  • @letsif
    @letsif Před 3 měsíci +65

I'm 75 and I do HIIT training 3-4 times/wk, but I have been doing this for years, so I can tell when i need more recovery days and act accordingly. I never do the same workouts twice in a row. These exercises vary among hill running and bike hill intervals, rowing machine, kettle bell lifts from floor to above my head, stationary bike bursts, hitting the heavy bag and running on the spot for 60 second intervals, and sometime running stairs in a downtown office building, 18 floors, two steps at a time, elevator down, for 3 sets .But I try to do mostly compound movements, ie. full body motion utilizing many muscle groups at once. So on a slow day when I'm not looking for too much fuss, while watching tv, I'll do sets of 30 second push offs from a chair with handles and just touching my bottom to the seat. This is a compound exercise and is so convenient and effective, just doing it right on the spot. I take walks or jog lightly on alternate days. I do intermittent fasting 16-18 hrs, and eat a mostly vegetarian diet, but including one tin of canned sockeye salmon/wk, one half on one day, the other half 2-3or 4 days later. The other protein sources for me are nuts: walnuts, almonds, brazil nuts for selenium, pumpkin seeds, pecans, etc.. I eat about 10-12 veggies per day, and avocado, sometimes in stir fry with beans in coconut oil. I have some cheddar cheese, almond butter, yogurt with mixed frozen berries, grapefruit juice. I love eggs and make omelettes with most of the veggies. Sometimes veg pasta with veggies. I take 4000-5000 vitamin d3, magnesium, zinc, b6- b12 k2, and vit C. I don't eat sweets or fast burning carbs, I listen to my body and take full day brakes when I feel lethargic. My body knows best. The other thing is, I quit going to the gym and do everything at home. I have a door pull up bar, bike trainer, dumbbells, kettle bell, exercise ball, ab roller, various tension bands and use a walker without the seat attachment for dips. I no longer need the gym to get a full workout. Saves time and money. I never smoked, do drugs of any kind and don't drink. I get high on life and art. I'm not an exercise fanatic, just consciousness. When younger, I over trained with long hard workouts and paid the price in injuries and colds. Hard, long duration workouts compromise the immune system and has the reverse affect of breaking the body down instead of building up, so you can be fit but not healthy, just like Doc Ekberg says. My workouts are short and sweet, or at least short and I feel almost as young as a 30 years old me. Just a little wiser though.

@@Mrs.TJTaylor Your comment caught my eye and thought I would share some of my fasting experiences. Please know, I am not boasting nor am I preaching Jesus & The Holy Spirit. I am openly sharing some experiences for your encouragement & consideration.
      1) To date, I have been fasting, 14 years, for spiritual reasons rather than personal health. (learning of the health benefits by watching Dr. Ekberg)
      2) The first fast I did was a 30 day "Media Fast" (no TV, radio, internet, books, magazines, etc.), which helped to build the ability to say no to my flesh.
      3) My initial fasting from food, water only, was 1 day a week for 4 months
      4) After 4 months of weekly fasting I decided to do a 3 day, water only fast. Truthfully, it wasn't difficult at all.
      5) I have done eight 7 day water only fasts, for me, day 5 is the most difficult.
      6) Again, I am not boasting when I say I have also done three longer fasts. 15 days, 23 days, 29 days.
      7) I have a close personal friend who has done three 40 day water only fasts. To be transparent, the last two required a hospital visit to recover.
*In conclusion*, for medical & health reasons, I would suggest fasting no longer than 3 days. That said, fasting for spiritual reasons, is impossible in our own human strength, requiring The Holy Spirit of The Triune God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob.
Again, this is not the place nor my intent, to preach the Gospel of Jesus, I am simply sharing my experiences regarding fasting.

      @@Hippy2021 Hi Mary ,
Yes isometrics are a very good technique. I do reps plus a static hold with the isobow - you will find that your strength improves . There are some very good training vids on YT .
      If I could recommend a regime -
      (1) overhead press 10 x reps plus a static hold of between 7 to seconds .
      (2) incline press 10 x reps ............
      (3) bench press 10 x reps ..............
      (4) decline press 10 x reps ..............
      (5) dips 10 x reps ............
These can all be done in the standing position. After a time you can increase the reps from 10 to 12 ,as can do with the static hold . Try not to hold your breath while doing exercises.
Sometimes I will only do static holds - all is good as it’s a very versatile piece of equipment.
You can look up if you wish is the Harry Wong workout ( he was a student of Bruce Lee ) .
Any info on isometrics and such - just ask me .
Good luck and good health Mary .

