,so she let it sit out in her field for several years. She says it has sat for about 2 years, but to me,it looks like its been alot longer than that. The floor, sinks in some near the drivers seat&the side wood under the upholstery on the side is rotten&the back seat has collapsed as well. The motor hasnt been started in 2 years, and theres alot of patches done to the hull. I have a video of it I just uploaded on my channel
There are two cables. One is a throttle cable the other is a shift cable. Throttle cable goes to engine. The shift cable goes to the outdrive where the gears are. If you do a google search it usually is pretty easy to find parts diagrams online.
A lot of do it yourself'er don't know that you do need to change the lower shift cable on a mercruiser when you find yourself turning up the ldle to keep your boat running when shifting into neutral. That is a sure sign your lower shift cable is bad when idle is up to keep it running because your interrupt switch cannot do it's job when shifting.
Your problem is with your "interrupter "switch. If the boat goes into gear and not out then your interrupter is not functioning properly. The interrupter is NOT a neutral safe switch. And sorry to say is that merely adjusting your barrel nut will not fix this problem. Adjusting the barrel nut will only effect how far the cable travels in either direction. The interrupter switch actually stays stationary while the bracket moves up and down to actuate the switch.
@@keithdickinson6045 No that is not what it sounds like! Even if your switch is not working you should still be able to engage and disengage, Although it is not good for the drive but it should still work! The problem sounds like a bunch of stretched cables! Don’t forget there are three cables, Two from the shifter to the engine and then one from the engine that goes through your transom to your stern drive!
I like your boat and what your doing, but you really dont explain how to do a cable adjustment in general, for everyones boat, not just the problem your having,,and you gotta move that camera slower man
Don't do this theirs a mesurments for the drive cable on the old units its five and something inch then they went to 6 on later drives you have to look it up but you don't turn the adj and check it? This is all set with enginnot running. Shift interrupter switch no adjustment make sure centering springs good not broker mercruser was pulling there hair out in the 70s with guys like this screwing with the adjustments!
He did not learn that in merc school. This is y the product gets bad pub. About 70 percent of the videos are bad info on hear. I looked at a lot of them theas people never attended a merc Volvo or omc class and their telling you how to screw your boat up don't figure? Its intertaning if nothing else.
Your information is on this subject is wrong and you're giving people bad advice. Cables don’t just go out of adjustment. Parts wear and your lower shift cable could be the problem / need replacing. First of all, the boat has three cables; throttle and shifter from the controls at the helm and a lower shift cable that goes to the stern drive. The lower shift cable should be set while in forward gear to 5 7/8 inches from the center of the brass anchor to the center of the eyelet on early models to about 1975. For models newer than that, it should be 6 inches. PERIOD! The cable that you said was the throttle is actually the helm shifter cable. It too has an adjustment and if you’re not getting reverse, the anchor bolt for it may need to be adjusted in its slot. But as I stated earlier, the lower cable and too much play from wear may be the issue. Get yourself a repair manual like one from Seloc. It has step by step procedures for doing this job correctly and covers the older models.
I have a 73 searay mercruiser. 2 cables go to the back and connect to an actuator with wires to it with a contactor. Then a cable goes to some kind of tube looking device with wires coming to it. Mine wont shift at all and it's the lower cable that goes to the shifter that's probably bad but I dont know what the device is for.
This guy made two videos of how not to adjust your shift cabels! Y do you make a video when you don't have a clue what your doing? Hope your not a Dr. Lol they bury. There mistakes stick to waxing and polishing get a mechanic!!
Making your adjustments in the water is the dumbest idea I have ever heard, And no this is not how you adjust your cables! This is how you teach people how to adjust their cables and ruin their sterndrives! All of these shifting issues can be fixed in your yard without ever even starting your engine! The problem is there are a few more components that are involved with the shifting that everyone overlooks! If I can make my 1987 4.3L OMC Cobra shift almost as smooth as the new electronic shifters, You should most definitely be able to fix a MerCruiser! No I am not a Marine Mechanic but I am a Master Auto Mechanic! And yes I am 100% aware of all of the components that differentiate a marine engine from an automotive engine due to all of the safety regulations!
@etihwcs and you are obviously a man of higher education. I was smart enough to fix my own boat.
Thanks for posting this. Gives me some idea of what I need to do.
Good video , I too have an 84 Cobalt BR19 , same issue on mine . I appreicate it !

Are those the Attwood stabilizers ? how do you like them ?

The brass barrels adjust the stroke length of the cable.

grazie mille!!! good job
Where did you get those rag containers?

fireman7753 .
Had to adjust the antler.
motor stays in reverse when put into neutral. 5.0 alpha 1996
What type of stern drive is that.
Hi can you remove interrupter switch without removing cables on this engine
Thanks

Mine will go into forward it will also go into reverse I just can’t get it back in neutral?
Sounds like your shift cutout switch is not functioning. forums.iboats.com/filedata/fetch?id=6968289&d=1515598425

This is not the way to do this! There is a measurement to set it to.Before 1976 5 7/8" after 6".
what if your engine was on fire and you had to reach into the flames to get that extinguisher?
That is a fire suppression extinguisher that engages automatically in case of fire .
I watched that first adjustment and you only turned it a half turn
haha, noticed that too, back and forth, overall 1/2 turn lol

So a cable is not a part that could go bad? da fuck outta here.
