I just realized that David didn't have a father, but then Maine was like a father to him. And then episode 6, which had a huge impact on David. I think this is one of the main reasons why everything ended the way it ended. David couldn't stop, he couldn't stop chroming himself, he couldn't stop working as a merk. He had to keep running.

that shot of David at the end is one of the most iconic parts of the series for me. he's not even screaming. hes going through SO much pain, exertion, and grief. he's probably pushing the sandy harder than he ever has before, while abandoning his mentor to die alone. it goes beyond a scream. his body is contorting in agony. the only thing keeping him from dislocating his own jaw was the fact that he was out of time. he had to move. grab the arms and get out.

2:03 Maine wasnt psycho anymore, that´s why his words hit even harder. He knows he cant live with himself after what the drugs made him do, so he´s passing the torch to David (also his hands, we see them after she clashes with the van lucy´s waiting him in, its pretty poetic)
Maine also passes his wish to David, "keep running", his whole theme and the source of his need to become stronger. The way Maine´s envy develop is perfect for me, i think his rather fast (pun intended) jealousy starts with Maine losing the sandevista for David´s sake since the deal with David´s mom went wrong.
The cyberpsychosis amplifies this behaviour, expanding his dream of running and the resentment he feels.
At the end he´s grateful and proud of how much David has developed.

Nah, he's still psycho. It's just cyberpsychosis doesn't just turn you into a rage monster. Other forms of cyberpsychosis consist of losing emotional responsiveness and becoming a robot, compulsive desire to steal things, etc. In Maine's case, his psychosis involved delusions/hallucinations, and spouts of uncontrollable rage. In this scene, Maine calms down around David because part of his brain still registers and remembers David as a friend.

2:13 For me, Maine's death was the most saddest event in the show, I was hung up over it. Think about what a great man he is, man got his sandevistan implant stolen by a punk, but he never kills him (god knows how hard it is to get a military grade implant). Then proceed to take him in/recruit him and teach him the ways of being cyberpunk. And then slowly, he realized that all the suppressants are slowly driving him insane aka. cyberpsycho. His woman, Dorio died infront of him, from trying to stop him. Lastly, we catch a glimpse of what Maine was like when he was young. He was like David. He was running in a desert with nothing in sight. He was running but there was no end goal in sight. He huffed and kept running but stopped because there was truly no meaning for doing what he did. Which portrayed him well as he was always pushing himself because he thinks he was going to be special, but in the end, he was just like the rest. Which really foreshadowed what was about to come next. (David's death) He lost his life, his love ones, his wealth, everything from installing too much cybernetics and implants. No matter what he did, there was no happy ending from being a cyberpunk in night city. Wrong story, wrong city.
Probably not related, but Maine sounds a lot like Maiet Entertainment, it's a video game company that created Gunz the duel and I loved that company, it's a lot like Maine when you compare with both entity(both grow to its peak and slowly self-destructed on its own). When Maiet shut down, it was the same feeling I felt when Maine died.

I love the entirety of this scene. This is the second time David witnesses a parental figure die, and he STILL can’t do anything to save them. Despite everything he’s gone through, it still isn’t enough.
Moving onto Maine, the “you can’t do it” bit hurts so much when you think of the context of this episode. Whether intentional or not, Maine’s words just callback to earlier in the episode when Lucy told David to tell her she can do it. If Maine gave the word, David would’ve stayed and died. But Maine’s words hold a different meaning compared to David’s. When Maine tells David he can’t do it, it’s not only because David physically wouldn’t be able to handle it, but also because David has a responsibility to Lucy and Maine has a responsibility to both of them. Maine is a sacrifice and he has to be for his people, for his family. The only way to ensure his people’s survival is if he doesn’t.

Lucid isn't the same as not being crazy. Maine was still hallucinating, and even if he knew that what he was seeing wasn't real, it isn't the same as being able to tell the difference between hallucination and reality. Even if he'd left with David, sooner or later his insanity would end up hurting someone else he cared for, and he could not let that happen.

The thing is, Maine absolutely could have gotten better. He could have chromed down and gotten actual therapy, both with drugs and psychological. Its something we know happens because Max-Tac exists, and is staffed with previous cyberpsychos that were actually captured, but the system would rather treat cyberpsychosis as a end point of a disease that cannot be recovered from, than to address the idea that the cyberware is just exacerbating peoples existing traumas and damages until they "go psycho". easier to just write them off as a lost cause and have max-tac clean them up than to actually solve the underlying issues that cause people to go psycho. Its so prevalent a reaction that the normal inhabitants of the city assume that cyberpsycosis is as good as a death sentence, and a violent one at that.

