- A dear friend introduced me to #EskimoCallboy and I was immediately won over! Could they reinvigorate the #Metalcore genre and bring it to a wider audience? If you're a fan of this kind of music, what do you think about Eskimo Callboy? What are you general thoughts on more "comedic" bands, do you hold them up to the same standards?

What do you think of Eskimo Callboy?
Not my cup of tea. They're no Clown Core that's for sure, who by the way if you are unaware of you should definitely check out. Would love to get your take on their song Computers. The bridge in that song still gives me goosebumps when it hits. It might be the chorus and not the bridge though. I'm not really sure what the form is on the song. Maybe I should just call it the 'C' part.
This song is basically disco feel good music alternating with metalcore bits and I think it works. I like it. 👍🏻
The aerobic class in the video strongly reminds me of/seems to be a parody of the video of Call on Me by Eric Prydz.
Love a good parody and they are great at it. Not a Metal Core fan to be honest, more in to rock and heavy metal but appreciate this sort of tomfoolery. Great video 👍.
Love your videos, but It's not really for me, the music of theirs I've checked out is pretty generic and uninspired sounding, fun music videos though!
WHEN IS THE DARKNESS COMING TO OKLAHOMA????
Love these so much. Could you listen to "Turnstile" next please
Second this!
yes pleasee turnstile is awesome!!
They got guitar solos as well
'Glow on' Is mint!
Please sir
The Gunther reference has made my day. Nobody talks about Gunther anymore!!!
I watched Pump It followed by We Got the Moves. Both were highly entertaining. Great videos in terms of their production, choreography, thematic concepts etc. Not a genre I am familiar with but good to know that it exists. I like that they do not take themselves too seriously yet are sincere about the musicality.
hypa hypa!
@@deadweightt You're pretty and I like ya!😂
Dear Justin's Prrrrrrrroducer, if you find the time please let Justin know I think it's amazing how healthy and happy he looks and this channel is a bastion of musical appreciation. I have been a fan for many years and I subscribed early on in this journey. Don't stop never not stopping.
Loving these videos mate, you’re getting me through a pretty dull self-isolation at the mo.
In terms of guitar music : Molly Payton is a great new artist with some great indie revivalist choons like Honey and In Your Arms. Worth a listen I think
Loving Electric Callboy (changed their name due to Eskimo being a derogatory name to some native northerners). I find that they are quite good as well as hysterical. Elizabeth from The Charismatic Voice did a great reaction to We Got the Moves - it was really entertaining.
Never heard of them but instantly love them after watching a couple of vids of theirs, Cheers chief.
Thanks Justin. Now band of the moment for me. Can't get enough of it!
Eskimo callboy is my favorite current band. Everything they have put out recently has been on repeat in my playlists. Love your thoughts on the track and couldn't agree more 👍
Thank-you so much for introducing me to eskimo callboy! I haven't laughed so much in ages!
One of my favorite bands at the moment can't wait to see them on tour.
Thanks for linking the original video. these always make me want to check out the subject.
I saw these in September they were absolutely amazing live, so much energy and fun
My brother sent me this video. That’s the best part about songs and videos like this. It gets people excited to share it. Good for a listen and good for a laugh.
Good vid, surprised you haven't done a vid on Steel Panther yet though. ;)
Originally metalcore was a mixture of metal and hardcore punk, hence the -core
Yeah, I was confused when he was talking about it.
Yeah his exposure to metalcore is pretty narrow I think, so that definition was based on a pretty narrow grouping. Like, I consider Veil of Maya metalcore and I consider Trivium metalcore, so very much not fitting of his definition haha
Yeah, sadly he really doesn't know what he is talking about. For example the "disco parts" are part of the genre, but very marginal. Most metalcore songs don't have electronic music in them. That's why eskimo callboy on wikipedia is also considered "electrocore", because this amount of electronic sound is really unusual for the genre. Or that metalcore takes itself very serously... So first of all eskimo callboy has been making music for like 10 years. That's a lot of time. Or we could mention stick stickly from attack attack, which is loved (or hated) partly ironically and which was pretty much the base for metalcore around 2010. Also, today maybe most metalcore musicians are serious about the genre, but earlier it was a really fun genre, often with party videos and such. And what is considered a young genre? It's like 30 years old (if we count the early stages, which were somewhat different).
