Another amazing video, Redbeard. I love the Florida trail. It was a great trail to hike when I lived down there. Thanks for sharing.
People need not worry about snakes and stuff when they're on the trail; you're not their food. Remember people: animals want nothing to do with you when you're out there. No need to be worried.
Awesome looking trail. I was hoping you'd run into one of those giant pythons. Maybe on another day!
Nice trail man! Most people wouldn't slog through that for a hike but i admire your resolve. I know a few who've attempted that same trail but gave up after days of not being able to handle wet feet. If the hikers out there can't handle this, they are gonna have a rude awakening for something like the AT. Don't get me wrong, you wont experience this much water on the feet on the AT but its not far off when you go through 3 to 5 to sometime a week of straight rain. My hats of to you brother for showing a good bit of what the Florida trail can be like! Hike on RedBeard!
Great section of the FT. It's incredible to think of all the landscapes across the US- From swamp to dense forests to rocky mountains...we've got it all!
Hey man, glad to see you made it on the trail. You were a day behind us and camped in the same spot we did. (I left the big peace sign for you guys in the fire pit) We actually met for a second on the first day of the kick off ( short dude, long hair) We ended up walking all the way to i-75 and the trail only got more wet as we got closer to the end. It was super challenging but definitely worth it in the end. Love your videos and am super happy you were able to document at least a section of the trail! We didn't take any cameras so its awesome to watch this video. You have an awesome channel. Keep up the good work and thanks for all the content.
Right on man!! I am doing Big Shoals this weekend, we're doing a 33 mile loop. I Start my AT thru hike March 7. Super stoked about it!! Happy hiking man!!
Love it! Glad to hear Zpacks give the FT some home trail love!
It's an incredible trail and we are happy to be able to experience it.
Wow, love the nature.. thanks a lot for this video show buddy ;D
best, Max GREEN from Berlin City
Great video!
Looks like a great way to get jungle rot. I live in mobile and if you don't dry those feet here, it happens. Will, I am really loving your trail videos. Very inspiring. Gearing up now. Soon I will hit the trails. I have been binge watching these vids. Keep 'em coming.
Very cool man I need to check FT out looks like a completely new experience
welcome to the swamp!!
It is a great place to hike and watch the stars at night. Every time there is a meteor shower if it is not raining I camp there. I think other than some sections of the everglades waterway this is the most remote place in Florida. The Brooks Cascadia seem to work very well on these wet conditions. I have taken mine lots of times in hikes like this one and they have hold very well, the material dry fast and is quite resistant other than worn soles the shoes are the best I have use for swamps.
Very Unique - Thanks for sharing!
Cool to see you following the orange blazes! I hike the Econfina section of the trail in the panhandle. Come up and try it. It is completely different.
You know I will! Very soon!
Looked like a great hike thanks for sharing atb John
Pretty darn cool man! Probably pretty freaky in the beginning at first about the crocks..
Awesome !! That's my back yard I did the 30 mile segment through BC when I did it the first 17 miles were bone dry ... We hiked up to 13 mile camp which is really 17 miles then did the last 13 the following day I would say after 13 miles camp when u hit the prairies it becomes tough with the mud .
I agree that once you're feet are wet it actually feels better to keep them in the water.
I just did a 20-mile section of the ocean-to-lake portion of the FT and it was just as wet. Sorry I couldn't have joined you for this one.
Just hiked the Citrus Trail near Inverness, FL. It's a dry trail with some slight elevation change, so no water slogging. 34 miles of loop trail off of the Florida Trail. I highly recommend it to you since you are in Florida now. It does require a permit which is free.
id say you need a good pair of breathable hip waders for this section..lmao..maybe start making them in cuben fiber..lol
Another great RedBeard adventure ! How did your Cascadias hold up? Any FT gear reviews/recommendations ? Any plans to do Lake to Ocean ? I have found yours, Gator Miller, Dixie, Seven and Sam I Am great (varying) perspectives for planning a Thru hike. Well done !! THANKS.
That's great you guys are trying to complete the Florida trail. I've done parts on North Florida along the Suwannee and man the southern portion looks pretty difficult with all the water. Hope you get yourself some darntuff socks. Lol. What happened with the sock situation?
