Candyman (1992) - Movie Review

- "I'll split you from your groin...to your gullet."
Candyman tells the urban legend of the hooked horror icon out to spread fear in Cabrini Green. A modern/gothic horror film that focuses on atmosphere and the theme of legends, Candyman is a unique standout of the early 90's. If you have the guts to say his name five times in a mirror, invoke the man himself and lets talk Candyman.

"Candyman" was scary even in the daytime..one of the only horror movies that could do that
Hell yeah I'm still scaried
Because a lot of it takes place in the day time. It breaks all horror rules.
Yep I watched all 3 this past weekend and opened all blinds lol 😂
Was trying to watch it at 3pm on a sunny day on Netflix. The score itself freaked me out in first 3 mins
Wickerman came way before it and did it much better. Candyman is still good though. Midsommer did it now days as well
Guillermo del Toro once said something about Candyman along the lines of "Bernard Rose understands the poetic nature of horror, the images are so beautiful and have such power." It could have been so easy to make Candyman a typical slasher villain, it was so brilliant to make him this seductive, tragic figure, and you are hypnotized just like Helen when he appears, the character himself has power over you. I've never quite seen anything like it, and I'll never forget the image of Helen emerging from the portrait of Candymans mouth.
Candyman is also one of the rare movies that can make broad daylight horrifying because it offers no safety.
Yeah that's where alot of filmmakers go wrong not every horror film has to take place at night or in the dark
Session 9 did it pretty good as well
The most underrated horror classic.
@@richmlvcable I highly doubt it was real. If Candyman was real, he'd be a generic horror slasher.
@@natek4488 he meant the way the actors depicted the terror was very realistic.
@@natek4488
The infamous legend of Cabrini Green was real though. That atmosphere added so much to this film.
"Be my victim"
Candyman is one of the most memorable horror films of the 90's. The main villain is just fantastic. It has its own style. I wish the sequels were as great
Yeah.....
There will be a new CANDYMAN in 2020
Candyman 3 is not as bad as candyman farewell to the flesh
Brilliant film, love this one and loved number 2 as it bounces back to Candyman s roots and his actual family, but 3 was crap
I liked Farewell to the Flesh. Day of the Dead went too much into the big blonde bimbo that cant act territory. You know 80s horror tropes lol
First time I had ever seen Tony Todd in anything, and his performance blew me away. He was scary and foreboding and yet somehow seductive (in the way he spoke to Virginia Madsen) , He had an incredibly powerful presence
The kills in this movie are scary, the sound and grunting really got me.
Being from the Projects in NYC, Candyman hit close to home for me. This wasn’t camp crystal lake, or elm street, this was the hood. I was terrified as a kid after watching this.
lmao
Me too bro 💪lls
Fax I couldn't get passed 30 secs of the freeway scene
@@bigbukkshotz1580
Finally, someone else who gets that! Cabrini Green terrified me more than Candyman himself did! I was born in Chicago. Southern raised but I remember Cabrini Green & ppl taking about it. Just their stories of what goes on there was scary enough. The daily shootings, beatings, etc. Then you have the main character being a white woman walking in there alone like it's a stroll in the park. Helen had some balls! Hell, the film crew had balls to shoot this movie there. That's awesome! It was the perfect location!
I was never inside a high rise project. However, I was outside one a in Philadelphia (where I'm from) back in the 90s, somewhere close to Broad & Lehigh (11th & Cumberland to be exact- they've been demolished since), and it was ominous just looking up at it. The stories that come out of those high rises are abominable. Rapes, murders, beatings, muggings, people peeing and crapping on the hallway floors, etc. Disgusting. It's almost as though the inhabitants and the environment merge together, imitating and reflecting each other. It's a shame. There's probably a great deal of good people who live in there who can't afford regular housing costs and are stuck with these creatures that roam the halls, stairs, and grounds like ravenous wolves.
I grew up in a dangerous, poor neighborhood in Philly (Kensington), but what was normal run of the mill prostitution and drugs for us, was amplified tenfold in those dark mountainous towers I saw. Level after level of human suffering
There's a movement to build low-lying apartments and townhome communities for PHA. They're a lot better- I was in one visiting a friend a couple times in Oxford Circle section. I was young so I didn't really absorb my surroundings, but thinking back on it, it's safer- you don't have to travel multiple stairs or elevators (if they're even working) to get away from danger.
This movie was the definition of underrated
I wouldn't say that everyone from that generation saw it and even people from the new generation has seen it and if not thanks to the sequel coming this June created by Jordan Peele people will really be aware of it now
@@hennessyapplejuice8331 It’s Underrated It Comes To Talking About Horror Movies..No One EVER Brings It Up!
