Yeah game dev here, I am also working on a game for a 'switch successor', that just means I am estimating my development cycle will be done about the time Nintendo would likely release one. I'll tell you that the people who write these surveys definitely don't add questions with inside knowledge.
The switch successor section is just dev stating ‘my PS/Xbox game can be and may get ported to a switch successor based on the estimated CPU spec and estimated time. I can’t see third party doing switch successor exclusive ticked that option due to NDA

I don't know why you'd say "a switch successor" without knowing its actual specs? Seems like you'd be better off releasing on steam. You might be in for a bad time if your game ends up needing to be optimized for the older tech Nintendo will probably utilize.

Hey, I'm a game developer. When many people say they're working on a game for the switch 2. What they mean is that they're making the game with the idea that they've gotta make it run on a handheld. So they don't know when the switch 2 comes out but in the back of their mind they'll keep some considerations like porting to ARM, performance limits, keeping aside cash for a devkit in their budget, not putting in crazy stuff that may not run on switch 2 or reworking stuff to make sure it'll run. This does show though that devs are expecting the switch 2 to be out in less than 2 years cause that's what indie game dev cycles tend to be (averageish. HUGE variance depending on factors).

Unless it's guaranteed to be Backwards Compatible, im not in a rush for the "Switch 2". It'll probably take me a year or so to clear my backlog.

not making Switch 2 backwards compatible might be one of the dumbest things Nintendo could do with this console. With other systems it's different I think, but there are too many Switch owners who will want to play their old Switch games on the new one for them to not have it as a major feature.

But does Nintendo provide you with ANY spesifics about the next console? Don't need you to spill the beans I'm just wondering won't you need a certain amount of info to make sure the game will run good on switch 2?

I just know I’m definitely gonna be releasing it on the next system, as it makes sense it’d be another single-screen device with relatively decent power. The only way I wouldn’t would be if it was dualscreen for some reason, which seems completely ruled out.
Which is a possibility that Arlo brings up. Whether he's right or wrong at least he's entertained the idea.

"we're working on an engine for the game that we expect to be on the switch 2" "we're designing a game with the switch's control scheme in mind, which we believe the Switch 2 also has" "we have a solid concept for a switch 2 game, and are ready to immediately start development as soon as we have information" there's SO many things that could mean.

We know some hard facts. 2022-2023 end of year fiscal reports, nintendo's suppliers reported upticks in profit due to "new supply contracts for new components". We'll know the new hardware before the end of the year.
I'm almost certain they will drop the news at the upcoming direct. Why else would they schedule a direct in February when there is no big game they could possibly announce.

@thediesel1241 they always have a February direct, they're still have Mario VS DK, Princess Peach Showtime, Paper Mario 1000y door, Luigis Mansion 2 HD, and probably loads of indie titles to talk about. I'd definitely expect a console announcement sometime from july-septemeber, that way they're not taking away the news cycle from the games they're already releasing. I think a direct in the summer showcasing the new console and some launch titles is inevitable, but in February??? not even a chance

The way Arlo's just begging the devs to tell him everything at the end. I feel you, man. Still, of all the Switch 2 rumors, this definitely seems like the most likely to be true. We still probably have to wait maybe a month or two to learn about the details, but if that many people are already developing for it, then I'd say it's probably coming by the end of the year. I hope so.

people will hate this and a lot probably won't agree, but i doubt it's coming this year. The switch isn't selling as much as it did a few years back but it is still doing a very decent amount, and seeing how many games they've announced that are coming (mostly Mario ones), it's clear they're trying to sell as much as they can from this Mario hype. announcing switch two would make remakes and new releases feel overshadowed in comparison, and knowing how much consoles cost i doubt many people will wanna buy a 60$ remake rather than spare for the new console. I do think they're gonna announce it in a bit, but both announce it and release it? Ehhh idk. then again i'm not saying it's impossible, it's not like i'm an expert in business and sales.
I'm hoping they aren't just trolling us.

