Want to thank you guys for putting together one of the best JMT documentaries I have watched, and I have watched a few. I am 75 years old and I too am a Thru Hiker. I accomplished that when I was 53 over 22 years ago. As you can guess, I will never again see the sunrise on the top of Whitney. However I did do a 6 day hike with my daughter to the top of Whitney when I was 60 years old, and for the last time. But I still can easily re-live the splendor of the trial by watch videos like this. It is always interesting to see what trials and tribulations will come with each video I watch. I want to congratulate on truly having the funniest video of all. Your humor reminds me so much of the sense of humor that my brother and I experience. We can easily get into this non-sensical world just like your 800-Solution Channel which was hilarious. And I totally identify with your Rage hiking. I experienced that for the first time going over Cathedral Pass and it helped immensely! Thanks again and welcome to the “club”
thank you so much for the high compliments. so glad you got to do whitney with your daughter -- that sounds like a defining experience. we met some guys in their ~70s on the west coast trail, which has less elevation than jmt and is a bit more palatable. something to consider!
@HankLeukart have you got or played the game Trailblazer - the John Muir Trail Yet? Highly recommended and thankyou for this as there is now a world of new fans due to that game, that will find this.
I love the friendship you have with your brother. There’s no better friend than your own siblings.
yes, it's quite lucky for us to be able to go on trips together every year
Watched 5 minutes of this documentary, remembered what it was like and how I felt the first time I hiked up the Nevada Falls trail, the memories of how incredible and freeing life felt at that moment are flooding back. I think I'll wait on watching the rest of this documentary until I do the hike myself. Don't want to spoil to beauty of it before I go. Thanks for the reminder guys.
Glad you enjoyed the beginning -- I hope you get a chance to do the trail and finish the film!
The perfect documentary! Beautiful footage, great music, humor, food, and heart all in one package. Loved it!
thanks so much, christina! happy you liked watching it!
Love love love this video! Loved the history, the wit, the music, the banter, the beautiful scenes. 🥾❤️
Glad you enjoyed it!
Okay this is awesome but y’all are nerds and I’m living for it!! Love that you are do this every year! My dad and I will hike the JMT this summer and really am digging the idea of backpacking with my twin - we live cross country so that would be a ton of fun!
yeah, you should definitely do it! it's a great trip!
Wow, this documentary about two brothers hiking the JMT was absolutely amazing! The way they captured the trail's beauty and history was really impressive. It was clear that these two brothers have a deep connection and love for hiking, which made the video even more special. The shots of the mountains and lakes were breathtaking, and I felt like I was right there with them on the trail. This video was really well done and I'm so glad I stumbled upon it on CZcams. It's definitely worth a watch for anyone who loves hiking or just wants to appreciate the beauty of nature. It is truly a beautiful experience to witness the bond that is forged between two brothers as they complete a challenging feat together.
“Shared pain is lessened; shared joy, increased - this we do refute entropy” -Spider Robinson
thank you so much for your kind words! it sounds like you really understood and enjoyed what we were going for, and we really appreciate that!
I just have to say what an awesome video, I couldn’t stop watching it. The way you captured your experiences as well as the scenery was amazing. I can’t wait to see it with my own eyes!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I have hiked a good part of the JMT but your humor is such an awesome addition. Thanks for sharing your hike with us.
thank so much, joni! i'm so happy you enjoyed it!!
Loved this movie! You two are hilarious together and it was so enjoyable to watch. Thank you for sharing!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I've watched so many JMT and PCT documentaries, and this is by far my favorite. You've really captured the spirit of what these adventures are at their best (in my opinion anyway), and it really touched me. I appreciate your reverence for nature, your humor, your interest in sharing glimpses of history along with your own commentary, your bond as brothers and travel partners, the awe and beauty of nature, and how you faced the pain and challenges while celebrating the totality of the experience. Thank you for sharing!
Elisha, what a kind comment! Thanks so much for watching, and we're so happy to here how much you loved the film. I shared with my brother too, and he was so happy to hear your feedback. I hope you get a chance to do a big thruhike! -Hank
Of all the videos we have watched of folks doing the JMT we think this was the most informative and enjoyable. It’s a place that we may never get to see for ourselves as our adventures are closer to home in the UK but we appreciate the stunning scenery and the sense of achievement crossing through that awesome environment. The humour was great. Thanks for a superb video.
