    Objectives
    - The Goal of ACT
    - What is Mindfulness?
    - How Does ACT Differ from Other Mindfulness-based Approaches?
    - What is Unique to Act?
    - Destructive Normality
    - Experiential Avoidance
    - Therapeutic Interventions
    - Confronting the Agenda
    - Control is the Problem, Not the Solution
    - Six Core Principles of ACT
    ACT Acronym
    - Accept your reactions and be present
    - Choose a valued direction
    - Take action
    Overview
    - ACT is based on relational frame theory (RFT)
    - a psychological theory of human language.
    - developed largely through the efforts of Steven C. Hayes of University of Nevada, Reno and Dermot Barnes-Holmes of National University of Ireland, Maynooth.
    Overview
    - Relational frame theory argues that the building block of thought is the ability to create links between things and create schema that help people anticipate the future.
    - Stoplights
    - Lightning and Heat Lightning
    - Pain
    - Distress
    - Addictive behaviors
    - Certain behaviors in other people
    Overview
    - Contextualists understand the complexity and richness of a whole event and subsequent emotional and behavioral reactions through appreciation of the uniqueness of its participants and features of each situation.
    - Large movements
    - Substance use
    - Functional contextualism emphasizes:
    - We learn how to describe and anticipate through experiences
    - We must focus on changeable variables in the context to create general rules to predict and influence psychological events such as thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
    The Goal of ACT
    - The goal of ACT is to create a rich and meaningful life, while accepting the pain that inevitably goes with it.
    - Who is important?
    - What is important to me? (Values, things, experiences)
    - How can I move toward those goals?
    - “ACT” is a good abbreviation, because this therapy is about acting based on our deepest values and in which we are fully present and engaged.
    Summary
    - The goal of ACT is to create a rich and meaningful life, while accepting the pain that inevitably goes with it
    - Being aware and present in the moment
    - Destructive Normality the psychological processes of a normal human mind are often destructive, and create psychological suffering. “This is depressing. I am helpless”
    - Actions designed to avoid the experience in the present
    - Therapeutic Interventions focus around two main processes:
    - Developing acceptance of unwanted private experiences which are out of personal control.
    - Commitment and action toward living a valued life.
    - Confronting the Agenda (to eliminate distress)
    - Explore sources of distress
    - Explore prior attempts at removing distress
    - Explore effectiveness
    - In the short and long term
    - Specific to the problem and other areas of life
    - Six Core Principles of ACT
    - Diffusion- Separate self from feelings/experience
    - Acceptance-Accept what is
    - Contact with the present moment- Mindfulness
    - The Observing Self- Fly on the wall
    - Values Identification
    - Committed Action

ACT sounds like an amazing therapy. After having been a 12 step member for years it sounds opposite of what I learned in meetings/12step. Addiction/Alcoholism is seen as one big pathology and the symptoms/cravings are seen as part of that pathology. Part of who you are. Part of your "illness". If you have a craving some would take that to mean you aren't working the program correctly. I guess thats what happens when the "treatment" was developed in the 1930s and then carried by people with no formal training in addiction and how it actually works. ;-)

    • @DocSnipes
      @DocSnipes  Před 3 lety +6

IMHO working the program correctly does not mean never experiencing cravings, it means being able to notice and address them in a healthier way when they are triggered. Recovery is a physical, emotional, mental, environment and spiritual process. PAWS is a perfect example of how you can be working the program "correctly" and still experience cravings. I work toward accepting that I cannot "reprogram" every trigger or the change the speed at which my brain and body heal. Having the courage to use the wisdom I have gained to keep making the choices that help me move toward my rich and meaningful life. In ACT we would focus on noticing the craving nonjudgmentally, de-fusing from it and deciding on the best way to handle it from an objective (wise mind) stance.

I"m super curious. What if the valued direction that a person identifies is occasional heroin use? Can ACT be used to support moderation?

    • @DocSnipes
      @DocSnipes  Před 4 měsíci

      Thanks for watching the video.
Here’s how you can start Addressing Occasional Heroin Use with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT):
      * Clarify Values: ACT starts with clarifying what is truly important and meaningful to you-your values. Reflect on how heroin use aligns or conflicts with these values. This can help you make choices that lead to a more fulfilling life.
      * Acceptance of Thoughts and Feelings: Learn to accept uncomfortable thoughts and feelings without trying to eliminate them or act on them. This can be particularly important when experiencing cravings or urges to use heroin.
      * Mindfulness: Develop mindfulness skills to help you stay present and aware of your experiences without judgment. This can help you recognize the urge to use heroin without automatically acting on it.
      * Committed Action: Make a commitment to take actions that are in line with your values, even when it's difficult. This might mean seeking help, changing your environment, or engaging in activities that are incompatible with heroin use.
      * Understanding the Risks: It's important to recognize that heroin is a highly addictive substance with significant risks, including overdose and the potential for escalating use. ACT can support harm reduction, but moderation in heroin use is inherently risky.
      * Seek Professional Support: If you're considering using ACT to address heroin use, it's crucial to work with a healthcare professional. They can provide guidance tailored to your specific situation and help you assess the risks and benefits of different approaches.
      * Harm Reduction Approach: While ACT does not explicitly promote substance use, it can be part of a harm reduction strategy. This involves acknowledging the risks and working towards reducing them, rather than focusing solely on abstinence.
      * Focus on Overall Well-being: Use ACT to focus on enhancing your overall well-being and quality of life, rather than just managing substance use. This broader perspective can lead to more sustainable changes.
It's essential to approach the idea of moderation in heroin use with caution due to the high potential for addiction and overdose. ACT can be a valuable tool in supporting individuals to live in accordance with their values and to make healthier choices, but it should be used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that considers all the risks associated with opioid use.

I'm actually not a heroin user but i am someone who knows that addiction is not a disease and that 9 out of 10 people outgrow problematic substance use without treatment and most do NOT choose abstinence. I'm seeing ACT offered in more and more rehabs, so wanted to ascertain if ACT practitioners are being honest and about the touted amt of agency that's in the model. As i suspected this is way more abt how to skillfully manipulate people than it is about empowering them. I will give you credit that you're manipulation skills are stellar. You could use that to actually help but chose control and subterfuge instead.
