FFIX Grand Dragon Early Kill on Disc 1 without Quina

- Will not depend on some luck and use Quina and his/her/its "Limit Glove" which require 1HP
to deal 9999 damage (which suckz, i hate her/mih/it). Will give this Dragon a good fight....
Since Quina is not required we will only use 3 characters which were Zidane, Vivi and Freya..

The equipement system on this game was BOSS !!
Unforgettable game...
So true!
I remember watching this years ago, when it had only like 200 views..
Good job to you :3
Nice strategy, liked the music remix of the black mage village too. Best FF for me, so many memories, such a rich story, so much character development. Keep up the good work, more FFIX vids! :D
My roommate was shocked when I told her to have everyone with a Coral ring and to have reflect on the entire party, thundaga hit, but was reflected 4 times, the dragon killed itself.
stevenbelmont that's how i used to farm the dragons
How to get coral ring earlier? Steal what monster?
@@kongcrit let freya win the hunt carnival
Howd u get more thane 1 coral. Ring that early in game
@@danniedwards5750 you cant...
All genius is simple! During the ten years, I've never been able to defeat him at such an early stage. This fabulous game still continues to amaze me!
Wonderful job! Thank you, now I got this bastard ;D
I always just used a thunder ring and absorbed the lightning attacks, no idea if it was any better than this. Nice strat :)

Vivi always have been a BADASS
Gj with the video ^^
I wonder what are you gonna to do with all the time you saved typing "U" instead of "You" every single time .
lol u funny
homura87 o u
u iz dum dum
u mad
u stoopid brah?
i remember farming this dragon till lv 50+, and then i got to disc 2 where my steiner and garnet still under 20 lol
It better to grind late game since your gear determines how high stats are raised per level
My Steiner and garnet are level 1 still on disc 2
You made me LOL when you added the box next to the Dragon that said, "Darn, I should've used Poison Claw!" LOL! :D I was worried he was going to do that!! Lots of risks in this battle but you did it awesomely! Great video and great job! I will have to try this. When I first played this game and encountered this guy he did a thundaga on all of us and killed us instantly! I was like, "Woah! Ok, back in the grotto!" ;-)
I understand the challenge here and am proud of you. Many people comment without ever reading the description I bet. I know it says no Disc 2 onwards and no Quina. Those people just have to come to point out the battle would be easier if you used Quina and items from Disc 2. Ironically they won't understand greatness if they don't realize the most basic things.
I remember beating it with Eiko, I managed to land Phoenix summon killing it and resurrect the whole team. Felt boss.
makes me wanna play legend of dragoon again...
This strategy is fine. The down sides to it is the large amount of Gil that you have to put into Phoenix Down and Ethers to make it possible. If you don't want to worry about that as much you can wait until you get to Treno and buy a Reflect Ring from the auction house. Auto Reflect Thundaga back at it with 1-3 chars depending on how much time you put into AP grinding (with 1 requiring none) Keep Coral Ring on somebody and always leave a char to revive fallen members.
Good work. I remember fighting this dude and didn’t stand a chance because you can fight him so early in the game.
I wasn't having it, I did not want to move on with the story until I bet it.. eventually I did lol
let me guess: if i win with zidane the hunt festival, i wont be able to get the coral ring again...?
-____-
I won with Zidane and I have one, just search online the ways u can get one
@@luizalbertoportasio2719 lol, this was 7 years ago. i already played this game to death.
thnx anyway.

Rod and Lightening Staff haha
Amazing strategy, because using this could allow you to max your characters in Disc 1! The grand dragon is one of the best experience monsters.
Wow, that was pretty awesome! I just assumed that it wasn't possible to kill that thing at such a low level. Well worth it for the xp. Great strategy.
Correct. Due to the nature of stat growth in FF9 being dependant on what equipment the character has when the level Quina will definitely miss out on more stats by joining the party 'pre-leveled'. Unless you're going for a 'perfect' run though it won't be detrimental to you as characters still have regular stat growth as well.
