    I know I am late to the party, but just saw this after I ordered the Massca M2 kit. As for the collar adjustment of the drill bits, since the drill bits are not that expensive, why not order a few more bits and collars and set each one with the collar set to the correct depth for a particular size of board and label them as such. Then you just grab the right bit and you won't need to keep adjusting the collars for different width of board.

    Damn, yes they are exactly the same, but had I known I would of went with the Trend , just for the Bag and clamps.Nice thing about these jigs any hardware that the plastic blue brand has and their seems to be an abundance of , drill, driver bit, screws, clamps, pocket plugs all work with the Mascca and the Trend. Cheers pal, great review.

    Leave your Trend jig assembled and buy the Kreg R3 jig . It’s only about 30€ and you have extra drill bit plus drive and it has a depth stop built in to its box. Great little jig

    Very good review - clear and comprehensive. For the non-jig depth stop setting I can think of 2 options. One, pre-scribe simple markers of the shaft of the bit. “borrow” the approach from the Kreg system storage box to make a simple depth gauge.

  • @irishRocker1

    I was looking at the Kreg 720pro and Massca M2 Pro as I had seen them in videos. While looking for the M2 pro i came across this trend jig on amazon. Noticed as well that it was the exact same thing.
    Since every reviewer mentions possibly losing that depth setting piece, you could just use it to set the depth, drill a hole in your base to use that to set the depth in future and not have to take that piece out of the bag. Pick the side of the drill bit that is shortest distance to the depth guide and do it for each of the common thicknesses.

    Nice review. The problem with tear out is quite normal - the direction of rotation of the bit tends to lift up the timber on one side and on plywood it's usually much worse.
    The most common problem that I have with pocket holes is getting carried away and drilling the holes in the wrong place or on the wrong side of the board - easily fixed with a blob of glue, a length of 9 or 9.5mm dowel and a flush cut saw.
    Looking forward to the next instalment from the shed👍

    I’m in the US and got the cheap Kreg kit and it’s been great. I subsequently got two Kreg clamps... one of the face clamps like your kit has and one of the ‘peg’ type that is surprisingly good at keeping the pieces aligned.

    I have the M1 variant which doesn't have the outrigger supports, but I built a portable station for it with some small drawers for storing screws and the accessories with the base unit recessed into the top to provide supports to the sides. I do wish they offered the uprights separately so you could mount them to the plate permanently and switch between fixed and portable modes without having to unmount and disassemble the thing. I also had trouble clamping it to the workpiece in portable mode so stuck some fine sandpaper to it to give a bit of grip. Overall I really like it but like you say it does have some limitations.

    Hi John. I have the Kreg K4 which is basically the same. Don’t have any issues with it being made with plastic as opposed to metal. Only gripe is that the dust collection can only fit 1 way (and most times the wrong way) unlike the Trend which can be mounted 2 ways.

    Great video I get the same issue with the holes on the right hand side.
    I think it is a issue with the guide being missed milled as you have the same damage on the right side of the
    guide holes.
    I suggest just setting a small plate with all the drill bits lengths for when it is off the jig as it is the only way i found you can do it
    like the one you have for sharping chisels.

  • @robertivey3268
    @robertivey3268 Před rokem

    One thing I noticed when I was watching the video again, you said you can't lock down the extension pieces when using them as material support, but you can. All you do is move the knurled knob to the opposite threaded hole and then it locks down the part when used for material support. I have both the Kreg K5 and the Massca/Trend jig and both have their positives and negatives. The best thing about this unit is the all aluminum construction.

  • @johnfithian-franks8276

    Hi John, unless your jig works differently to mine (a possibility as mine is not a keg jig) you should be able to put the drill into the piece until it bottoms out on the separate steel piece you got with your system and then add the stop cullet. You should now have a set bit to work with the tool.

  • @SandyMasquith
    @SandyMasquith Před 3 lety

    Thanks John. I wonder if you can use the Kreg pocket hole drill bits with the Trend kit? Those bits leave a really nice clean cut. Although, like you said, doesn’t really matter! I think if you’re going to use the drill piece out of the jig a lot, you could set up a quick little jig to set the stop on the bit.

