1973 Johnson 50hp Outboard (Beautifully Restored)
Here it is folks, after 7 months of hard work and hard earned cash, this beauty is finally on the market. What began as a motor I ran on my boat five years ago is now a one of a kind fully rebuilt/restored 1973 Johnson 50 HP (Long Shaft) outboard. The first thing you will notice is the gleaming white paint job; this comes courtesy of countless hours completely stripping every part of the motor and refinishing it with Standox automotive grade paint. The color is a bright Chevrolet Summit White that can virtually match anything you put it on - a very classy color. The entire powerhead was rebuilt and refinished in a glorious navy blue paint job. The exhaust housing, driveshaft, water pump, and thermostat are all rebuilt or new as well. Furthermore, the gearcase has been completely revitalized which includes rebuilding the oil pump, shifter, and replacing all the seals and bearings. The fuel delivery system is refurbished also, giving you piece of mind this baby is ready to rock when you are. This motor is basically new, and there is probably only one like it in the world, a beautiful classic motor. Runs and shifts like new. This is a rarity of an outboard, truly one-of-a-kind. The price reflects the time, effort and money that went into this fine example of an outboard motor and still, the price may not be high enough. I plan on posting this motor on eBay if your interested. Have a stack of receipts. Now, here is a detailed list of what has been done to this gem of a motor.
Engine was rebuilt by honing the cylinders, fitting new rings, bearing, gaskets, and seals.
Engine was also completely stripped and painted navy blue with Standox paint.
The stator, timer-base, sensor coil, rectifier, power pack, coils, harness, and starter are all new.
Outboard stripped and professionally refinished with automotive grade paint.
Many trim parts were blasted and painted as well.
Carburetors were rebuilt from top to bottom.
A new Water pump assembly and thermostat were also installed.
New gaskets and seals everywhere you can think of.
Oil pump was rebuilt to ensure decades of worry free fun.
Gearcase has been overhauled by checking everything and replacing all seals, bearings, and bushings.
Remote control rebuilt and refinished, and will soon have a beautiful cover on it.
...and probably forgetting a few things.

Where can I order a good stator from
Does the exhaust relief port have a pee stream? Or does it just spit a few drops of water here and there?
Great job, at the moment I do the same project with Suzuki DT 15 1987 r.
Good restoration , never liked the 2 cylinder, loved the triple Johnson, EVINRUDE
Great job restoring the motor 👍
amazing motor like having a time machine
I have this motor. Why do they call it a powershift? Mine idols perfectly and goes about 1.5-1.8 mph at idol without missing a beat for hours. It will only go about 20mph at top speed with my 16.5’ sylvan deep v boat. It doesn’t miss and sputter and compression is good, not poor gas issue, correct prop, any ideas?
Dewalt planer
I have a 72 50hp Johnson The water does not come out of those two slots at the top and the motor is very hot when I put it in water to start in my driveway does that mean I need a water pump
Jest piękny!!!
If you still got that motor let me know.
How many turns do you have the idle jets turned out?
Great job! I have a 1974, I'm working on. How much did you post it for or sold it for?
Do you happen to remember what the bore size was on this? I see some books show it as 3.188 but my 1974 50esl74m mics out at 3.060
Just bought this same motor for 400 bucks with the controls and it runs great its crazy to see how long these old motors last
Bet it doesn’t run in the water
I have a Johnson 55hp , I rebuilt it and refinished it in Ferrari Red, it complements the 19ft boat refinished in metalflake Red, runs fast and perfect.
I have the same motor that starts and runs nicely except for one issue: the carb adjustment screw only one located on the front of carb right above the intake hole (it’s a tiny flat screw). When this screw is turned out full turns from tight position, she starts first crank in cold mornings (her sweet spot). However, it gets lose/sometimes tighten after speeding perhaps from vibration. Question is: Is there supposed to be a retainer? Because I have looked online and all looks to be the same as mine just a screw. So confused.
If I might ask. Where did you find parts? I have a 73 50hp as well and have looked for kits and found none that would work. And run pretty much a dead end right away looking for pistons and rings. Of course I do realize this was 6 years ago too.
Что то даже нет дыма
i got 110 psi on my compression test on both cylinders, which to me seems good enough. Last time I ran this engine was 4 years ago and it overheated without buzzer. It got hot. Currently no spark. The Chevrolet white looks great. Please help.
I'm restoring a 1973 50 Evinrude. Its the same except for the decals. Love to know the paint process and any other tips.
How much did you sell it for? We just got ourselves a 74 and restoring it. Trying to see what its worth but its not for sale lol
Amazing work!!!! Can I get what you sold this motor for?? I have the same motor
I only can say Amazon Amazon job.
Where'd you get the parts??
Love the little touch of paint the water exhaust silencer cover in that Johnson red. Really looks nice
Very nice but not sure if you should engage gear and rev engine without a prop on.
Fantastic!
just bought the same engine. question where does the water come out of ive always had newer engines and there was always a water stream to let u know the pump is working?
7:24 i have same one was gonna explain the location but yeah its on video
is this engine cover original ? 1973 ?
Could you help me with the wire color i need to hook up the same motor to a new ignition switch and cant find anything online i have red, yellow/gray, yellow, purple/yellow, purple/ white, purple,
Nice! Does anyone know if these have an overheat alarm on them? I have the same motor. Thanks
Yes there is a temp sensor in the upper left corner of the head water cover. If the engine gets too hot, the sensor expands and touches the crankcase which sets off the overheat horn in the forward control
I have the same one!! What was you final cost into the motor and what did you get out of it other than love of rebuilding?
I have the same engine but mine is a 74 is your top carburetor feed down to lower carburetor from the fuel pump and I have to tune the jet needles. Could you give me any pointers
Ola poderia me mandar uma foto da tampa do CDI? perdi a tampa do meu e nao sei o esquema eletrico de ligação do CDI
I just watched a video about Johnson outboards from a guy that told me I should turn my 1966 Johnson Metoer2 into a mailbox. Was he right? Did it cost more than a new one?
Hi. Looks great! What did it sell for. Im doing a 35 Evinrude in the same way. Thanks for the vid.
Nice! I can dream, but it takes work and persistence.thanks
What fuel ratio do you run?
Great job. Nice clean engine. I love Johnson, always have them. Now I have a 115hp Johnson and will never change it for the new ones.
At 3:57. There are 2 purple wires. What are those? Mine is missing those and won't start in the water. Only on land with water ears or bucket. ? Plz help!
Dsmn.... nice job
Actually it looks like a 1973 , 72 was hydroelectric lower and had a yellow plug on wiring harness plus the cover would say 50th anniversary in front, and side plates would be white with black letters not black with white letters. So it looks like your a year off, 1973
Where is the shift rod screw to take the lower unit off
It's under the bottom carburetor (port side). Have to remove the starter first.
Where did you buy that seal?!?! In desperate need! Please and thanks! Looks beautiful btw!
Wow! Great job on that outboard! Looks amazing.
Where did it pump water out at tryin to figure out if mine is pumping right
Turrible!
awesome work
