  • This video is a deep dive into the Nikon Z8 shooting banks and how I use them as a hybrid (photo/video) shooter for wildlife and landscape. This video gives a great overview of how these setting work and how best to set them up so they make sense for both photos and videos. These setting take advantage of all the latest updates from Firmware 2.0, including bird subject detection. We also look at how I use the I menu to access these settings and then we will take a deep dive into my Shooting Bank A for action wildlife photography and videography. This is part 1 in this series with Part 2 on Shooting Bank B setup coming soon.

    Hi Stuart, thanks for the fantastic explanation on setting up shooting banks on the Nikon Z8. I''m a wildlife hobbyist in Australia, and I've really struggled to get my head around set-ups in general. Your detailed explanation helps me to give it another shot and hopefully not get too frustrated on loosing a shot. I am looking forward to any future set-up explanations that could assist my passion in the future.👍

    2:20 I’d much rather have control over Save/Load settings than gave U1/U2 reset every time I turn the camera off and on. With my Z7ii I was constantly frustrated by this. A shoot lasts for more than one battery.

      @raincoastphoto  Před 4 měsíci +1

      That's a really good point, it has been a number of years since using them. A push button reset to your saved settings would be an ideal solution for both.

    Thanks for the vid. Some great info. I don't own any Z cameras & still shoot a Nikon DSLR but watched this & vids on other brand menu set-ups thinking it might help me when & if I make the upgrade. Some really nice photos!

      @raincoastphoto  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Thanks Thomas, the Z8 is quite the upgrade, and if it is in the budget make the jump imo. It works so well with the ftz adaptor, there is no need to immediately jump to Z lenses as good as they are so can ease into the full upgrade.

    Hi. I'm new to the Z8 but did lots of research. FYI for the CF Express card, you should have gotten the Delkin Power Gen 4 in the 1TB size - it runs materially faster and cooler than any of the other sizes of the same item...

    • @raincoastphoto
      @raincoastphoto  Před 20 dny +1

      Thanks Barry, I got the Delkin thrown in with the camera and the 128 is actually a 256gb so got a good deal there. Good to know the larger cards run cooler. I mainly use a ProGrade Gold 512gb 3400mb/s and it has worked great for me. i get the hot card warning sometimes but has never shutdown because of it.

      @@raincoastphoto I bought the Z8 because we're going on an expedition cruise to Svalbard next July and I needed a "real" camera. My last camera was a Canon F-1 that I bought new in 1974...LOL... The Z8 was bundled with the 24-120 F4 and I'm getting the 180-600 F5.6-6.3 when it comes back in stock. Your video series has been extremely helpful to a total newbie to digital equipment. This camera has so many options/settings it's quite overwhelming for a beginner. I figured I'd need a year of learning before the bucket list trip.

      @@barryinny That's a great reason to buy a Z8 that's for sure. Glad the videos are helping it is such a complex camera, you definitely need as much time behind it as possible over the next year. For that trip I would want to get really comfortable with the banks all dialed in for the different subject matter.

    Great video I have Z9 and Z8 fantastic cameras but i was bummed that Z9 firmware didn't add pre capture, I really thought it would but maybe they are still working on it.

    • @raincoastphoto
      @raincoastphoto  Před 4 měsíci

      Yeah it was a strange update especially for a full number 5.o. I was expecting RAW pre capture for sure. Even at 20fps would have been great.

    If you have ever used the Sony A1, do you think the Z8 is better in some ways? Deciding between z8 and A1.

    • @raincoastphoto
      @raincoastphoto  Před 4 měsíci +3

      The short answer I have never even held a Sony camera short of in Best Buy. I have shot Nikon for over 20 years and have never felt the need to change brands. The Z8 is an amazing camera I think performance wise there is nothing to choose between them. I really like the Nikon controls and ergonomics and although larger I prefer that for using with larger lenses. Nikon seems much better at providing firmware updates to improve the cameras as well (Z8/Z9). I am a fan of the CFexpress type B card over the smaller type a/sd . The difference in price between them is a really nice lens. I would suggest holding each camera and buy which feels better in your hand, and then learn everything you can about it.

    Can you elaborate why you have chosen Sport for VR in Custom Settings Shoot A ?

    • @raincoastphoto
      @raincoastphoto  Před 4 měsíci

      I use Sport VR for virtually everything other than when it gets really dark with slow shutter speeds. With Normal VR the view through the viewfinder can be quite jumpy when it resets between shots, with sport it is a much smoother experience but Normal does provide more stabilization so is great in really low light handholding or for handholding video

    Why does the z8 raw weigh 30 MB and the z7 80 MB?

    • @raincoastphoto
      @raincoastphoto  Před 4 měsíci

      The lossless compressed are about 56mb the high efficiency* are 35mb , so just a different compression

      Which camera is better Z8 or Sony A7R-5?)@@raincoastphoto

    • @raincoastphoto
      @raincoastphoto  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I have no experience with current Sony cameras but 8K 60, 4K 120, 20 fps raw, CF express type B, ergonomics pf long lenses among others would make me choose Nikon @Vadimkatashid

  • @everythingfelixstowevideo328

    I just don’t get the thinking behind Nikon with these banks. They are useless! Just give us user settings that don’t change! You can’t even set burst mode in banks. Or you can but it won’t stay saved as soon as you change it in another bank! These are supposed to be pro cameras. It’s not rocket science.

    • @raincoastphoto
      @raincoastphoto  Před dnem

      Yeah I must admit I originally agreed 100% with you but after setting up all 4 of my banks and getting really used to them I have actually been really happy with the performance, I just wish they had a quick reset option beyond having to save to an sd card, and yes I wish somethings could be saved in the bank settings as you say.
