- The legend of Candyman continues in Nia DaCosta's modern reboot. Is this the follow-up that the classic original deserves or is this yet another disappointing sequel?

Hey man. Hope you’re recovering from the big C.
Did that last night 👍
Watch the original Candyman (1992), and it's better than Candyman (2021) remake, okay?
U should do a spoiler review about this.
Honestly the way they used Tony Todd worked very well for me, but I definitely would have liked more of him.
The final scene made me leave with a smile on my face.
Me too
The original Candyman is back. It all comes full circle.
@@derrellarthur3114 “tell no one because it spoils the movie for people who haven’t yet seen it as that’s a really douche thing to do” - Tony Todd candyman 2021
movie was terrible
@@sheltonchang9220 agreed. Apparently people judge cinema by 4 second cameos nowadays. That's why movies suck.
I’m about to see Candyman in one hour but I thought we all knew that Anthony was that baby from the trailer. They used Vanessa Williams who was in the original and the moment I saw her, I was like “oh this is about the baby from the original.”
Yeah they weren't hiding it at all
@@CodyLeachYT I hope this isn’t a case of we get the whole movie in the trailer, but loved your review and it has me even more excited even with what sounds like very reasonable pitfalls you pointed out.
Exactly.
The 1st one still the best. Honestly I was disappointed with this new one.
POSITIVES
1) great performances 2) Loved the bogeyman approached to the Candyman character. 3) The bathroom scene where the teenage girls get slaughtered was awesome. 4) The last 5 minutes were awesome as well.
NEGATIVES.
1) The pacing was slow and seemed to drag on until the 3rd act. 2) SPOILER ALERT: I hated who there turned out to be not just one Candyman but a bunch of Candyman spirits... WTF? Tony Todd IS Candyman. Until he dies there is no other. 3) What was up with Anthony McCab and the bee sting consuming his whole body? I didn't really get that.
Wow your thoughts are EXACTLY like mine. Loved the movie but wish we had like 20 more minutes to flesh it out a bit.
Don’t worry, Candyman the second part is going to have the original character in more scenes
I was a Lil disappointed myself just not as good as I thought it would be but it's the 2nd best in the franchise.
I enjoyed the stick figure storytelling and opening and ending credits. Score was great. Agreed on most everything you said Cody except I thought the way they got Tony Todd in was well done and didn't over do it. We need to move away from these icons or else we wont ever get new ones.
Are we gonna just ignore how awesome his background is?
This was a good sequel. The first one had some sort of magic I can't describe, though. The music, the voices (especially Tony Todd's), the set design. Everything.
I enjoyed it overall, but they definitely cut some important scenes out. You can see certain missing scenes in the trailers, one of which I believe is a ghost of Helen. Anyway, good movie, great ideas, but Todd was way underused. They must have known fans really wanted to see more of him. The new candyman character lacks Todd's presence and voice. Great review 👍
Todd was underused?! He was in 5 seconds of the movie. He was barely even there lol
Finally we get your review for JORDAN PEELE'S Candyman!
Lol we gotta remember it’s Nia Acosta’s Candyman🙏🏾 she directed & co-wrote it
The fact nia Acosta made a good movie
@@cyeroyal2788 it's Nia Acosta who directed it
@@juanthompson8016 Oh ok I didn't know
@@cyeroyal2788 Did you even watch this video???
Candyman 1992 - 4.5 stars, Candyman 2021 2.5 stars. If this was supposed to be psychological thriller, then yes good job. As a horror film, I was not scared at all. I got more jump scares from watching Fatal Attraction. People literally were falling asleep in the theater.
Agree. The theater I watched Candyman (2021) in was dead quiet. Not laughing or shrieking at all. Numerous people got up and walked out halfway through. I don’t blame them lol
I agree as well, I honestly hated this movie. Just watched it last night.. oh man! I do understand what the Writer/Director was going for,, but they do realize the story of Candyman was not only successful due to the well told story, but also the menacing, great performance of Tony Todd. The guy that played Candyman was Horrible. I am much more scared of the Kardashians then this Candyman. Candyman never needed to be a series. The original is a masterpiece as is.
.... I felt like with it's tone, and long static shots and faraway closeups, I feel like the director was definitely emulating, an actual good horror film with good twists and turns and phenomenal atmosphere, Alan Parker's brillant ANGEL HEART.
FINALLY, someone who actually gets this film, even with all of its flaws and rushed third act. I think your point with Anthony not being questioned by authorities or even the immediate people around him is very strong. If the people around him started to blame him for the murders, and eventually turn on him, that could have been a more organic way of turning Anthony into the new Candyman, having in a sense history repeating itself right there on the same grounds where Daniel Robitaille was murdered.
