  • In this episode of our Rimworld Biotech challenge in the Tropical Rainforest, we have our first baby and take on some demanding royal guests.

    In this episode of Rimworld Biotech, we continue our 500% Randy Random run in the tropical rainforest. With the immediate survival of the Believers of Boyo secured, we take another stab at charity and welcome a royal baron and his entourage as guests in the jungle colony of Red Chapel. While the visitors get acquainted with our moderate way of living, Skwiggs gives birth to the first child in the colony: Ellie! The newborn and her mother are the first to move into the new mountain base, while the rest of the colony tries their best to keep the guests happy.

    The tropical rainforest is one of Rimworld’s more challenging biomes: A warm, wet jungle with choking overgrowth, survival in the tropical rainforest biome will not be easy. Wild predators and frequent diseases will make life difficult for our colonists, who will struggle to find free land to build on. Additionally, we are settling on a tile featuring mountainous terrain, extensive cave networks and a unique river that runs halfway underground.
    We are continuing this playthrough from a Naked Brutality scenario in Rimworld Ideology that eventually evolved into a small tribal colony in the cold bog. After obtaining the first part of the archonexus map, we select five colonists for the quest to find the next piece, so we are starting with some items and equipment. Nonetheless, we are settling on a fresh new tile in the middle of the rainforest and have to start a new base from scratch to survive the dangers of the jungle on Randy Random "Losing is fun difficulty" with the threat scale cranked up to 500%.
    With the Rimworld Biotech DLC, we also see the introduction of children and reproduction, lots of mechanoid additions, and an extensive gene system that allows the modification of our pawns on the genetic level. Additionally, we see skill teaching, pollution and vampires (or Sanguaphages) introduced to Rimworld, as well as several new races, quests and objects.
    Rimworld is a Sci-Fi colony builder simulation game focused on managing a small group of survivors with the goal of eventually building a space ship to escape the planet. Rimworld is developed and published by Ludeon Studios. After a successful Kickstarter campaign, the game went through several Alpha and Beta versions before seeing the release of the Rimworld 1.0 version in October 2018.

      Put a grow zone over the ambrosia sprout and forbid sowing (so it doesn't get cut down). Your farmer will harvest them once they're ready.

      That's the kind of mistake I'd make. I once captured an enemy pawn with really promising stats after a battle, not noticing for some time that I had blown off all four of their limbs.

    The field hand might be best. You are NOT lacking in killing power, but with cocoa trees, healroot and rice that's a good variety of crops you'll need to attend to and someone who's really good at that might be wise to have.

      I disagree, the pawns do not have an reasonable medical setup to install either hand. The fact that the bow is Masterwork and that the group does not have a telescope already makes it the more logical option, as there is only benefits and no risks. (by the way, a Masterwork Weapon of most any type will out perform almost all normal to good quality weapons DPS wise)

    Have you considered getting the Hospitality mod? It would fit in with the theme of boyo. It allows guests to stay, giving people a refuge from the harsh jungle

      It might disable achievements and it's a gameplay mod, so it's not compatible with the Vanilla completionist rules, though of course it's a good mod to use otherwise

      Had one playthrough where i build a mountainbase in desertbiome, managed to get it cooled* below -17°C. So in theory it is possible but it's bloody expensive and needs a lot of power

    Pete, I know this series just started, but I'd love in the future all of your future playthroughs (win or lose) will always be on this save file. a constantly expanded world of tribes you made and curated. I keep thinking about last episode how a colonist you raised and cared for visited the tribe randomly. It adds such a tiny detail that everyone can pick up on. Its awesome and Id love to see that more, especially if it had been from a tribe several series before

    1:59 Without Tree Connection, you only get them at half Speed and I do no think you get the as Ritual Rewards. So even if you use them, it would be a much lower degree.
    You still can use them for Nostalgia purposes.
    2:23 So, "Light's out"?
    12:09 You should have built those entrances then. At least the front door. That would have allowed you to use the cooling and avoid some heating issues.
    About your questions:
    - Yes to the peace negotiations.
    - Maybe to lending a colonist. Again, the Empire does not need "charity". They are not poor people in need of charity. They are the rich people that should _give_ charity.
    - The Field hand is probably the most useful. It would allow your one planter to be the only planter for a while longer.

