For my latest woodworking project, I decided to build a wood (IPE) case for my Starrett Dial Caliper! To keep the caliper in good working order, it is important to keep dust and debris off of the long rack gear in the caliper. I always keep my Starrett tools in their original boxes, but to go along with the heirloom quality of the tools, I wanted a create this wooden box to match this particular tool, since I use it all of the time. I didn't want to use magnets for this woodworking project because it attracts metal dust, exactly what I want to keep away from the caliper. That being said, I would have to guess that no one will read this, and the first magnet comment will get pined to the top - enjoy this project build!

Few facts: 1-I avoided magnets to avoid metal dust in MY personal shop. More than wood here. 2- i used epoxy to keep the build moving along. Five minute epoxy. Not 20 hour PVA. 3- the top is not warped. It is touching the bubble on the dial. I took off too much material flattening the wood that surrounds the caliper I did make a dimple in the top after the video. Also the reason for no felt. 4-this is not a sponsored video. 5- the giveaway is not mandatory if it gets you upset ignore it.
6- thank you for the love and support over the last 9 years ✊🏻
Starrett deserves a case like this. Should have flocked the inside though. Green.
Regarding #1, I used tiny rare earth magnets to keep my caliper box closed. A case of personal choice. Nice video.
Omg, the people that get upset at other people's contribution to the collective good will never cease to infuriate me. I know I don't have to tell ya, but keep doing you, Jimmy. Never have to explain nor defend yourself to those of us who love ya.
The upset folks may be as soft as the felt you didn’t need. Thank you Jimmy D. For the project using hand/power/automated tools from your shop. I don’t have them all but appreciate the examples so I might do the automated parts by hand some day or just appreciate the advancement as I’m not in production more than a one a one off.
I read it, Jimmy. lol
No need to tell me twice.
(Honestly, I was just curious about the wood type. But I read your descriptions more often than most since you rarely speak in-video and I'm always curious for more information.)
goshdangit now i need as laser cutter. beautiful work Jimmy!
Nothing your CNC couldn't do ;)
@@Nailuj420 doing this with the maho is like hunting rabbits with a bazooka, it works but a bit overkill
ToT my hero 😄
It is just an excuse to buy something else, lol.
This smells like a new project. Maybe a combination of your old router with a pimped up laser pointer?
I want to make boxes like these for all our tools! Great work as usual, Jimmy!
I'd love to see what you could come up with!
I mean come on!!!! Jimmy always makes things so accessible. I thought ‘yeh nobody could do this without a CNC’ then he just traces around the object cut the bottom off and bandsaws the insert. Amazing. So inspirational.
Hats off for the 5:55 This Old Tony cameo ahahah
I didn't spot that!
This Old Tony was a Secret Santa to Colin Furze.