I don't know think so. If they were gonna release it in September we'd at least know the code name of the project.
The two dates we can officially cross off are Black Friday and the Friday before election day.
@@DharengoWe didn’t know the official name of NX was going to be the Switch till October 20th, 2016. It launched less than 5 months later on March 3, 2017.
Assuming Nintendo follows a similar schedule between announcement and release; if the Switch-U launched September 1st, we’ll have it’s reveal announcement on April 18th.
Honestly I’d expect it to be released in November (due to most consoles historically releasing then, the Switch was an oddity). Honestly I’d argue the Switch would have been pushed back to November of 2017 to release if not for the fact that Nintendo had to push it’s release forward to help stop the financial bleeding that was the Wii U. That gives me pause to not worry about an official announcement till May (though by the same token as my prior point, the Switch’s release cycle may have been truncated due to how poorly the Wii U was doing; so an earlier announcement wouldn’t be unheard of either).

It’s like every week we have a Switch 2 rumour about it being revealed next month after the previous rumour about that last month. I just wanted to be revealed already so we don’t have to deal with all the rumours 😂

Same with the next nintendo direct "coming up around next week!" since the beginning of the new year. Like sure nintendo has been doing january/february directs for a solid 4~5 years straight now, but just wait until they confirm the date rather than making up rumors about it every week
It's been like this nonstop since a few years after Wii U launched. First about NX then Switch Pro then Switch 2 for like 9 straight years now

People should expect very little in the next direct if they think the Switch 2 is coming soon. They are not going to announce a new system in a standard Direct.
@@ShallBePurified yeee, that'll get it's own announcement most likely past the summer releases. With LM2 HD and TTYD being pretty clear Switch wind downs and the only noticeably uncovered upcoming switch games (that don't really need that much coverage tbh) it's very unlikely they'll have much to announce outside of a little fall and maybe holiday stuff before the switch (ha) to the next console which the next big games are almost certainly intended for.
My crazy conspiracy theory is that Hollow Knight Silksong will be releasing around the same time as the Switch 2. An indie game as a launch title would be insane and probably isn't realistic but it could explain why we've gone so long without literally any updates. Maybe Team Cherry has known the whole time and has always been planning on releasing it around the Switch 2 release.

If they revealed the switch 2 at the top of the direct and then immediately after they said "and releasing with this new system will be" and then they show silksong footage i think i would actually die
I just want improved loading time. Back in 2020 when I played Animal Crossing, I looked at the loading screen and told myself "if Nintendo is ever going to improve the next system, it's gotta start with loading time."
It should be an easy fix now. They need to replace eMMC's with SSD's. Since eMMC's have an inherent read/write bottleneck and SSD's should only be going down in price - it shouldn't be unreasonable to expect to see them in a new console to fix load times. The real question is, are Nintendo willing to pay the cost for quality storage, or will they once again use dated tech to undercut the consumer? After all, they know that most of us will pay for the prestige of a Nintendo product.
I've sat out on purchasing Nintendo consoles since the Gamecube, but they could drag me back with some competent hardware. They almost got me with the Switch, but the load times, the pricing and the low quality made to fail controllers are ultimately what turned me off.
Honestly I imagine a bunch of people working on Switch games would *assume* their games would be compatible on the Switch 2, and thus they are working on a Switch 2 game.

I vividly remember watching that video the night the Switch got announced at the Direct and I saw a few people in chat saying it was going to be available for preorder after the Direct. I was chatting to a friend on discord and keeping an eye on the Amazon page on and I was going to go to bed and chalk it up to a false rumor, but at like 1 am my friend tells me preorders went live and I got my Switch by pure luck day 1.
At this point, I just want confirmation, so I can give myself permission to get hyped. Everything seems to be indicating that it's coming, but there's always that little part of your brain that's like "What if none of it's real?" I love listening to rumours, but I always have to stop myself from believing it 100%, so the sooner it gets confirmed the better for me.
I'ma help you out. What's the roadmap of games coming that you don't know dates about except for the Paper Mario remake?

Something I like to think to myself, is that the next system is actually like entirely ready and verified for selling. They're just getting a bunch in stock for the release, but slightly more importantly they're letting the developers that are working on it work their magic so they can avoid the switch's first issue of only having 2 launch titles. They want something to fill all that lovely free home menu space up before they go ahead and drop this monster of a bombshell

The switch launching with Botw and 1-2-Switch is a lot like the N64 launching with Mario 64 and Pilotwings. When one of your launch titles is one of the greatest and most revolutionary games of all time, and has a lot of longevity, the rest of the launch lineup can slack a bit.