You're great at building up the tension leading to your opinion and over all impression of the film. Really enjoy your reviews, Cody!
Thank you Cody, your the only review I trust when it comes to Candyman. Can't wait to see it.
It’s not very good…
@@xipetotek8216 actually it was and Cody's review was hella accurate too
@@xipetotek8216 lol ratio
The film is a direct sequel to the original Candyman (1992), ignoring the events of the sequels that followed. This same motion was first used in Halloween (2018), which was the direct sequel to Halloween (1978) and also ignored the events of the subsequent sequels to the original.
The opening credits of the original Candyman featured moving footage of Chicago filmed from above. In this version the credits featured moving footage of the city filmed from below.
LaKeith Stanfield was considered for the role of Anthony McCoy, but he turned it down for Judas and the Black Messiah (2021).
The opening company cards before the film begins are all backwards, as if they were being looked at through a mirror.
The first Candyman film to have a Black protagonist.
The film reuses the same foley sound of the crying baby from the original film.
First Candyman film without the involvement of Clive Barker.
First film in the series to feature openly gay characters, and an interracial gay couple. Creator Clive Barker is openly gay himself and was at one point in his life with photographer David Armstrong.
Tony Todd's fourth time playing Candyman. Todd was digitally de-aged for his appearance.
Running at just 91 minutes (1 hour and 31 minutes), this is the shortest Candyman film to be released
Hey Cody!
Love ur reviews even if I don’t actually see the films haha
Would you recommend the candy man
films overall? I haven’t seen any of them.
I haven’t watched any of ur other reviews I just checked this one out cuz I knew it was ur most anticipated for this year.
Keep doing what ur doing man 👍🤘
Cool review you’re making me so excited to watch it Saturday night in theaters ! 😭 I’m going in with positive expectations
Share pretty much the exact same reactions as you did. I think this would benefit A LOT from something like an Extended Cut, fingers crossed there is extra material that got removed.
it´s obviously missing at least 20% of the scenes. The script and rithm can´t be this bad. It must be missing like 20 mins before laundry guy turns into the joker.
Awesome man, I always look forward to your reviews. I also thought it would focus more on him being the baby from the OG movie.
Great review and keep up the great work on the channel!!!
I agree with every point you've made in your review. However, the film worked a little less for me for two main reasons:
1. I was never invested in the characters, despite all the acting being great.
2. The fast pace of the film, combined with the expansions to the lore, made for no sustained tension. The film had a lot of creepy potential with this new Candyman and the use of mirrors, but I never felt any suspense after the first "scare" scene.
The original Candyman has an unnerving atmosphere throughout and still gives me the creeps to this day.
I was fine till the last 15 minutes was a bit like hol up a second…
Not entirely sure it actually makes sense when compared to the original but it all moves so fast that people don’t notice.
Been waiting for this review! 🔥🔥🔥🐝
Great review man. Definitely agree with what you said they could have fleshed out the story better but overall it was solid!
Favorite review so far that I watched and I agree with many of your points. Also from one gore lover to another I entirely agree with you about how they utilize it. Very creative and respectable and honestly makes so much sense for a candyman film. All my other gore loving friends feel different but I’m glad I found someone who agrees with me on that lol
Everything here, sums up my exact feelings during the screening:)
This is the best review of candy man I've seen so far good job Cody
Always awesome content Codes. You deserve more subscribers than you have
This has been my most anticipated movie for the last two years. I just got finished re-watching it in the movie theaters. I really enjoy it this is the proper way to reboot a horror franchise. Another great breakdown Cody. I would give it a 7 out of 10 stars.
woke trash
The bathroom scene with the high-school girls was the biggest disappointment for me
That scene sucked. And the first kill the guys acting was terrible his reaction to the girl getting her throat sliced right in front of him. “Is this real!?” Guy sounded stupid
@@spotos5154 I completely agree!
One of the best scenes in my opinion lol
@@user-ur7yh9tn2m oof then you don’t know good movies from bad ones my friend sorry to say
Aside from feeling oddly censored to a degree, that scene felt completely random and didn't really connect to anything in the movie.
I loved the shadow puppet imagery (well done Nia DeCosta and the art designers!), the cinematography is pretty decent, the art gallery murder scene was good gore & some of the score was good. Unfortunately I was overall disappointed in its execution & our main character isn’t that interesting (and Yahya is a good actor)
Cody this is my first time commenting on your reviews or anything apart from a few Tool and Slipknot videos. I’d like to ask you as a huge horror fan a lot of remakes or reboots are being made the last 10 or so years. In your opinion what reboot of a horror film would you love to see? Some have been amazing some have been poor but if you could choose one that could be made again perfectly what would it be. Thanks for your content, keep it up.
the evil dead remake ruined me. it was terrifying
I wanna say he’s said Christine in past videos but I’m not 100%.
