- I've gotten a fair amount of questions about installing Mill-Max hotswap sockets into PCBs, as well as some questions about the different types, so I've worked up a video about it.

Absolutely excellent video. I was dumbfounded when I read that hot-swap could be anything else than kailh sockets, but now I know how to solder them. In fact it seems that it is easier than kailh ones.
Very useful video on technique to load a mill max socket on PCB, now I've to learn how to remove soldered switches from existing PCB to convert into millmax :)
I can’t recommend this highly enough! An Iris with Mill-Max sockets is the best starter ergo board there is. I’m excited to be able to recommend the hotswapple Iris v5 when it comes out. (Hoping it’ll still have Alps/Mathias switch compatibility!)
Absolutely great video. You could also get some cheap 5 pin switches like a 10 pack of gat yellows, and use them for the soldering part, especially on the PCBs with multiple different switch options. I kind of fee like soldering is part of building a keyboard, but i also like hotswappaple switches so i already have a quefrency and levinson with millmaxes installed. The quefrency uses 7305 and levinson uses 0305, and i agree with you that id just recommend using the bigger one. I notice no difference on how they look, but they were loads easier to solder in place.
Regarding the video quality, your voice was really clear and i could really easily see what was going on, but i felt like there was too many pauses, and some of them lasted a tad too long.
All in all a great video!
Cool, glad you liked the video. I usually go with whatever cheap switch I've got around, like the gat yellows you mentioned or some old Outemu Ices I have around. I'm still playing around with the video production side of things, as for now, I tend to do things in a very raw and unscripted manner, but I hope to get better at that as I go along and record more videos. I'll also be recording from a separate mic in the future, since right now, I've been recording using my phone, and that picks up the noise from my 3D printer if I'm printing something.
Im trying my first board. The foldkb is ordered!! Thanks for the tutorial.
Thanks man! I might try this if I ever reconsider my switch choice for my one soldered PCB. :)
Great video. Convinced me to buy some sockets from you guys to finally give mill-maxing a try. Thanks for the info!
Glad this video helped!
ding! I'm going to have a go at mil maxing a murphpad, this is a good tutorial.
Lots of great info there. Thank you
Happy to hear it was helpful!
great vid bakingpy! i hope you'll make vids for the JNAO and DSP40! 🇵🇭
very helpful video 👍
Glad it was helpful! Cheers!
Thanks
This is fantastic.. have a couple v4 boards still waiting to be built.. may have to try this. I assume the v5 is still going to have these built in as well as rgb per key smd leds? E.g. we wont have to solder the hot swap or leds in right? Question.. how do you avoid solder going in to the hole when soldering.. especially for the smaller ones.. when you heat it up doesnt the solder pool enough before it cools to potentially go over the top and in to the hole?
I've rebadged the Rev. 5 to Rev. 6, which will have the RGB per-key and Kailh hotswap. To avoid solder from going into the hole, I use a finer soldering iron tip and thinner solder (.020").
I'm trying to use gateron browns to solder the millmax and one of the prongs is too wide for the socket. I broke two switches already. Anyone else seen this? I ordered cherry mx to see if I can socket them and then solder.
Is the tenting on the rev 7 customizable like the ergodox ez or is it a fixated tent
Found a Shop that sells them all. Surpisingly the 7305 are even more expensive than the 3305. Its only 2$ for 250, but still more.
that's like real cheap, care to send a link or something mans
@@kennshakeman6458 That was an year ago i have to search if its stiil there. I forgot where it was
@@kennshakeman6458 Sorry cant find it anymore. Every sit i looked on is more expensie.
Can I do this in a ducky one mini 2 non hot swappable board?
Yes
I bought some 0305 sockets and they won't fit in my pcb for a little bit space. Can I somehow "open" the holes on the pcb a bit?
Yes, you can take a pair of tweezers and rotate it inside of the hole for a bit to widen the hole enough for the socket to fit through
@@Keebio 🙏 thanks
Couldn't you use electrical tape to hold them down without using a switch and then solder them on without a risk of soldering your switch
If you got solder on the switch while doing this, then that means you would have gotten solder inside of the socket anyway and screwed it up.
I had to learn the hard way that I can't use Khail Sockets. :(