Thank you so much! So happy you enjoyed it! We need to get to Scotland for some trips soon!
That Ansel Adams photo transition was good!
Great video! I can't wait to get my own JMT adventure on the calendar!
This is the greatest backpacking/thru hike documentary ever! You guys are so real! And hilarious 😂
aw thanks jessi! so glad you liked it!
Great Documentary, beautiful photography! You guys are naturals at this. I don't know what you do for a living, but you could make it as film makers! Cheers.
thank you! yes, i am actually a pro tv producer and filmmaker :)
Epic. I have seven (7) blood brother and 2 sisters from one set of parents, I can only imagine the 10 of us hiking together like this, let alone 4 or5. Well done!
thank you! so glad you liked it, and i hope you get a chance to hike with at least a few of those siblings
Wow! An incredibly beautiful, informative, funny, and deeply moving video. I’m glad you brought me along on this video journey! Thank you!
Thank you so much!
Thoroughly enjoyed your video! I haven't done the hike yet but it's been on my bucket list for a long time. Your video captured the essence of the JMT and what it takes to complete the hike. You brothers are so very fortunate that you can do this together and your humor and positive outlook helped make the trip all the better. Hey guys, treasure this and other videos of you two hiking together because there will come a day when one of you will be gone and the other will carry on. There will be this memory of a special hike and a special relationship that few get to experience.
I'm really glad you enjoyed the video and felt inspired by our journey! Your kind words about our bond and the memories we're creating together mean a lot to us - we love these trips!
This is great that brothers can be so close to do such a journey together! An exellent self-documented journey! The music is great -- pumping and inspiring you up!
I enjoyed the photography, the music, the editing, the face to the camera reflections, the brotherly humor and the historical perspective. Well done. it was captivating.
thanks so much Stanley!
you communicated your sense of discovery, effort, adventure, frustration and excitement with stunning visuals.
thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Fantastic film, & trip. You must have traveled late Sept is my guess given the closure of Red’s. That time frame alone made your film far more unique than any other JMT video. That solitude must have been spectacular. Congrats!
One of the VERY BEST CZcams hiking videos I've watched. If we could give it a rating, you'd get 5 of 5 stars.
The content is excellent. Liked that you included history and Native American contributions. I'm a history fan so...I would have enjoyed even more. Your personal comments were interesting and apropos. In addition to the great content, the photography, audio AND music selections were top notch. I'm going to incorporate "Where's that pass" into my own future backpacking trips.
Singing? I don't want to torture my fellow hikers but looked like good fun- I will have to try regardless.
AND...I can't wait to try Fizzy Colas!!! If they're as good as you made them out to be, they'll be a new addition to all future trips.
Thanks for the effort and quality you put into making this video. I'm going to check out more of your work.
I can't recommend this video highly enough.
👍👍
Thanks so much for your stellar review, Peter! It's always difficult to figure out the right blend of history vs. action but I'm happy you enjoyed the history stuff. I spent a long time reading John Muir's journals in attempt to write something fair. Just a warning: Where's That Pass? is a frustrating game in the Sierra. :) If you're looking for similar hikes, you might want to watch my Tour du Mont Blanc movie czcams.com/video/LpDIdJEAouk/video.html. Hank, your video on the Camino Frances was a big motivator for me to do a section of that trail. You really captured the Camino experience. With this video of you and your brother you have really captured the experience of through hiking the JMT. I hope to follow in your footsteps on that magnificent trail someday. Thanks to both of you!
So glad you like the videos! I hope you get a chance to do the JMT!
Thanks for taking the time and effort to film and narrate your expedition. I love the relationship between you and your brother. And you had me cracking up so many times, especially the game show called where is .that pass? I have summitted Mount Whitney five times, and had planned to do the JMT, but that plan fell through when I got a job offer in my career. I should have done the hike and postponed the start of my career 😮
Glad you enjoyed it!
That documentary was absolutely beautiful! 💗
I like how you wove in some history at the beginning and end and noted the wilderness names along the way.
