    As a kid I was afraid of the dark because I would see things, mostly distortions of objects or faces if I stared at them too long and paired with my imagination made it more frightening. This movie captured that so well I had trouble sleeping after. AND I had that same toy phone lol

    Honestly, I feel like Lake Mungo did the ‘face scare moment’ better than this film, and managed to interweave genuinely creepy grainy footage into an emotional, unforgettable, and captivating narrative that chilled me to the bone. Lake Mungo is rewatch-able as hell... Skinamarink feels like a concept very effective for a short.

    Listening to you two talk about your own experiences was the best part of this vlog, I suppose if the movie was able to get you thinking about and discussing that stuff it had SOME value, at least. I can totally understand the sentiment of appreciating a piece of art/fiction for what it is without actually liking it oneself, for me this too sounds fascinating at a purely conceptual level but not like something I would necessarily care for.

    I still have that dream about having to take a college final in a class I haven’t attended all semester. I always wake up in a panic and then realize, “hey I graduated college”. So weird. In college, the dream was the same but about high school. Great video! 😊

    There really is a 29 minute version of this movie called Heck. It's on CZcams. The director has horror CZcams channel called Bitesized Nightmare. Skinamarink is a full sized version of that short film.

    I remember being very young, and often waking up in the middle of the night. My entire family would be asleep, and the house would be completely dark. I would usually go sit in front of the hallway furnace. I liked looking through the notches in the furnace so I could look at the blue flames waving around. Luckily, I never woke anyone up!

    I'm not very scared of liminal spaces, either, but they are fascinating to me. And yeah, kinda calming. Sometimes. But I just love the ones that seem otherworldly or wrong, because they are so inspiring.

    When I was still taking classes I would have a stress dream that it is halfway through the semester and I have forgotten to go to one of my classes the entire semester.
    I always find-out about it from my friend telling me that I am going to fail if I don't get back to class and then I go to class and all of my friends are there and everyone is mad at me.

    I watched this movie as an analog horror movie. We're not meant to see everything and everything is up to interpretation. Auditory and visual hallucinations happen. This movie disturbed the hell out of me and I loved it. I can understand how most people didn't like it, because it's boring, nothing happens, etc. I understand that. Also, I also understand that it's a little long for an analog horror movie. Instead of 100 minutes, you can trim it down to 60 minutes. The filmmaker made Heck and you watch it on CZcams.
    FoundFlix did a video about Skinamarink, explaining what happened, etc. Makes sense that way. Metaphors of abuse, absentee father, mother left because of it, and childhood nightmares.

      @TheHorrorGuru  Před rokem +6

      I've seen a lot of videos that try to explain it and I really don't buy any of it lol All of it feels like flimsy Q-Anon like thinking when really the movie is just vague for the sake of it.

    Just watched this today before dog sitting. It didn't make me #StickItInYourEye but this movie felt like someone watched Blair Witch Project and the Paranormal Activity movies and thought: "Not arty enough." and decided to make this. Like yes for me the most tense I felt was when it was in the POV of the kids as the objective shots of the legos, furniture, floor, doors, tv, and hallways just got old. Also the grainy visual just makes it feel more like a 60s-70s home video rather than a 90s home video as cameras in that year since the 80s have moved past the grain look.

    one of my longest-running dreams as a child was being underwater in the dark with a little bubble of light around me and I knew just outside it there were monsters just swimming around. • @katrinab9440
    @katrinab9440 Před rokem +1

    At the beginning of the movie, we hear the dad telling someone on the phone that Kevin fell down the stairs and that he was sleepwalking. Kevin later tells Kylie that he doesn't want to talk about mom. I assumed the mom died and this demon is pretending to be the mom. That's how the demon killed Kylie and how it got Kevin to stab himself. That, or Kevin is seeing all of this in his head when in reality, he killed his dad and sister. That was what I got out of it.

