They gotta get rid of the random +x% boosts that make you reroll. I think if they did that (and maybe made rep gains from engineering projects a bit higher to compensate from rolling less) that'd help out a ton. It'd make engineering cost less, and I think perhaps a slight reduction in cost of engineering on top of this would be nice too to help reduce the grind. I think a rework of some of the engineer unlock requirements would be good too. Focus on the ones everyone cheeses like e.g. Etienne Dorn's 50 escape pods, make them less obnoxious to get.

I think it was about a year ago when you made a video about a financial report by Frontier, which had me worried. The game made money and they expected it to keep making money for a few years, but looking at it, it also seemed like the sort of thing execs would say "keep the game running as long as it's profitable but wind down support and updates", essentially abandoning it. Glad to see they chose to keep updating the game instead and maybe realized that there is a lot that the game is great at compared to competitors. As for the monetization, I don't mind actually. The game has to make money if we want any attention on it, we can't have our cake (of minimal monetization) and eat it too (get updates to the game at this stage). And this is not too bad of a way to do it. I hope this new push is successful and this really is the start of a new era for the game.

I think the price increase is entirely the wrong approach. What they NEED to do is add stuff that is actually worth buying. I am currently sitting on some 40.000 arx but there is nothing I'd consider worth buying. I have the paint jobs, weapon and engine colors I want. Most of the ship kits are bleh and the thargoid kits are not transformative enough.
They need to figure out things that are both cool and fun. Like space fireworks, alternative horn sounds, light decorations, etc. And just imagine the things they could sell you if you could decorate your ships interior, not just your cockpit with some lame bobbleheads.

I didn't realize until now that I started using it more, but SCO is a way bigger gamechanger than I thought at first. Trading, exploring, bounty hunting (hunting down pirates for contracts for example is a lot more combat and a lot less cruising to signals) or fighting in combat zones are all much more convenient now. Even for smaller distances, giving a boost at the start feels great. It's not just faster and a lot less tedious to move around in system, but also more engaging. And also, seeing that a station or objective is 50k Ls away, doesn't produce the same groan it used to. It's not a huge change, but SCO had a very positive impact on everything I do in game. You hit the nail on the head here. I hope your conclusions about the future are just as correct.

It's cheaper to buy the deluxe edition of Elite Dangerous + a Pre-Built ship, than it is to hop into Star Citizen. Long term players might forget the game isn't easy to just hop into and start, there's a lot of complexity to it. The Pre-Built options just offer an easier way for new players to get into the game, which is good for everyone. Frontier doesn't have the insane budget the triple AAA studios have.

For myself, I say that FDEV certainly did catch my attention, and they seem to have put much more thought into the first new ship they released, when compared to the slightly bulkified cardbord copies of the past that were Viper and Cobra 4. Honestly I feel like that would just a be a waste of time in the current game. What would I be gaining for walking in out of my ship over and over? Time it takes to take off? I would like to see more purpose for being on the ground, like some level of deployable outposts kinda like No Man's Sky or Astroneer. This would give more purpose to being on the ground for those who are far from home, being able to setup and camp for scanning or mining or just repairs/replenish while away. IF THOSE THINGS were in the game then it would FEEL more sensible for me to be able to walk in out of a "Functionable" ship. But not ship interiors just for the sake of seeing the inside of my 1km (slight exaggerated distance) long Anaconda every time I want to take off.

By the time ED gets ship interiors I'll be able to play it on a holodeck. I don't mind buying ships... I do it often for a lot more money with Star Citizen. I do however expect a higher quality of ship and interiors if I'm going to do so. Its too bad also, because ED is/was a lot of fun, especially in VR. Very deep map screen and trading system also. The biggest problem for me is no ship interiors and I really don't have much to do anymore after acquiring all the ships, most engineered after all these years. Without more immersion like exiting and entering full ships that are a little more detailed I can't see me returning.

For me only, it's not about being able to walk around a ship. Walking from and to a ship because I can't teleport or wake up in a bed on a ship, is just a walking simulator precursor to the content I'm looking for in Elite Dangerous. I don't mind it in Star Citizen because it's a different game with a different premise.
What I want from Elite is to experience a story. A personal story. I played the original and loved it despite my youth, I played Frontier: Elite 2 and I loved that because I remember the bulletin board and the mission givers and the moon mining and the combat without joysticks it was just great story telling. If there was a grind I didn't recognise it.
The best grind is one you don't recognise because you're experiencing a story that has drawn you in and is rewarding you, advancing your abilities, knowledge & understanding of the lore surrounding you.
A buyout with £100M reserve would see Elite back to its roots but with 21st Century story delivery. It doesn't need to be multiplayer or even co-op. Private hostable servers would be fine for those that want to partake in that kind of story.
What all the space ship flying games are lacking is the hook of encouragement to start up the launcher - at least for me personally. I play with dual hotas and pedals. It's great. Not as convenient as someone who can play with a mouse and keyboard of course or those with a console controller - I've tried and I can't at the end we all get the same game and currently it's just not worth it.
It's trying to be different things to different types of players and isn't as great as it should be if it could decide on one shameless identity.