I learned a deep lesson, don't be aggressive, prioritize safety first, be patient and don't rush thing, take any opportunity that comes.
It's dangerous outside, Kupo!
use quina, eat nymph which is around clergy, learn night, put the dragon to sleep, equip insomnia, use blizzara, much easier
This vid is if you haven't get quina or too lazy to get her
Indeed, better get Quina and limit glove those nasty dragons.
none of y'all heard of the Quina 1 shot with lvl 5 death
@@dustinmckavanagh Really? that's way easier than limit glove. I don't remember if they're lvl5 and there's that magic available yet.
@@claudiourrutiaaranguiz9281 you're right in that can't get lv5 death that early :( its just what I did on my most recent playthrough
Perfect guide! Thanks so so much! I'm a grinder gamer, and can't fully enjoy the game till i can flick all the enemies to death xD
Damn! Well played! I pulled up some gamefaq walkthroughs and nobody tries to fight them early...im on lv.70 already!
Although you had bad spelling mistakes, this is a really intelligent strategy.
I think the consensus of FF9 grinding was waiting for better equipment so usually, they would keep the character as weak as possible (but still can take on bosses) in the first 2 discs then when you began to have better gear, that's when you level up.
Quite impressive. I knew there must be a way to defeat it when i first encountered it, but didn't bother to take the time to figure it out.
I could never be bothered trying to figure all this out as a kid. And even now, as an adult, with a high I.Q, I still can't be bothered.
*_Esqueci de Perder pra Freya no Festival pra ganhar o Coral Ring, foda._*
Yo, gave your vid a like because I really liked the tutorial-ish part about it in the beginning, good effort :)
Cool video, love the music!
couldve done a bit better if youd have abused wait atb setting more
You make it too hard for yourself. Use tent(s) on the Dragon till he's blind. Works fast for me. Now you're close to immune against his physical attacks. As for the rest, have Freya win the hunting contest, so she get the thunder ring, which makes her immune (or absorb, I don't quite remember), his Thundaga. From there, it's quite easy, even if it takes some time. I leveled from 13 to 50+ on that spot. Was there for dozens of hours.
+Alessia di Milano why
Kenneth Benjes well BECAUSE....I'm a Final Fantasy freak...yeah woman also can be freaks. You can't ask a freak "why?". Freaks do freaky things, there is no reason to be found. :P
+Alessia di Milano No need to bring up woman in that.
NinjaOnANinja I've done it only because I'm sick when guys get big eyes looking at me and saying "what, YOU play video games?" Why not?
Alessia di Milano But there is really nothing beyond your name bringing any attention to being a girl. And I spoke to dudes named some stupid ass shit, so I doubt the name alone counts for anything.
i remember using Quinna spell Sleep after eat female monster, forgot her names then use Vivi venom/poison staff i get from chocobo digging .. zidane for steal, freya for support. feel genius at that time 😑😑
It is worth having Vivi focus a few times instead of casting Blizzara right away. 3 focuses nearly doubles his damage output, so instead of 10 castings, you can pull it off in 3 focuses + 5 castings.
@arriesdavid i think i´m gonna do new game and try it myself : ) btw how the hell did you got the rod with blizzara ? for me it´s an impossible steal , i once failed steal like 100 times lol
how the hell did this arrive on my front page in 2023
I see that some people, after all this years of CZcams, still haven't learned how to read description section.
Sorry, that is to say they have regular stat growth and then stat bonuses based on equipment. Didn't word that very well initially.
I know this is an ancient video but if anyone happens to be here in 2022, i have to say: Just put whatever personal prejudices you have against Quina aside and use them! Think what you want about the character but it's a fact they are S tier in combat for many reasons. It takes minutes to get set up and while yes it does require SOME luck to keep Quina at 1hp, they do max damage and then can eat the dragon the next round. (and later in the game they can one shot the dragons!) Make sure to save after each fight and reset if Quina gets hit, trust me the grind will go insanely faster. I use to grind levels like this video did back when i was a kid and didn't know any better, man I was embarrassed at the time wasted grinding when i discovered the power of Quina. Honestly this is all a moot point now, becuase modern versions of the game you can buy off PS4/5 and PC have cheats that let you do 9999 per hit and once you are strong enough to not get 1-shot, you are unkillable! Thanks for reading my Ted Talk!
man you play well, you're very smart, I remember playing Final Fantasy IX, in 2002, this dragon has always killed me, has to have patience and can not be aggressive, always wait to use the phoenix down, and the all the right accessories!