Start @ 5 minutes, 56 seconds.
Just watched the videos back-to-back, that's why I catched it
Here's that part of his video: czcams.com/video/f9qN9LIChh4/video.html
I was wondering how the top and bottom would join together, i really like the rabbet technique you used. You made a beautiful box my friend.
I saw the thumbnail and thought, he’s really getting into his CNC. Then I wondered if he still uses the bandsaw like he used to for quick stuff. Then I watched the video 👍🏻
50 years later Jimmy's grandkids will be posting this on r/machinist, who can identify this case? Seems like it was made by Starrett but I can't find it in the catalog.
And one of us who is still around and half senile will make a snide, sarcastic, troll of a reply along the lines of "Nice case, shame Starrett never had those kind of standards".
Sir I have been watching you for the past 5 years. I love learning different approaches and new techniques, btw the content is one of my favorite on YT
Thanks Mr. DiResta for sharing your time and talents! Your a original.
Fits like a glove and looks great! Simple, elegant, and functional. Thanks for sharing!
The dark wood match with the Lazer cut, it's a beautiful final touch.
The wood is just such a beautiful color. Who couldn't like that? Well done.
Love these builds. As a tool lover and not a great maker these r the projects I cut my teeth on learning. Thanks heaps jimmy keep these quick simple builds coming, can watch this stuff for hours.
Thanks Jimmy, your videos always add to nice Sundays. Have a great New Year! 🌲🌲🌲
Man the way your able to take so many different avenues in order to make what’s in your head come to life is astonishing. Love ya brother👊🏻💚
Jimmy, always great to find your vids again. Truly an inspiration for those of us still working for the man.. :) The simple construction method of the box is illuminating. Thanks for sharing!
really nice work, Jimmy. It is a big improvement over what they usually come in. I constantly learn new techniques watching you work.
Just lovely work Jimmy! Really inspiring!
I love it.
You make it look so easy!
Thanks for sharing
I worked for an old guy one time who deserves something this nice.
Thanks Jimmy. I looked at my plastic factory case and now I want to create one like this. Beautiful work!
Your assembly table flexes so much. You make amazing things for using a sponge as a work surface.
In the good old days they would have come from the factory in a case like that.
Exactly. Back when you could figure out exactly how something worked by taking it apart with a socket set and a couple of screw drivers. I'd say it was so you could easily access anything if you needed to fix it, but back in those days things were built to last. I sound old. Get off my lawn!
@@BoomerKeith1 I am old, remember everything you said, agree with it and back up “Get off my lawn” with a shotgun. 😂
I have one at work that did.
You make the bandsaw look so easy! Love watching you work
Simple, but classy. Looks great.
Yes. Classic diresta woodworking vid. Love it!!
Watch it 3 times in a row and learned 10 times the knowledge I had before. Stay well Taylor , Willie , 2 and 4 legged animals and you my brother
Splendido lavoro! Sei Bravissimo!
The bandsaw moves at 3 minutes reminded me of that video you made explaining about acquiring your dad's moves. Thanks for sharing your skills with us.
Always a pleasure watching your jobs, keep up the good work.
Love this fella's work...
Always top class. You can't beat DiResta Built items.
Well done, Jimbo.
This is eye candy!! Thank you for sharing!!
I love your works with wood! happy holidays Jimmy!
Wow beautiful case!!! You are a master with the bandsaw!!!
I’ve made a few projects from ipe leftover from my deck. It is a fun wood to work with. You are one of the few channels that works with it. It is such a substantial wood that it is gratifying working with it.
Yeeees! getting back to the things we love to see you make.
Great job on the case. Thanks for sharing my friend.
Beautiful case Jimmy! Happy New Year to you and your family! Be well & stay safe. 👍😉
Beautiful box Jimmy Piece of Art.
Sweet little project, Jimmy. I just invested in a small Laser and am excited to give your project a try. Thanks for the years of inspiration. Cheers.
A thing of beauty. The calipers' nice too
Man the craftsmanship is awesome good job
Starrett products, including there boxes are legit, and this one certainly lives up to there product! Great job!
Really amazing, I agree it could use some felt for both decorative and functional use, but still stunning in its current state!
Hermoso trabajo y muy linda la madera!😉👍
Super build Jimmy...love the process. Thanks for the Christmas present :-)
Man....when that finish went on, ugh that wood looks stunning 👏🏾 love your videos!
كل ما تقدمه يدل على براعتك في عملك اتمنى لك التوفيق 🌹
nice work. I love the way you did the lid.
Awesome case, looks great.
Happy holidays to you and your family. Hope the new year kicks ass for you. Love the content as always. Great work.
Beautiful. Great way to make a presentation box.
Well done Jimmy. I love my Starrett Tools
Such a beautiful case for such a beautiful tool! Amazing as always Jimmy!
fine job. a GOD given skill
Starrett should be paying you! Beautiful Craftsmanship👍👍👍
Classic Diresta. ❤️
A real artist you are🙏🏻💯
Beautiful 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏merry Christmas Jimmy
Beautiful Jimmy! Hope you and the family had a good, Merry Christmas!
Beautiful box & so time saving and efficient to have a clear, instantly recognised place for valued tools to live. No magnets is so right too, my MacBook air MagSafe power connector attracts near invisible steel filings/grindings and these stop the connector seating and I have to clean them away with sticky tape regularly. Thanks for sharing!
Stunning workmanship, fit and finish. I have no idea why I’ve never thought of it before, but 8:02 temporary clearance plate is genius. So simple. That’s why you’re the best mate. 👏🇦🇺
I have been needed to make one of these for my calipers. Thanks Jimmy for another great video 👍😀
what a nice project and what a set of hands
That is a work of art. I think it’s perfect just the way you made it. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺
That was clever using the bandsaw for that cut-out - sweet build, nice caliper!
Beautifully done. I live the way you did the lid lip edging, might use that method myself. Well done sir
I have a similar build with felt and neodymium magnets that have a gap to reduce the grab. Beautiful!
Magnet.
Actually I just wanted to say how much I really enjoy the fitzall podcast. Take care and Happy New Year everyone.
very beautiful, inspiring project
Very nice Sir, the grain and colour is gorgeous. Top vid as always. Happy New year to you and all your family and friends. 🇬🇧
Very nice! I liked that you made it without using a CNC router. Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful project! You’re an inspiration. Whether it’s a “free” video, sponsored video, every time I pull out my DiResta ice pick or reciting “if it looks straight it is straight” every time I pass by your poster hanging on my wall. The value and inspiration you pass on through your videos and supporting content for me far out weighs what products I’ve purchased to support your efforts. Thank you for sharing, growing and continuing to inspire in-spite of the baby trolls.
Back to basics always. Nice.
Espectacular amigo!!!!!
When you initially showed this box on Instagram, I would have never guessed this was how it was made. So cool... so many techniques. Loved this.
Capricho é tudo!
HAPPY NEW YEAR to France ! et bonne continuation !!
Having been a viewer of Mr Diresta since his ‘Gattar’ video. So glad he’s doing what he loves and making not just financial gain but bringing some tips and sharing his life long learnt skills to many. Thanks for everything Jimmy
Thank You 🙏🏼
You definitely should have used magnets to keep the lid closed 😉😉
Magnets and tools dont go well together. They would be covered in metal dust and chips all the time.

Absolutely beautiful work!
Very cool! Nice work!
Gorgeous!!
I just love when you use the hand plain. I use it. YOU THE MAN JIMMY!! Merry Christmas brotha!
Beautiful as usual!!!!!!
wow! super quality. 👍
Another beautiful job Mr D. Merry Christmas to you and yours✌🏼
Una caja elegante y práctica a la altura del calibre que guarda!!👌👍
An elegant and practical box at the height of the caliber it keeps !! 👌👍
Thank you !! Jimmy , always learnig from your videos
Gorgeous!
Amazing as always.
Fantastic build.
Beautiful work, Jimmy! 😃
Really amazing looking box!
Happy new year! And stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Beautiful work!
Watching This Old Tony while working. Nice.
Very nice Jimmy - great to see something like that cut out the old-school way instead of with a CNC.
Sometimes you just want to make nice things for your nice things am I right? Well done.
Awesome work as always! 👍🏻
Excellent JD. 👍