@@nothere941 Even Killswitch Engage is classed as metalcore! such a silly genre definition.
@@peterp2195 Atilla the original party core band. Now they are partymetalcoredeathcoresomething. It's metal at the end of the day.
I really dig how "again" in the intro song clips your mic every single time
These guys crack me up every time they drop a new video.
Love you work and you inspired me to take up guitar (even if it did take me till I was 40) 🙈. Permission to Land is one if me all time top 10 albums. Always drooling for more stuff from you 🤘
Hi Justin (or master video producer), I love the videos and format. Quite entertaining and insightful. Have you considered having any musician guests, whether from the Darkness or any other band friends? I’d love to see a positive musical conversation with the same detailed analysis breaking down either music genres or specific bands/songs. Cheers!
Loving the videos Justin, these sound good I would really love to see your take on Meshuggah. One of my favourites!
Now this is a video I wasn't expecting! Glad it did.
So glad I found this channel. Thank CZcams algorithms and of course thank you Justin 🤘
Hey Justin! Been loving your content, it's always interesting to hear your opinions. I would love to hear what you have to say about Dance Gavin Dance! They are what I'd call a post-hardcore (some might call them metalcore but I think that's a loose fit) band from Sacramento that has really innovated their own niche in their scene. They have been in the game for nearly 2 decades and their sound has evolved many times over the years. But they have been at the top of the scene since almost day one. Cheers!
Great shout, DGD are amazing
Cant see myself getting into metal core or eskimo callboy , but ill still leave a short message of appreciation for when you do pick out a bad apple of a track coz I love the way you say things about bands your not keen on
Loving your work, Justin. Now, straighten that bloody picture!
watched their video we got the moves, i think its my new fave thing,, thanks Justin for showing these guys to me
Love your videos! Can you please make one about Busted? Both their older material and also new music after they reunited in 2016. Would love to hear your take!
They are very entertaining, great stuff. 🤘
can be fun to look around youtube for new and crazy bands on occasion, found some really good ones from different places, baby metal, band-maid, kontrust, eskimo callboy, etc...., i think pump it video is sort of a part 2 for hypa hypa
Justin, you've introduced me to several bands that I've never heard of before, many of which really didn't do anything for me (I guess that I'm jaded), but that really isn't the point, as my mind still has some openness available and I still like to be introduced to new things, even at my advanced age. I did watch the Hypa Hypa video and found it amusing. Keep, up the good work as I do appreciate it. For me, if I find some worthy music, I purchase it. I've recently picked up some Greta Van Fleet from their latest album and a selection of tracks from Skullcrusher, which is a bit of a misnomer in name only.
I love them. Heard they were changing their name and that they are taking request for a new name. Love you too Justin.
Will check them out once this video finished.
Funny that I found Eskimo Callboy through a friend with a similar pitch.
Also, the only time I got to see the Darkness live was when you guys were opening for Lady Gaga about 10 years ago in Riga, Latvia. I was one of the three people in the crowd who knew you and you looked me dead in the eye as I was singing along to Love on the Rocks.
I got to meet Gaga after the show and told her to let you guys know that you should come back to Latvia and do a full The Darkness show.
You guys made that concert so much better for me, loved it!
I saw the darkness start for gaga in London honestly if I could go back I would but get closer tickets best concert ever and extremely rare to essentially get a gig from two of your favourite artists on the one night ❤️
@@caitlinerin heck yeah, it felt like such a pleasant surprise to experience the Darkness, good times!
@@caitlinerin I was at the far end of the fan zone when they came on but after a couple songs, I moved as close to the stage as I could. Definitely a pleasant surprise to see The Darkness live. Like you said - we got a gig from two amazing artists on one night, I absolutely loved it
Justin has the most calming voice
Wow, just checked a few of their vids, theyre great!
