For this metalworking project I make a brass Gavel for my buddy that just became a federal judge! I use many traditional methods I’ve been learning and practicing .. and some not so traditional. See if you can point them out in the comments below!

When you go into slow motion suddenly - there is now so much tension in my head thinking something is going to go wrong. It's suspenseful!
Me too, I was ready for something to go flying off the lathe!
Machining brass freehand with a razorblade is the most diresta thing I've seen all month.
Simplicity is the best answer sometimes.
Every time the video slows down I get nervous waiting for an accident to happen. Lol
SAME!
SAME!
It scared me him using that razor blade as a smoothing device 😫
ahah me too!
Same here.
that gave me some "old time diresta" feels, nice!
Not going to lie,,, this is the Jimmy I fell in love with,,
Now it’s just ads and sales pitches... I don’t think he’s made something for fun in the last few years p
**baby voice** this guy has to.... *sniffles*....make money to survive. 😭
Tommy pouty I have fun ever day. I make fun every day. And money.
Aww jimmy shillresta and his rattling pan got upset.
@@tommypouncey5667 thb i don't get it; i saw no ads (premium
Coronavirus: In these uncertain times... DiResta:
That's a pro-move right there.
This could go wrong in so many ways AHAHHAHAHAHHA
That's nothing - the skew chisel without tool rest at the end is crazy. I have soiled my pants more than once with this tool - on the wood lathe WITH a tool rest....
Still cant believe what I saw. And I idiot sandpaper stuff until my hands are wrinkly.
Fun fact: When you say HAMMER in germany, its either the tool, OR a statement like KILLER/HOT/AWESOME.
Not that anyone asked for it, just had to think of it.
Machinists: You can't turn brass with a razor blade.
Jimmy: Watch this.
Hey, a video sponsor that actually makes sense with the video. That's rare nowadays.
Very true .. those "skills****" promotions don't really scream "I know what I'm doing".
3:43 😳 Why get so close, your beards going to get caught!😂😂😂 It's the brush!
Perfect combination of machine skills and artistry. Excellent!
This channel and the Essential Craftsman’s channel have greatly inspired me (and certainly many others). Thanks for the great work you do, Jimmy.
I love to watch a true craftsman with a lathe , It amazes me what you can do with one great job and project 👍
Nice treat for a gray Sunday...a Diresta video ..thanks. I like your style and am in awe of your talent and skill!
Really nice work. That was so cool to watch. Thank you.
Congrats to your friend, and thanks for sharing the versatility of the simple boxcutter blade!
One of the most talented and nicest guys ever!!
I learned a couple of new tricks on this one, especially threading on the lathe. Thanks!
I’ll never get sick of these videos
It was super satisfying watching you turn that metal... super sleek finished product!
This is why I like your style. You think so far outside the box, you throw the box away and just have fun.
I was having creative constipation - watching this got me back in the right headspace. Great video - thank you Jimmy!
Jimmy " I'll just go to my drawer of brass rods " :-))
This is so satisfying watching you turn that brass on a lathe especially by hand with a razor blade.
You've got a lot of brass making such a great looking gavel.
Brilliant machining
Hello Jimmy, as always your work has impressed me and I'm surprised. You Are A Master! Thank's. Like it.
Awesome video. Thanks Jimmy.
Through so much hard work and talent from Jimmy and others like him, Justice, and art, will be served. Here's to the next American renaissance!!!
Excellent job with some very interesting techniques...hats off...top
Perfection. Years of skills shown in 15 minutes. 🙌
That trick at 11:48 of holding the tap vertical with the drill press is inspired. This is what I like about your vids Jimmy!
I think this video is a good example of why historically people leave grumpy comments on CNC videos. We are all spoiled with being able to see the high-level of craftsmanship as it's happening. Not that the craftsmanship isn't there in CNC projects, it's just much less visible.
Another banger from Diresta
Very pretty result!
I enjoyed watching the video edits on Instagram. It made me appreciate the video more and look for the edit points. Great work as always.
Court is now in session with the Honorable James Diresta presiding. Well done!
That thing gives new meaning to dropping the hammer of justice excellent work my friend!
Nicely done. Great gavel.
I feel like I need to appear in that courtroom to hear that AMAZING gavel sound. BeUtiful as always!
Awesome work Jimmy! 😃👍🏻👊🏻 ..... You really did it justice! 😉..... 🧑🏻⚖️⚖️
Great job Jimmy. Hope your enjoying you summer.
This is a truly wonderful video, Jimmy. Thank you for sharing. Stay safe brother. All the best from North London UK
Beautiful mallet and block.
