People should actually give him credit for this, before, unless you have played football, you may not notice that De Jong is doing the number rule in defending; delay/hold up the opposition as much as possible.

Thats what I was thinking, forcing a pass is a job well done. People misunderstand defending and think you need to recover the ball. Some of these highlights are De Jong "beating" Messi by closing his way forward and making him pass horizontally or backwards.