    Hey Pete, glad to see you doing better. I wanted to make sure that you have some idea of how the child rearing mechanics work in the Biotech expansion. I know that basically all of your Rimworld series put a heavy efference on roleplay, but I just want to give Ellie her best shot at being not a drain on the group. It's not too difficult to manage and there's a lot of RP moments involve so no worries! Just what ever you do, don't have them fight. They will lose limbs/die so quick, even in social fights.
    For what it's worth, I vote in favor of the Masterwork Bow and telescope. The telescope is important for both pawn recreation and child rearing; and the bow is a significant up grade in firepower. The problem with the field hand is that the colony doesn't have the medical capital to install it. They might have a decent doctor, but the need a properly clean room, decent light, and a Good or better bed. The Bow and telescope only have benefits and no potential costs. Plus, sacrificing a hand for the betterment on the colony would be good RP, but losing a hand for nothing is more RP from the Cult of Jinx.
    As for the other quests, you should do them. Stock pile enough food for 30+ days and send Light to help harvest those fields. Take those donkeys as a sign of providence to meet your enemies in peace. Be careful of those infestations, we don't want Ellie to be eaten now do we?

    The negotiations sound really good.
    Givng a colonist for 29 days is a big sacrifice, and if a colonist feels a specialist need to repent or something , then they might wanna pick it.
    And a field hand upgrade sounds really good to grab early and have our crop production boosted.

      But it doesnt take 29 days tho? The negotiations will go quickly, if not instantly, after the chosen pawn arrives to the destination. So it`s only a time to move to the negotiations place and back again.

      The negotiations can wait. The positive relations will fade over time, causing them to be hostile again by the time the colony has enough wealth for the map piece

    I love how you're just packing all of the guests in the nice room as if you were that automatic voice in Portal 2:
    "This is art. You will here a buzzer. When you hear the buzzer, stare at the art. [BEEP] You should now feel revigorated."
    Edit: Btw, in my experience, the negociations have an invisible time limit. If you wait for too long, the tribe gets bored or something, and they give up on the talks. It takes a while though, but I lost an opportunity like that.

      If you have not watched Pete's previous RImworld series, I can highly recommend them. The Cold Bog series is the precusor to this series, but the first two series are a good watch. You get to meat Cambiar for the first time.

    I like the idea of a small hospitality base outside of the mountain, which houses all guests in a nicer environment. Could have guest barracks, royal rooms, dining area and what ever. Leaving the colonists inside the less nicer mountain.

    Regarding the quests:
    1. Doing the peace talks is a must, imo. These give 6000XP for social and since it is also necessary to get that goodwill, you should do it some way or another. They run out after some time though as well (I had that happen to me once) even though there is no timer on them.
    2. Hold on for accepting that lending out of a colonist. If a new person is joining the colony in the meantime, have them go there. Otherwise the 20 days are a bit heavy.
    3. For the last quest, I would personally pick the telescope reward, since it is giving recreational variety. Field hands are awesome too though if you want one of your colonists to be the dedicated farmer. If you have several do agricultural work as a tagteam I dont think one having a fieldhand is that useful but I might be wrong about that.

    For the EMP quest, the field hand reward gets my vote--having someone able to gather crops fast is really good.
    I also think you should do the negotiations quest, though I wouldn't send a colonist to the Empire for 20 days. Helping is one thing, but cutting off a finger from the helping hand (albeit temporarily) will greatly reduce your ability to help others in the future. Perhaps that is a quest for the future when you can spare more labor.

    Donkeys are not only good pack animals, they breed fairly quickly and produce a bunch of meat - not as much as horses, but you can pretty easily keep a colony fed off of just a couple of consistently-pregnant females, and they can be fed for free by allowing them to graze.

    Gonna be tricky to give up one colonist for that time, but you could probably handle surviving 'till then... unless Randy truly attacks.
    Definitely keep the donkeys, they're the Boyo-send to the colony, humble animals to help in need. And they can support themselves too.
    Blind seer Light using the Force to shoot and Wyatt laying out the boorish courtier were the highlights. But so is the ultra-complicated Skwiggs personal life.
    Great work keeping the guests happy for the quest, and that's some awesome fanart this time around, glad the pigchild moment got immortalized like that.

