As a kid in the 90s i had a ftm trans "Barbie". Between my sister and I we had a ton of Barbies, one Ken, and some random GI-Joe doll, but some of our games we needed another boy character, so we gave one of our Barbies a gender change. We used electrical tape to bulk out his body to hide his breasts, and gave him a haircut. Gave him the GI-Joe's outfit since it was the best boy outfit we had to cover the fact that he was so taped up. and renamed him. So yeah, trans dolls are not new. Kids adapt their toys as needed. they don't have to wait for an official toy to be released, though the official representation is very much appreciated.

That's so cool! When I was a kid, my aunt and uncle liked giving me an American Girl doll for Christmas. I loved those dolls, but they were all girls, so after several years, I asked for a boy doll. The company didn't make any boy dolls. So my aunt and uncle (who I'm pretty sure are transphobic) bought a girl doll with an androgynous outfit, and cut his hair and eyelashes to make him into a boy. I didn't find out he was trans until much later, but I think it's cool that I have a trans doll. American Girl made their first cis boy doll a few years ago, but I had a boy doll long before that :).

Hey! My friends and I did something similar! Same problem - always getting Barbies (or like, a dozen Help Me Obi Wan Kenobi Princess Leia’s), never getting male dolls. We used paper and tape and sewed our own clothing to get extra male dolls - and if we wanted another female doll, we just modified his clothing. (The Princess Leia action figures were harder to modify, so I ended up …well, full on stealing my bro’s toys, and having extra figures meant we could violently destroy them… )
You know, it never occurred to me that this early history is why I enjoy modifying dolls so much now. (I make custom figures for friends - for example, someone’s black cat was named Darth, so I carefully modified a Darth Vader doll with a Simba doll, fixed the packaging, etc. I used a Funko Pop doll to expand on the joke of my Aussie husband liking Captain America and I made a Captain Australia doll, complete with custom box, etc. Stuff like that.)

I don't think it's occurred to transphobes that someone can put serious thought into a decision, carefully consider it from all angles, and still come to a conclusion that's different to what they would have chosen. It's the aggressive pursuit of normalcy, an implicit insistence that everyone needs to act in the same way and do the same things, and a rejection of any differences from the norm or diversity of thought. A complete inability to empathize with people different from them.

Also how can you know if a barbie doll is Trans? Do you have to make a trans Ken doll have barbies body or something? Or a barbie doll to have Ken's face? The dolls don't have genitals, so if a barbie doll is to be Trans woman, you can't tell if they realy are or not since they will have the exact body as what would be a cis barbie. Trans women do tend to look exactly like cis women to the point that transohobes become accidental allys. So I don't know how you can make a trans barbie unless they have a trans flag for trans pride or its based off a trans person OR barbie got a new friend who's trans. Will say that maybe a trans Ken doll actually culd would as a distinctive way to show that a man is trans if if they have top surgury. Would laugh if parents complain about trans Ken when it's literitly just Ken with painted scars. Like what's sexual about it? They don't have dicks or vaginas.

@@bigboomer1013 My trans 'barbie' doll (a cheap knock off version) was a typical female doll that had had the hair chopped off by some other child, so it was just a short haired female doll that I gave a boy's name and dressed in trousers instead of skirts or dresses. It had also been snapped in half and my childminder was going to throw it out but let me keep it. So I also imagined that this doll was disabled and in a wheelchair. Kids will find ways of exercising their imaginations, and adapt to what toys are available to them.

@@SevCaswell This. I had a "fake" Barbie with darker skin, grey hair and no legs below the knee and another one who was bald. The former I imagined was a disabled person and the latter a woman with cancer after chemo or a punk rocker or even an evil scientist, depending on my lil' self's mood. Kids can be a lot smarter (and way more empathetic) than adults think. Having those two alongside a few others (scarred, missing eyes, fingers, white hair, bald patches...) who were "different" didn't "confuse" me or whatever, if anything, it made me practice my imagination and see how big the world is from a child's perspective. I also treated them all equally. Which can't be said for the real world sadly...

    • @booklanerecommendations
      @booklanerecommendations Před 11 měsíci +6

I don't know if I did this with my Barbies, since I used them as different characters on different days so they weren't always the same person. But my American Girl dolls were definitely poly! I only had one boy doll (they didn't have boy dolls yet, but my aunt and uncle had made me one by altering a 'girl' doll, which is kind of funny since they're probably transphobes and they made me a trans doll), and I had a pretty heteronormative mindset as a kid, so I didn't think of having the girl dolls be romantic partners with each other. So instead, my dolls were poly and two or three of the girls got to date the boy while the others remained single.

