Thanks for posting-it was very helpful! I thought I'd never get all of the old glass out, and I was stunned when the glass broke just right. I completely wrecked the plastic glazing strips and will have to find replacement, but the glass is now whole and I wouldn't have attempted doing it myself without your videos.

I put a slitor through the living room window yesterday when we were teaching some friends Hurling. I do stained glass, so I definitely want to fix the window myself, but wasn't sure about the glazing and construction of the aluminum windows. You answered all my questions. Thank You!

Neat! I have a similar looking window situation on my mobile home renovation. I'll put all this great real-world knowledge into practice soon! Thanks for making both videos.

Removing the vinyl from the outside then using a heat gun to remove glass is the way to do it. Been doing for 32 years

Don't take this the wrong way because I really appreciate you putting these videos together, its just the health & safety in me, I can't help it...especially with this low hanging fruit. When you started to pull that razor knife across the inside of the pane I was thinking how fortunate you were to not have slipped toward that shard of glass on the adjacent panel with the underside of your wrist angled toward it.

How do I find the glazing to buy? I can't find it in Home Depot's site typing in window glazing. Thanks for posting the right way! :)

before breaking all the glass it would be best if you have placed masking tape or packing tape on that broken glass so that as you break it, all those glasses pieces wouldn't fly off. And it won't scatter off!!!

I reassembled a broken glass window like a jigsaw puzzle after snow/ice slid and curling into the window off of the tin roof. I had the frame lying on the floor and assembled the glass puzzle inside of the frame to hold the pieces in place, then when I got it all back together I covered the glass with vinyl self adhesive shelf liner. It never fell apart again and lasted for wayyyyyyy more years than it should have been left broken even with 70+ mph winds.

    1. Plexiglass &/or window film
    2. Tip: cover the window in tape to 0revent too many pieces falling

Hey I have a rather dumb question but this is a real question. My home window broke and the contractor is claiming the same amount of money to replace annealed glass as tempered glass even though tempered glass is twice as expensive as annealed glass. He claims this is because annealed glass tends to break during installation and therefore costs more (in labor) to install even though the glass itself is so much cheaper. I am not that handy so can you help me please ? Is he BS-ing or telling the truth ? Is there any reason why it would cost just as much to install annealed glass as tempered glass ?
    Please help !!!

I have no idea how much contractors pay for their materials, but I would estimate that the labor to change out a pane is about the same regardless of the type of glass used. My glass panes were about $0.70 each, so I would expect that the price difference for a professional install wouldn’t vary based on material...unless you’re talking dual-panes glass.

Wrong tools for the job! Don't use a screwdriver and a hammer, my skin is curling! Flexible blade exacto knife to separate the glass from the panes. Clean everything, bead of silicone, replace glass, another bead of silicone on the inside replace pane, use 50% alcohol /50% water to clean up any extra silicone... Also tape glass first and remove it easier!

Shouldn't the neighborhood golf club or homeowner association pay for your glass repair? Thats pretty scary as It could be dangerous if it or the glass hits someone in the house.