Since when did Metalcore combine disco with anything? Admittedly I stopped following the genre around 2010 but it was always a combination of metal riffing and tempo with hardcore breakdowns, gang vocals, and aesthetic.
It really had electronic music sometimes, but not in the degree he's talking about. It happens, but it's a marginal thing in the genre. He just doesn't know metalcore well.
Gang vocals and aesthetic? what? The majority of 2010 metal core has dancy beats in it. AA, Attack Attack! just to name a few.
It depends what era of metalcore you get introduced to I think.
'early' metalcore like Killswitch, As I Lay Dying, All That Remains etc had no disco/dance stuff but 'modern' metalcore like (new) Bring Me The Horizon, (newest) Architects, (old) Asking Alexandria does have some electronic/dance stuff in it. If you've only listened to the modern stuff (like it seems Justin has) you'll just assume it all have the electronic/dance stuff in.
@@TheBanana93 didn't I say I stopped listening to it in 2010? Maybe even a year or two earlier. I played the genre around 2003-2007, fell out of love with metal and didn't start listening again until a couple years back. Back when I was still listening to metalcore Killswitch, Unearth, As I lay dying, etc etc were still the prominent sound.
Admittedly gang vocals were more prominent in deathcore than straight up metalcore, but yeah I probably truly stopped listening to anything not already in my playlists around 2007 and stopped listening almost entirely by 2010.
It's hard to even recognise all that synth heavy stuff as metalcore and not some new subgenre.
Yes! I love their vids
A friend asked me years ago,"does humour belong in Metal?", to which I said hell yes! The first Metal song I ever heard that fused Metal with Disco was Why Can The Bodies Fly by Pungent Stench, and I still love that song. Too many bands to list here, but one that I think don't get enough recognition are Macabre, those guys are awesome! The first time I heard their album Sinister Slaughter, I was so blown away by how brutal and how hilarious they were at the same time, and the drummer, Dennis The Menace is insanely fast, fused with their nursery rhyme melodies. So on your recommendation, I'm gonna check out Eskimo Callboy.🤘
Also Try: Austrian Death Machine
It's As I Lay Dyings Tim Lambesis, lead singers side project that is completely Terminator/Arnold Schwarzenegger themed. It's hilarious and the riffs are awesome!
humour in Metal is a must, bands take themselves far too seriously most of the time and suffer badly for it - here's Maiden stiching up their manager with a comedy B-side from back at their peak; apparently they didn't tell him about it until after the records were cut which he was far from impressed about LOL czcams.com/video/TO5sCTn3bR4/video.html&ab_channel=IronMaiden
I'm pretty sure the book where they get all these goofy band names is the same place guitar effects pedal makers get the names for their products.
Thanks Justin. I love the Darkness, I love steel panther and now I love Eskimo callboy!
Justin! Great video! Speaking of mother tongues I’d love for you to do a video on bands that make music that’s primarily not sung in English.
My favourites would be Maximum The Hormone from Japan, Sigur Ros from Iceland, Einstürzende Neubauten from Germany and Radwimps from Japan
Add to this The Hu from Mongolia, Alien Weaponry from New Zealand
love your channel Justin, I think its time for me to ring your bell
One of the best bands live you could ever hope to see, right up there with the likes of Maiden and Darkness in terms of ability to both deliver a solid live performance and a finely crafted sateg show that gets everyone involved. Seriously, go see them, it's a thing of beauty especially when they bust out costumes for the videos
Love that t-shirt!
Thank you. It's from my company Pläm Pläm. Link is in the description now.
The Steel Panther of Metalcore? haha great vid Justin!
I like that progression you've added to your theme tune but I'd like to hear the run go down an extra semi-tone on the last chord. It's your theme tune, you do what you like. That's just what I hear.
I say it should go UP, no less than 50,000 semitones
I recently found out about Eskimo Callboy and I love them. I would love for you to check out The Cribs, they are a rock band from Wakefield and I feel like you would like them
hey justin what back in the day bands are you into? ride, the stone roses, pop will eat itself, the la's? any of them ?
