i'm kind of convinced that transphobia partly stems from a critical inability to understand that other people want different things. i have genuinely heard arguments against trans people and transitionary care that narrows down to "well i wouldn't want to transition" yes Janice, that's because you aren't trans. the same thing happens with homophobia "why would a man ever want to sleep with a man when women are so beautiful" because they aren't you.
Some people legitimately don't understand that other people are entire people worn full separate lives and experiences from them. They appear to think that the other people they encounter are literal NPCs, only spawning into existence and becoming activated when an interaction begins.
Yes exactly. This is why they harp so much on the idea that children are being forced/deceived/pressured into "thinking they're trans", because it's the only way they could ever see themselves being "trans", and they seem terminally unable to imagine that other people might feel differently. It's like they lack a Theory of Mind.
For a cis person, transitioning would be extremely distressing, so they project their feelings about it onto us. Because everything always has to be about them.
To those right wigners, conformity must be established in their ideal world.

I feel like many transphobic people don't realize that "trans man/woman" refers to what you identify as *now*, not how you were assigned at birth. Which--I dunno, let's not tell them?

also the phenomenon of men being shamed for not being manly enough and woman being shamed for not being womanly enough. I'm curious how many trans people feel it's at least partly about ingrained cultural norms for each gender.
If society had no gender roles, how many people would still feel the need to transition physically, if they can go out in drag as if it was just everyday clothing for everyone? Or would it have no effect on the numbers at all because it is all about feeling wrong in a person's own skin?

One of my ex girlfriends was a trans woman, my family was trying to be homophobic, and transphobic, and instead kept insisting she would never be a "real" man, she goes well gee I hope not. My family was so confused.
That’s hilarious! I’m assuming they thought she was AFAB and was planning on transitioning to male then? It says a lot that they actually accepted her as a woman, not realizing she wasn’t born that way. Phobes can be so accidentally funny.
While not meant as a transphobic comment, I've had a co-worker carefully ask me if I was trans and when I said I was she just went "What a shame!! That's such a shame!! You are such a beautiful girl, why change that!?" and I was standing there like "Yea...that's kind of the point...."
It turned out she had gotten very confused after seeing me take my hormone pill a little earlier that day, which I was on due to a shortage of hormone patches that I normally used, so she went "Eh...no? I saw you taking the contraceptive pill this morning" (same kind of square strip with rounded edges with the days of the week marked on them) and I had to explain those were my hormones :P .
Another time a woman who had an appointment with our housekeeper was waiting in the hallway and asked me if I could fix the zipper of her dress because it had to be put into some kind of pouch but she had failed to get it in there so her dress kept partially unzipping itself.
Later, when the person she had an appointment with had shown up and she was walking away, I overheard her asking if I was trans, and the housekeeper said I was, and I could hear her asking "If I had already become very rowdy because of the hormones, because that's what boys in puberty do as well right?" and the housekeeper explained I was going the other way :P.
Before the door (self-closing one) shut I could only hear a surprised: "She was born a boy? Like how!?"
As much as I felt she was confused because of my voice, oh did it feel validating to have people think you are going the opposite direction :P .

There are intersex cis men who get period cramps and some bleed, I am like on support forums for intersex people and like there a lot of people that go through this. A lot of them are fucking terrified to tell anyone because they feel ashamed about it, when they shouldn't be.

I thought cis referred to gender and sex being the same. Under that definition, a person can’t be intersex and cis. What does cis mean?

@@saje239 Intersex people will frequently have a gender literally chosen for them at birth and get “corrective” surgeries to appear as the sex traditionally associated with that gender. So, an intersex cis man would be someone who was “corrected” to appear male as an infant and who turned out to be a man.
There are also some intersex people who don’t show signs of their condition until puberty. In that case, an intersex cis man would be someone who appeared to be an endosex (non-intersex) male at birth (and was assigned gender accordingly) and who turned out to be a man but also found out he had an intersex condition.

I mean... trans or not, men CAN breastfeed. All human beings are born with the capability to develop working mamary glands. As a Trans man myself, I had those tissues removed so I can no longer to that, but cis women, trans men, trans women and cis men can all lactate under the right conditions.

@@kitfreyisacat With the right hormonal trigger - which sometimes occurs naturally - cisgender males can produce natural, viable breast milk. That's part of what defines us as mammals. We all have the same underlying structure.
And recently the breast milk produced by AMAB people who are using lactation-inducing treatments (the exact same ones used by cisgender women) has been thoroughly tested for nutrition, toxins, etc, and found to be biologically identical to cis women's breast milk.
Biology is weird and cool in a whole bunch of ways they never had the time to teach us in high school.