I disagree, but it’s entertaining in its own right. I’ve seen more underrated movies than Candyman.
Candyman is an underrated classic!
One of my favorite horror films ever. Another Clive Barker masterpiece. Tony Todd is the man. Plus, as a horror aficionado, I was so happy to finally see a Black horror icon in the mix... you know, something that wasn't overly exploitative like Blacula.
Candyman is one of my favorite horror movies of all times, almost operatic at times.
I’d say Doug Bradley also has a great voice for horror! Pinhead’s voice was imposing to me at least. Funny enough Clive Barker was also behind Candyman
Candyman is so criminally underrated and overlooked in the genre of horror. Not only is one of the best out of the 90s, its one of the best ever in general. He is truly an iconic monster.
When people make a short list of great horror , they tend to forget it or skip it entirely. Ive always held this as one of the best and it's Clive Barker, so there's no way you could ever go wrong there.
Glad you liked it Mr. leach and nice Warriors Tshirt!
I’m so glad you’ve reviewed this cult classic, Cody. I can’t wait until Jordan Peele does the remake. I love the Candyman franchise!!
Jordan peele doing the remake? STOKED
Yes Jordan Peele is producing the remake I believe. Not sure if Tony Todd will play Candyman though. I hope so.
Alonzo Smith tony Todd is too old now
Please no white candy man I think Tony Todd could still do it but doubt he will. The setting in Cabrini Green was a unbelievable risk but I watched the project get torn down and they were notorious without the movie. How will they recreate the projects or will they cut that out of the story?
It's not like he has to run candyman didn't run he just appeared.
Yessss Candyman is and always have been a gift to the horror community I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!
Well, Scream didn't come out until 4 years later, 1996, so might be why Candyman didn't look like Scream. 😉 However, yes, do agree with you, Candyman is kinda a forgotten gem.
Such an underrated classic! 100% in my Top 10 Horror Movies Of All Time!
My experiences for candyman was horrifying and I loved it. I think is the best horror movie for the 90s
As a Chicagoan I can say you did this movie justice. Thank you ind sir!
What up bro. Candyman is by far one of my favorite horror films of all time, for damn near every reason you mentioned. I think it deserves more credit than people give it. Clive Barker has definitely created a hell of a phenomenon in it. I was in high school when this movie came out, practically a grown man, and this movie STILL scared the shit outta me. Tony Todd has portrayed some memorable characters in his career but he'll always be Candyman to me. Sweets to the sweet, bitches!!!!
what i love about candyman is that it fits right in with other horror movies like nightmare on elm street, but it's on another level of scary. the characters are ultra-realistic, it's shot in the most dangerous parts of chicago, very original story, great acting, and great music. whats really scary is that the thing about the mirrors going from one apartment to another was actually true, not for cabrini green, but for another project building like it. plus as someone who grew up in chicago in the 90's, it has alot of nostalgic value in the scenery.
I'm so happy all of you guys are doing this I absolutely love Candyman, honestly it doesn't get enough love. Great review, glad you love it too 😊.
Agreed
This is one of my all time favs!!! "Be my victim"...
Candy man was a pretty good horror movie it's actually pretty under rated.
This film was the REASON why I got into the writing of Clive Barker and became a fan of his!
Definately one of the best of 90s horror. I would say Candyman is worth Top 10 Greatest Slashers
*YES! FINALLY THE REVIEW IVE BEEN LOOKING FORWARD TO!* I’m glad you enjoyed it. Very underrated
Absolutely
I’m here after the new movie teaser
Tony Todd was Candyman, William Bludworth and the voice of Zoom from the Flash
Wow
One of my favourite horror movies . The score is amazing, Todd is perfect as Candyman and the film has always scared the shit out of me. It's underrated as a horror icon imo. Tremendous atmosphere and setting too.
Candyman is an absolute horror classic in my opinion. I would even go as far as to say that it's on the same par as the original 1978 Halloween and the original 1960 Psycho. Believe it or not, I'm actually excited to see it remade for 2020.
I agree 100% Candyman was the Horror character that scared me
@@dominiquejones3805 Agreed. I've actually seen the newer Candyman since I posted that last comment, and it was good for what it was, but I'm still very partial to the original.
This is one of THE BEST horror movies
Personally, I think the only other actor who could match Tony Todd's voice as the Candyman would be Keith David. Some of his roles have similar vibes to that of Candyman, such as when he voiced Spawn in the animated series.
Idris Elba!!!
Goliath
One of my favorite story, film by Clive Barker. I love the Candyman theme song.
