Very well done video. EMS had to break into my house one night when I was having a diabetic seizure. My nephew and I have been working on replacing the broken glass from the inside door. After watching this I feel much more confident that we can do it. Thank you.
Great video. Easy to follow. I like the shim measurement/notes tool. Going look into doing it my self. Thank You
Excellent clear and concise tutorial. I've been procrastinating repairing a bathroom window for about 5 years where the inner glass has cracked. I'd been holding off because I thought it wouldn't be easy. The steps you've shown prove that just about anyone can do this repair. Thank you! 👋🏻
Mind sharing where you bought the new unit from? Great vid!@@MT_Homes
Very helpful. Thanks for posting. This was the only video I found on how to repair this type of window.
The glass of my window is similarly held in place and I was wondering how to remove the glass if it gets broken normally by hailstones. Thanks to this video I now know how it is done - by using a scraper!
Looks simple. Thank you! Excellent video.
Great step by step video. I’ve been holding off on a project like this for my window. Gonna give it a try soon.
Sure appreciate you taking time to shared how to fix this type broken window.
Excellent work. You pay attention to detail and explained the steps well. Thanks for taking the time to do this
Thank you! This is the only reason I have a premium CZcams subscription. People as yourself have saved me from numerous trial and error frustrations. Not to mention the money I able to save performing home repairs I consider myself capable of undertaking.
Edit. I did hit the subscribe and notification bell.
Information is free to all and CZcams is the open internet meaning you don't have to pay for it.. unless your using their TV subscription service.
Very concise and descriptive. Thank you for making such a easy to understand video. I will be replacing my broken pane now since I have a clear understanding of what it will take.
Thank you. Awesome step by step process.
You did such as wonderful job Mr!
Absolutely amazing video. This is what CZcams is meant for!
Excellent video, my window is the same style as in you're video, thank you for the clear, step by step instructions. Now I know how to fix mine. Take care & be well 👍👍👍
Wow that's super easy. All the window "professionals" I called in my area said they can't replace the broken glass that they would have to replace the entire window.
I can understand maybe wanting to sell the windows you have in stock perhaps but as easy as that is i can't for the life of me understand why a pro wouldn't take that job and make some quick easy money in the process.
I may add this to the services I offer now since nobody around here does it and it's insanely easy.
Yea, it’s definitely quicker and easier just replacing the pane. Maybe they figure they can make more money replacing the entire window?
nice on the pain measurement. I usually wait a day for the silicone to dry -then use the knife to remove excess. Every time I mess with wet silicone it's all over the window and my hand.
THE MAN!!! time to get to work, thank you!!
Thanks for showing how to measure the glass correctly. I have a foggy kitchen window that I would like to replace. Now I know I can do it myself. Now I just need to find out who to go to locally or try ordering it on-line.
Thanks for the tips!
Excellent video.
Thanks! 👍👍😊
nice job!
This video is excellent. Just what I needed to make this repair. Thank you!
Mine problem is also the top pane. ;-(
Your videos helps a lot in my situation. Question though, my window frame/glass are similar to yours but with a wooden frame with wooden molding stops. Would you recommend silicone caulking or glazing putty/compound to set the glass into the frame? Currently, it appears that the manufacture used some sort of grey glazing putty. Should I clean up the putty from the frame and set the glass with silicone caulking/sealant instead? Where I live I cannot seem to get the right putty other than GAP 33 putty. Thanks for your advice and insight.
LOVELY THANK U MUCH!!
Thanks
When I try to find a local replacement glass business for the new sealed panes, what type of business do I search for? All I’ve found are new window installation companies. Thanks for the excellent tutorial, especially on the specific measurements!
I purchased mine from a local mom n pop auto glass shop. If no luck, you might call one of the local window installation companies and see if they know of a residential glass shop in the area.
Thank you for sharing !:-)
Thanks. If I inherited a gram sans spacers, what could you use as makeshift spacers?
Any chance you have a video about how to remove the muntins/mullions in a similar window? Or would you just leave that to the professionals? The other option would be to just do this same process, but order the glass without the grids? I'd love to just remove them since the rest of the window is working great.
exellent. thank you
Thanks for sharing. Any recommendations, on where to order an insert?
In my area, glass manufacturers won't sell to the public. They only sell to glass repair shops. I had to pay $660.installed, for one about twice the size as you bought for $75. It only took the guy about 15 minutes to actually put the replacement in. The first time he just came out to get the measurements.
Nice profit.
Where did you get the windows made
Amazing! Thank you for posting this tutorial. Would you please do a video showing how to remove the white grids between the glass?
Double pane glass like the one I’m working on is factory sealed. Yes I could probably break the seal and remove the grids but the window would be ruined. Condensation would gather between the panes fogging the window to where you couldn’t see out at all. Best way would be to order new panes like did but without the grids.