I loved it definitely wish it was longer!!! And yes the end was rushed & yes I wanted more Tony T!!!
Haha I love your thumbnail bro 🤣🤣🤣 great reveiw
Great job on the review Cody!
Your intros are always funny bro
This movie was done brilliantly. The fact he never came outside the mirror unless necessary. He mostly killed them by their reflections. Making it impossible to get away from.
Great review! I just hope this movie gets more people to watch the 90’s original.
I just can`t get my head around anyone who loves the first one liking this new one. Huuuuuuge dissapoinment. I don`t even care about the whole hive of candymen thing, it`s just an incompetent movie scriptwise (It looks and sounds great) and it is pretty obvious that it is missing scenes. maybe studio meddling?.
I've been waiting to here this man's opinion since u left the theater last night. I never hit play so damn fast lol.
Baised off of the trailer, I can get jazzed for this new incarnation of Candyman. I will watch the original very soon. Hope you're feeling better, Cody.
Hey Cody! So I watched this movie over the weekend and that being said it is my first candyman film. Won't be for long but as of today it is. I loved this movie. Absolutely loved it. Honestly before watching your review I had like all positives and we share the mixed view here. I wish honestly they would have just left him as a random artist and not the baby. It gained nothing. I loved the pacing of this movie. Shorter movies work better for me than longer ones tend to. I thought there was ENOUGH gore and loved how they shot the kills through mirrors or off to the side. It was cool. I really liked how anyone can be candyman. He's not one guy. He's what they make him. Meaning the story and the character can keep living on forever. Like I said up there the only mixed thing I had(before listening to you) was him being the baby in the story and it just was something that we could have went without. Gained nothing from it and lost nothing. I honestly don't have any negatives with this movie. There are like you said in your negatives like nobody questioned this guy? Okay true. I didn't think about that before but didn't bother me. The laundrymat owner and his sudden importance later in the movie? Eh? You know? Eh. Mixed. Your negative with not having enough Tony Todd I can understand. But honestly to me being someone who hasn't seen that original one all the way through in one sitting I'm happy he wasn't used more. I don't have a loyalty or tie to him as candyman so it didn't effect me either way. Gave me and a new generation a chance to have our own candyman. But I was happy to see him in his small part at the end. Showing respect to his iconic character. Anyways long story short I loved this movie. Honestly one of my favorite modern day horror movies! 4.75/5 for me. I will own this movie as soon as I can and will be a common watch in my household.
We have essentially the exact same thoughts. I really enjoyed the movie, but I felt myself wanting a little more. I would happily accept a “DaCosta Cut” of Candyman because I could tell quite a bit was cut out of the film that probably would’ve tied up some of the loose ends.
Not as good as the original Candyman....but a good movie nevertheless....especially compared to Candyman 2 and 3.
I actually thought Candyman 2 was better than this one.
I support James and Doug and Brad and Jeremy but Cody i trust your reviews for horror the most! Youre almost always in line with how i feel about the movie
Spot on review Cody. Pretty much on par with my thoughts of the film.
I liked it. I just wish they had more footage of Candyman though. The scariest scene for me was the beginning with the laundry room. Entertaining movie, I find it exciting because certain aspects of the movie totally play to teenagers and the thought of kids hearing about Candyman and then doing the mirror game is really cool. Not sure if kids ever stopped doing that, it was a big thing in the early 90s, but kids will definitely be doing it now and scaring the piss out of themselves, ha. Good times.
Great review like always. Saw it last night. For the most part I agree with your review. I wish there was a little bit more Tony Todd. To me, he's a top 5 horror villain. Really a horror icon.
I hope to see more sequels sooner rather than later.
I am so glad I stayed away from every piece of marketting for this movie, to the point of not knowing whether this was gonna be a sequel, prequel or reboot.
As the reveal of our main character served as a nice twist for me. Honestly did not think they'd try to connect it with the first that much
Going to see it tonight good review my man
This movie needed to be longer it rushed the end. I've seen people are calling it woke I never got that out of it. I liked the lore building it does
Great review man, yeah I'm interested in this. Cheers man🤘😎🤘
Dude...where did you get that shirt?