FF9 conquered the world!! S2 S2 S2 S2 S2 S2
BY BRAZIL!
Great music selection and very informative video! 5/5
ATB fights like this are so much fun.
Good strategy I have discovered same strategy as you, but on this video you are still too rush...anyway, you should first revive death team members and then do a final hit to prevent of level difference of your chars.
Very clever strategy! If memory serves me correctly, if you eat the dragon with Quina, you don't get any exp? Not sure if I would have the patience for this strategy. It is totally worth it, and will make Disc 2 and Burmecia easy. But, I imagine it must have taken you a while to get enough Gil to pay for all those phoenix downs, and to max out your skills?
I just got the Reflect Ring from the Chocographs Quest, gave everyone auto-reflect and then threw those blizzagas multiplied by the number of characters on my team. It also returns the Thundagas. So, in the end, if you are lucky, you may win in few turns. You still need a some phoenix dawns though.
There is no reflect ring in the chocograph.
Oh! You are right! I got it in the Auction House with Dagger. I totally forgot. It's been years since I last played it. xD
I just loved using that strategy anywhere when i first found out ^^ Auto reflect on everyone, targeting your whole team with a magic spell and watching the enemy take the damage ^^ hahaha
nice video! in my game, i used Cypress Pile as weapon of Vivi, wherein Bio magic was used. It has the same amount of damage to the dragon and with status effect afterwards! The Cypress Pile was found from Chicobo's Hunt, Disc 1 of course.
Wow; what were your exact stats after that battle? I'm just curious, since you jumped all the way to the Level 20s. Talk about overpowered at that point in the game. :)
What's this about using Quina? I rarely used Q so no clue about what you were talking about on the title; I do believe I did something similar to defeat a GD. For me it was more for laughs but I had to admit the lvl bonus was great.
@arriesdavid really!?....did you overflow your time?......or did you use GS codes?.......weird.......last time I checked no one except you posted that they got EXII while power levelling w/ GD....
1. Where you got that epic sound WHILE the fight ;) i love the FF IX music.
2. Wouldnt it be better to equip Vivi with the Coral Ring?
I did that as a child. Once you receive the reflector ring (not sure if the English version uses the same name) for using automatic reflection, it's quite simple, especially with Quina.
But without reflection and without Quina - it's way different.
Took me a real shitwhole of time. So, respect for doing this!
It needs a bit luck too because you are doomed if this guy uses blizzard on all members. And yet I think the end was a bit dump as you could have healed every membership before killing that guy so every one of them would grow up.
You will also want to overlevel Marcus as much as possible the few times you are in control of him. Some of his stats will transfer to Eiko, but not his level. So you could have Marcus on level 99 and transfer some of his stats to Eiko on level 20-30 or whatever she is when she joins you. :D
How does that work? Sounds weird.
@@123TauruZ321 oh, the game never really explains it all that well, only gives slight indications, but equipment with stats bonus, it actually affects your stats at level up. Like it won't give you perm +2 Str just because the weapon is that, but it will +2 a secret bonus str stats, which when reaches 16 gives you an actual permanent stat bonus. Cool? Well, Marcus shares his stat bonuses with Eiko, but not the actual level. Eiko's level is determined by the average team level. This means that if you level up Marcus with stat improving equipment to level 99, and only him, keeping the rest of the team's level low, as you'd want anyway to level with the best stat improving equipment only found late game, you can get the stat bonuses for Eiko twice.