!THEY ARE TRYING TO ENTER EUROVISION!
Eskimo callboy are excellent,
they’ve never taken themselves too seriously, and it’s actually really refreshing to see a band in a genre that we have our roots doing so well. It’s absolutely healthy for the wider scene too! It’s great to be able to feel such joy and laughter whilst listening to a genre which typically deals with themes of depression, anxiety and self loathing!
New, fresh, exiting and fun! Just what we need in these bleak times!
Astounding
NO! GOD NO!
Oh god yes 🔥 🙌
@@NebulaStateUK WTF wrong with you? Eurovision? That's FUCKED!
@@DMSProduktions it’s massive for bands especially those in our genre! Success trickles down! If they can get more ears and eyes on electronicore it can only be a positive thing buddy! 🔥 👽
@@NebulaStateUK NOTHING positive EVER comes out of Eurovision! It is CRINGE central! Win EV, end your career! The ONLY exception to this was ABBA!
IDK why my country attempts to enter it! We aren't even IN the EU!
Most of the musos here just treat it for the the joke it is!
I already think Eskimo Callboy are wicked and then you bring up GÜNTHER aswell...I'm sold! 😅😍 ...and yes, Tutti Frutti Summer Love is a banger! 😄👌
Kind regards from a not at all biased Swede 😄🇸🇪✌
I’d love to know what you think of Primus’ 1991 masterpiece ‘Sailing the Seas of Cheese’ Justin. Absolute madness. You’d surely appreciate the complexity and inane content of this album.
I have nothing meaningful to contribute but would like to compliment your beautifully fantastical shirt 👌
Thanks a lot lovely! It's from my company Pläm Pläm. Link is now in the description. Cheers 👽
the thing with the genre is the powerful lyrics because arguably today's metal/metalcore/hardcore whatever you want to call it tackles more of the worlds more wicked problems than any other genre, making it quite hard in my opinion to make a joke of and thus being the reason the fans may take it so seriously. Please Justin have a listen to something like "Architects- These colours don't run". I'd really love to hear your take on both the lyrics and the music itself.
I'd love to get your opinion on the band sleep token with the song the love you want. It's hard to describe their sound seeing as they pull from alot of different genres and manage to sound so unique
Sleep Token and Eskimo Callboy are two of my constant listens lately, Vessel's voice is something else
Reminds me I really need to put more work into my Testo-bod.
Love Eskimo Callboy! Hypa Hypa is such a great tune and video!
Always love a good Günther reference
Many years ago there was a metalcore parody by Brian Posehn called Metal by Numbers.
This band got me through 2021.
Sounds like Rammstein meets Pee Wee's Playhouse. The lyrics are fun and videos are terrific. Not my scene but I salute the creativity!
Hi Justin, any chance Red Light Fever will ever make it to streaming services?
Hey Justin. Just found this channel. Also love your work. Could you look at polyphia goat. Why it works how is it different etc. You dig to hear your view.
I really like your t-shirt chap.
Thanks a lot! The art-company is called Pläm Pläm. It's mentioned in the description now!
Would love to see your thoughts on Mammoth WVH - don’t back down
To hark what you said Justin about having to be good at what you do to have fun with a genre check out 12 Foot Ninja. One of the most proificient bands and they have a sense of humour. I can't give a genre because...well you'd just have to listen. I recommend "Coming For You" or "One Hand Killing"
They are now called Electric Callboy and have been since around early 2020.
Great band, check out their set from Summer Breeze Festival....great fun!
Btw..i'm 56 and rocknmetal all genres for 40+ years!
*Summer Breeze 2022
*Since 2022 name change
i was introduced by the u tube algo to these guys. OMG
Definitely thought that phone was gonna hit the deck
I live in Germany about 20 minutes away from where these guys come from. They’re local heroes that ‘done good’. I prefer Rammstein but my 25 year old daughter loves them. I guess it’s her generations music, although I’ve brought her up right - she loves The Darkness too 🤩👍
Rammstein are on another league than this band!