Open letter to the lovely trans community:
Thank you for being kind to me while I was asking questions. Thank you for directing me to good sources for research. You had no need or obligation to validate your existence, and yet you did. It was enough to push me down the right track to read the right articles and understand so much better. And also to understand that one of the reasons it never made sense to me is because I myself was genderfluid and just assumed everyone felt like that.
Being given a chance helped me to learn so much about the people around me--trans and cis--as well as myself.
To anyone who's currently transphobic, it's not impossible to change. Read those articles. Listen to trans voices. And really challenge yourself on WHY you feel the need to be transphobic. I doubt many of you are trans yourselves; I understand that I was more of an exception than a rule. But there is so much you can learn from this amazing community, and so many things that we've been taught forever that just have been harmful to everyone.

A lot of people don’t realize that trans women are actually at a significant disadvantage due to testosterone suppression to levels far lower than cis women with natural testosterone levels. Eventually a few will overcome that through training hard and working hard for it. But a lot of people just assume a trans woman will have the advantage because they assume a trans woman is still a man somehow; they greatly underestimate the effects of hormones. This is especially true of kids who used puberty blockers and transitioned as soon as they become adults; they’re generally virtually identical to cis women in morphology.

It won't work here, either." And last year, when schools were back in after online classes, the High School had an event (I don't know what, maybe transphobes trying to proselytize outside the school?) So the students had a Trans Rights rally and hundreds of teens and their parents came out in support.
Same with the Pride parade here - there were like 8 transphobes/homophobes saying how much they supported de-transitioners (in itself, perfectly fine. Supporting a person's life journey is a GOOD thing. Trying to use it to pretend the 99+% of people who don't regret transitioning hate them, not so much.) By comparison, there were several thousand LGBTQIA+ people and our allies at the many celebrations during Pride month. They are a VERY loud minority, feeding into the Moral Panic meant to distract us from things that really matter that our government is ignoring or making worse. *So* bored and angry.

Lots of people I talk to bring up points which I know to be false to try and back there transphobic views, in school they use outdated and false ‘facts’ to discriminate against us and do little to nothing to stop hate towards us. They will stand up to other issues but transphobia doesn’t seem to bother them. I hope one day I can move somewhere better and more accepting because while I am safe and okay here I can not be truly myself without feeling scared and hated against. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

I am so sorry to hear that, your parents behaved appallingly and that is their problem, not yours - there is nothing wrong with you, whoever you are and whoever you are attracted to. I hope you know other adults (family members/teachers etc) who will be accepting of you and can support you, and if not, please reach out for help from whoever in your community can provide it (school counsellor, doctor etc). At the same time, your parents have those negative beliefs because they were taught them from childhood by their church or culture, and if they don't know any real LGBT+ people they are probably afraid for you because they believe in the stereotypes and think that other people will mis-treat you. They could be in shock, and although it certainly is not acceptable to yell at you, they may be capable of changing their views over time, given the right education and support. I know there are organisations like PFLAG that support parents of LGBT+ folks to deal with their own homophobia and set them on the right track...

Another closer example of surgery regret rates would be cis people who get similar procedures that are gender affirming. The regret rates for things like breast enhancement OR breast reduction (which would be similar to top surgery) are many times higher than for trans surgeries. And for some cis women who get treatment-resistant breast cancer, they may undergo a double mastectomy. There's charities around and lots of anecdotes of how they have to grieve the loss of their breasts. You don't really see that with gender affirming surgeries...
Another thing is that some people may not want to or may not be able to transition medically, whether that's due to physical health issues OR due to other reasons, like their family being transphobic.
And it's so odd, because my mum will often accidentally mix up he and she when speaking English (since Cantonese is her native language), but just because someone identifies as trans, she'll misgender them.
As someone who grew up in a pretty conservative Pentecostal home, I would say that there is a misunderstanding of child-led explorations. I was told what to do quite a lot and wasn't really allowed to be on my own, because my mum was a bit of a helicopter mum and I had a lot of food allergies. Like, I was sometimes allowed to choose what I'd like to do, but a lot of my activities were directed. I was allowed to choose what I wanted to watch to a degree, but as a kid, my mum didn't like me watching things like High School Musical or Hannah Montana with my sister. She still likes to dictate what I do with my time, like going on walks or what I watch (I should only watch uplifting or educational things, if anything), what I read (she REALLY doesn't like that I'm a big fan of Percy Jackson and all the books by Rick Riordan). Along that vein, when I first became an adult, it was difficult to talk to her. And to this day, I don't feel capable of making decisions for myself, but then they get mad at me when I want to defer to them. And she wonders why I tell white lies?