Sounds wierd but it's true. If you run a low level game at least until that part and put Marcus on overlevel grind, you will notice a huge difference in stats when Eiko joins you, try overleveling Marcus with magic-oriented gear, that bonus will transfer to Eiko and she can have the highest magic in the game, resulting in stronger summons and healing for her, not to mention that her hp/mp that normally is close to Vivi's, will also be higher.
Congrats , I could only beat it on Disc 1 just using Quina . You are some kind of example for me to try harder
well done mate! have you figured the way to defeat him out yourself?
In Gizamaluke's Grotto find the room with the 2 moogles, on the back wall there is some ivy, climb that and then just run around in the plains.
O.o The menus are blue in the ps3 ports? D: I'm sitting here playing it on my ps2 with the original ps1 discs that I've had since I was little... :')
@arriesdavid I see then my last question is, is this possible in an EXIIPGWSF aka Excalibur II Perfect Game w/o Skipping FMVs?....
if u watch the video carefully, thats how i show you... or if u prefer to equip certain items to increase something to defeat this in disc 1 then feel free to demonstrate on a video.. ill gladly edit my video and put ur suggestion if i found it better
i remember just leveling up a bit at the winds then grinding on those dragons right after getting out of the cave
And what's the point of giving up Quina? Anyway, when the GG passes through the story, Quina can already join the party. Everything becomes much easier and faster (only 2 moves in a battle -> Limit Glove +Eat), especially if you are going to get Excalibur 2.
@sarachi2000 use the bandit, hes right lol. i forgot.. anyway u can get one ice staff on ur journey to cleyra in disc 2, i kinda forgot where exactly but just try the chest boxes there or scanning ur enemy b4 u steal, they might carry one. then once u got one quickly go back to gizamaluke to battle it..
A good way to level up but:
1) you'll miss many the level-up stat bonuses (make some searches about FF9 stat gains system, somebody here will have some surprises)
2) I didn't tried but give the dragon a tent: with Silent, Blind and Poison, it can be a way easier
3) Limit Glove is less time and item consuming: in the grotto, kill Kweena, save, rex him and reload until he has 1 HP, save and go outside; in the battle, cast Limit Glove and finish him with Vivi"s blizza (or a 2nd LG if you are lucky)
I'm glad I'm not the only one who attacks these beasts early on. Such a great way to grind.
seriously??? o.0
how many hours did it took you? i frustratedly managed to level them up to 50 and it took me ages lol
Man Freya is psychic with that cover. It isn't jump in the way at the last second it's shift in front of the attack before he even begins to move.
And wouldn't a couple of focuses spare you having to use that ether?
Disc 1, and you mention Treno, in disc 2. okay. It's disc 1, what'd you expect his level to be? 50? >.>
You can also wear silk shirts if you have coral ring on someone else and halve thundaga
But how does doing this trick help you get the sword? I'm not trying to rag, I am seriously considering giving it a try.
Epic, very very nice, need maybe a little bit of luck but it sure is awesome!
Oh, and this would give you time to throw tents at the beginning, which would inflict poison, which kills it even faster.
The point of the video is just to prove that it can be done. I'm sure he knows all of the tricks by now.
@1983dogma The reset after 100h doesn't work, I've tried myself...When you reach 100h, the timer JUST changes color, but the game time is not reset. There are rumorus stating that after 1000h the timer will turn white again, making it possible to find the exalibur II in memoria. But those are just rumors ;)
Back then I didn't had Internet. I could not find strategies like this, I had to improvise my own.
OMG what a great strategy . Awesome
....darn this! Makes me want to start another play through of this game, and attempt this along the way!
Where can I download this fire ass black mage village remix???
You count as a final boss, specifically Lavos' 3-part core.
Ahaha 8:08 epic ether miss and then the dragon choose thundaga to zidane...if the dragon choose Poison claw, it will be ended. LOL. But nice video😚😚
that is a great strategy but i am curious as to why u did not use soul blade. u had the ogre equipped and if i remember correctly the ogre's soul blade ability is darkness. u could have lowered the dragon's poison claw hit rate lowering the use of phoenix downs. I'm also certain that the dragon is not immune to darkness either.
the reference was purely as a comparison. the comparison being that neither makes much sense. if u took it differently then i appologize. also... i know other ppl have different opinions. i never once said my opinion was the only one or that it was correct one. im not so stupid as to think im infalible. i simply gave you MY opinion on your action and post. if you don't like it thats fine, it doesn't bother me one bit.