@@UrzaWeatherlight The problem is, even if he chromed down and gotten therapy... could he actually have lived with himself? He'd still have killed someone he loved, as well as multiple inncoent people whose only crime was doing their job as members of Trauma Team. And chroming down and getting therapy is a lengthy process. Who is to say that his cyberpsychosis might not kick into high gear again before he could get the help he needs? He literally almost killed David the moment he entered the room, and that was *after* entering lucidity. And there's the dollar value involved: Even assuming that he could maintain control and lucidity long enough to get the help he needed... who was gonna pay for it? The removal of the cyberware, the aftercare needed to recover from it, and the therapy needed to get him back to sanity? All of that costs money, money that the crew likely could never get, and Maine would never ask his crew to work themselves near to death trying to get it.
And there is one of those "reformed" Max-Tac officers you can speak with in 2077. They're still basically cyberpsychos, with the one you speak with making it clear that she deeply loves killing people with her mantis blades, to the point that she won't switch them out with a newer model, despite having a flaw that was literally responsible for their cyberpsychosis in the first place.

what crossing the line in the sand ultimately symbolizes I'm not exactly sure but my guess would be that Maine has lost all his reason to fight and keep going his determination he has lost everything Dorio his ability to further augment himself with cybernetics and his sanity its the end of the line for him but just the beginning for David of course we all know ultimately David stops running too just like Maine the goal of a cyberpunk is ultimately a fools errand the story of every night city legend ends the same its always just a matter of time you want a happy ending? wrong city wrong people

At 2:52 when it cuts to the desert scene really fast, its possible to see that in Maine's allucination (probably his past or the place he grew up) David is running from Maine. Meaning David had a place in Maine's heart. You cannot see the soldiers or any other object that was close to them aside from Dorio's body previously when he was "preparing" her funeral. It's interesting to see that in this episode we saw many flashes from a young Maine. A very skinny and young Maine, running in the desert... showing us that Maine always "ran" after something. He went to Night City a skinny and poor kid from the desert (that's what I think ok), made a name for him and gathered a group that he could trust.... And after all that he still kept running, never knowing when to stop. And that probably was his demise... What a great character.

David's whole story revolves around the fact he never got to even think about his own dreams, and instead decided to chase dreams of the ones he loved most in their honor. Lucy was right, he was the guy who would jump in the fire and get burned to save someone, no matter if he knew it or not.

2:56 Maine reached the end of his road and was never able to pass that limit because that’s where his life was foreshadowed to end but David was able to run beyond the road thanks to Maine which foreshadowed his survival. one of the best episodes in any fiction I’ve ever seen.

This scene was so fucking heavy
David’s love for his new family was everything to him, he would’ve thrown himself in harms way for anyone of those guys and he did. His own self destruction via too much chrome was all so he could protect everyone more than himself. Even if for the good of others we can still go too far for ourselves.
Maine wanted to protect everyone too, his crew, he actually sympathized when David told him his mom had actually died and not that anything was stolen, and he gave him a chance to be part of the family his mom was.
This show made me sad and happy god dammit

The brief moment of lucidity as he knows what he has done and what is coming (MaxTac) is what makes this scene hit hard. It reminds me of terminal lucidity that dementia patients have before their death: dementia robbed their memories and their ability to rationalize but they're able to think clearly and remember things briefly just before they pass away.

This is absolutely imo the best character death and written scene in anime history. The emotion felt throughout, the uncomfortable pause between the childish nature of young David clashing with the harsh reality of the situation and his moment of realization, to point where David sees maine get torn to pieces by explosives and make a futile attempt a scream only to choke on an entire range of emotions. Watching this scene along with the music in the background and the imagery made me feel like I was gagging and choking as well. Absolutely horrific to see a beloved character die in such a blaze of glory but an absolutely perfect send off to an extremely well made character.

This was honestly the moment i just felt dread, when people talk about sad moments in this show it’s always about Lucy and David’s death but Maine is barely heard of which usually shocks me because to me Maine had the most beautiful yet messed up deaths in the anime I felt dread because after what he did to his girlfriend that was the moment he knew he couldn’t go back he couldn’t recover from this so when David showed up to help him Maine saw new hope a kid who’s life isn’t screwed up yet. He sees himself in David probably when he was younger so he passes on the torch to him. Maine showed David he needed to keep fighting keep fighting for Lucy and the gang and that’s why Maine was so important to David even after he passed

My favorite part is the last shot of Maine. That skinny guy at the end of the road. He, presumably, turned around and ran an entire life's worth but never far enough. More muscle, more tech, more. But never reached the goal. And in the end, he was still that skinny guy. The road was up, and he knew this was it. No more running.

  • @NightWolf3342
    @NightWolf3342 Před rokem +5

I really like they set Maine's past as a runner in a desert-like place outside the NC, it shows that Maine was a poor, skinny young man chasing his dream so he started his life as a edgerunner here, and also tells that inside of this big guy Maine, is still the same young man and keep running for his dream.
However, he finally realized that he is about to be ended, his life, his dream, his love, his memory....the sky above that young man shortly flashed out with the explosion, imply that everything meaningful for Maine are gone at the moment he was blown up.