Hi WorrierCat, I had a similar experience when figuring out that I'm enby. I always described myself as a tomboy when I was younger; whenever we had class discussions about identity "female" was never one I thought of immediately for myself and I struggled even more when having to describe what was inherently mascule or feminine. I kinda see my gender as a sliding scale of 1 to 10, 1 being 100% female, 10 being 100% male, and on any given day I'll slide between 2 and 7, so never fully female but more femme leaning than masc. I like wearing pretty dresses and floral patterns and make up some days, most days I dress/feel/act neutral/neither/andro, but other days I feel more like a guy, the masc feeling is especially noticeable if I'm hanging out with my more femme female friends that day.
I was told the definition of what is a man or woman is "the intrinsic knowing of which one you are", but being enby, there's a lot of unsureness and confusion because I don't feel that conviction for either.
There's nothing wrong with any combination (female, male, neither, both, and anywhere in between) and it's normal to not have how you feel in a fixed position 😊
I hope this helps you figure yourself out! (there's also nothing wrong with not having it figured out but I also know the relief from understanding yourself and having an answer for yourself)

I haven't finished the video yet, but I wanna tell a little story related to the surgery regret rate stuff.
On Bonfire Night of 2021, I broke my ankle. Bimalleolar fracture, which means it was broken in two places and needed surgery. A bimalleolar is like the second worst ankle fracture you can get. I couldn't walk at all. A week after I broke it, I had my surgery and had to stay 4 days in hospital. I was in a cast for 6 weeks. However, it never healed right and I still have pain and swelling to this day. On one of my x-rays, there was a gap in my bones that wasn't there before and there was concern that my surgeon had torn a ligament during the surgery, for which I would have had to have another surgery. But then, after a CT scan, they sort of waved me off without letting me look at the CT images myself. I do think my surgeon tore my ligament tbh, bc I still am struggling so bad and it's the only answer I can think of. I think they just didn't wanna get sued. I already had chronic pain conditions, and this has made them 10 times worse. It has contributed to me becoming an ambulatory wheelchair user bc it is that bad. I am autistic and get sensory issues if my feet are bare, but sometimes, I just have to take my sock off and deal with it bc my foot swells up to the size of a balloon. I've got very little strength in it now. I also hate my scars, I think they're so ugly, so I worry about wearing dresses or shorts now bc I don't want people seeing my huge, dark scars. 🥲 I'm white but the scars have healed red/purple for some reason. I wouldn't say I fully regret my surgery bc obvs it was needed, but I think I regret not asking more questions and I think maybe I should have asked to have it done at a different hospital or smth (however, I live in the UK, so as I'm sure you know, Jamie, it's not that easy to pick and choose who you go to on the NHS). I just wish things could have been done differently somehow bc the pain and swelling in my ankle has destroyed what little life I had left. I can't even bend it inwards. Can't dance. Can't run. I've had to give up so much of my life bc of this. I am depressed about a surgery that I physically NEEDED, but you don't see people saying we should ban all surgeries for ankle fractures now, do you? No, bc that would be ridiculous. The only reason people don't see being anti-gender affirming care as ridiculous is, like you said, bc of transphobia. Bc if it was really concern, then they would be campaigning against other kinds of surgeries with WAY HIGHER complication and regret rates as well. From a British cis woman, you have my full support in the fight against TERFs. 🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷

Last year, I had very advanced surgery to save my left foot. I was warned that it was likely to fail and that even if it succeeded, the regret rate is 25%, with many people ppting for amputation afterwards. Nobody is campaigning to have that surgery banned. It worked and I have no regrets and it's useful in arguments with transphobes.

My nephew has been seeing a lot of things on tik-tok. I'm openly bisexual and he now 'disagrees' with LGBTQ+ because of all the homophobia and transphobia on the platform. I had to remind him last time I was there that not liking something for yourself isn't the same as disliking people for liking a thing. Used the classic tacos and hot dogs analogy and he sort of got it.
He's 10 and raised in a very liberal household.
The fact that he's falling into it means that it is, indeed, everywhere.

A lot of people forget that LBTQ has existed for a long time, they surrounded by it daily, and not just with people either. It is in the animal kingdom, it is within the trees, plants, flowers, and nature. The flowers are Genderfluid, since they are multiisex and they change their gender depending on thier mood/food/seasons or personal reasons. The Fox Species is said to be 97% gay. Humans are not the only ones to practice this sort of thing, although we get blamed for it...but no, it always has existed. Not sure how long for, but still. I was reading about the flowers recently. Science is interesting, since it helps discover this stuff. Scientists do weird things sometimes, but half of the time, they make great discoveries

When we got our cat(it's a precious lil boy) a couple months back, my mom kept calling him a girl, and saying 'she', when referring to him. Now, nobody cared, because it's a cat. He doesn't understand anyways. But she would always correct herself, and even go as far as to apologize to the cat. This utterly *infuriated* me, because I have a trans friend (ftm), who's pronouns she doesn't care about at all. I'll correct her, and she blows up at me, saying I'm being disrespectful, and that " *HeR* mother still calls *her* [deadname]!!", intentionally using the wrong ones just to rub it in. And she wonders why I don't like talking to her about my friends/personal life. My only question is how are people like this more respectful to literal animals, than humans?
