WHAT'S GOING ON, MALAYSIA? Education: Enlighten vs Stupid with Prof Tajuddin Rasdi

  • Is our education system preparing students for enlightenment - or stupidity? I speak to Prof Tajuddin Rasdi on this episode of "WHAT'S GOING ON MALAYSIA?" and he has opinions that might be considered controversial. An esteemed educator and columnist his point of view developed from a life time of practical and theoretical study have resulted in just as many praises as brickbats. But one thing can be guaranteed - his desire to see Malaysians make smarter choices is unflinching. And it all starts with education.
We covered everything : from critical thinking (or the lack of it) to the logic and practicality of building grandiose mosques. You may not like what he has to say but you cannot deny his brilliant mind and thought process.

Wow! That's the word that came into my mind after watching this. I sincerely thank both Harith and Prof Tajuddin for this affirmation that it's never wrong to ask questions and be different. I am a parent, I think as a parent we shld also encourage our kids to ask questions and not putting a stop to it just because we were taught not to. Education starts at home. Instead of just relying on teachers to fill in that position, I think as parents, encouraging our kids to think out of the box is really important as well. Thanks again to both of you for sharing this conversation with us.

Many graduated from other courses from universities and choosing teaching line just because they want a government job or they cannot get a job that they studied for. There are so many of us from private universities with B.ED but we do not get a chance to teach in government schools. So teaching job is not for those with B.Ed but more for those who did other courses. How can you get real teachers with passion?

This is a very interesting conversation that I find missing since completing my PhD in NZ years ago. In western universities, PhD students are taught to ask questions, to see things in various perspectives and contexts, to read and read from primary sources, to critique what they read or heard. Whereas in Asian universities, students may not have the luxury of asking unusual questions or say things that are controversial for fear of being ridiculed.

I haven't had the chance to study overseas but I am very privileged to have had the chance to study in UKM's pre-uni foundation in science course (ASASIpintar) and that is the only place that gave me a taste of what "university" ought to be thanks to our director Prof Noriah. We were encouraged to ask questions all the time, even challenging and criticising our lecturers (in a proper way ofc) was regarded as something positive. The assignments were very different and quite bizarre as well and we had a lot of freedom to be creative and to think outside the box. No "one way" of doing the task. Naturally, all the students became active in classes and loved to volunteer and try new things. Sadly, this ofc wasnt the case for the other degree courses in UKM.

It relates so much to me as I too have a growing young family and struggling with the daily decisions that we make as a "muslim" family. Hearing him has made me even more certain of my decisions and given me a push to continue my journey to push forward to learn more and make better decisions.
It is the thinking that our knowledge is enough to justify that we are making the right decisions; but also understanding that there is many more views, opinions and TRUTHS that may proof that we are wrong.

I watched the show live. These are my comments:
    1. The session didnt dig deep into the the issues afflicting education in malaysia.
    2. Issues like the role of english, vernacular schools, is our education system meeting the needs of the country at present etc etc
    3. There was a lack of structure in the conversation. For example
    a. What are the problems afflicting the education system (which the prof did touch on)
    b. What is the solution that the Prof will suggest in remaking the education system (which the Prof has in fact announced in a news report some time back). Sadly this wasnt touched at all
    4. At any rate this was a much needed conversation. And we should have more such discussions and hopefully delve deeper in future discussions

We need more real intellectuals like you in our education system Prof...Sad to think that many in system seem to be deciding what knowledge is suitable for us and what is not,...but ironically, asking us to think out of the box and to be critical thinkers in this 21st century. Unlike the few wonderful educators like you out there, Prof..there are still many who subscribe to the 'ask-questions-and-upset the professor' rule which drowns any inquisitive intentions in student's mind. Those who succeed to filter this stand out..but many succumb, and at the end of the day, are unable to spread their wings beyond...or even within the shores, as they have become like horses with blinkers..Thank you Harith for this session..Thank you Prof for your views..God bless..

Joseph Kittingan became too vocal in asking what has been the federal governments commitment to Sabah and the Sabah pribumi.
Joseph was locked up under ISA the moment he reminded Peninsula rhat Sabah is not a state under Malaysia but an equal psrtner.

This is an eye-opening talk by Prof Tajuddin. I had attended several talks by him whether online or 'physical' conference. He points out the 'rigid' education causes the way a student thinks and learns things, which's made them focus only on how to get good grades in school or university. I have been through this kind of education system for almost 30 years (from primary till post-graduate). Lack of critical thinking will impact our lives, especially in our careers. You can't ask your lecturer or teacher to help you to solve your problem especially your work-related problem.

Whenever I challenge my students to think differently in college, it is always difficult to get someone to respond. It is not totally dead though. Students from international schools are different. If the current education system changes, things may change. Democracy in its basic principle is scattering of power so that no one man can make arbitrary decisions.
One capable minister will not be able to change the system. He needs the cooperation of others.
Nor will 112 YBs who are in agreement.

Thank you Harith and Dr Tajuddin for the discussion. That was a wide topic covering intellectual conversation.
Based on the comments here, it is clear who are more enlightened by the “non-bumis” and “non-muslims” benefits seconding opinions by a Muslim Malay scholar.
One aspect that was not highlighted here and in most other similar discussions on Malaysian’s multi racial sociodemographic issues, is the ultimate root of the fear and prejudices felt by most Muslim Bumiputera and how to eliminate them without cauding legal implications to those who are actually still causing them openly now.
All those issues discussed in discusdions such as this, would be less occuring and more time could be spent on many other positive actions and developments.
The fear issues still exists due to the personal bad practices by a number of the Muslim Bumis Parliament or State Hall Members; which is not related to Islam or Bumi status, (which actually practiced too by many muslim non Bumis, non muslim bumi or non muslims members of both authorities) most Bumis regardless of muslims or not have lost their understanding of having the pride and the ethics of being Bumis themselves.
This is caused by the horrendous, continuous bombardment by media as well as propaganda by the irresponsible Non bumis who are zealously greedy on conquering whatever natural resources this small Malaya Peninsular has in the name of justice for non bumis Malaysian, that they purposely ignore many very relevant parts in our most honourable Constitution of Malaysia and go against them openly.
Those irresponsible non Bumis and their associates keep hoarding the media and any means possible, to indoctrinate the minds of whole Malaysian and non Malaysians globally, especially the Bumis themselves, that Bumis especially Muslim Malays as lazy, subsidized minded, uncivilised, racist, and other self-depreciating dogmas which are untrue.
Those irresponsible non Bumis hide the facts that it is the Constitution and the respecting others, tolerant and friendly nature of Malays which stemmed from faith in Sunnah Sidna Rasulullah ﷺ, that gives the non bumis such privilege to prosper in this country with their born ethnicities culture untouched from birth till death, since the 16th century till now; unlike in all other Asian countries and most other countries in this world.
Muslim Malays are not against any goodwill efforts for the progress or development of Malaysia as well as those who decide to make Malaysia their homes.
Be known! It is the Muslim Malays who first come to forefront, putting away own comfort or even safety for anything that would protect Malaysia whenever there is calamities and help others who are in need regardless their religions and ethnicities or financial status.