But this year we went to Rome (as a class) and I visited a book store with a few classmates and in the English section (that was impressively big) I found your book, and got the last copy they had in stock. I've just started reading it, whenever my parents aren't around and I love it

I'm not Transgender, but my mum taught me how to change a car tyre because my parents had divorced when I was 4 and someone had to teach me. This was in 1989.
Mum had learned to be self-sufficient long before she re-married. She also taught me how to change a headlamp. That cartoon is just stupid!
Yeah, my dad made me learn to change a tire before he would teach me to drive. It's an important skill for people of all genders. Although I can see why the woman in the pink dress wouldn't want to do it in that outfit, if someone else was willing to help her.
The interesting thing about the cartoon is that the artist meant for it to be inclusive but bigots claimed it
In my driver's Ed class the females were the ones made to change a tire, check the oil in front of the class because the male teachers wanted us to be knowledgeable and able to do some of the work ourselves. I guess they assumed the males would likely already know.

As a cisgender bisexual woman I just have to say this, I love trans men and they deserve the upmost positive attention from everyone! They're underrepresented and underappreciated by lots of people as shown in this video unfortunately. These people would obviously be cruel towards trans people no matter what because they're transphobes but they seem to be even rougher on trans men. That is when they actually acknowledge the existence of trans men, which doesn't seem to be often unfortunately... these people are absolute numbskulls...

My sister (45) is very trans/homophobic so we don't often talk about that stuff, even though I'm trans and bi. A few weeks ago we were in the car together and seeing a very cool looking pedestrian I said, "Wow, they are serving enby chaos!" My sister loses it a bit railing about all these new labels and she that didn't even know what I was saying because I was using all these made up words. I repeated slowly and she realized that she merely didn't follow and imagined me talking in some weird queer code because I was referring to a gender non-conforming person. I then made fun of her for being old and not understanding what "serving" means. (And she does know what enby/NB/non-binary means as she works with youth.) The phobes are so sensitive about things and imagine offense and weirdness even when none exists.

I'm honestly more concerned about the 'manly' (which is laughable because threatening to beat someone up does not equate to man) Guys that threaten trans people when it comes to using the bathroom than I am about the person using the toilet. I've had intense discussions with transphobes about how unsafe they make me feel for threatening others. And I'm not trans but I will die on this hill when I say that Trans men are men. Trans women are women.

Look, I've been flashed in a women's locker room before... by a ciswoman. I knew the person by reputation too. She was well known for being deeply unstable and had been thrown out of the local homeless shelter for physically assaulting another woman and posting a racist tirade on the bulletin board. After removing her clothes where we were all forced to see her, she said (tw: graphic racism) "this is better than a Vietcong monkey c*nt isn't it?" She was visibly drunk too. Point being, people who do things like this are deeply unwell and should not be in any locker room period: regardless of their anatomy.
I have also been threatened by a ciswoman to prove I was a "real woman" or she'd call the police. I'm AFAB nonbinary. I usually use the women's bathrooms because they have the special bins for period products. I'm perfectly happy to use the men's, and sometimes I have. Unfortunately, I have also been assaulted in a men's bathroom and that incident resulted in physical injuries as well as emotional ones.

It actually makes somes sense when you realize that these transphobes are really just baselessly projecting their own predatory habits on trans people. They're worried cis men would attack women in the women's restroom because THEY would attack women (cis or trans) in the women's restroom.

Whenever people try to propose new bathroom laws because of their theoretical crimes, I always point out that existing laws already cover that. And these laws apply no matter what gender the perpetrator or victim are. So the problem is solved and we can move along.

I had the bathroom discussion with my dad yesterday. I could not convince him, but he had so many accidental ally moments that I still forgive him. He just doesn't understand yet...
I know people who are pretty much allies but don’t really “get” the whole thing, and to them I would describe it as what someone is vs WHO someone is. I don’t know if a trans person would take issue with that framing, but I’m dumbing down for the laymen. I also say that gender dysphoria is as real and diagnosable as something like BPD, and we know that to expect say a kid with bipolar to act the same as their peers in every circumstance is just unrealistic at best and cruel at worst
I haven't told mine yet. He's made it very clear that I'm not allowed in the bathroom that does not correspond with my agab, and he misgenders me on purpose as a punishment. Guess what? I use whichever tf bathroom I want when he's not around, and I have friends who defend my pronoun usage no matter who misgenders me.
I would love all bathrooms just having these labels:
-stalls
-urinals
-changing table
-disabled friendly/barrier free
Maybe even
-kids sized stalls/ sinks
And yes, I do think for privacy reasons the urinals should only habe urinals and sinks, but that room should be a third of the other, because they take up less space.
Also there should be diapers, wipes, tampons and pads in every non urinal bathroom, if not for free, than at least in an dispenser.