I understand, thank you! I have the same windows and I very much appreciate your video and excited to get to work. God bless you!
@@MT_Homes, I have one window that does what you are describing. Condensation between the panes. Guess I will be ordering a whole new window.
What do you call the metal at the edges of the glass?
Great video. Where do you get the new pane from, I am having a hard time locating
I have several glass shops locally that can order these in. The one I normally use is is an auto glass store.
What if you don't have a strip but looks like a plastick thin thing that covers that glass edge?
Where can someone buy the measured glass?
Isn’t the silicone harder to remove for the next person if it gets broken again vs the window glazing double sided tape , or is it better compared to sealing the window for air leaks ?
I doubt it’s much harder to remove than the glazing. I use silicone because I always have some on hand and it’s easier to get.
@@MT_Homes thanks . I broke an inside pane and have it taped up till winter is past . Great video
Great video. My luck had the top half of the window broken. The part that doesn't come out. Is it the same process to replace it? Also, would you consider that window a 34" x 52" roughly?
Thanks! Yes same process. Slightly more difficult. Still pretty easy. I don’t remember the dimensions but I’d say you’re close.
Mine just pop last night! I can't seem to find a place that supply the glass. Can you supply the information of where you order the glass.
nice
Very good video. Thank you. Where do I order this pane? Does Home Depot/Lowe's carry them? If not, what do I need to google? Local glass shops tell me they have to order them from a factory. Charging me $250 and 2 weeks lead time. Please help.
Thank you! I order mine from a local auto glass shop. Price has went up since I made the video. Last one I did was $135. 10-14 days lead time is normal.
Yea,I was going to say goddarn!!! $135!!? That’s a little stiff brother
What are those slides called that you began removing at 1:30? I've been looking for replacements and I can't even find them since I don't know what they are actually called.
I’m not sure. It’s the trim that holds the glass pane in place. Glass pane retainers, or glass pane trim, maybe? I kind of doubt you could buy just those pieces though. Best bet would be to get name and model/serial number of the window and call the manufacturer.
Where to buy??
What type of silicone? Part number? Thanks
I like GE clear silicone from Lowe’s (SKU 47970) or White Lightning silicone from Menards (SKU 5634331) Any 100% silicone will do the job, really.
I have the same type of windows, but mine don't have the "strips" that hold the glass in place, they're solid all the way across and join together with 45°s at the corners. A few of the windows in my house have broken seals,, in-between the panes of glass, and are foggy. Can you show me how to disassemble my style...pretty please????
Did you check both the inside and the outside very carefully? The strips can be on either side and will look like they’re one piece until you look very closely and pry on them a bit. Some strips are cut on a 45 at the corners instead of square like mine. Not saying it’s not possible but I have yet to see a vinyl window without those strips.
Do you have to replace both panes if only one side is cracked?
Yes. The 2 panels are sealed together with an argon gas between them to prevent fogging/ condensation.
if just the outside glass is broken do I need to change both?
Yes. The glass panes are sealed together at the glass factory with argon gas between them. If you only replace one side you would get condensation and fogging between the panes.
Going to sound stupid but is replacing the top section the same? I dont know if mine are movable at the top portion like. The bottom is. My windows are from the early 80s.
Any vinyl window I’ve done the top section is the same process as the bottom. Only difference is if the top sash is not removable (single hung) then it will have to be replaced while in the window and not on sawhorses like I did. Also sometimes the strips that hold the glass in will be on the outside.
@@MT_Homes I see, I guess I'll have to climb the ladder anyways then, I couldn't remove it from out of the frame.
Just one question can't I just buy that whole top frame to replace instead of removing the broken glass
Possibly.
You would have to contact window manufacturer or retailer. But that is usually quite a bit more expensive. Most windows have a label in frame somewhere and/or info etched in lower corner of glass.
So what if the window is Low E? Can you still replace the glass yourself?
Why not measure the width and length first then remove the broken glass and accurately measure thickness with a micrometer. You could replace the broken glass temporarily with a piece of timber or other type of sheeting.
How much would you charge for labor to do this?
I’ve only done it on my own houses so not sure. It requires 2 trips so probably a couple hundred.
Can I buy the part that slides up
You would have to contact your window manufacturer for that. Usually the name of the manufacturer and model of window is etched into one of the lower corners of the glass.
1000
What if it's the top part of the window?
Same process. Just has to be done in place if the top part is not removable (single hung window)
Lie saver
Huh why not just replace that top glass? You’re wasting money you literally could’ve fixed it for 20$
Wrong.
The panes are sealed together with a special gas between them. If I break that seal, the window will fog up between the glass panes and cause condensation.
This was the best video I’ve found about this process!