Andy
Is this the same tent that you used on the PCT? Is Daniel almost ready to hike again.? I still go back to watch some of your AT videos. Great Videos! Thanks for sharing! Bob
I didn't know about this trail of water before. It looks like hammock country
Welcome to Florida, the Australia of the US, lol. I've hiked many miles on the FT, lots of beautiful nature here you won't find on any other trails. The terrain is flat and you don't get the cool views of the AT or PCT but the amount of wildlife you'll see is staggering. There's tons of natural springs once you get further north as well. I'm leaving for a 4 trip up in the western corridor in a few days. Happy Hikes!!!!
Why do you call it the Australia of the US?
All of the poisonous things and high temperatures.
After doing a couple hundred miles of these trails, my best advice is to wear minimalist trail shoes like those offered by merrel and New Balance. A pair of MT10's have lasted me through 4 seasons and kept me light on my feet. Ask anyone who hikes with me, they are amazed at how much faster and easier I move through the water. And the best solution for wet socks is to go sockless! Many of these types of shoes are designed to be worn with no socks, just be sure to condition your feet to them before setting out on a long hike.
Living down here in S. Florida that doesn't look fun to me Will. When we get heavy rains I have to walk through something similar to get to my mail box a 1/4 mile away. Watch out for the red ants that sometimes float by in clumps and cling to anything dry that passes by. Great video though.
What kind of shoes for this wet trail? Water moccasins?
+Henry S That is danged funny!!!
Braver than me sir. :) I'm Australian so the beasties don't worry me so much bit I'm a complete wimp when it comes to swamps, probably because I'm a leech magnet.
hey since you're in Florida now, you should head up to Torreya. I'm currently training there for my AT thru in April. It's one of the few places in Florida where you feel like you could be in north Georgia instead, with decent climbs.
Thanks for the info I will check it out for sure. I've never heard of it.
oh i know ms J and mover .... what up mover
just watched your entire AT journey and it pushed me and my gf to wanna take the journey. any tips or hints?
What was it like hiking that many miles in the water? this was a cool trail.
It mostly dry land , like 10 of the 34 miles will be water and less in the dry season
Nice! Man this makes me miss Florida. But I was back for Christmas and it was HOT!
If you liked this, there is an old tram trail off Janes Scenic Drive that leads to a camp spot. Also, you can hike areas like this on the access point for Big Cypress on I75. A smaller trail, Gatorhook will get you wet as well. :)
i live in the Okefenokee swamp in ga ,so I grew up seeing views like this how does it compare to the beauty of the veiws you have seen in the a.t and the p.c.t I feel like it may not be as rewarding how do you feel about it
The swamp is special but it's hard to beat the mountains to me. But that's just my personal feelings.
Is there much difference between the solplex and duplex
Difference between alligators and crocodiles ... One while see you later and the other will see you in a while.
Now that was funny!
Anyone wear chacos sandals or teva sandals during the hike
When do you think you'll complete the PCT?
I will be re hiking the entire PCT in the near future. Probably within the next 3 years.
what kind do u recommend for wear on your feet when traveling through these conditions?
My Brooks Cascadia 11s work great paired with thin socks. I use Wigwam Triathlete socks.
What time of the year is this?, I have understood in winter is less muddy and more dry and enjoyable the big cypress
but in the summer nobody is there , I'm always the only one out there , and the heat sucks but I rather be there alone
This was in January. Doesn't matter what time of year you will get wet but hey it's all apart of the adventure and what makes it special.
I can't do that. To many snakes.
Water.... was it brackish? able to filter?? or did you carry in?
It's fresh , even in the dry season you can find water to filter in the cypress domes , I bring my water
Thanks
What are you doing for water? Is it drinkable? Or is it too salty?
Packed in a couple liters
+Will “Red Beard” Wood I wonder how thru hikers manage?
is this trail south of 41 or north ?
north from 41 oasis Visitor center to mile marker 63 on alligator alley
Not so sure about this one man. Seems like I could replicate this hike at my local lake, river, pond or bathtub. Just seems miserable.
are we suppost to kill the pythons. they are not indigenous?
There is actually a hunting season down here. They pay you for killing them.
seems miserable.
How would we know you saw stars. This looks like a two hour day hike. You never showed your camp, fire, sunset, nothing. I call hoax.