That is Ice cream, it's sweet and cold.
Freya, didn't get lvl up. ^^
That's cause she got ko.
Hey, don't forget that if u get the auto-reflect ring from the auction house u can equip it on all ur party, it negates the thunder attack, and Vivi can cast ice on the party to multiply the damage against the dragon. Also this is great for maxing out Frea's Max attack were the damage is based off the number of dragons u have killed. It eventually becomes a Max damage cheap attack just like zidane's Thievery attack based off the number of times he's stolen
i was doing exactly this 10 years ago with the chocobo quest and vivi get the weapon to give him ice + freya absorb thunder with his coraline and zidane and freyja was basicely a back up vivi was doing all of the attack ^^
Vivi's avoiding animation is epic XD 7:24
I like this, it's a very honest strategy with no resets. It;s also something I didn't think was possible. Do you reckon it;s possible to wing this fight without a coral ring? you see, I like winning the festival of the hunt, just coz... so I would never have a coral ring, I suppose with Vivi capable of doing 1300+ and Quina possibly getting a shot of limit glove, it's just a matter of having someone survive the thunder.
Nope even with the PS4 version having a infinite HP/MP/Trance cheat Coral rings or AUTO reflect on all is still a must at low lvs a full party Thundaga can hit the entire party for OVER 3000 damage a SINGLE target one can top out as much as OVER 6000 damage.
In Gizamaluke's Grotto where the 2 moogles are, you climb up the vine. Odd place though, as I thought that was the correct way to go when I played, until I got owned by this exact dragon.
well if you do the chocobo hot and cold game you can get the oak staff and that might help. all you hav eto do is get the treasure near the shore past cleyra and your chocobo will turn light blue. then you can get even more treasure. in one of those will be the oak staff.
if you turn your captions on there will be a pop up message out of the dragon saying "darn it, shoulda used poison claw" lol
But no closed captions came...
where is this music from? I hate sites where you have to do a survey to get access
yes it is.. good guessing :D
its a remix by ocremix dot org called Under a New Moon
Cheers!
AWESOME
i never really attempted this in disc 1
i grind at the grand dragon at the part before you go to outer continent
my tactics
1) all 4 chars at the back row
2) all 4 with antibody
3) zidane/quina w/ coral rings
4) garnet/vivi w/ auto reflect
5) zidane w/ cover girls and distract
6) vivi blizzara and quina w/ limit glove
the thing that makes it hard for me is the dragon's melee attacks especially with quina the 1 HP and healing chars with auto reflect cause i don't have reflect null yet.
dont they have items that raise your characters evasion? that would also help against that poison claw of his
Let's be honest, who actually ever uses Quina in their party when they have a choice not to?
@arriesdavid sometimes the method could fail depending on your luck. if he attacks and doesn't miss with poison claw, then yeah it can be a problem or he's just a low level. @thefreak834 didn't prepare right i guess.
theres a much better way to do this, if you teach all your party members the auto-reflect hability then the dragon kills itself when it casts thundaga no the hole party
Mind sharing how you get auto reflect on disk one.
@@namebn It can be synthesized for 7000 gil, an Anklet, and a Madain's Ring at Black Mage Village, Alexandria, Treno, Lindblum, and Daguerreo, and bought at the Treno Auction House. I think its first available at treno auction house, dont remember exactly its been a long time since i played this game.
This is too risky 😂
You're lucky the granny didn't attack claws at 8:16
Lol @ still commenting on a video from a game that released a million years ago. I am actually starting ff9 for the 4th or 5th time tonight. Last time was about 9 or 10 years ago. Never could defeat this dragon, maybe with your help i can! Final Fantasy VII, IX and X FTW!!!