At least for cleaning up purposes, they wouldn’t go to an urinal, right?)

My guess on the "cis men are trans women" ect. post is that someone told them that cis is the opposite of trans and they thoroughly misinterpreted what that meant.
What kills me about the "who should be using what bathroom" debate is that, I'm transmasc but I don't feel comfortable using the men's restroom. And I hate that one of my co workers got onto me twice about using them. I'm not even really attracted to women I just gotta piss 😩 most people leave it be because I'm no-op and only was on T for a year.
But men's bathrooms are unsafe for trans people, especially for those of us who don't pass. So yes. I'll continue using women's bathrooms despite not being a woman. What are you gonna do, tell me to not piss? Die
Here in the U.S. State of Florida, laws have been recently which, among other things, restricts bathroom use on most publicly-owned establishments based on your AGAB -- not even your I.D., so fun thought experiment for verifying an allegation -- but privately-owned establishments can permit it (but also are enabled to discriminate if someone leverages an aforementioned allegation). So here I am, not even half a year into treatments, completely out at work, and both torn between the bathroom my government would force me to use and the bathroom my coworkers would expect me to use, but I'm just kinda vibing the unfettered freedom of having a fallback if the one toilet seat I'm used to is occupied.
There should just be a gender neutral bathroom in every establishment. Even if theres already mens & womens toilets in place, & joining them together would be too big a hassle, just add it as another option.

Let's just be honest: in any circumstances where there's mixed toilets, there's only ever been one issue: People with poor hygiene and social conduct making things difficult for everyone else.
I'd like us to stop misplacing problems on gender AND I'd like us to stop framing women's toilet's as safe spaces. I blasted want everything to be a safe space and not see my safety confined to THAT space. If abusers stopped at that door, then they're very clearly capable of understanding abuse and bloody learn how to stop being abusive sh*ts! 😤
I don't mind all gender toilets. I don't even mind if some desperate ppl start taking that as an opportunity to have intercourse (..... big fat "EW" in terms of hygiene). As long as they clean up their mess 😂

Yeah, some say trans people are confused and yep, I AM confused about what bathroom I should use as a trans man who just started coming out to a few people and who hasn't done any other transitioning. To keep using the women's restrooms in places where some people know I'm a guy (like at the office) feels weird. Using the men's restrooms would feel weirder XD
i love that it's so easy for people to say the correct pronouns that they often do it by accident. it's not that it's hard for them to remember, they're just being an asshole

I remember a video which was, I think, Ben Shapiro and Steven Crowder, where one of them started talking about Laverne Cox. The other one was like, "Who's that?" and he said, "She - I mean, he's a TV actor."
Hmmm. It's almost like when even an aggressive transphobe looks at Laverne Cox, even when they know she's trans, she still reads as a woman. But "they can always tell".

I was having a conversation about LGBT+ stuff with my grandma who’s trying really hard to learn but definitely still has a lot of work to do and she tried the “but you can always tell” line for trans folks (specifically trans men) and I showed her photos of you, Ty Turner, and some others because y’all don’t fit into her idea of what a trans person looks like and damn that was hella effective! She immediately retracted her statement and acknowledged that “I guess you really have no idea someone’s story just looking at them” and I call that progress…even though the following comments weren’t quite ideally worded she was willing to be proven wrong and learn.
A friend of mine who is not transphobic (and recently became a dad) once asked what the whole thing with body characteristics is like so I gave a brief explanation of how some people say they can always tell.
I decided to show him a picture of a transwoman next to someone else and asked which of the two he thought was trans, and he picked the wrong one, by saying "I mean, I'd go with her because of the jawline I guess?" and he was mortified when he found out that something so small was still putting him on the path of "That's how you can tell" even though he explicitly stated that now that he has become a dad, he felt "feeling ready to die on whatever hill if someone tries his or her best to make my child unhappy now or in the future!"
He felt bad for making the mistake, and understood really well how dangerous the idiotic discussion about body characteristics because of that single example I gave him.

Technically cis men CAN breastfeed. It doesn't normally happen naturally though it has in cases where the mother was lost in traumatic fashion but we have the parts and the hormone shots exist to allow them to be used for that purpose.

