    • @HorseDe-luxe
      @HorseDe-luxe Před rokem +112

      Yeah, but effectively really only when such threats are directed against police officers (a sheriff, in this case), or politicians or big donators to the police force. I _wish_ they would treat other incidents with the same severity instead of letting so many just go unanswered and leaving so many people unprotected or actively endangered, but that's why the "acab" phrase is popular.
      Edit: I have a goldfish brain and forgot what title Chitwood had on the police force, despite hearing it in the video 10 minutes ago, whoops

      @VixeyTeh Před rokem +43

      Death threats anywhere have always been illegal. The difference is if it is clearly intended in a game or not.
      This guy threatened a police officer, who does not currently exist in the minecraft game. Therefore, the tag on of "in minecraft" is not applicable, and it can be assumed it was a real-world threat or, at the very least, inciting hate in the real world. In fact, because it is inciting hate, it will probably be elevated to a class 3 crime with 7 months jail time like all the other misdemeanours such as the graffiti and littering.

I feel like that is a very justifiable punishment for even "lighthearted" death threats online, considering how serious the repercussions may be when directed at vulnerable people, young people, mentally ill people, or anybody. But then it should REALLY be enforced, it should be made very clear to everyone online that this type of behavior results in consequences and shouldn't be tested. I don't honestly find it appropriate in any serious or joking context to say that to someone.
    Course, this all depends on whether they actually take it seriously or not. We'll have to see what comes of it, and if it also intrudes on the wrong people (obviously, teasing your friend shouldn't be a crime. Distincting between that might be difficult to outsiders)

      This is why hate crimes are bogus at the core, if someone does something illegal like threatening someone with violence you arrest them and they have appropriate charges brought against them. Hate crimes assume intent for the crime committed and are often used to apply extra punishment not equivalent to the crime committed. Harassment is harassment, the idea that certain types of verbal harassment should warrant felony charges that can permanently ruin someone's life isn't proportionate to the crime committed, which is arguably as big an injustice as the harassment itself, if not more so.
