  • Frontier have increase the cost of Elite Dangerous cosmetics on the ARX store. Many items are now close to double their original value. This happened late last week without Frontier providing any advance warning.

    A correction to this video: On the 23rd April Frontier stated that; "Starting in May 2024, you will notice a change in how we approach the gamestore - which will also include ARX pricing adjustments for some of our cosmetic items"
    Whilst this is certainly notification that there will be "some price adjustments", that is entirely different to "we are increasing prices across all cosmetic items, and in some cases almost doubling them."

    • @Lucasolvalou
      @Lucasolvalou Před 16 dny +15

      Most sane folks took that to mean big ticket items might get rounded up and smaller items rounded down for a net price gain while keeping things in the same pricing range. Some things increasing by 275% is beyond bonkers. Still cannot fathom why this company would crap on their playerbase like this. Frontier needs to make money and we want to support them but devaluing ARX is just pointlessly dunking on players. There's over 20 years of empirical data concerning the relationships between devs and players and business models that work and fail.
      They could have raised the price of ARX packages without shooting themselves in the foot. They could offer a premium $10 monthly service that doubles storage and/or resources gain and people would actually celebrate. What they've done is obviously a desire to milk the dying cow, but it doesn't change the fact it could have been done more effectively. For both them and their players. Truly bizarre business practices at Frontier.

      Why they didn't just increase the price of arx and punished all the people who already have some of them? Some players will simply play less to grind arx or will not buy them in advance, because they are afraid of price changes. I don't understand this strategy.

      Frontier are a dying company. They are losing customers and are trying to grab cash from wherever they can. If they hadn't lied to, and abandoned their console customers they wouldn't have lost over a third of their customer base and wouldn't need to grab extra cash from their remaining customers. I've stopped playing any Frontier Developments games because of their poor customer service and their disrespect towards their customers.

      They need like 2 years to release a new ship, which is just a modified version on an existing one. They don't work on this game anymore. Probably a "work on elite when you have some spare time after working on your actual current project" type of deal.

    • @cmdrstevemcmaru7417
      @cmdrstevemcmaru7417 Před 16 dny +2

      Exactly my point... I understand, that FDEV needs money for development and server maintenance, but finding that out after 10 years and then just doubling the price for cosmetics (even though you don't have to buy them to play the game) is ridiculous. Why didn't they increase the prices in small responsible steps over the years? They knew, when they don't develop new DLCs, they would't generate any money. I really like the game and play in VR, Anti Aliasing is terrible in VR (but still enjoyable) and requires some update, Odyssey as non VR is also no fun, but I am ok with it, personally don't like that part of the game anyways. Selling starter ships in the ARX store is also ok for me as everything can be achieved in game (when FDEV kills the engineering grind). The ship sale might be a good way for FDEV to earn money to support the game we all like. Just my 2cents

      But this is FDev, so they don't care at all.

  • @jgpg14

    Man, Elite really leaves me conflicted nowadays. I absolutely fell in love with the game back in 2017, I got all my friends to buy it, I put 100s of hours into it and did the grind before engineering eventually left me feeling burnt out and unsatisfied. After the Odyssey debacle, I uninstalled and left the game sitting in my library for years. Finally upgraded my PC, and it was one of the first things I reinstalled to come back, but the magic is somewhat gone. Its one of those games where I WANT to play it, I love the IDEA of playing it, but then I log in, stare at my screen for a bit, maybe run a mission or two, and then log off.
    I try other space sims ranging from NMS to EVE Online in an attempt to capture that feeling of escape, of freedom, of utter awe I felt the first time I finally got my bearings in Elite. The sheer shock followed by joy when I used a docking computer for the first time and it piped Strauss into the cockpit as it effortlessly steered me into port after I struggled so much to dock. But no other game really captures it. Between Frontier being Frontier, the unrealized potential of what the game could be, and now the somewhat interesting monetization choices (putting it politely), its hard to want to boot it up again.
    I desperately hope that their plans for powerplay, and increased attempts to secure more funding, are an indicator that they are in fact looking to shake the game up and finally get around to allocating some dev time to Elite, but I have a feeling that the game is fizzling out, and we're watching the slow death of the one true space sim of the 2010s.

    • @SabiJD
      @SabiJD Před 16 dny +14

      I was, and still am, on console, and the lie about Odyssey was my loss of faith/hope in the inchoate clowns running the company.
      As you said, there was a genuinely unique magic to Elite at one point. For me, it was the '1:1' galactic scale. I know for most that's a turn off or a point of friction, but it was that which really set it apart.
      Planning for deep voyages beyond the Sol bubble, and travelling for several weeks, led to some of my favourite gaming memories ever. Discovering a white dwarf with a fast/close orbiting landable planet was a real highlight (I carried on to Colonia, then headed back to the system to land on it. easily my favourite, and most risky, approach and landing I ever did).
      It was the perfect podcast game, too... certainly for a deep space explorer. The HOTAS helped transform the experience of playing it even further.
      Due to Odyssey, I quickly found it increasingly hard to respect or even enjoy. Yes, it's only a game ultimately, but I'm not entirely sure FDev were aware of how much it meant to some people, and therefore how bitter it was to see them fumble and exploit Elite - corroding what it was once until we get to--- well, the current/latest shitshow.
      Kudos to the coders and workers, but fuck Braben and the management. I am still thankful of what it used to be, but I'm also still deeply resentful.

I joined with friends and all burned out before release but I stayed longer, left then came back again then left again. I bought my Hotas for this game and later Voice Attack then lastly a VR headset. My only reason to go back is VR but it's a shame they stopped supporting it. I don't want to pile on a load of negativity about devs etc but this game leaves a big gap to fill that nothing else has managed so far.

    Recently I had been playing the game with the goal of buying my ships some skins with ARX I had collected over the years, and this is just such a slap in the face, even if in the grand scheme of things some skins aren't gonna change my enjoyement of the game. I may have certainly missed some news but I don't think FDev has stated that the increase is to help future development of the game, it could likely just be a tactic to try and recoup costs from previous development. In other words, the cosmetic cost increase can happen and FDev also might not be planning much more beyond BGS 2.0 and the content that we know is coming. I guess I'm just saying that FDev should be more up front about what the future of development for ED (major content updates, additional features, etc) entails.

    I have played this game for ages. Originally on a sloppy laptop, then a Xbox and now on a high end PC. As a general rule I don’t purchase cosmetics but was considering buying the 85k as the weekly accruement is a joke. Now I won’t. I don’t like being taken for a ride.
    Now imagine if Elite halved item value instead of the increase, I would buy Arx, and go nuts.
    Even if the reduction was a random 48 hour period once a month. Players would be more inclined to spend frivolously and Elite would increase player satisfaction which may positively affect share price. Just imagine.

    I love that my time is now worth even less to fdev, somehow. So much for saving up for my dream cosmetic set.

    FDev: Holding a smoking gun, shooting what’s left of their feet.
    Also FDev: Why is our game dying?! The profits must grow, think of the shareholders!

    Elite dangerous made $121m since release from Steam sources. How much money did FD reinvest in ED vs allocated funding to failed projects. Trying to turn ED into a cash cow again

    And here I thought 'changes to ARX store' means an overhaul to the thing... stoopid me