Starting that late in the season, it looks like you (almost) had the trail to yourselves. 😁
With about 12 hours of daylight (8 hours of direct sunlight) per day, not much time for breaks along the way.
I LOVE the stable 4K footage with nice audio with a wind guard, which most vloggers forget.
It looked really nice on my 2K 27" true-color display. I can't wait to watch it again on my 50" 4K Samsung LCD.
I carried 7 days of food while hiking the 100 Mile Wilderness Sept. 2021. IDK how you carried 11 days? 😳
With the record snow-pack, I'm guessing the trail won't open until July this year. I hope I'm wrong.
I turned 60 last year and had a lottery ticket for a June 19 departure but could not make it. I will keep trying.
Thank you so much for the kind words! So glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, I like watching this one on my big 4K TV. The camera we used looks so good. Yeah, 11 days of food is the most we've ever carried. We were totally out of food on the way down from Whitney though except a couple bars!
@@HankLeukart You know your food estimate was correct when you have just one or two energy bars left in your pack at the end. You can then eat those while waiting for your ride. 👍
Fantastic video! Loved the presentation and all the sights along the way
glad you liked it!
Hank iv been watching you since I was really little you’ve helped me through some really rough times in my life so just wanted to say thanks and keep up the great work
So happy you've enjoyed all the videos!
Awesome job! Best John Muir trail video I have seen so far!
Wow, thanks, Jackie! So happy you enjoyed it!
You Guys Are Alot Of Fun Sure Wish I Was There With You Guys To Really Enjoy This Beautiful Freezing Cold Adventure Of Gods Creation You Bith Are So Blessed To Journey This❤😂 God Bless You Both❤😂
so glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful!!!! Thank you for sharing you journey. There is no wall between humans and nature.
Thank you! So glad you liked it!
Thanks for sharing your adventure. I have just discovered US trails. I think John Muir it is going to be my next trail thru.
it's a great one! let me know if you have any questions
Great Vid, thank you so much for this little masterpiece!!!
so glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for sharing this history of the JMT! After watching your wonderful adventure, I definitely have added this beautiful place to one of the places I would love to hike! What great memories you were able to share with your brother!
thank you!
Delightful, gentlemen, thank you for sharing!
thanks rose! so glad you liked it!
Well done guys. Enjoyed the vid and appreciate the time and effort put into this!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Well done! Very much enjoyed watching this documentary:))
so glad you liked it, leece! your rae lakes video is cool too :)
Nicely done, gentlemen. Congratulations on your thru-hike.
thank you!
Thanks you guys. You are great together and I thoroughly enjoyed the trip with you. I wish I could do that trip but I'm getting too old to do it now. I will pretend I went there with you. I have been going to the Sierras my whole life but never in the wilderness like you did. It is so beautiful and what a long journey that you can look back on for the rest of your lives. Thank you for bringing us with you. Blessings. I will see what other trips you guys have done. Dan. Phoenix, Arizona.
hey, dan! thanks so much for your nice message! we're really glad you enjoyed the video, and we hope you still get chances to visit the sierra when you can. it's an amazing place!
You guys are hilarious! I really enjoyed your video, great job! Your game of "Where's That Pass?" was so right on.... I recall coming up to Glen Pass (from the South side)... could not make out where the heck the pass was.... until I saw the little ant-people coming down the switchbacks.... that was my "Holy Mother of God" moment.... :)
Thanks Vicki, so glad you liked it! Yeah, those passes are pretty crazy!
Thank you guys for sharing your sharing-it was a great hike.
thank you!
Terrific. I've never watched such a beautiful hiking docu that offered so much information and, at the same time, made me laugh throughout the film. You two are so much fun. Thank you for such a great video. Wishing you more safe adventures. Blessings
Glad you enjoyed it!
