1) James Rodriguez played well and was top scorer, but never in WC history, the golden ball was given to a quarter-finalist player, you should at least play the semifinal. He's out!
2) Arjen Robben was great, but he lost the semi final against Messi's team and got less MOTM award than Messi in the whole tournament, Messi got 4 MOTM. He's out.
3) Maybe a German player, so we think of Manuel Neuer, yes he was a deserving candidate, but I think he lost because of Messi notoriety like Davor Suker lost the award against R9 in 1998.
Conclusion: Messi was a deserving candidate and It wasn't a shame that he won the award, only Manuel Neuer would have been a fair choice after that.