Cody!! Shame on you!! Candyman had to wait all these years for you to see it!!? Ohhhh buddy! Lol. This is a great movie... And it scared the shit out of me as a kid! The next ones I don't even remember so that's not a good sign.. But the original..oh the original! Love the channel man!
Tony Todd is a legend to me. I was first introduced to him through Transformers 2 as the Fallen. But when I saw Candyman...I was petrified. In all the best ways.
I finally watched this film for the first time about a month ago. It’s one of the most underrated horror films and also one of my favorites! It’s a truly unique and beautiful film with a tremendous score by Philip Glass and an iconic performance by Tony Todd. Great review, Cody!
"it was always you, helen" on the wall is intended to have a double meaning leaving it for you to interpret if it's 1) her image and she being his some lost love... OR 2) all the murders were committed by her actually - that she's in fact gone insane. this is like dracula on some levels and other levels it's basically playing with the idea of insanity and delusion. this film is has level you can write a paper on...in fact, i think you'll find there's been papers online about it.
Indeed. You could write a paper alone on just the racial undertones in the movie. One of the best horror movies of all time.
Can’t wait for the new candyman movie in 2020 and Jordan peel will be directed it and Tony Todd will star in it as well
I wonder why they never followed up on Helen becoming an urban legend like Candyman at the end of the film in either of the 2 sequels.
Xehanort10 RIGHT, i keep trying to findout what happened with her after she killed her husband, i figure the mistress was blamed
All around a fantastic horror flick Tony Todd is amazing and the score by Phillip Glass is the best score in a horror movie of the time
One of the small handful of horror films that still terrify me to this day.
Damn I'm super impressed with how well the guy imitated Candyman when he said "HELLLLENNN"..... A+100 on the vocals!! I would recommend everyone to watch a movie twice. U will be amazed at the things u notice and pick up on the 2nd time around. Definitely a smart idea what he did watching the movie twice
Awesome introduction and totally agree, Tony Todd’s voice makes this movie! The tension and atmosphere is some of the best in Horror! When I saw it when it came out, I remember thinking, that’s how you do horror. I cannot say the same about the sequels. Thank you for doing Candyman, a really great Horror movie.
Just watched this film today for the first time. I freakin loved it! And I’m looking forward to the Jordan Peele remake.
Hell yeah is this more than just a typical slasher film. I went into it, like yourself with tha expectation, and was blown away by how great a script it was. Saw it for the first time in October, and it's definitely one of my favourite horror films.
Candy Man is one of the best love stories ever. The whole movie is so complex and it's complexity gives it it's scariness. I love Clive Barker's take on the macabre and the dark. This is one of the movies that embodies his writing(along with the original Hellraiser). Thanks for this review, the younger generation needs to see it.
And agreed, one of the best endings EVER!
I rewatched it today after several several years. It's great and even better than I remembered :D
This was the first horror movie I'd ever seen. I was a kid and I cried in the theater. Lol. Still creeps me out.
This film is scary AF! Total Classic!
I lived in Illinois when it came out and it was a huge ordeal at the time. I love this movie!!! It is one of my all time favorites. Tony Todd has a voice of chocolate death.
This movie deserves much more recognition! At least as much as Chucky, Leatherface and Ghostface. It's in my top 6 favorite slashers. Tony Todd as Candyman is one of the most chilling killers in any movie ever. I'm so glad he'll come back as the cloaked murderer with a hook in the 2020 Candyman reboot/"spiritual sequel" (which hopefully will bring the original the recognition it deserves).
Candyman is always in my top ten horror movies of all time, so underrated and such a masterpiece imo
I love Candyman. It is one of my favorite horror urban legend movies. I love it even more everytime I watch it
Great review... Loved Candyman in the 90's, still love it today!!
Damn, I should see this. I loved him as the voice of Zoom in the Flash show.
Im so excited for Jordan Peeles sequel I could scream!!!! i love Candyman I think its not only horrifying but beautiful. The theme music is beautiful the backstory is beautiful its just an excellent film
I hate it is delayed due to Covid

When Candyman was killed with the bees, i wonder if he was like NO NOT THE BEES!!!
Hahaha
The setting needs alot more credit! The IRL history of Cabrini Green really helped to sell the derelict and hopeless situation of the residents who lived in the projects as well as the racial issues that the movie does such a fine job touching on. Cabrini Green was more than a setting in a horror flick, it was a very real, very scary place. Hell, during filming the local gangs had to be paid off so that the team could film somewhat peacefully!
The first time I saw Candyman I was like 10, and it was that scene in the parking garage. I loved horror but that voice scared the absolute shit out of me for years after lol
YAYYY thank you so much Cody for reviewing my favorite movie ever!! Love the video
Kind of surprised you didn’t mention the score. The music is so iconic, and such a huge part of the movie. Such a great movie. Scared the shit out of me when I was a kid.