    Thanks - great video and super well explained. I bought this last week (Massca seemed to have a ridiculously high delivery charge to UK, so went with the Trend). One thing I’m not sure of is how to determine the length of screw to use. Setting for the piece of material to make the hole into is great, but what about the piece you are screwing into, what if I use too short a screw or worse, one that is too long. Anybody help with that?

  • @andrewknots
    @andrewknots Před 3 lety +2

    Big improvement on my 20 year old Trend jig, especially the inclusion of dust collection. Prefer the Kreg K5 because of the locking lever being on the same side as the drill slots so one is not streaching round the workpiece to secure it, and the K5 can be fitted with a guide for cutting plugs from extra stock at the same angle to fill and disguise the pocket holes, vs the tTend plug cutter which has to be used in a drill press (I have both)

    • @rickwilson478
      @rickwilson478 Před rokem

      Yeah, the work securing lever on opposite side from drilling direction makes this jig unusable for wider stock/ casework panels. Kind of a miss for them since the all aluminum construction is really nicer than Kreg!

    Thanks John. It's a bit odd that the metric scales are marked with the precise imperial equivalent rather than just 12, 14, 16 mm etc. Also, I'm not entirely sure why the depth stop is needed or so important (I've not seen any other jig with one, at most they come with a 'credit card' to just lift the tip of the drill above the base. Surely if you lift it much further (as the highest stair on the depth stop does) then you'll be leaving the screw to punch through a lot of timber without a pilot hole. Does this not risk splitting in softer timber, screw snapping in harder stuff and a general problem with the screw not pulling the two pieces together properly? Will

  • @michaeldonaldson4538

    Definitely the right choice to avoid the Kreg plastic stuff. Rather than separating your jig I would just pick up another small metal one to be used independently. Inexpensive and would save the hassle.

  • @monkeyking-self-proclaimed7050

    Does it have something to do with the drill bit? Can you use a universal bit to replace it?

  • @JFKreations
    @JFKreations Před 3 lety +1

    Well done John. I’ve had the Kreg K4 for a few years, it does the job, but you’re right the all metal build of the Massca is definitely a plus, probably more stable, accurate and durable than the Kreg. Not sure why Kreg insists on using so much plastic on everything they make. Ah well what can you do. For any of your viewers looking I would recommend skipping the Kreg and give this one a look. Maybe I’ll build a time machine in my shop and go back and buy the Massca instead.

  • @rickwilson478
    @rickwilson478 Před rokem

    What holds the drill block height adjustment so solidly? Are there detents for each height increment or internal plates connected to each knob that seat against the block? I am guessing there is something more than the inside edge of the tightening/ securing knob screws. Thank you, if you still see this so late to the discussion.

    I have the Fengsen XK1 pocket hole rig, but this looks much better. The XK1 is a bit like the Trend one after you dismantled it to make it into the portable version. It doesn't have any way to set the drill depth other than manually with your own spacer or measuring it.

  • @xris785
    @xris785 Před 3 lety +1

    For the depth of the bit, I’d probably take measurements of the common depths/positions of the collar set against the turret and then measure the stop on the bit. As you say a bit of a faff.

    These two PRO pocket hole jig kits, Mascca and Trend, might in fact be identical in every way possible except for the brand name, however, here in the USA the Trend is $306.15 plus tax from trend-usa website (shipping might be more $$), where the Mascca is $139.99 plus tax plus free shipping from Amazon. The Trend comes with the storage bag, maybe that's why the Trend costs more than double what the Mascca costs. Is the Mascca a lot more expensive on your side of the pond, or is the massive price difference the same for you as it is for us??

You can also buy directly from Massca and the prices tend to be the same as or less than Amazon. It's a bit funny as they say they're on sale, but I've had mine for about a year and every time I've been to the site they've been "on sale".

    I think the tear out on the right side of the holes is a problem with plywood, not the jig. As the drill turns clockwise the left side of the hole is where the edges of the bit enter the wood, the right side is where the edges exit the wood. Just like with a circular or table saw, where the cutting edges of a blade, or bit, exits plywood the face veneer will splinter or chip out.