I was super disappointed with this film. I think they should’ve used Tony Todd way more than they did. They didn’t have to show him onscreen but his voice should’ve been very prevalent throughout the film almost seducing Anthony into his decent
Nah I liked how they used the original Candyman so sparingly, because casual viewers might think this is a pure reboot and not expect him at all. The final scene nailed it
Man I agree with you 1000% on all points. Especially about the connections to the original film and the use of Tony Todd. The whole concept of “the hive” was compelling but it literally went nowhere. We don’t actually see any of the other members as Candyman and how exactly they came to be associated with the myth. All we see was Sherman Fields’ version. Like where were any scenes showing the other hive members as Candyman, and interlace those scenes with Tony Todd’s version so there’s continuity?? So incredibly frustrating.
LOVED this film-from it's beautiful cinematography, it's acting, it's screenplay which was awesome. I give it 5 stars-but I totally understand the love for Tony Todd. I love him in the original-I think that's my only tiny nitpick.
Excellent. I'm gonna watch it. I was never a huge fan of Candyman, but I'm currently on the hunt for a good horror I haven't seen yet. I'm in.
Most metal intro in the CZcams movie review game 🔥💪 thanks for the review. Loved the message in this. In 2021 going into 2022 we've gotta be better to our fellow humans or reap the consequences 🍬
Loved your vids cody my freind till the end
He's the whole dam hive lol. Love how this expands on original lol. Can't wait to see this whole movie especially the ending . that sounds so amazing lol.
Where did you get that shirt? I love it!!
I always like the videos before it even gets started
I agree. Was really looking forward to seeing it. Was super excited by the trailers. Beautifully filmed - good acting. Liked the characters - but left feeling underwhelmed.
My thoughts are pretty much the same exact as yours. Great review
A similar urban legend is if you stand/sit in front of a mirror in a pitch black room (closet, small room, etc) and you say “Bloody Mary” three times, Jesus’ face/head will appear with the thorns; blood will be dripping down his face.
I was disappointed with this film it was soo confusing to me I’m gonna stick with the 1992 original film.
A fair balanced review Cody, I agree they could have utilised TonycTodd a lot more in this film & fleshed out the 3rd act more.
Hopefully a extended cutnis released on blu ray.
I know this is a candyman video but if you want more Terrifying Tony Todd. There's an episode in the X Files called Sleepless that has Todd in it. It's in season 2.
Great review as always, thanks for all the work you put in entertaining us.
I went and saw it today. Personally I thought it was a good movie a solid 6 out of 10. My only real gripe was the (spoiler here for those who haven’t seen it) kills being off screen. If we had more on screen imo it would of been a 8 out of ten for me. I agree though that using the mirrors was a nice thing in this movie. Keep up the great work Cody and hope you are feeling better from the big c
Haven't seen this one yet been hearing mixed thoughts like they took the property and just turned it into more of a Jordon Peele movie and less of a CandyMan slasher so I don't know how I'm going to react to this. Hearing the direction of the ending honestly I don't really have any interest in where this might go.
I think you're right I think a new nightmare film could easily do the same thing this one does. I think it's the best way to bring Robert back for him to just pass down the claw so to speak to someone else who is basically the same type of person he is. Freddy isn't the only type of person to do what he did. I think there has always been more people that could be what he is.
Great review! I loved this sequel. I feel like your feedback was spot on!
Great review.
Saw this last night at an AMC DOLBY theater. And GDAMN this type of theater woulda been perfect for Tony Todd’s booming voice.
We got a piece of it at the end
@@bens3767 most definitely
@@SlotReelPlayer just a piece? Sorry that ain’t enough
I think Tony Todd’s health was a issue with him not being in the film more. At least that’s a rumor I’ve heard on Twitter. Not sure if that’s true or not though
I doubt it, he's been working a lot recently.
I am rewatching the uncut version of the original right now.
Loved the film just wished it was 20-30 more minutes to flesh a few things out. Hopefully we get a sequel.
finally, a reviewer w/ common sense I agree on both points, I was wondering why no one was making the connection btw the killings & his artwork, even the GF got annoyed bc the gallery manager wanted Anthony's work & not hers
and I knew the second she asked the cop to look in the mirror she was going to summon him, now maybe one of the reasons why he didn't kill her as well was bc they were in a relationship, kind of like the Predator having rules of engagement "no weapon in her hand so she doesn't pose a threat," who knows as bad as Anakin was getting, he would've never hurt Padme in that way either
and they never highlighted the fact that it was a brother turning another brother into Candyman after all the racial BS Robitaille had to endure, "some nonsense about Candyman reclaiming his title,"
maybe William Burke was referring to the gentrification that they keep talking about in the movie also refers to how Candyman’s story had been forgotten and replaced with Helen’s
and Tony Todd should've had more of a role, they could've given him a couple of more lines & scenes, we always like seeing the original character come back for a scene or two like in the Mandalorian
Spot on Cody, I completely agree with your points good and bad
Agree with almost everything you said! I was happy with the amount of Tony Todd, as I was actually not expecting him to be there at all except for maybe stock footage. I really like the movie but I think the last bit could have used an extra 15 minutes or so to breathe and set up the climax - that could have bumped it up from good to great.
