    I've got a 1973 65hp Johnson. It was totally remanufactured in 2014. It runs absolutely BRAND NEW !! I love this little Motor. It's in great shape for it's age, But after watching your video, I think I'm gonna give it a Face Lift !! All it needs is New Paint work. Everything under the Cowling looks new. At $1000 in making it like new again, I can't buy a good 65hp for that !! I'll post some before and after pictures, Might even video the work !! Well worth the time !! Thanks and great job !!

    Very nice work looks like you did not miss a trick. I bought this exact same motor as NOS. The motor was new in the crate but was 5 years old stock that was auctioned off from a dealer that had gone bankrupt. i got a great deal for $1000.00 with controls. the motor turned out to be a lemon, in the first 100 hours a connecting rod bearings started to fail and punched a hole threw the crank case. i had the alum case welded installed new crank bearings and con rods rings and a quick hone. Well it lasted just over 145 hours and exactly the same thing went down again. i did one more rebuild and sold it for $1500.00 with just over 260 hours on the clock/motor. i told the guy that bought it the problems and repairs i had done with all bill's and service records .i never heard back from the guy and i would see the motor on a lund alum boat running around on the lake.i dont think he put many hours on thet motor every season so i think he got around 4 or 5 years before he had any problems show up. for me it was not a good motor as i could run up 100 hours in on season of good fishing

    I have the same motor that starts and runs nicely except for one issue: the carb adjustment screw only one located on the front of carb right above the intake hole (it’s a tiny flat screw). When this screw is turned out full turns from tight position, she starts first crank in cold mornings (her sweet spot). However, it gets lose/sometimes tighten after speeding perhaps from vibration. Question is: Is there supposed to be a retainer? Because I have looked online and all looks to be the same as mine just a screw. So confused.

    Hey j, I have the same engine. It has 100 psi on both cylinders but dies when put into gear, what was your method to tuning the two carbs?

    • @jeffsextratv
      @jeffsextratv  Před 8 lety

      A 100 psi seems a little low Nick, the engine in the video was honed and re-ringed and has over 140 psi of compression; this could be the cause of the stalling once a load is put on the engine. The reed valves could also be an issue, may require a good cleaning- but be careful. As for the carbs - if they haven't been completely rebuilt, do that and be sure the linkages are precisely adjusted. Hope that helps.

    I am working on a 1983 Johnson 115.I put it in gear and the prop will not move whether it is in forward or reverse. I went to check the lower unit oil and it is bone dry which makes me think maybe rust on the shaft is locking it up. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    • @jeffsextratv
      @jeffsextratv  Před 7 lety +1

      My guess would be your lower unit is either not allowing the forward/reverse gear to slide properly or the shaft is disconnected somewhere

    • @jeffsextratv
      @jeffsextratv  Před 8 lety

    • @ct1762
      @ct1762 Před 3 lety

      @@jeffsextratv no adjustable low speed needle valves on that motor. those plugs are before they made the plastic air silencers with the hole in the side to inject tuner and/or fogging oil, and way before electric primer with the schraeder valve. so those plugs are for injecting to each carb.

    • @55hillerby
      @55hillerby Před 2 lety

      RI Outboards...Yes those low speed needles can be adjusted but you have to make sure that the small plastic seats aren't brittle and broke as the needles seat into them.... There's also a red plastic piece that goes around the needles to keep the needles from moving when the engine runs and vibrates...Very important to check those white plastic needle seats as if they're damaged you can't get the engine to idle and run smoothly at low rpms...

    where did you end up finding parts?

    • @jeffsextratv
      @jeffsextratv  Před 7 lety

      Many parts were sourced from manufacturer's website as well as, www.boatpartstore.com, www.marineengine.com, www.ebay.com, www.craigslist.org, or where ever you can find them. If I was to do one again, which I plan to, I wouldn't do older than about 1984.

    Actually it looks like a 1973 , 72 was hydroelectric lower and had a yellow plug on wiring harness plus the cover would say 50th anniversary in front, and side plates would be white with black letters not black with white letters. So it looks like your a year off, 1973

      +George Wheeler The 1973 was slightly different than even the '72 and '74. Some parts can be difficult to find, the safety switch in the remote control is very hard to find, some what impossible. As long as the engine neutral safety switch (still available) is good and cables are adjusted properly you should be okay. Good luck with rebuild.

    Why did you not paint it the right color

    • @jeffsextratv
      @jeffsextratv  Před 8 lety +2

      If by "right" color you mean the original color? Well, baby-shit green is not that appealing; most colors from the '70's for that matter. The white and navy blue is just sharp, modern, and goes with nearly anything.
