    So the one important step that help me is probably the last thing you mentioned, which was adjusting the stud at the end upwards until reverse engages. That’s what finally got mine shifting perfectly. Thanks for the tutorial.

    Great video, thanks! I did all the adjustments, and had prop lock in both gears. But when i actually drive it it still gets stuck in forward gear when shifting back to neutral. When i than go and re check to see if prop is locked the prop rotates. Everything "appears" to be locked into place still regarding the cables, etc. Would this mean that my cables are shot and need to be replaced? '99 mercruiser i/o. No idea if they're original cables or not

    Will filling the remote monitor from the top work as in the video? I always thought you had to fill from the bottom until oil seeped from the vent.Then close the vent and continue to fill until the monitor showed oil at the operating range.

    Hola, tengo un Mercruiser Apha One Gen 2, 3.0 L, montado en una Bayliner Classic 1992,mi problema es que la placa, con la horquilla metalica, que tiene que mover la ruedita para el corte de revoluciones, no se mueve al accionar avate o atras, con lo cual no baja de revoluciones y rascan las marhas. ¿tengo que cambiar el cable? si por lo demas va suave y cambia las marchas.

    • @ShopseiNetSterndrive
      @ShopseiNetSterndrive  Před 9 lety

      I would first check your shift cables and remote control at the helm to see if they need to be replaced. Either of those could definitely cause your drive to slam into gear like that if they are worn or binding. Also, the other concern would be if you find excessive metal in the stern drive when draining the fluid. If so, you could possibly have damage inside the lower unit from the hard shifting.

      Thank you for the Quick Answer. I adjusted using your guidance and still had a little grinding in forward so I tightened 5 turns on the upper cable and now it jumps into gears perfectly. However it doesn’t return into neutral when the remote unit is in neutral. I will have to move the remote unit into reverse to find neutral OR shut of the engine. The same when I am in reverse. Then I have to take the remote unit into forward to get it to neutral (or shut off the engine). Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this? Best

      No, that was the foot oil - for the outdrive gears. The trim uses hydraulic oil - separate reservoir usually underneath the pump.

    When u check for ingagment forward and reverse how do you know if the dog is fulley in gaged or just part way? Just because the prop won't turn in one direction don't mean u have full engagement . you might be only half engaged or mabey less?

    • @justinwebb9566
      @justinwebb9566 Před 7 lety

      when putting it into gear you also spin the prop so it locks. If you are pushing in on the cable while doing the 6 inch measurement and you have turned the prop counterclockwise it will be engaged all the way.

  • @lloydcisco3027
    @lloydcisco3027 Před 7 lety +1

    The lowest position in the slotted. Anchor pin is the least amount of clutch travel . you have to spin the prop opiset of the lock up and listen to the ratchet in forward and reverse and balance that sound that will tell u if that dog clutch is fulley engaged. And you can take some from reverse and ad to forward. Or forward to reverse if you don't do this you have no clue on how much engagement yo have when your done .

    I'm not able to get the cable to shorten up to 6 inches. Is it possible to shorten the cable by taking off the plastic end and trimming off some of the cable. It looks like the square studs unscrew to release the cable. I have tried to adjust the threaded tube but it doesn't seem to be long enough. The cable was replaced with the previous stern drive which I had to replace because the prior owner never put oil in the drive and the upper gears burned up.

    • @ShopseiNetSterndrive
      @ShopseiNetSterndrive  Před 9 lety +1

      Make sure that the inner wire is all the way to the end of the plastic piece with the eyelet. There is a little inspection hole that you should not be able to see through because the inner wire is blocking it. If that is okay, I would suspect some other problem is not letting you get your 6 inches. possibly there is some debris in the cavity that the shift slide goes into that is stopping it from going all the way.

    • @ShopseiNetSterndrive
      @ShopseiNetSterndrive  Před 6 lety

      If a new shift cable was installed, make sure that you can only see one thread of the shift cable nut. If it is sticking out further than that, it can cause the shift slide to hit the nut and cause stalling.

      I spent countless hours talking to tech, I even installed the New style Mercruiser shift plate Assy 864363A 1, Merc shift cables and Merc Quicksilver shifter...the initial adjustment just could not be made, not enough threads. Sorry to be such a P.I.T.A.

If I remember correctly the 6" center to center setting I could never get because there were not enough threads on the cable coming up from the drive.
      Any guidance in advance would be nice.
      And I apologize for my nasty comments, I am sure this will be great once all the OMC stuff is out of the picture.

    • @ShopseiNetSterndrive
      @ShopseiNetSterndrive  Před 6 lety

      If you can't get the 6 inches, that could be a problem, but it really wouldn't affect having to shut the engine off to get it out of gear. That is strictly the shift cutout switches job. We are available via 813-925-7127 if you have any questions when installing. You will need to fashion a mounting bracket for the shift bracket.

    • @leevogel9487
      @leevogel9487 Před 6 lety +1

      I take back all the negative comments I left, after careful examination I found the inner cable of the lower shift cable(the one to the drive) was too long, never could get the 6" measurement, I shortened the inner cable slightly and drilled the plastic barrel so the cable goes slightly past the witness hole.
      Works PERFECTLY now, I highly recommend SEI products now.
