- This week we are so excited to welcome NBA All-Star Jamal Mashburn (Dallas Mavericks, Miami Heat, Charlotte Hornets) to The Old Man and the Three! Mash was truly an amazing guest. He got into what he sees when watching today’s NBA and how he compares it to where the league was in the 1990s and 2000s. He also shared great stories about playing for Rick Pitino at the University of Kentucky, why he thinks Pitino is the best teacher of the game, and how he thinks Pitino was ahead of his time. Then, Mash discusses his own skillset, one that many would also consider to be ahead of its time in the 90s. JJ and Mash also have an in-depth discussion about basketball skill development in the present day and how it does or doesn’t translate to the NBA. Mash also shares what Michael Jordan once told him in a one-on-one game, and what he remembers about playing in possibly the greatest NCAA basketball game ever played (Kentucky vs. Duke and the Christian Laettner shot). New York Knicks guard Josh Hart then joins for a draft of Things That Should Be Illegal.

Jamal's basketball knowledge is undeniable. We come away from this interview with the feeling of having really learned fundamental things about basketball. Thanks to Mash for showing us his basketball IQ and jj is always good at his job

I saw Mash at ORD airport and had a short conversation with him. I pretended like I didn’t know who he was. We just engaged in small talk. He said he was traveling for business. He talked about his restaurants and some other businesses. Really, really nice and down to earth guy. Didn’t bring up basketball at all.
Then he stood up and I pretended like he was just 6’8 for no reason and we parted ways 😂

As a Bulls and Warriors fan, I met Bron, AD and Quinn Cook outside of Pabu in SF on my way home from work. Acted like I was just chilling with some giants for no reason, and you see past the noise. Quality human beings.

Definitely have Jamal back on sometime. I don't think anyone I've listened to analytically and take-wise has had a better mix of old school and modern basketball. Loved hearing him talk about the game in his day and how it has changed.

Amazing interview. Mashburn is so much smarter and more interesting than 80% of the NBA podcasters.
He doesn't need to be but I'd love to see him more involved in NBA discussions.
Also, i have to say that JJ once again proves that he's leagues ahead in the NBA podcast space. The questions and directions he goes off to after hearing Mashburn talk is so interesting and informative.
Sure not many laughs or comedy but it's smart basketball talk and as a basketball nerd. I love it.

Great interview. Always liked Jamal when he played but back then you never really got a chance to hear them talk and express themselves like you do with players these days. So its really nice to hear from him now, very articulate and interesting guy to listen to. Seems like a really nice person.

Wow, this is one of the most cerebral conversations about the NBA I've ever heard, especially the evolution of the styles and how teams and individuals went through it. I love that Jamal was one of the first two implement the modern style of bigs being able to pass, dribble, shoot, play the "point", etc.

Aside from Tim Legler, I think Mash might be the most eloquent NBA player guest on JJ's pod so far.
I used to model his post up turn around fadeaway when I was 12 or 13...what a legend, always used him in Courtside '98 for N64 too!
The best Old Man and the Three draft moment remains the time when Tommy called Victoria’s Secret undeniable in the mall draft, but Josh Hart leading us off with the ethics of cousin marriage is a close second.

As someone who is in the stage of learning more about the nuances of the game, this was such a delight to watch. I rarely get to hear from players of that time period since I was born in the early 2000’s. This was such an insightful and nuanced discussion. DONT forget about the full-court press. One of the first to really utilize that during the 90's. He had the best conditioning---and had deep plug-play benches that could wear down a lot of the teams they played.

Kinda funny to hear Mash explain to JJ how a Duke mega star was looked at/treated. Lol. If anybody would know that feeling it would be JJ.
good episode, one thing though JJ is that poor driving isn't the root cause of traffic. It's the fact that in most cases people have no alternative but to use the roads. Tokyo has perhaps the greatest rail system in the world, which is why they are able to have roads with no traffic.