I'm not anti-new console, I'm anti Switch 2. One of my favorite parts of being a Nintendo fan is each new piece of hardware not just being "the previous thing but better" but something wholly different and novel. One of my worst problems with Wii U is that its life span was cut short before enough games that showed what could be done with it came out. There's a million games from previous gens of Playstation I could play that I haven't yet - I've got tons of games on my backlog. But I want NEW stuff. I want to play games in completely new ways. Gimme more Kid Icarus Uprisings and Metroid Prime 3s. I want weird hardware, and I want games that rule that hardware.

Even if it *IS* against the NDA, how the hell would you do anything about it? If you try to sue, you can't prove any one person did it, without maybe looking through DNA evidence of thousands of papers that could be anywhere by now, that were In a public space, and finding fingerprints. Only other way would be to blanket say anyone who did sign it that went to the event goes down but.... Come on.

If Nintendo knows who attended, they might have some idea of who spilled the beans. Even if that’s not enough for a lawsuit, they could just choose not to work with those people in the future. Not nearly as bad as getting sued, but that would be enough to make me hesitate to break NDA for the survey.
They test the suspected offenders with unique identifiable fake rumours and sue whomever spills the beans.
I'm kinda disappointed that people aren't calling it Switch U more often as a joke. But maybe we just want to collectively avoid a Wii U sales situation.
I appreciate that this was a pretty measured take. I backed a Kickstarter project that sent out a survey sometime last year asking backers if they would be interested in a release on the next Switch console and I remember wondering then this same thing - if dev kits were out or this was still hypothetical. I would be surprised if we didn’t get a release date announcement sometime this year, though I wouldn’t be surprised if the console actually doesn’t drop until Q1 2025. For me, I still have a huge backlog on my Switch and am still loving it, so I’m in no rush, but it definitely feels like the next console is coming soon. So I get the hype.
The 7 year console cycle is the only thing I need. It's held up pretty strong in the past and it's the soonest the company can get away with a new system without angering fans. Delays are unlikely when a cash cow like that is constantly on the horizon.
Two general Nintendo thoughts I have had recently:
1. It's amazing how my Switch still performs so well after almost seven years (joycon drifting aside)
2. I would like to know what the canteen at Nintendo of Japan offices is like.

@@royalcass For good reason honestly. It lacks so much content, and the content it has is mostly just copy and paste. People definitely overhate the switch avatars, but they were made so they could wear cosmetics, which is honestly the coolest part of the game is all the clothes and stuff you can wear.

@@hued2542 they're both Mario franchise titles so kinda by default yea. Origami King sold 3 million and Luigi's Mansion 3 sold almost 14. They're the main games announced last direct that won't be out super soon so outside of a couple quicker reveal to launch everything else is headed to headline a Switch 2 I'd assume.

The only problem I have with the switch is the dock. The switch is portable but the dock isn't. Taking your switch to a friend's house that doesn't have a switch and being forced to play on a tiny screen when a tv is available is frustrating, really hope Switch 2 fixes that

This is very intriguing! I personally think maybe, that some of the people are actively working on games for the Switch 2, and maybe some are planning to make it for the Switch 2. I feel there definitely could be multiple different reasonings within the 240 people stating that. Idk for sure but if this is saying something for when it’ll release that is really neat!
I’m calling it now, monster hunter wilds will be on switch 2 when it launches. Think about it: it won’t be releasing on the 20th anniversary of monster hunter, it will launch in 2025. They have presumably been working on this game since mhw dropped back in 2018, so why delay? The reason: they want to launch it on switch 2 as well. Why not talk about the game till summer? They want to wait till switch 2 is announced
As the Switch turns 7 next month and we start working into its 8th year, all i can think is what the President of Nintendo, Furakawa, said back in 2021, in the Switch's 4th year. "The Switch is only in the middle of its life cycle. We have no plans for a new successor just yet." Now i took that as we would probably see the next Nintendo console around 2024 with a release of 2025 to complete an 8th year cycle. However, Nintendo is known to say "No" to a lot of rumors while sweating profusely. But with the Switch at over 135m units sold (I've heard if they can sell 15 million units, they will surpass the PS2 on sales) maybe 1 more year without a successor could give them those sales. But i wonder, who still needs a Switch at this point in time?
The thing is, they’ve started r and d on the new console probably months after the switch launched. All console devs do that, that and the switch 2 can launch this year, while the switch one still gets support for a couple more years, making the statements about it being in the middle of its life cycle true even with new hardware on the market