  • @marcwolvertonphotography2423

I would very much like to see the ability to scrap or recycle engineered modules; but I'd love to see an auction house for materials and engineered modules too; but it's PowerPlay restricted & make/model restricted. Grades 1, 2, & 3 are restricted to make, Grades 4 & 5 and Experimental are Make & Model restricted So I can get 6A Thrusters with Dirty Drive at Grade Three from a Dropship and put them on a Gunship; but when they go to Grade 4, they can only be used on the Dropship. Also, the auction houses for Imperial, Alliance & Federal Space are all different, in order to access all 3, it has to be on a Fleet Carrier or Jameson Memorial. I think that would keep things usable and make sense in-game.

Even seemingly simple things like the SCO drive are already showing the immense possibility for new gameplay vectors, and while I was concerned about pay2win creeping in, I think they've handled it as well as anyone possibly could; nothing that can be bought outclasses what a veteran can acheive in a fully engineered Adder. The future of the bubble is looking bright right now.

There has always been this possibility but it has taken far too long with far too little content of substance. Elite was about stories that players could indulge in. I'm not, however, super happy with the move to make Sirius FSDs completely obsolete overnight. I said before that the SCO drives should either come in A rating OR be engineerable, not both. Now that they're both, there's zero reason to ever use a normal FSD. They're just clutter in the outfitting menu now, right with E rated hull refs and C rated internals.

I see no reason to- not all my ships need to travel very far and some rarely leave their hangars so I'm not going to spend a ridiculous amount of time and effort engineering 16 new drives. Maybe one or two ships will get it first, then others may get upgraded later. Some I won't need to. Nobody says it's necessary to "grind out the materials to engineer every ship again" as some seem to think.

Any non-A-rated SCO FSDs are potentially bugged as their stats are all over the place, e.g. B-rated is not heavier and not any more durable than A-rated, D-rated is the same as B-rated only lighter, making the latter useless straight away, and the C-rated, that was in the game since 2 weeks, should have the same stats as non-SCO C-rated FSD but added overdrive and 0.2 or around max-fuel-per-jump added, but it's nowhere resembling the Sirius module.

One neat thing about the new paid ships is that even a new player who can't pay for them (or isn't sure yet to sink more money on the game) still serves them, by showing what modules and ships are interesting for that type of activity, being an indirect introduction to ship configuration without the need of a tutorial.
About the scrapping, I don't believe that's a good idea.
That could cause slight problems with the storage limits (unless FDev lifts or drastically increases them), or just cause a player to have to cycle between scrapping and engineering and keeping an eye on levels. That feels too much micromanagement through screens and menus for me (unless the changes above are taken before that). Worst part is deciding how to approach that from a balance perspective, since it's unlikely FDev tracks how many rolls were needed for each part to reach the point where they are. This results in one of three situations depending on the material return rate: a very good roll could mean a higher return of materials (if the return rate is high); return rates are low enough to prevent that to the point that the scrapping system feels like a such a shortchange that after interacting with it once to change FSDs, no one is ever going to interact with it again; or, eliminate randomness from rolls (which fits their description of making it so there is less variation on engineering) and make the returns from scrapping fixed (still could lead to people feeling shortchanged if the amount of rolls is too low).
Putting a mechanic on a game that is designed to not feel rewarding and will only be used by players extremely sparingly feels like a bad design decision. That would also kill one of the most interesting uses of scrapping itself, which is to test out builds without having to guess what will work. Efficient Beam Lasers are nice on distributor power but you overestimated your capacity of keeping under 500m from the target? Scrap for a full return and try another engineering.
It would make more sense to rebuild the engineering system in a way that allows easier exchange of engineering configurations without the extra grind. Maybe by making it so unlocking the grades for each type requires a way large amount of materials (compared to engineering one module) but allow that engineering to be applied with only credits going forward. Balancing that would be easier, since FDev already knows what is the acquisition rate of materials in the playerbase. All left is to crunch numbers into what is a feasible time frame to get a particular one to G5, and set those targets. Doing it like this would end the need for scrapping, since you're not throwing out materials anymore, you're throwing out credits. Will give players a slight bad taste at the start, sure, but long time players have the stocks necessary and means to acquire materials fast in order for none of that bad taste to actually matter in the long run. And new players won't even have to know what "rolls" or "95% is enough, don't spend another 5 rolls just for that shiny 100%" means.
Better to remove the bullet as a whole than trying to break it into fragments and remove them bit by bit.