I watch and follow your advice often and really get it. I’m 75 and worry about HIIT but I do it anyhow. Let me mention a recovery to my back. 5 years ago I was a mess and decided to change. Well I thought running would be good BUT if I tried to jog fast my spine felt like it was a part full roll of quarters (vertebrae, and cartilage just smashing together) so I didn’t try that anymore. After about 3 years of real food and low carbs I realized my back was feeling solid, now I run fast and the action is reviving my muscles coordination and I love that people staring at me when I blast past them. :)

Is it natural that people get essential components of human diet from a mountain on the other side of the world? 🤦‍♀️ There is absolutely no advantage only that Himalayan salt is sometimes a bit less pure ("more minerals" 🤦‍♀️) and more expensive. I'm 55 yo, 160lbs, 5 foot 7, and have never been fitter than I am today. For the past two years I've been exercising almost daily with an average of 2+hrs a day, which is made up of weight work one day, then cardio the other (biking, walking, hiking, boxing a bag, swimming). I normally do a full body weight workout, but will depend on how much I worked my legs the day before. I do abdominal exercises almost every day. I started this routine because I was retired due to ill health and became quite sedentary and got really bored and sick of that lifestyle, plus I was struggling with my mental health. I eat pretty well, but nothing extreme. I just make sure I don't eat much crap and don't over-indulge in anything. I interval fast as well. Sleeping on hot nights is tricky sometimes, but I usually get plenty of sleep (with no job to go to it's easier lol). I'm lucky that I have so much free time, but most people could do at least 30-60 mins a day of something to match what you advise. Now I just have to work out what I want to live longer for.

Dear Dr. Ekberg, first of all, I would like to thank you for your quality content. Coming from not only a healthcare professional but also an athlete, your perspective is particularly interesting for people like me.
When talking about exercise, the usual recommendations refer to weight lifting routines or exercises like running, rope jumping, burpees, etc., but it would be interesting if you could analyze specific sports or disciplines and map these activities with the potential benefits or disadvantages from the health and longevity perspective.
In my case, I'm 51 years old, I've been training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for almost 20 years and currently my training regime is five or six BJJ classes a week (60 to 90 minutes each) including warm-up, drilling (repeating a specific technique to perfect the movements) and high intensity rolling sessions with other BJJ practitioners. Also, I do intermittent fasting, alternating OMAD from Monday to Friday, and 16:8 on the weekends, eating a low carb diet where I include high quality protein and fat, and also low carb vegetables.
It would be great to hear your opinions about BJJ training from the perspective of longevity and health, and also nutrition and lifestyle recommendations.

@@oolala53 low, I didn’t do it to lose weight, just that I heard it was good for general health. I found that a four day fast meant too much weight loss, so now am on a three day fast every three months.

@@phillipoleary2532 Ty. I have tried multiple fasting protocols and honestly, I hated all of them. The last round of a 5-day fast-mimicking ( and I did do multiple day water fasting, never got easy despite all other claims) was about a year ago and I decided not to try it again for a good long while. I never kept off any of the weight that I lost and I found out that over a period of time I lost quite a bit of muscle, which is absolutely not worth it. I was not overweight when I first started any fasting, though I did carry high fat For my weight, but it has remained very steady despite many protocols. I thought maybe if you were heavier, it would’ve made the longer fasting easier, but I guess that’s not related in your case. I think I have to work more on the consistent exercise end. Continued success!

In my church we fast for 24 hours the first Sunday of each month. The money saved from the skipped meals is offered to those in need, which is wonderful itself, but what it does to the body and brain is an added bonus. Win/ Win!

The Didache - Teachings of the Apostles, a very early text exhorts the faithful to fast on Wednesdays and Fridays (sunset Tue/Thu to sunset Wed/Fri). This continues to be practiced in ancient Christian communities in West Asia/the Middle East.

Doc you rarely include rowing or indoor rowers. You’re great at explaining the technical side of things in layman’s terms. Been watching and re-watching your videos for years. I’m going to have to work on doing HIIT on my Concept2. Thanks for all your great videos and information.