Switch successor doesn’t exactly mean a Switch 2. It’s closer to meaning just whatever comes after Switch. It’s like Switch being the successor to Wii U, or Wii being the successor of the GameCube. Saying the successor of Game Cube wouldn’t mean Game Cube 2 exclusively. It’s still something, but I’ve been so exhausted by the Switch 2 hype that it’s really turning me away from the idea. People were begging for it way too soon after Switch’s release and it makes me concerned for the state of people’s ability to feel satisfied with what we have. I’d rather something new
This was the first tangible thing, but it was a while ago (in news cycle years). More recently we have the 8" LCD order numbers and even paperwork on imports of Nintendo controllers that are slightly larger than current Joy-Cons.
They are just rumoured, can be faked
And when they reveal Metroid Prime 4 for the Switch 2, it will still be a couple years away with a vague window of a release date.
If they use the same logo reveal from the switch announcement it would be hilarious 😂.. But I assume it will release in the first year of the next console

Even if none of these rumors existed and Nintendo managed to keep everything under wraps for a shadow reveal, you can still make a reasonable guess that we're pretty close to seeing a reveal trailer given the standard amount of time between console releases. Everything else on top of it just makes it a close guarantee we're gonna see a reveal trailer by, I'd say, summer's end
Current Switch used old 2015 non customised processor. Can't wait for a new customised processor inside a Switch 2. See what a newer customised processor likes AMD 7840u inside Rog Ally can do. Switch 2 ❤❤❤

Unless it's backwards compatible with graphics upgrades for existing switch games, I'd rather the delay Switch 2 as much as possible. I just want to play the latest nintendo releases, and id rather not invest in a new console right now.

I'm convinced that the people who are against any discussion at all about Switch 2 rumors are really young and weren't around for online speculation about N64/Gamecube/Wii/Wii U and don't remember all of the rumors about those.

It's been 7 years, the switch is a Dinosaur in terms of specs. It needs to be backwards compatible for people to jump on board immediately. Otherwise, the first 5 games they have for release can get stale fast.

Well, the Switch 2 might be coming, but, I will say, if that is true, then this would be Nintendo's shortest hype train. Usually, Nintendo hypes things up for over a year or more. But right now, they seem rather tight lipped. So if a Switch 2 does drop later this year, it will either be simply a beefed up Switch or it's not coming this year at all. I just don't see it likely unless Nintendos' PR machine kicks into overdrive right now, which it doesn't seem like it has at all right now. We shall see :)

There was actually an article about the people ahead of the Switch OLED and they’ve said not utilizing upgraded hardware was a conscious decision in order to not abandon those with weaker Switches

I was at the Nintendo live event in Seattle in 2023. I met a guy who said he was a sound engineer at epic. He was saying that some of the higher ups on the unreal engine team had their hands on dev kits but apparently ony certain people have access to the hardware and they arent allowed to talk details even internally.
I do think it wont be until late this year/next year since they're releasing the second part of their dlc for one of their main line franchises this month (Splatoon 3), and will want people to actually buy and play it rather than releasing a new console and ending up getting less sales on it

Particularly the fact Nintendo tries to innovate even when it isn't needed, the role the Switch fills would be great and just improving things could sustain Nintendo alone. They will likely put some crazy Innovate but what kind of innovation?

The NDA would cover anonymus surveys, but you're unlikely to be caught and when they just say "Switch successor" I think you can get away with it because there is plausible deniability. Working on a game for the Switch successor just means you targeting the exoected specs of the platform and maybe implementing features rumoured to be on the new platform.

Is it me, or dose Nintendo have a terrible habit of having remakes before releasing a new council? Mario Super Stars before the Nintendo 64, Mario and Luigi before the Nintendo Switch, and the recent Mario RPG remake by S-U before the Switch 2. Seems like an old habit that Nintendo needs to break. Because that usually tells me that a new system is coming soon-ish.
It's because they usually end off with a buffer period of B-team games while the main studios make the red meat for the new console.
Its a logical move. You want the new system to have great new games out of the gate right? But, millions also want games to play on their old system. Its a win win.
I wouldn't attach that much importance to it, people making a game for consoles on a popular engine to release in the next few years that aren't too demanding probably consider Switch 2 a serious option given the success of the current one.

