Which Warhammer? AoS or 40K!

  • Seen a lot of videos about which Warhammer army to pick but a lot fewer about which Warhammer to play; so I thought I'd choose that topic for my first video! Its...
a bit of a mess, but I am proud of it.
Mostly from a lore and model perspective; 2020 was a bad year to go from reading lore and playing video games to the tabletop game in hindsight.
Do please leave a comment if this is something even partway interesting; I'd love to make more videos. More importantly let me know if I helped make a decision here, or if the video is a flaming pile of garbage. Happy Holidays and take care!

I think one thing I like more about AoS, is that the storyline actually progresses meaningfully (if you do like keeping up with that sort of stuff). They aren't afraid to have major lore characters become actually defeated, destroying cities (with their own rules etc) in the background etc.

    • @pancreasnowork9939
      @pancreasnowork9939  Před 3 lety +224

I agree, it’s nice to see major changes like that occur. The only issue I have as far as that goes is that (to me anyways) when a city is destroyed in AoS it functionally is the same as a planet getting destroyed in 40K.
The way I see it because the realms are essentially infinite narratively speaking destroying a major location only matters so much. Like when a planet gets destroyed it’s a big deal but it probably isn’t gonna skate the narrative up much because unless it’s a once in a blue moon event like Cadia it will never even enough to cause the setting to shift. Being across the galaxy or the same segmentum as Terra doesn’t really mean much beyond the writer TELLING us it means a lot.
With AoS the issue is similar. “A city got destroyed at the edge of the realm” and “a city got destroyed in another realm” narratively speaking aren’t that different; a big disaster happened but not somewhere that will make Sigmar and his Sigmarines lose any major ground permanently because then the war game wouldn’t exist.”
I fully admit I could just be biased but compare it to fantasy where every location is solid and set and stone as opposed to “another realm of infinite size” and it feels a lot less significant.
That could just be me though again, and for character deaths and lore like with Morathi and Khaine AoS definitely doesn’t hold any punches in a great way.

As someone that has played 40k, fantasy and aos over the past 20 plus years. Currently own daemons they can be used in 40k (single army with solid allies) or aos (can be used as 4 different armies) and orks which are exclusively 40k.
AOS is currently getting the most interesting development. It is also the most fun in terms of current game state.
40k has this strange feeling of stagnation, sort of like what fantasy had before they tossed it and hit the reset button, ushering in AOS. I don't think they want a 9th age repeat, but they need to put some serious effort into something beyond space marine lieutenants. The necron and dark eldar codices that have recently been released both indicate positive change. Although the dark eldar release is slightly blemished for stacking two dark eldar books ontop of each other.

3 best ways in my opinion:
    1. Go Daemons of Chaos to be able to play in both worlds with one army. It can easily be expanded with the 4 different god subtypes or thanks to Bel'akor as Chaos Undivided in both games. Mix in mortals if you feel like getting specific AoS/40k stuff. It's pretty easy to go on after starting with it. Not to mention that Chaos Daemons alone have 4 different Start Collecting Boxes that give you huge savings.
    2. Save on going Elite and you can cheaply start a decent Ogor Mawtribes and Adeptus Custodes Force at the same time.
    3. Starter Set madness: Invest Starter Sets and get 4 armies (2 AoS and 2 40k) for even greater discounts. But be warned, as it is easy to get overwhelmed by the upcoming task of building and painting all this plastic. But then again, if you find someone to share the cost you both can get 1 army for each game for only 50% of the already discounted box set price. NICE!
    4. Bonus idea, but kinda silly:
Thousand Sons uses a lot of Arcanites of Tzeentch units, so you could basically built an army out of different shades of Tzaangors + Mutalith Vortex Beasts + Chaosspawn + Ogroid Thaumathurge/Daemon Prince Kitbashes. It can be used in both games and easily reinforced with more Tzeentch Daemons in both games.
Or use Poorhammer and only play with stand-ins with friends or try some Wargames that don't care as much about models. For example, I have a Ratkin/Veer-myn force that I use for both Kings of War and Warpath. They even sell mostly the same ratmen models for both games, and I just got some cheap bases and magnets online and bam, now I can just change bases for each game but still use the same models. Nice 😎👍
    Hope these ideas helped someone.
But yeah, Chaos Daemons are most likely the best choice. Can use them 40k, AoS, KillTeam, Warcry, Warhammer 30k/Horus Heresy (as Daemons of the Ruinstorm) and even as Daemons in outside games that are not model bound (as Abyssials/Nightstalker army). It really would be hard to beat them in terms of usability for different games.

When I got into the hobby I decided to go with Age of Sigmar because of the Aztec Dinosaurs (I mean come on). We were still in 1st edition growing pains but I wasn't aware of the vitriol that was happening online. Thankfully that hate has died down with 2nd edition and the game's community is much more healthy so if you hear about Age of Sigmar being bad on the internet odds are it goes back to 1st which did start on a bad foot. But the game has recovered greatly and I am having fun with it. I enjoy the more laid back nature of the game. And it looks like 3rd edition will be just around the corner. I have started getting into 40k but I'm still in the process of painting my tyranids so it may be a while before I can fully play. I had an 8th edition codex but the rules just seemed confusing to me but I haven't looked at 9th yet. I figure though once I get a few games in this won't be a problem.

I have a similar issue with the rules of 40k. The rules are extremely bloated, to the point that I dont think it is possible for them to expmain it simply. I decided for this reason to play my own, stupidly simplified version, and honestly, (mind you this is only MY opinion) I think that re-rolls are one of the biggest problems. Again I ain't slamming GW for their game system, but I feel like bolt-action's alternative activations and no re-rolls is a better system. (Then again, bolt-action IS still only in 2nd ed, so I can only HOPE they dont mess anything up in the future.)

Check with your local game store first of course. As for rules I believe AoS is a bit simpler like you said, but given how complex both of them are I’d say the issue of which one is more complex isn’t one that’s worth affecting which game you go with.

Always love 40k and WHFB lore and setting but I never got into the tabletop games because I don’t see myself sitting down and painting the figures.... poorly too probably.
Kinda wish they had an option to buy them prepainted so some can just hop in and play. Though I understand people love painting and customizing their figures.

I’ve started collecting Raven Guard (Codex compliant chapter) and managed to build a decently sized Incursion force so I’m moving onto Dark Angels (Non Codex compliant chapter) and Drukhari (Xenos). If and when I do get into Age of Sigmar, it’ll be for those Daughters of Khaine (Order), but even in Britain plastic crack is already expensive enough for one who is collecting 3 armies.

Warhammer Fantasy scratches my itch with the Race variety I like; Beast Men, Lizard Men, Skaven or Dwarven Engineers - because Engineers are something every Fantasy needs - blending Fantasy & Scifi with Engineering
