American-Redne...
Replacing the head gasket and the impeller on this 1972 Johnson Outboard Model # 50ESL73R
Will it run? Tune in and give it a watch to see if this engine gets another life.
This is not an instructional or how to video, for entertainment purposes only.
I am not a mechanic, I am just a northern redneck that likes to take things apart to see how they tick and why they broke.
I've had mine since 1991. Still going strong.
Hell yeah brother I just picked up the same engine last month, it didn’t have spark so I changed a few things but nothing.. only thing left was for me to change the “timer base” coil under the flywheel and she sparked! I was that close to saying the hell with it. Can’t wait to try n fire her up next week, hope your 50 lasts you another good decade
Good to know, thanks bud!
Awesome video bro, loved it. Taught me alot about this motor!
That's a good motor I've got that same you, I haven't personally because it's a 1973 engine I was born September 1st 1973 but my engine looks just as good as that one does I just got a little problem with the stator plate I got to replace again
Great video man
Good job at lower end work, you will have piece of mind ,onthe water.....that broken piece won't migrate in cooling system. Possibly clogging thermostat!👍
I love the motor I got one 1988 they're good..
A 73 and an 88 are far from the same engine. Few parts, interchange
Hi, I just bought a 1973 Johnson 50hp. Can you tell me where the shift bolt is to remove the lower unit? Please
Thanks
No problem bud!
Why is the Cowl on backwards?
You did the lower unit water pump for no reason!!! Or didn't you, myself [ and I work on alot of old outboard engine. It's peace of mind. You wouldn't have none someone else change the water pump without removing. Also you didn't waste the money. You still have a new pump. I would replace the pump every 2 to 3 years anyway. You don't want to have to change out the head gasket again because of a bad water pump. Keep here running and don't forget to winterize her every year. Thanks for the time.
Where does a 72 50 hp weep out the water it pumps? I can't find it on mine
Hey brother having problems with 73 evinrude 50hp 2stoke outboard seems like its blowing fuses every 3 turns with the key can it be powerpack issue or bad key ignition set up it has new one the boat had no key at first
Blowing fuses means is it drawing too much amperage. I'm not a pro, but I would say it is at the starter. Starters use a lot of amps to turn the motor. Is your fuse big enough? Looking at my vehicles, they have 30 - 40 Amp fuses. If your fuses are big enough, maybe have your starter tested? If your starter is 48 years old, something in it might be dragging or shorting out. I don't think it has anything to do with the switch.
hey, minute 28, tan wire. Where can i get the overheat sensor?
MarineEngine.com
What's your top speed ? Great video !
Just me, 22 Knotts. Each additional person it dropped 2 Knotts. Not a speed boat but a fun little buggah.
well yes you got the torque sequence completely wrong. needs to be done in 3 stages as well not all at once and never use an impact unless just to screw them in with hardly any torque. did you resurface the block with a carbide scraper? head as well? temp sensors are about $55. not sure where you got $150 from unless you go to the 2 wire quickstart ones wich are NLA and not applicable here. compression on these should be over 140psi but good they are even. gauge might be reading low.
Lower the front of the boat
1973? It was probably done 10 times.