    I did kinda relate to this because I've had dreams similar to this, but as an adult! I used to believe that rules didn't apply to me, and thus having fallen foul of the law and (rightly) been incarcerated, I have had nightmares where I'm trapped in buildings and doors are either locked or non existent. Also, a voice often whispers to me "you deserve this". This is probably some low grade ptsd, but holy shit this movie made me squirm! I'll probably never watch it again. Being punished for making a quick buck is one thing, but there are limits!!! 😄 #stickitinyoureye

  • @galaxionart9338
    @galaxionart9338 Před rokem +1

    Thank you for saying what I couldn’t really think was why I couldn’t get into it because no one else mentioned it! Connecting to any character in this film is impossible!
    As for interpretation, the boy DID fall down the stairs and his sister was there and said he was sleepwalking and we do “see” and “hear” that. Most people believe it’s about divorce and the “mom” abusing them (the dad is gone as soon as the weird shit starts) I just think it’s like the concept film: kids are in hell with a demonic entity. And the mom tells the girl to go downstairs before the mad mama bone crack.
    And check out the short: heck.
    It’s shorter, you get more dialogue from the kid, and you know the sense of time through how many times the kid falls asleep. Still kinda liminal but there’s context which is nice I guess.
    Felt the same way about nighttime being ME time was me during my early tweens. As a young kid my parents were assholes so if bad dreams or insomnia occurs: sneak to the closest room with a television. So analogue stuff and scary liminal spaces are what I have an immunity to. Needless to say, I slept well during the film!
    P.S. What the hell was the IN THIS HOUSE thing in the trailer supposed to be?! Because it’s what truly creeped me out in the trailer and the did nothing with it! What is happening IN THIS HOUSE?! #stickitinyoureye

    Glad you guys at least saw it, sounds like you had as much fun as my friend who had the pleasure of sitting through it with a migraine in the theatre on opening night with me (cuz it was my birthday and I wanted to see the weird horror movie). He was so sick of the damn old tv screens. I was completely engrossed so my friend had fun poking me on occasion to make me jump while we were in the theatre. >.> Needless to say, he learned a lesson about when I say a movie is going to be weird, I mean it.
    In any case, I do give that movie a lot of warnings when it comes to seeing it: don't see it with a migraine, don't see it if you can't stand art house horror, and don't see it if you don't like small children in danger. My heart sunk a little bit when Kevin says he's only four. Demon needs to learn to pick on someone his own size. #StickItInYourEye

  • @shaunmccomish8572
    @shaunmccomish8572 Před rokem +2

    The film does sound like it's trying to convey Horror from the viewpoint of small children, which is interesting.
    Often the genre seems to present scenarios from a supposedly 'adult' perspective; moderately rational with at least some worldly knowledge and assumptions how the world is supposed to work. The horror comes as all this is challenged in the form of some horrific threat that the adult characters can't possibly conceive. When something like Jason, the Cenobites or a Xenomorph shows up, it should naturally feel like the bottom has dropped out of the world itself.
    With small children however, there isn't really anything like a developed reason or understanding. There is simply imagination and naive emotion. Which you can imagine something awful manipulating before it strikes, which certainly is a great way to rack up tension for grown ups watching.

  • @mello2365
    @mello2365 Před rokem +2

    Also, re Lake Mungo vs Skinamarink... the creepy post-credit grainy footage and pictures of Alice in Lake Mungo add another level of tragedy to the story. The fact Alice’s ghost was in fact present in all of the footage, and the fact her parents and brother (who scrubbed through all the videos/photos) have no absolutely no idea their daughter/sister’s ghost is 110% there vindicates Alice in the saddest possible way. She felt truly alone when she was alive, and even in death... her spirit is completely invisible to her loved ones who’ve already chosen to move on.
    The grainy footage in Skinamarink (and narrative shortchanging) just feels like style over substance in comparison. A few decent scares but very little narrative meat on the bones.