So far, I really like your documentary. I can tell that it is a good one. I'm a little confused about your mileage day one and two. Until you leave TM at LC . 23 miles total. That is correct if you stayed on the JMT and camped at the backpacking camp. I'm extremely accurate about true mileage, section mileage, moving speed, overall speed, and resting time. I realized that if you don't pause your GPS when you stop moving, it keeps adding mileage to your total distance. My girlfriend always had 3 to 4 miles than me at the end of our 20 mile average days. We got into arguments about it. I pause mine, she let hers run. She wiggles around so much that the satellites counted her wiggles as mileage 😂. I'm not making this up. We have the same GARMIN GPS. My mileage from HI to CR to Sunrise Lakes is 15.1 miles. Strenuous 1st day. 5.3 to TM 1.7 to LCTH, 10.8 to UL Lake. Just 2.6 below DP Day 2. Mileage varies alot depending on how it is measured. Harrison and Nat Geo maps are pretty darn accurate.
Thanks I'm going to watch the rest of it
You did your homework. Good on you. That was kind of badass going this late in the season
it was cold but it was a great experience!
8.26 there's only one place in the world like that... every other place has its own unique beauty...and it's different every season and every natural event that happens to it...
the sierras are amazing!
Brilliant video, looks like a great place to hike and explore.
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it. And, yes, it's one of the most beautiful places on earth!
You guys don’t know how lucky you are. I love hiking, especially on and around the JMT. I make the trek annually. To have a hiking partner to share the experience with is not so easy, with busy schedules, differing personalities, hiking speeds and abilities, etc. thanks for sharing your experience.
we totally agree! thanks so much for watching the video. we're jealous you do the hike yearly!
Well done!! Obviously I discovered this video as I explore the possibilities of doing the JMT. Your video is very unique. There is a subtle but beautiful and well thought out video. I came to appreciate that you both do these extreme hikes full of life's ups and down and you both compliment one another amazingly.
Thanks for documenting this amazing experience and sharing this with the world. The itch has been given, God willing, I can hike the JMT with my autoimmune diseases.
Salud to you both, great job.
thanks for the kind compliments! good luck hiking!
So fun to watch!
thank you!
Great job guys
thanks!
Loved this. I also hike with my brother, even though we live in different countries this brings us together. Planning to do the JMT one day.
do it! you'll have a great trip!
Love the video guys, just did Rae Lakes Loop myself and Glenn Pass was quite the view 🙂
that loop is amazing
Love it.
thank you!
Fab, as always.
thank you so much!!
Amazing adventure.
thank you! glad you enjoyed it!
Great review.
Glad you enjoyed it
excellent video
thank you!!!
Really enjoyed that. You are lucky to have that bond with your brother, mine would prefer to hang out with his mates, the tosser. Anyway, well done, especially with those 45lbs packs!!!!!
Thanks for watching, Graeme! So glad you liked it!
Greetings from Scotland. 🏴🥃Well done lads. 👏A great film. I actually stay just down the road from Dunbar. We have the John Muir Way over here. Nothing as spectacular as across the pond tho. Got this recommended to me. I'll need to check oot your other films.
i'm dying to do a thru-hike in scotland. any recommendations?
@@HankLeukart The West Highland Way is the most popular hike in Scotland. 5 to 7 days Milngavie in Glasgow to Fort William. Then you could continue it if time allows to do the Cape Wrath Trail. Slightly more challenging & epic.
Great documentary. 👍
Glad you think so!
The California Miwok named it "Kayopha" the sky and the peaks that touch it!
I’m glad the pacific coast is the most beautiful 😻
we love the sierra!
What time of year did you do the trail? I didn't hear you mention it. I want to be sure to pack warm layers if necessary for my August/Sept 2023 trip. Thanks
our trip started September 25, which is considered past the end of the season. due to the fact that the risk of snow is very high and many services are closed, we don't recommend going that late.
You’re both very good looking brothers. ❤❤
thanks, meemee :) i'm the better looking one though
I loved this! I am planning my JMT trip this summer! Your video was by far the best i have watched for information. I am older and wanting to know what conditioning did you do get prepared? Do you feel you could have done more. I am starting now so I will be in the best shape I have ever been in. I did the sawtooth mountains last summer and it was insanely beautiful. Merry Christmas and thank you for your video.
