  • With the bike virtually ready for it's MSVA test, here is a rundown and walk around of what I have done to satisfy the manual. Everyone will have their own take on this and I've probably gone slightly ott but will hopefully pass!

    The one thing I didn't like about the upside down forks is front mudguard availablity.

      Yea I'm also trying to source front and rear mudguards that sit close to the tyres not a fan of the motocross type I've got the same rear mudguard as shown in this video however it doesn't stop the mud splatter up my back perhaps its because I went with different tyres not really sure.

      Same here, I haven't found a solution yet. Either something near the top that won't get in the way but also not that effective or something to mount on the plastic protectors that move with the wheel maybe?

      Am currently looking at having some custom made found a UK classic motorcycle shop that will make them in any size you want then it would just be a case of sorting out mounting them ive thought about replacing the plastic shields with metal and could then use these to mount a front mudguard to

    I wish i could do that in the states. However unfortunatly with out a MSO I cant get my bike street legal..It sucks, I am really thinking about getting a Zero FXS and just use my bike build for fun at EV meetups or somthing! They were 2nd hand off ebay so not really, put in 'sur ron brake system' and see if there's anything on there at the moment. I believe you can get the whole kit fron SurRon directly but it was much more expensive.

      @EverythingEbikeChannel  Před 2 lety

      Still on a sabvoton as it works fine once it's had a moment to think when starting up! I can't face having to redesign all the mounts for a different model but also don't want to waste more money on another sabvoton.

      I had it once when turning the bike on with the headlight on and the buck converter caused a large inrush, but otherwise no. I'm not sure how it would get triggered when riding as the controller should regulate the current before it realises it's over the set limit?

    @firstman9273 Před 2 lety

    I can't see the manual talking about brake fluid level? Except Pg 154 "reason for failure indicated service efficiency is less than required." Surely if it is not indicated it cannot fail? I mean drum pad brakes are not indicated.
    Also the external projections section, I don't see why only the ball ends of clutch levers of that section applies when everything else is apparently not applied. I say apparently not applied because the section does not start with "This inspection applies to all vehicles with the exception of mopeds fitted with non retractable pedals". Instead that paragraph of optionality comes after a paragraph about foot positions. Could it only relate to the foot position requirements? But if it was only to be optional in relation to the foot positions I would expect it to be in the same paragraph. Did you ask your email contact about these points? BTW what is your max range, Motor hub power and battery size?

    • @EverythingEbikeChannel
      @EverythingEbikeChannel  Před 2 lety +1

      On page 133 it talks about 'Check that hydraulic system reservoirs are so designed and constructed that the level of the reserve fluid can be easily checked' which is where I got the fluid level bit from. As to the ball ends, I emailed DVSA directly as I wasn't sure either and they said external projections apply to all vehicles, but then the manual also says not if you have pedals🤔. I know that's what other people have done and I'm playing it on the safe side so will see if they mention anything when it goes it for test.

    Look into using motorcycle levers with adaptors to fit the bicycle hose. Check the ebike nut channel, he has a good video on how to do this. This should help clear any obstacles with regard to brake levers testing.

      I saw his vid actually, but only after I'd done my setup. Will bear in mind if I need a different way of doing the brakes

  • @lezbriddon
    @lezbriddon Před 2 lety +1

    audible tell tales for indicators were stopped in the 80's after only a few years of use as it (supposebly) caused confusion (in rare circumstances if ever) at pelican crossings where it was decided that an approaching motorcycle beeping could confuse a blind person into stepping out into a road full of traffic. dvla guy obviously not old enough to remember such things. it also could be urban myth stuck in tha back of my mind, dvla often introduce things then pull them, like dim dip headlights activated by sidelights which caused issues with halogen bulbs....
    have you spotted the little funny in the msva about indicators, they /must/, it says must, be tested with the bike powered up and at 50% throttle, now i dont know how fast an msva tester can run....page 42, first paragraph of section 6)(of the 207 page pdf)

    • @EverythingEbikeChannel
      @EverythingEbikeChannel  Před 2 lety

      Yes I did notice the 50% throttle bit, I don't get it but wondered if it's to do with the 12v battery dipping under load?

    • @lezbriddon
      @lezbriddon Před rokem

      @@EverythingEbikeChannel yup voltage dip is an issue on old 50cc mopeds with a tiny 2ah lead acid battery so 50% throttle was used to bring the voltage up from the generator, being pre alternator bikes.

    Aw man, I'm definitely not a fan of registering these bikes there's a few guys that have done it and I'm of the opinion that we should be flying about in the grey area for as long as possible... dunno man if you use it after you register it then fair play 🤷‍♂️ but I'll be riding dirty until forced otherwise 🤪 just opens the door to being pulled and definitely gives em more rights to hit your pockets with fines

    yeah if only brake levers for bikes could be bought that apply to EU regulations. i have spent weeks looking for them that have a fluid level indicator with switches and ball end levers. they just do not exist in the world. i went direct to SurRon to ask if i could just buy the master cylinders and levers but they will not sell you them. the only other legal ones were the Tektro HD-E710 but sadly they do not make them anymore and just cant get hold of them.
    we have 2x bikes we want to make legal but they are doing everything they can to prevent it. no money in being legal!

    • @lezbriddon
      @lezbriddon Před 2 lety

      cable driven disk brakes are good to 30-40mph, they will outbreak your rear tyre traction.... you can also 'move' the master cylinder to the brake caliper and have hybrid cable operated hydraulic brakes and they will never notice. (thats what i have bought) - msva says it must be possible to check fluids level with bikes supplied tool kit, most brakes have a hex head filling level screw, so tape an allen key to the bike and boom you can check the level.....(thats my current interpretation of the docs
      )

    • @EverythingEbikeChannel
      @EverythingEbikeChannel  Před 2 lety

      I'll ask them about using the filling port as a fluid checker when I get it tested, that would allow a lot more ebike brakes to be used.