    I watched this in a theater with 3 teen girls who I knew would leave like a half hour in, and I was right. This scared the fuck out of me. When I was little, I lived in a decently sized house and I was terrified of the dark. That's where werewolves and Tim Curry Pennywise live. Course that went away when i realized monsters are actually people and i remembered that my door had a lock. This brought me right back to being six. I don't remember if I screamed when the phone rang, but I'd 100% believe you if you say I did. As a movie though, it's hit and miss, which is strange for how effective it was for me. As far as Skinamarink, some really cool ideas, but every complaint you made is justified. I just kept thinking "This is a horror movie for people really into ASMR." Have you seen Heck, a short made by the same director?
    It's under30 min and and don't think I could watch it if it was longer. It is like a visual and auditory torture. Also emotional torture, because you feel for this little kid lost in liminal space that used to be his home, alone. Helpless and feeling guilty for the situation ( often kids feel guilty if something bad happens to them). Very effective in creating feelings of hopelessness and dread... I liked it , so I will watch Skinamarink.
    Edit- so I've just finished watching it! The short was much better at involving me as a viewer. There I felt for the lonely kid. Here, the film just made me irritated. In the end I just wanted to punch this stupid monster in the face. Or the director for the disjointed narration and cheap jump scares.

    I prefer to call this film "Grainy Dutch Angle: The Movie". The first 20 min the premise is interesting but after nothing happens, there is no real risk or stakes, the tension and atmosphere wares out its welcome with no payoff, and there isn't anything visual to hold attention it gets boring. It's unseen whispering kids, 2 failed jumpscares, and lots of shots where the director literally threw the camera into a room and just filmed wherever the camera fell for a couple of hours. The concept was an interesting one but I feel like it needs to be done by better film makers to use it to its full potential. It just totally falls flat here. I definitely agree that this will spark a new sort of subgenre and the future films will be better #stickitinyoureye

    It's odd when you hold the discussion of being at home alone or when everyone is sleeping and the subject of abuse. I LOVCED when everyone was asleep or gone because it meant I didn't have to walk on egg shells because I never knew what was going to get me hit.
    BTW _ Stick it in your eye

    To give the film makers some extra credit, they actually came up with a monster name as deceptively silly as 'Babadook'.
    Skinamarink sounds almost like the name of something out of a Dr Seuss book. Only I don't think it likes green eggs and ham.... more like eating children and listening to Pearl Jam. #Stickitinyoureye

    I kinda watched it with one eye and agree with Guru -the film is too flat to make me want reach inside and makenupy own story.
    The only way it refers to child abuse to me is the way a neighbor may suspect something happening on the other side of the wall, but because they don't have enough information they can't confirm their suspicions. 🤔

    I didn't find the movie scary, but I do recommend it for the interesting visuals. I found it a bit too long. I recommend his youtube channel, though. He took comments about nightmares and made short videos based on them. Very interesting. There is also one I think the movie is based on called "heck". #stickitinyoureye

    This movie was fine, A for effort. However I will say this, anyone else get an edgy PSA vibe from this movie? Like those long form PSAs regarding child neglect/abuse? Is it just me?

    I have never agreed with y'all more in review. While I appreciate this movie for what it is I found it absolutely boring. The only way I can see myself watching this again is if I recommend someone else watch it and I watch it with them. But for me what I really could not stand was that ending. I'm sure it was only about 10 minutes more movie after the climax happens but to meet it felt like 20-30 minutes. It kept cutting away like it was about end but itt just kept on going and going and going showing absolutely. nothing.

  • @dukey42

    You keep repeating "god this, god that" in the review, dispite the christian god never being part of the story. The only vague connection is the Four Horsemen.
    It wasn't god challenging them.
    Nevertheless, the film's ending was too obvious and the 2nd half of the book is much better.
    Love your channel dude, and I dislike the movie as well, but I feel like your whole review here is one big strawman argument.

      They're the four horsemen of the apocalypse, they were sent "Visions" from someone, Eric keeps seeing "someone" in the light - It's God challenging them.