    I do think keeping the donkeys around at least for a while would be a good idea, for the same reason as you mentioned (caravans). That seems like a very useful thing to have.

    I'd go for the telescope.
    Nothing is more interesting & educational for children then the stars.
    As plus it is another activity for the pawns to not get bored.
    And a masterwork bow is at worst a real good trade good, but also a pretty decent weapon early on, doubly so as hunting weapon.

    Easily the field hand. Those are incredibly strong. Power claws, meanwhile, are a marginally useful thing - they barely ever fire if your melee pawn has a weapon, and they're not that strong a melee weapon anyways.

    I feel that as simple, hardy, hard-working animals, Donkeys fit pretty well with the self-sacrificing theme being built up in the colony: They work hard and ask for little in return.

    i like the idea of caravan donkeys, a nice humble animal for our guilty colonists. also i think you should go with the field hand, there will be plenty of crops to harvest with the coco trees and that will speed it up a lot!

    I am in favor of making peace with the tribes, but waiting until the housing/food situation feels more secure; "Laborer Lending" is not worth it at this few of colonists; and the field hand seems like the best reward for the EMI Field quest.

    Not sure if someone already commented it, but be careful about delaying the "peace talks" reunion with the tribals.
    Those quests actually do expire if you ignore them for too long (not sure exactly how long, but I had it expire in some of my runs).

    Donkeys are awesome. If you want to tango with elephants as caravan animals, maybe the ranger meme would be something? Animal specialists have a much higher tame chance and elephants are damn hard to tame. Level 10 only gives you a chance but it takes a lot of attempts. Going the ranger route might be something fun to see too for once. Would be a fitting way of acquiring protein. And maybe also a good change of trade goods. I like to trade flake too but animals that breed can be great too. Selling only grown up males is a good strategy for that. Making a kibble reserve for toxic fallouts from non-animals remains could be some sort of cradle to cradle justification for not using flames as "wastedisposal" for once.

    I feel the field hand would be the best fit. Wyatt is already an excellent fighter, so this could help with harvesting the chocolate, so it might be prudent to accept and install it beforehand to maximize the yield.

IMO you should always have some glitterworld medicine stockpiled in the rainforest just incase of the worst case scenario. As for the other quest i do agree that a field hand would be very useful, especially with how strong our fighters are. I will mention however that we are having very frequent mental breaks and a telescope would help with that, so you should at least consider it.

    Field hand, I don't like the Power claw very much, first as someone else said you don't need more firepower and second the Field hand is better because it makes planting soooo much faster and the Power claw makes your pawn slow.

    Having only one entrance into the base, being a bridge, is extremely defensible.
    Every entrance is a weakness. You could always leave a thin wall as an emergency escape.

    Hi Pete. Just want to say, the faster pace is great. Not too much that it dilutes the storytelling or takes away from your charm. I would say to send a labourer for the quest. It might be a bit unfair if you look at the rewards. But that fits nicely in with the theme of Boyo feeling guilty and making sacrifices to repent. I'd choose the field hand for the sake of better farming. We are going to need a lot of food for charity

    Definitely take the field hand. Combat shouldnt be a major issue for a while, and the ability to more quickly perform daily tasks leaves more time to prepare for future combat.

    One suggestion, you could swap Light's and Sqwiggs' weapons so that blind man light has a closer ranged weapon so when a raid comes he has a chance to hit someone, and sqwiggs obviously gets the assault rifle because she definitely shoots better than light 😁

    I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but if you go into a baby's feeding tab & set a character to "urgent," that person will feed them regardless of their work allowances. That would require baby food, but maybe it could help Took form a relationship with his child?

    For the donkeys, Jesus himself walked everywhere, and the only time he was ever riding on an Animal, was the one snd only time that he got on a donkey. SO I think that keeping them permanently might be a fitting idea

    I don't think refusing that Empire's quest with the Guilty meme has any drawbacks. Considering that you will be losing a precious colonist for 20 whole days, editing the game's files to add something like a -10 mood boost in case you refuse would be interesting and in line with their beliefs. That way both options have significant consequences

    I'm definitely feeling like the field hand is the way to go for that quest, Wyatt is already crazy strong in melee combat so the claw seems a bit unnessesary.
