After seeing all this I now believe that Messi can succeed in any era of football no matter against who and no matter where. The most underrated Messi season is 2019. He was doing the same numbers as his prime but he was pretty much alone in that Barca team, he carried them playing in the midfield and still managed to do tons of plays and goals that are also beautiful to watch. The game where he presented the ballon d'or to Camp Nou was the sumary of his season (Barcelona - Mallorca (5-2)). Just go see what he did. Scary. Van Dijk had a really good season but Messi deserved that ballon d'or. I think he also deserved the 2021 ballon d'or (Lewandoski deserved it in 2020, not 2021 where it was really close between the two). The only ballon d'ors that I wouldn't have given to Messi are 2010 and 2023.