As you said it, this is one of the few clever slashers. Great characters development, great score, great social message without being shoved your throat like flicks now days. And I have already had a crush on miss V.Madsen. A little trivia, if you listen to Aborted "Cenobites" you will hear "I came for you at the very end". Onto the sequels, the 2nd is barely decent (shows origins), the 3rd one is just dreadful.
Wow cant believe u never saw candyman till now wow !!
I was 12 or 13 years old when this movie came out and live in Chicago I walked to the theater four times late at night to see this movie on the big screen alone each time. RIP Cabrini Green
This movie became my favourite horror movie even though I've never liked horror movies 😂 "Be my victim" is one of the best villain lines
Ready for the Candyman remake produced by Jordan Peel that's coming out in June ? ?
Can't forget to mention the score of this movie. Philip Glass composing the score for a horror movie? Hell yes! It's some of the best music in the entire genre.
Yo Cody you're review was awesome for the Candyman movie! You said exactly what I was thinking. This movie creeped me out as attend! The music Alone was creepy
Love love love this movie! Saw it when i was 8 and still frightens me to this day. Great review Cody! The musical score is absolutely amazing in this movie!
PS. If you dont like too much backstory to Candyman, you may not enjoy 2 and 3. They give quite a bit. 2 was decent, 3......ugh!
I think the most under rated things about this movie is the score and the setting of Cabrini Green. This is definitely an underrated flick as far as "classics" goes. It's more memorable than people give it credit for and is absolutely a great flick.
This was the first time I saw a horror movie. I watched it hiding behind s chair eating a Butterfinger bar.
Lol
Still one of my favorite reviews by the man Cody Leach. Can't wait to see the new one this week.
I looked everywhere for this movie. I found it at FYE. Great movie. I love it. The pet peeve you have is not a big deal to me. Everything that makes the movie great out weighs that one problem.
Appreciate the review, i watched the whole video but dont remember you talking about the score and classic theme song. One of the most underrated movies ever is Candyman
Iam glad that you loved Candy Man Tony Todd is god he's truly hands down one of the best horror icons and the second film is good but I hear that the third film isn't good
Cody your the man, awesome review as ever & brilliantly summed up, Virgina Madsen acting is excellent in this & Tony Todd as Candyman is terrifying & his voice still gives me chills.
Did you notice how many people are chain smoking in this movie lol.
Love your reviews man, you rock & you don't hold back & tell it as you see it, Cody Leach all review zero bullshit.
I hope you review Candyman 3, my god I can't wait for that review.
Sending the love from England.
P.s did you speak his name 5 times in the mirror lol, Wishmaster good btw sequels awful,
So glad you have reviewed this movie, still the only horror movie that really freaked me the fuck out as a kid. Love it
Great review, Cody! Sidefact: Tony Todd that plays Candyman is also in The Crow film with Brandon Lee......
I forgive you Cody. The 90's SUCKED for horror. Candyman was probably the last good horror movie in a decade. The Philip Glass soundtrack got me right away. I was lucky enough to see it in the theater when I was 13 and it scared the shit outta me!
Candyman is an underrated horror film and one of my favorite horror films ever.
I first saw this at age 6 in the early 90s and to this day it still shakes me to the core
I saw it at age 11 in 93 scared the Hell out of me.
When i was growing up in the 90's me and my older brother watched 'Candy Man' and he slept in my parents room for a week
Dude, AWESOME review, as always. Thank you. Quillemina and I loved it. 👍🏻❤️🦔
fun fact: I lived by cabrini green projects back in early 90's. that place is extremely dangerous but it was fun. walking inside the complex was spooky and you never know what you will see but i love candy man and hopefully new candy man will be awesome 😏
Great review, Candyman is definitely one of my favorites from the 90s the sequel i thought wasn't bad but didn't capture the feel that the first one had and the 3rd film i didn't care for
So glad you finally saw this and enjoyed it! I was on the live stream where you said you hadn't seen it (I was the one who asked for your thoughts on Jordan Peele possibly remaking it!). Great review, man! Don't bother with the sequels, they're both pretty terrible, especially the third one.
Truly great and creepy horror movie indeed.
Tony Todd is fantastic as Candyman and yeah that voice is haunting as hell 😱.
Great review Cody and take care and stay safe 👍🏻.

Also Cody my man, I’ve been w ur channel going on 2 years, so I kinda know ur style. You’d really enjoy Wishmaster bro! At least the 1st. When u do get around to watching it, look out for Robert Englund, and Kan Hodder. I think Tony Todd might pop up, but I don’t wanna speak outta pocket.