As a trans woman whose been on HRT for nearly a year now (HRT started on August 8th!), I can absolutely attest to the fact that we experience monthly cramping. Not exactly my favorite part of the process, truth be told.
I guess it completely escapes you that your alleged cramping might come from all the unnatural levels of hormones you are forcing into your body?

i very recently started T and after my shot my mom walks into my room and says "congrats on your last day of being a woman." i was stunned. just her saying that made me realize that she had seen me as a girl even though ive been out as a trans man for over a year. it was hard to explain to her that what she had just said hurt. she had been passively trying to get me to be more feminine over the past year because im guessing she doesnt want to lose a daughter. 😐 what should i do to make her see me as more masculine?

Imagine being raised as a child. Not a girl, not a boy - a child. You get to play with anything you want, you get to wear any clothes you are comfortable in, you don't have to behave to match stereotypes (because there are none), you get to watch any cartoons you like, you get to pick up any hobby and so on. The topic of genitals is left for later in life - you are taught about genetics and chromosomes and you know what type of puberty you are "preset" to hit. And here you get to make a choice - if you're OK with it or not.

if we had gap-less toilet stalls in america i'm not sure that the bathroom issue would be as large as it is here. it's incredibly awkward to make eye contact with someone through the door gap or to have to push someone's child back under the bottom of the stall when you're just trying to do your business, so i'd say there are a multitude of non-creeper related issues that could be fixed with some floor to ceiling stalls. as for someone going in to hypothetically take pictures, there's no magic barrier that stops cisgendered people from doing that, matching toilet designation or not, so we should make stalls private.

I am 28 and just realized I’m on the ACE spectrum. With Gray ace sounding the most correct. I used to be a bigot to the whole LGBTQIA+ community, but through experiences and my partner coming out as a non binary otherkin, I have been becoming more accepting of everything. (Realizing I was ace also helped) I love your videos Jamie, as well as one topic and the click. I’m still figuring out how to be an ally and part of the community

I wore a pronoun pin a few years back with my agab before I really realized I was nonbinary, and had to stop wearing it after awhile because people would acknowledge the pin and intentionally misgender me. It got really uncomfortable- not so much because of being misgendered, but more because people got really nasty about it. And this was a few years ago, before trans issues really became the "big thing".

What I don't get is how people expect everyone to conform to ideology that is many years old. When females are born they don't automatically know they want to wear skirts and crush on boys. When males are born they don't know they want to play with trucks and marry a woman. They choose that path. But It's only a problem when someone decides to show they think differently.
Trans people have existed for a very long time and are now feeling comfortable to be open about it. It doesn't affect them but they decide to go against it because they think somebody should live their life the way another person wants them to.
In a battle of minds (like the war on bigotry) its always nice to see your opponent has no idea how to use their weapon.

I had a bit of a frustrating conversation with my mom after Fox News announced a possible law to arreset/fine people for misgendering someone. She seemed to think if you did it once you went to jail, and I tried to explain the law more than likely is referring to when people purposely and maliciously refuse to use the person’s preferred pronouns over and over and over again. She then went on to complain about if someone wants to be a he or a she that’s fine, but if someone wants to go by neither she will call them it. I told her that was offensive and that if they want to be called they/them just use that, and then she proclaimed they/them was plural only despite how I know she uses singular they in normal talk. She refused to believe me when I said singular they was older than plural they, and that the first known recorded use of singular they was from the 13th century. I can barely understand the refusal to be kind to trans/non-binary people, but out right refusing common language and insisting it cannot change just baffles me.

Great video but all this ignorance is spreading everywhere. I'm nearly 60, and in my time before my operation, coming out was very difficult. Now its more lifted, but the backlash from the public is getting worse all the time due to all the misinformation being spread through news, social media and even politicans. If only we could find ways to counter educate the public.

For those who are trying to be allies but keep failing because you keep calling them by the wrong pronouns or just dont know what trans man or trans woman means heres what helped me understand it:
Whenever i think of the word "trans" and "man or woman" next to it I always think of "transition to" with aformentioned nouns atached. So, for "trans man" i think "transition to man" and for "trans woman" i think "transition to woman." This has helped me immensely in my journey in discovering who i am as a trans woman myself.

4;04 if I remember correctly, bio men can also lactate but the nipples need lots of stimulation over time to do so and the "breast milk" wont have the nutrients that bio female breast milk does, so even though its not as convenient, it is technically possible for even straight cis men to breast feed
yes! cis men do have the anatomy, but their bodies usually just lack the hormones and stimulation to get em going.