Another masterpiece, great work as always 👍🏻
Hear Ye HEAR Ye the courts in session the Honorable James DiResta presiding.. Beautiful my brother .. Stay well Taylor and Willie and you my brother
Love the gavel 👍👍
It's like a rough arse clickspring. Love it
Excellent work!!! 👍
I’ve only done very basic lathing without much direction, and you’ve just shown me a basic way to make very nice curves and tapers. I think that freehand razor blade sculpting is brilliant
Cool hand work on brass love me some Starrett tools and made in USA thanks for the vid
They'll be hearing that in the back of the courtroom! Beautiful! And using a razor? Epic!
Perfect work 👌👌🙏🙏🙏
I can see you use the “hammer till it’s true” method when indicating in the lathe chuck.
Making things looks so fun. Your imagination is your limit. Except your imagination is unlimited!
Well done Jimmy been following your work since early 2000
Thank you 🙏🏼
Kid's day in argentina, and this video is my gift!!! Cool!!
This is beautiful Jimmy.
I learned many things by watching jimmys videos. I remember those segment from trash to cash.
Nice work.
Jimmy awesome video as always
Really amazing work, Jimmy! 😃
My father watched with me (he loves work with the lathe) and he said it couldn't be nicer! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Hear ye, Hear ye! This machinist class is now in session! the Hon. Jimmy Diresta presiding! All rise!
Have to say, I thumped myself on the forehead when I saw the centering tool on the backside of the tap! But of course! Jimmy always teaches me something new!
The style of the video (not to mention the end product itself) reminded me of the hardwood mallet you did for Make in 2013. I dunno if maybe I have a thing with mallets, but I found myself feeling that same sense of “where is this going? 😃” and then that big payoff where it all *clicks*. For those wondering, this is Classic DiResta 🤘🏻
Come on Jimmy,be honest with us you really didn't have a plan when you started making this gavel, but the juices started to flow and another masterpiece is created.Thank you so much for allowing us to look over your shoulder once again,I am continiously inspired by your inspirations🤗🤗🤗
I had a sketch. Not very tight one
Cool project! Always learn something watching your vids- your use of a razor to finish curves was unique. Great to hear of the special offer with Starrett. Still producing quality tools here. When allowed take a plant tour. In the meantime NYC CNC filmed one a few years ago. (We have added considerable amount of modern machinery, but still have some old ones producing)!
Beautiful work Jimmy!
If love to see a tiny anvil as a gavel block! 😄
Love the hand sculpted aspects, reminds me of the brass chess pieces you made. I noticed you used the side of the utility blade and not just the edge.
Sensacional. Técnicas fantásticas e acabamento perfeito, parabéns...
While the craftsmanship in the end product is as outstanding as usual, the video storytelling has reached a new height. Bravo, sir!
Thank you 🙏🏼
Nice work!
I think the key to keep people watching is to up the sketch-factor every other minute or so, well done!
Edited perfectly to keep my day moving! Hammer Time!
My senses tell me that this is performing 1/10 of your last videos. A beauty!
Interesting design & materials with elegant, gentle & decisive execution on the lathe. In the UK gavels are often made of Box wood, both the head & the base, but this has a more higher pitched component to it which is interesting. Just hope the judge does not forget where his/her non-hammer hand is when dealing with disorders in court and clouts it by mistake. If ever does will not need reminding a second time. Thanks for sharing!
Love and support from Pakistan.
Keep that spirit alive Jimmy, an inspiration to me always.
Wow, really shows how soft brass is. Never thought a razor blade would work.
Second best 15 minutes of the day
Just lovely! If I had a metal lathe, all I’d be making would be mallets and hammers...
Very nice
I love the "difference" between Abomb's approach and Jimmy's more artistic, by eye approach. I like both but it's interesting to see both artisan's way of working. Great content. Thanks. Paul
Everything is amazing but my ocd with things can't help but see the irony in advertising precision tools shortly after making the threads nonconcentric with the rest of the handle

Everybody stand up!! The Honorable Diresta presides over the court!!! xaxaxa
Neet trick with the box cutter blade @Jimmy Diresta
I am guilty , of loving this video!
Will Come in Handy when judging the "GREAT GUITAR BUILD OFF"!
classic Diresta ;-)
Pretty sweet
Hermoso trabajo como nos tienes acostumbrados, saludos maestro desde Venezuela.
Um gênio 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Beautiful work. A nice counterbore in the head would make the handle disappear into when screwed tight. Looks great. 👍🏻👍🏻
DAMN Nice work as ALWAYS Bro ! 🤟🏼✌🏼
Nice!
The band saw and lathe God back at it again making this awesome piece.
Very cool
This is for when people in the court room are getting extra rowdy, the judge hits his desk with this shit people are gonna hear it for sure.
Excelente
Jimmy, technique or no technique, you are still the best.. Keep up the great job... I thought you are going to buff the gavel.
Shine baby, shine!! Jimmy at It’s best!!!
Vintage Diresta, it takes brass balls working with that razor!
SO AWESOME! You need the wooden base though so you can get that dull loud thud when the judge bangs the gavel down. Still badass though. 🤙🏼