Good to see you puffing normal
Maybe that pace problem was editing or a production problem . Release the Dacosta cut lol
Can't wait for this to come out on Blu ray
I agree Cody…pacing was an issue for Candyman…and it’s more aggravating when the movie is visually and horror-wise top notch. Still a good film, but there’s some room for improvement. Still glad it’s out! 🐝
felt like something was missing. i was amazed at how fast this movie ended
You and Dumdrums are who I look for, for horror movies and you both basically agreeed!! That’s good enough for me!! Cause that seems rare!! Lol, going tonight!!
Honestly, I didn’t really care for the Candyman movies. Im a rare one that doesn’t really like the first one( the other two are worse.) I’m more invested in just the lore of Candyman! That’s what makes him great to me!!
Well...I saw it. And i loved it. 9/10. Favourite horror movie of the year so far
Where did you get that shirt, man? Cool Af
I’m not gonna lie, I was digging this movie but was soooo confused at the end lol
This movie makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. It’s cool you like it but this script is terrible.
Cody, thank you for keeping this review to the point without injecting personal political opinion. As a short, brown, adopted gay, I HATE the term “woke horror” because it just brings me to thinking of the Black Christmas remake where hubris outweighs the message. Other reviews online are getting *ugly* but this was the first review where I actually feel someone watched the movie.
Yeah it's an easy buzz word that makes people feel they're being insightful.
Are those traits what define you as a person though? I really doubt it. I'd like to think you are more than a short, brown, gay individual. You being those things doesn't make your opinion any better or more meaningful than if you weren't. People are just sick of being preached to.
@@Psilo_Sybin I meant that as a short brown gay, I’m the target demographic for directors to dump their woke garbage on. Take for example Kristen Stewart’s casting in the awful new Charlie’s Angels paired with the male prejudiced writing; one angle was to appeal to the lesbian demographic while the other was to say “Hey. We are cool with you gays but straights are terrible.”
@@Blast2224 For sure I totally get that. The original Candyman though was targeted for horror fans. This one was as well, but alienates a portion of the audience. I guess it doesn't really matter though. If you liked it, hell yeah I'm glad you did. As for me and many others. We don't need hollywood elites taking old I.Ps and turning them into overtly political commentary. Its ok to push a message. But, subtlety is the key.
@@Psilo_Sybin I completely agree. Even though Peele had a smaller role in this, his storytelling *acts* like it’s representing more demographics than it actually is.
I went to this film for Tony. Was glad for the last moment but would have preferred that he have been the one in the mirror the whole time.
2:54 And since he's an urban legend it makes sense that people would tell different versions of Candyman's story not just the Daniel Robitaille "son of a slave fell in love with a white woman in the 1800's and had a kid with her but her dad didn't approve so he got a racist mob to kill him by cutting his hand off and putting a hook on the stump, putting honey on him and getting him stung to death by a bee swarm."
Just watched it and all the things I didn't like in the movie, you mentioned it in your negatives. I do feel that Yahya didn't quite nail the acting or the transformation good enough for me. I was also a bit bored and got impatient with the pacing however enjoyed the pay off.
I finally just saw it, and I guess I'm gonna be the downer...? I felt like the movie felt rushed and none of the "lore" and legend of candyman. I don't hate that they went in new ways with some aspects of the movie/and his backstory, I just felt like there was no real time to stop and breathe and get freaked out about what "could" be the thing freaking people out...some dread & fear to couple with some disbelief. Again, I could be the downer, but it just moved along too quickly and never stopped and got to take part in the environment and tone of the film. I didn't hate it, just didn't feel too fired up about it either. Just kind of a..."oh."
Are you gonna do a spoiler filled review ?
A franchise ranking ?
I heard you are doing the HELLRAISER movies next. Just wondering,ya doing the whole series bud,or just the first through the third? I was just wondering only because you know as well as I do that after "HELLRAISER 3", things start to get very straight to video ruff. And as a subscriber bud,I just want to say sorry man. It ain't my fault, but I am truly sorry. Too bad you can't just Wiki the ones after 3 and call it in bro. Best of luck. Dam you got balls.