Great video man, thoughtful as always, but I think your understanding of Metalcore might be a little off. Metalcore doesn't combine 90s disco/electronica with metal. This isn't a dig by the way, just highlighting something.
It's a combination of Metal and Hardcore as in hardcore punk not hardcore electronica. Peak metalcore was late 2000's/early 2010s with bands like As I Lay Dying, Killswitch Engage, August Burns Red. Modern metalcore has embraced some electronic elements but not from 90's music. If you want a good example of modern metalcore then listen to Spiritbox who are huge right now.
Eskimo Callboy are dudes like me who grew up listening to great metalcore bands like Killswitch Engage ect. but then injected their own unique sense of humour into the genre coupled with pop sensibilities. It's fantastic and I'm glad they're seeing such incredible success! They're also really well liked in the modern metalcore scene, plenty of us have a sense of humour. Thanks for shining a light on them and I hope they get into (and win!) Eurovision!
*Please* check out the Blessed By A Broken Heart songs 'Move Your Body' and 'Doin It For The Rock'. They were a hardcore band then discovered 80s synths. They sound a bit like Eskimo Callboy. It has cheesy riffs, metal vocals and big rock choruses. You'll love it, I promise 🤙😁🤙
Worked for Eric Prydz "Call On Me"! (Dad rock sample extreme, respect to Steve Winwood)!
Justin whatever you do, don’t allow silly words in this comment section to sway how you respond and initially review anything, the majority of us love your honest opinions and the way you subtly and very cleverly deliver them. That is what makes these videos. I wouldn’t even consider those who take this seriously enough to say any of what may make you hesitate in future videos. Keep doing this because for fellow musicians and fans these videos can really make our day. Thanks again. Luke.
Awesome, they’re a cross between Steps and Slipknot! Love em!
Too start with metalcore never really included much synths, sure some does, but it was initially a mix hardcore and metal. Bands like killswitch engage and parkway drive etc
Hey Jus, I just listened to a cool song and thought I'd fire it in here.. for your personal enjoyment perhaps, not necessarily a review.. try 'New England' by Kid Kapichi and Bob Vylan. Lyrically and topically its interesting.
Hey Justin, I know you're really into dad rock. Please check out a band called Nestor. They're brilliant AOR and have really catchy tracks!
I love you man.
Metal Core is a Boss pedal, isn’t it? And now yet another genre. Just what the world needed 😕
Remember HMV back in the day? “Rock&Pop”.
Thank you for reminding me to like, I always forget to do that 👍
I'll be honest, I was prepared to fuck it off and wait for the next installment of JHRA. But I paused, followed the link and watched We Got the Moves. But it was Pump It that sold me. I'm in.
Not anywhere close to my brand of music but like the man said, they have to real good to pull this off that well.
Bit like Les Dawson on the piano. You know he has to play well to do that funny!
I like this channel and disagree with all of those comments and detractors in the other video.
Metal taking itself too seriously? Will wonders never cease!
I came for the opening *theme song. I stayed for the great content. 👍
You would get a kick out of Dog Fashion Disco. They convey so much in their song/lyric structure.
A little off your format probably but would love a video on Eric Nally and Foxy Shazam as well as your writing with Eric for Meatloaf.
I had the same teacher as Justin at Kirklees College.
There's something about Justin that reminds me of Russell Brand who's uploads I also watch. Dunno if it's in the personality, the vibe, but there's something 🤔
Tutti frutti summer love!!! You are a legend! Seriously I laugh a lot!!!
what you are describing is electronicore. metalcore is a crossover of (usually extreme) metal and hardcore, of which there are now a ton of subgenres like electronicore
"...Venga Boys at worst." How dare you, sir? How *dare* you?
I love Electric Callboy with the new singer. The older stuff was darker (Nice Boi), but good.
Don't let the fuckers get you down, it's been very enjoyable and interesting listening to what you have to say.
Where did you buy that fantastic t-shirt?

That was class what a laugh they are good
hypa hypa made me laugh until i cried the first time i saw the video.

Metal combined with dance. Sounds like euro vision kind of thing.
