Is it true that Vernacular Schools are the main cause of disunity in Malaysia?

  • A professor, who himself is a Chinese Malaysian, accused the vernacular schools including the Chinese schools as the main cause of disunity in Malaysia. The professor even accused the Chinese of insulting the Malays and Bahasa Melayu. I do not support this accusation and I list many incidents in Malaysia that has far reaching consequences. 1. The Hadi Awang insult 2. The Sanusi desecration of Hindu Shrine and Chinese Deity 3. Tun M Pendatang rhetoric 4. The Kampung Baru Cina and Bak-kut teh issue 5. The threats to Ngeh and Nga DAP MPs 6. The public school insult to other race incidents 7. The Muslim only Laundromat issue 8. the Taman Austin beating during Friday Prayers 10. The increase of Malays in Chinese Vernacular Schools.

I'm very convinced that the good professor has spoken out of embarrassment for his own kind as one of the educated and moderate Malays who form a good proportion of the majority race in this country. As a Chinese Malaysian who has seen better days since the nation achieved independence from the British, I sometimes feel that the Chineae here were better off coexisting with the colonial masters. We may not have enjoyed the best of everything the British could provide the colonists but we were more civilly regarded by our colonial rulers. It's really sad that after having played our part as equal partners in achieving independence the non-malay minorities, especially the Chinese, were so easily blamed for anything found offensive to Malay culture or their religion.

In the old days, with the existence of vernacular schools (chinese and indian), the rakyat mixed freely and was united. Then came Mahathir, changed the medium of instruction to Malay and the NEP - the country's education went down the drain where we were no longer competent in the English language and competitive against other countries. The politicians and extremist religious teachers with racist remarks were left unchecked. If this issue is not arrested, it will get worse.
On the other side, Singapore must be laughing at us - let the Malaysian politicians continue to fight over petty issues (english/malay, dressing, heritage etc) while they progress ahead. We should be focussing on the economy and get back on track after all the misappropriation of funds. Other SE Asian countries are catching up if not better than us. I hope the new Madani government will bring about change.

Good day from outside of MY. Not an expert on the UMNOcracy but when reading MY history, racial-religious-related bickering started under Mahathir at a time when MY had achieved a level of economic prosperity.
Once big $$$ came in, the more the political class preached unity, the greater the disunity.
Anwar was not necessarily the most ideal guy but after some time, he probably realized the problem was definitely within and thought there should be a different approach.
The $$$ interests decided Anwar was too dangerous and had to be removed. Furthermore, a significant number of influential people not of Malay-Muslim background, despite their unhappiness with the UMNOcracy, had also benefited in proportionate terms and did not want to rock the boat.
The longer the problem dragged on, the $$$ interests decided they had too much to lose, even if there were only limited reforms. Furthermore, the longer the disunity continued, the stronger the fear of an all-or-nothing outcome.🙄🙄
