    CRITICS' PRAISE FOR THE BOOK
    "Miyamoto Musashi: A Life in Arms is an impressive work of scholarship, offering insanely detailed recounts of Musashi’s battles and movements, some so richly rendered that you’d swear De Lange was present at the time, taking notes." - San Francisco Book Review
    “If anyone is qualified to fill in the missing details of Musashi’s life, it is De lange, who has surely done more research on the subject than any other non-Japanese…He has painted a remarkably vibrant portrait of Musashi, one that reveals all the contradictions of a remarkable life full of triumphs and disappointments, thrilling victories as well as bitter losses…This book is unquestionably a must-read for any student of budō. - Kendō World
    "Miyamoto Musashi: A Life in Arms is highly recommended to anyone who is interested in the biography of this most interesting man who has inspired generations of swordsmen and manga fans alike." - Iaido Journal
    "This is perhaps one of the most vital and important texts on the life of Miyamoto Musashi. De Lange has searched the original military records of the campaigns Musashi was involved with and other supporting documents to provide the first accurate assessment of Musashi's life in the English language.” - Irish Fighter Magazine
    "If you are looking for a good read and a fantastic resource into the period in which Musashi lived then this is a great addition to your Koryu Library” - Kaigan Dojo
Sjok

    I'm caught up in the contradiction that is his life.
    I find it interesting that so many including myself praise his life and accomplishments but even they are contradictory to our current society. Let's face it, he was a murderer. I know he joined actual military campaigns but he also challenged warriors outside the war scene. Even his very first battle was not something that was necessary and he killed his opponent. This would be unheard of in our society. Then perhaps more important aspect is that he discovered the Way through this method which is another thing that is contradictory to our current society.

      Krumple Themal
      Hi,
      I think you are right, there was a kind of madness in Musashi's behavior, especially in his early years and his early duels, as you point out. In my book I try to explain this against his troubled relationship with his equally troubled father. I do believe that in old age, through Buddhist practice, he found a certain equilibrium...

    • @ledbizkits6885
      @ledbizkits6885 Před 7 lety +5

      Krumple Themal you can't compare the actions of someone who lived hundreds of years ago, in a very different society to western even for the time, to the principles of today's morality. He did what he had to, all those who he fought knew what they were getting into, killing was his way of earning a reputation.

    • @zoesdada8923
      @zoesdada8923 Před 6 lety +2

      The western idea of murder is based on the Christian dogma of the confessional, which was only founded as a means for the church to make money by taking tithes as a form of penance. Also the way of bushido is to live every moment as if you are already dead. That death is a forgone conclusion. If you live by these precepts the preconceived ideal that all killing is bad doesn't make much sense. Especially when other men would gladly take advantage of weakness.

    • @zerosaber257
      @zerosaber257 Před 5 lety +2

      Back then martial arts meant something other than self defence. It was beautiful because the risks and passions involved are real and consentual. It might as well be a separate existence from our own.
      Nowadays only thugs, syndicates, and other shady business type fight to the death and there is nothing beautiful about it. Modern violence is ugly as hell.

    I've read the novel Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa, and I guess because of that I am blinded by myths and cannot separate the fact from the legend. That being said I have a few questions that I hope can be answered.
    Was Matahachi ever a real friend of Musashi's? Was the story between them true by any means?
    Was Musashi really originally named Takezo? Is the name Takezo actually Musashi in Chinese spelling?
    I have a lot more questions but these are the top of the barrel. lol

      Hi, In my research for the book I could not find any trace of a man called Matahachi...
      When Musashi was young he was called Bennosuke...

    • @richard-gg8un
      @richard-gg8un Před 3 lety

      Matahachi never existed and Takezo was never Musashi's childhoohood name.. the author of that Musashi novel said that his work was purely fiction after it was treated an empirical account of Musashi's life. Eiji even felt the blame of the exaggeration of Musashi's story for the most part
