      Let me give you some even better advice.
      Mechanics already assume you don't know much about cars or why would you even be bringing it to them? I've done 100% of the work on all the cars I've ever owned but I wasn't born with that knowledge or experience. I had to acquire it.

    • @YuckFou0x0FFFF
      @YuckFou0x0FFFF Před 8 dny

      Oh, we already know you don't know anything about your car. That's not the issue here. The issue is when your mechanic doesn't know how to read a book. Most shops DO NOT have skilled diagnosticians. Even the mechanic in this video is clearly confused by this problem.
      #1 All of the codes share a VREF circuit.
      #2 We have a DEAD battery. There is no point in researching codes. His first call should've been to replace the battery. Do the codes persist? Check power and grounds. Fix broken or loose connection. Done.

    • @markaskew

    The first thing that need to be done is to get a good battery in it. Lots of codes could be caused by a low or bad battery. I would put the original ECM back in it because I'm sure that the replacement wasn't programmed.

    • @captgraybush2890
      @captgraybush2890 Před 4 měsíci +4

      Ikr, he tried to do a relearn when the computer actually would need to be reprogrammed. His little snap on Apollo doesnt have that capability. I would've hooked back up the original module that was in question. Cleared codes and rechecked the module to ensure it was the correct one for the car. Then, I would have run a drive cycle and rescanned to pull codes. But if he has a crank cam correlation code. That guys check engine light just became a change engine light. In my area, we charge around 3k to just change the three chains. That's not including any head or camshaft. A used engine from the salvage is 500- 1200 bucks.

    I remember a customer once told me that she had someone who was a "mechanic" that worked on her car. She told me, "He went to school as a mechanic."
    She was has a power but no crank issue. The guy was rambling on about, "it is a starter; It is an alternator; it is a crank position sensor." She starts to get suspicious about him and asked him some questions after installing those parts. He dodged all the questions and she had to pay for the labor as well. After that she never seen him again.
    A week later, I was working at the Napa store. She ask if there was anyone that could help fix her car. She didn't want to take the car in to the shop to get it fix because she has to wait and it was her only daily driver. I agree to help fix her car. I diagnosed her car. It was just a blown starter fuse and starter relay.

    i've seen this before. parts changers that have no clue how to diagnose issues sees a communication code in multiple modules saying lost com with ecu/pcm and assume it means bad pcm/ecu wrong that's the systems being shut down to direct all available power to the ecu/pcm due to poor charging system performance ie bad battery or alternator or poor grounds or power connection. to start any diag here the main issue needs to be resolved and that's the battery dying constantly. scream parasitic draw most likely whatever module is failing isn't going to sleep and keeping the car awake killing the battery battery is smoked from being killed too many times and a loose ground causing voltage swings especially on the 5v reference circuits. so to start with new battery cleaning on the battery wires replace if needed as well as the major ground and power connections to body and engine . when new battery is installed start immediately with a parasitic draw test giving the car a 30 minute sit to allow it to go to sleep. repair draw till within specs. as for the rest of the codes document but don't have much faith in them go ahead and clear out everything and needs to be driven a couple of days minimum and verified the battery is staying charged as well as completing hopefully at least one drive cycle and running all monitors. now read codes if theres with an excessive amount of odd random codes it is safe to assume the ecm/pcm was swapped with as used defective or misprogrammed unit and the best course is ti reinstall the other ecm and see what pops immediately up. go through and relearns it needs clear codes and then proceed to drive again complete a cycle and check codes again. GM vehicles especially are very ground sensitive and will set all sorts of random codes due to poor grounding you may very well find that 90% of the problems here is a single or multiple bad grounds. yes the engine is a bit noisy and probable timing chain issue but that's not causing the rest of the issues

    I would have immediately tried the old box back in and started a fresh. If the last mech didn't program the new one properly and left it like that, the old box, which I'm assuming was programmed correctly, will give a starting point in which to begin fault finding.

    Bad customer bad car I would have left as soon as I seen him and the car. I wouldnt even waste my time. Also with all those codes with the sensors he may have a 5v reference issue, timing issues, ignition been tampered with, just a hell hole walk away fast.

      He's generally right. They technically can and have made a good 4 cylinder, like the Iron Duke, but they can't make a modern fuel efficient 4 cylinder engine.
      In fact, they don't anymore. If you ever wondered what the hell happened to Daewoo, they were purchased and renamed to "GM Korea" but they're still the same people and are responsible for cars like the Spark, Sonic, Trax, and the Cruze.

    with the count on the codes I would say that ECM is not Programmed and running at Default I would say pull out the laptop and get the J-box and try to reprogram the ECU the cam issue may just be the solenoids on actuating due to lack of info from ECU and no You Snap on will not Program an ECU and Resting it is not Programing .. you need a J-box and an online OEM one day access Subscription minimum

    When you get a multitude of codes like that, it means the PCM is losing voltage connection, that's why it's throwing all those codes. There's a bad ground/circuit somewhere, in this case it's most likely that battery ground wire and the usual suspect for the parasitic draw is aftermarket audio, they almost never install that stuff correctly or safely. When codes like that happen start simple by figuring out what all those codes have in common, like the battery itself.

    Had to replace my timing chain last year. Nearly $6k. Only paid $10k for the whole car so that was a pretty big hit. Certainly wasn't prepared for that. But it has turned out to be a pretty decent car. I love it. But still, I'll never buy another car without a knowledgeable man by my side. Did my best but sometimes your best just isn't good enough 🤷‍♀️🐝

    Great content! But why not fix the issue he's actually having? You should have replaced the battery and load tested the alternator. Chances are the alternator is bad from driving around with a bad battery.

  • @bobbylibertini
    @bobbylibertini Před 6 dny

    Dude! First thing: Charge the battery. Half of those codes and obviously the starting issue and weird behaviors could just be a result of that loose negatory cable. Modern cars do crazy stuff when they're not getting proper voltage. Clear the codes and see which ones come back once you have a fully charged battery. But yeah, the cam and crank sensors are likely due to that timing chain. And of course, check the grounds to the ECM, and for a bad wire/connector in the mix....but it ounds like that puppy's gonna need a timing chain job. Better to advise the guy of that from the git-go as he may not want to put the money into doing everything...and of course, if he keeps driving it with that chain the way it is......[EDIT: Ooopps! Didn't notice that I already posted on this one! Sorry...]

      The car's PCM, what you call a computer, doesn't tell you what's wrong with it. At best if you're lucky, it can help point in the direction to look for the actual problem. The average car today has over 50 electronic modules and 1500 wires or more. Good luck finding a broken wire with just a test light.. it's not 1964 anymore

  • @user-rr7je8iw3b

    Clear the codes first, then test drive vehicle and allow driving cycles to complete. If any or all those trouble codes come back, it's a confirmation problem persists.. the rattling noise could be a tensioner, idler pulley as well.. whenever battery fails, it triggers a christmas tree, and vehicles electrical system goes nuts.. on the otehr hand, I would approach the ratting noise making sure its not internal to the engine.