I would love if switch 1 joycons were comparable with switch 2 ones if they do have joycons. I imagine it will just be the switch but slightly different. They kinda perfected the design with the switch. If only they made the joycons a little more comfortable.
Honestly I trust this piece of information since it’s so vague. I assume even if half are lying it’s still a decent amount of people. I’m not going to be trusting leaks and I’m glad you haven’t been jumping on the switch 2 leak rumor bandwagon

I buy that with the hesitant developers in 2017. Just remember, the Dragon Ball Fighterz Devs said they only bring it on Switch , when enough people want it. And that was after the Switches amazing Launch.

I don’t really care what the console is, but I want that feeling of playing Mario odyssey for the first time again. That game was just something I haven’t experienced in a while. Nintendo, give us another Mario Odyssey.
Ever since my switch got stolen recently last year, I’ve been waiting for the next switch before buying a new one.
One thing I don't get is that for the past several Nintendo consoles they released along side a BIG Ip, normally Mario or Zelda. Totp released towards the beginning of last year and Mario released towards the end of last year. The only game I can see being released along side a new Nintendo consoles is Gen 10 Pokemon.
Mario Wonder was a new 2D Mario release, but that doesn't interrupt or displace 3D Mario, which we haven't gotten since Bowser's Fury technically, but a full game since Odyssey.
Also I don't think Pokemon has ever released a new gen within the launch year of a system. Its almost always a year 2 thing.
Keep in mind there hasn't been a dedicated new 3D Mario release since 2017. I'd be genuinely shocked if the next one doesn't release in the launch window.

One of the things we learned in first year Marketing was prior to big launches.. companies can create hype for having “leaks and rumours” go out. Get the audience excited before a big announcement 😃

I get a new console sounds great but I have 0 expectations to see it before 2027 since when they announced the switch they said that they are aiming for a 10 Year Lifespan for the console so why would they launch the successor 3 years early.
I wouldn't mind being proved wrong as I'm excited to see what's next too but I feel everyone is just getting their hopes up just for them to get hurt when their hopes don't happen (kinda like the ppl getting hyped over Pokémon "leaks" they are just hurting themselves...)
The best bit about pre-release hype is, you definitely know that in the week of release after everyone and their mum made a video on the new system people will start asking (non-ironically I might add) “so what about the next system?”
So I’m predicting if Switch 2 comes out that maybe even on the same day the questions about Switch 3 will start coming in 😂
I definitely think there's a "Nintendo Switch Successor" cooking in the background somewhere, but I also wouldn't put too much stock in that survey. Even if a lot of that 8% are people actually working on games with knowledge of the next gen Nintendo console, it's more likely in my eyes that most of them are just people working on essentially Switch games but not planning on releasing them onto the Switch, because the easiest way to ensure your game is dead on arrival is to release it right at the end of a console's lifespan (dual console releases excluded obviously).
I bet you that the prime 2 and 3 remasters will come out leading up to the release of the switch two with prime 4 coming out on the switch 2 as a launch title. Just wait until prime 2 remaster comes out then use the time between the release of 1 and 2 as a gauge for the release of three and presto you have a timeline for the release of the switch two.

I don't get this. What is it meant to prove? That a new Nintendo console is coming? It's ALWAYS coming, it's just a matter of when.
And if you think about it, games take years to develop, those devs might be working on titles not due for years yet.
Checking the box on the survey would almost certainly be a violation of the NDA. The question is whether the respondent would ever be caught. If it’s truly anonymous, then they’re likely in the clear, but you can never be certain about that sort of thing.
It's a bad year... mainly because of Sweet Baby Inc. Game releases are treading on a thin line in 2024, won't expect any announcement from Nintendo much less Switch 2 reveal.
I can expect Spawnwave reported that Nintendo wants a development partnership... kinda like RnD Model in Valve.

Doubt it.. At least if it's the only one.. The fanbase is not big enough.. I'm thinking mabye a Mario game for launch and then metroid 4 for holiday.. They will have to promote the game at least a little bit before release