Hi Kathy, Honestly, in my opinion, the best and only really good way to prepare and condition for a backpacking trip is to... do backpacking trips. No matter how many gym workouts I do, they never truly prepare me. But I did the 11-day Tour du Mont Blanc backpacking trip immediately before the JMT (with one day in between) and it made the JMT a true pleasure for me, because my body was SO ready for it. That's one reason you see my brother complaining in the video, it was annoying to him that I happened to be in such good shape (usually he's the one who is stronger than me!). So, if you can manage to do multiple weekend backpacking trips for a couple months before the JMT I think that will make you the happiest.
18:46-19:12 well done 😂😊🥴🏔️
nice relationship with the brother
You guys are hilarious! Love the video artistry too! So, you guys want to do the PCT in 2023?
thanks so much! i have considered doing the PCT...
ASIDE FROME THOSE SOUNDS... SOME CALL IT MUSIC,,, IT WAS A FUN VIDEO !!!!!!!!😊
Remember it's John Muir's The Range of Light!!!!
"Heaven knows that John Baptist was not more eager to get all his fellow sinners into the Jordan than I to baptize all of mine in the beauty of God's mountains." JOHN MUIR
I feel like I watched and loved this a while ago. Is it different than before?
I'm glad you liked it :) I had to replace the original due to a small number of mistakes I wanted to fix, but they were minor. So, no need to watch it again unless you want to!
You need to read some John Muir!
Not bad for a musical...
lol thanks
There are so many little lakes that you can scoop water for a shower, given that it can be pretty cold water?
You can bathe in the lakes and rivers, but we mostly did not because it was very cold when we did the hike. But in the heat of summer, they're perfect!
What month did you hike in?
Late September into early October, that's why it was so cold.
Is it unusual to have so little snow? You got lucky?
South Park goes hiking. Once I got to them singing The Sound of Music, I heard Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Then that's all I could hear the rest of the video.
interesting
Sorry if this was already asked what dates did you hike.
Early October
So what’s up with the camp fires? I thought they were verboten?
rules vary from year to year, from park to park, and at different elevations. we only made fires in places that were permitted at the time we did the hike.
Hello Hank, did you stay in touch with
Amelia?
You made a Beautiful Couple in the
Camino...
Saludos desde Dallas, Tx...
glad you enjoyed it! amalie and i have fallen out of touch but we had a great journey together
18:45 Are you shiiting me? Thats photo shopped right?
Okay, I see what you did. What time of year did you all hike this, fall, right?
i'm pretty sure you're the only person who has seen this video who has ever noticed that john muir easter egg lol. yes, we did this hike in early october. we recommend going earlier because it's very cold that time of year.
TUMANGUYO 14,505'
How much weight did u guys lose on this?
i'm not really sure and probably in the range of ~5 lbs because it's only a 2-3 week hike
i think john muir definitely lives up to his legendary status because he fought to protect these landscapes and make them accessible to all people
HARIBO Candys 😅 Greetings from HARIBO-City Bonn Germany. Do you know the meaning of the Brand-Name? It‘s HA ns RI egel BO nn. Hans Riegel was the founder of HARIBO 😊
had no idea! very cool
Mather with a proper "A" !
Correction: your comment was taken out of context! John Muir supported the indigenous people with his influence and money! Only a few sierra club (the real savages) tried to crucify Muir!
Could have done without the "noisy" music.
I had to stop watching this, it was like watching two little kids talking about their favorite lollies.
lol everyone loves lollies
Man I really disliked your comments, however well qualified, about John Muir (or anyone else of the time) and his "racist" beliefs...in 2022 this word has no objective definition and has no place in a hiking video. John Muir was not racist even by old standards. He made no "mistakes" nor did Ansel Adams (frankly I never remember seeing any people in Adams pics),,,this was a different time in evolution. NOT today. WE need to be aware of this horrible habit of ours and stop comparing ourselves to people of a hundred years ago. If for no other reason than it shows ignorance.
At the exact same time it was absolutely normal for parents of all races and backgrounds to not even name there babies or take any interest in their early lives until the baby proved it could survive past the age of about 5....noone talks about those "mistakes"
Sorry for the rant - This issue for me stood out. great hike and a great video and even better, when you get older you are going to thank your creator for taking this time together....Id do anything for more time with my east coast brothers. Peace.
