- Heat and cooling running at the same time. Is your furnace working at the same time as your air conditioner? Or maybe the heating or ac is running non stop even if you turn your thermostat off? In this video I go over four reasons that could cause your heating or cooling to work at the same time and what you can do to figure out what is causing it. Bro...this vid saved me $200+. Was having this exact issue while running my AC. Followed these steps to the T, narrowed the issue down to the cable between the thermostat and control board, disconnected the the W wire from the control board and baba-bing! I'm no longer sitting in a hotbox. Thank you for what you do my guy.
I joined your blog a few weeks ago. I really enjoy it. I've always try to do my own fixing and maintenance on anything I can. Car - house - yard whatever. For my A/C new filters 2 or 3 mths. Clean A/C coils regularly etc. About 3 or 4 years ago my heater wouldn't come on. Couldn't figure it out and had to call a tech. Here's the rub. I've been in my attic more times than I can count (spkr wires - coax cables - antenna). The tech called me up to the attic and told me I needed an new furnace ($3K-4K) and of course he would get me a senior discount. Unit was about 12 yrs old. I noticed lots of stuff around the furnace that I had not seen earlier that day. He said it probably was rat droppings. I told him those were not rat droppings but not how I knew. I knew what they were and said I have to think about the new unit. He left and I went to work on fixing the unit. The droppings were bird droppings from the heater vent. I never thought about cleaning the vent pipe on a 90% unit. Perfect for warming a birds butt!. I was the owner of a pest control company for 35 yrs. I'm sure I will need a new unit someday but it wasn't then. I wasn't into youtube back then as I am now. My brother-in- law gave me some great advice when I was a teenager. "If something breaks try to fix it. It's already broke AT LEAST TRY! Maybe you will make it worse but that will be rarely." Sorry for the long post but maybe encouraging to another newbie.

Great job. As an 40 year seasoned HVAC-R technician and engineer, My idea of a perfect system includes running the a/c during the heating season controlled by a humidistat. The a/c will only run when the humidity exceeds the set humidistat bringing down the humidity. Between that and an added humidifier, you will maintain a perfect humidity at all times.

This is a great video with a solid, common sense approach to trouble shooting. This is very much the way that I trouble shoot these kinds of things but I have been trouble shooting all sorts of electronics for decades. To the guy who is not quite there yet, or someone who needs a refresher, this video simply could not have been better. Thanks for the help. Both the ac and heat were coming on.. its 88 degrees in my house and I am sweating bullets..100 degrees outside. Used the procedure you described. Not the thermostat. I jumpered red to yellow then red to white. Each time,both the ac and heat would come on.. first time I turned the system on this summer. Down to the furnace...found i had a chunk of wire fell and shorted w and y terminals.hence. problem solved. I am now waiting for my rooms to cool off. Thanks for the help!

Great video Jay. Do you have any idea what's wrong with my system when I turn fan to "circulate" mode. In this case, winter time, for example, heat turns on each time when fan kicks in and same time during summer season, my ac unit goes of each time when fan starts what creates house temperature way above settings on thermostat. Is it ok to install a trane outdoor unit to a carrier indoor unit ? Also is it ok to swap a 2.5 ton outdoor unit with a 3 ton outdoor unit and keep the same indoor unit ?
hi Jay - I found your channel when I started noticing a problem with one of my AC Compressor units (January/Winter, unit making a clicking sound for most of the day)....at any rate, your channel is awesome and love the way you explain things! One thing I wanted to do is see if you can help before I call a professional HVAC contractor. As I said one of my units (4 ton York Affinity AC compressor unit from 2013 is making a constant clicking noise for most of the day 12-15 hours on a January day). The AC mode has obviously been turned OFF since October 2019 in my location which is in NorthEast/NJ. I have no idea why it is making this clicking noise when the unit is OFF since October (AC function). Let me know if you have any thoughts on what to look for, or should I just call my local HVAC contractor. Thanks in advance!

Jay, thank you for all of your amazing content!! You explain things so well and have helped me so much!!! I have subscribed and shared your channel with many of my friends and co-workers. Now, I hope you can help me with an issue that I am facing: I recently installed an ecobee in my house and had to use the PEK kit as my thermostat did not have a c-wire. All seemed to be working well until i noticed that when my heat is on, my AC is also running. I changed the ecobee setting to let the HVAC control the fan instead of the thermostat and the issue went away. However, I did notice that when I have the heat on, and I reduce the temperature on the thermostat, the heat shuts off and then the AC kicks on for about a min and stops. Any idea what is going on here? I did trace the wires and I can confirm that I do not have a Y and a G wire crossed.

I have a separate furnace and ac/air handler.
Two red wires rh and rc, jumper removed and then the usual white, green, yellow and blue. My ac has been coming on while in heat mode. I've tried two other t'stats and get the same result. All wires have been cut back and stipped clean. Any ideas?
If just one out of 3 heat strips is coming on with the AC would you say it’s the heat strip itself?

U would just make u own small jumper between rc and rh..otherwise the thermostat can't control it..(rc is for ac..rh is for heat)
Both my cooler air conditioning thermostat and my water heater thermostat quit working at the same time last night. It must be a breaker? Everytime something goes wrong at my apartment is when the manager goes out of town on a weekend. Kinda like if you wash your car and then it rains but only enough to make your car dirtier than even before.

Are you saying you have a separate heating system from cooling, like a boiler for heat and air handler for cooling? Then, you remove the jumper from RH and RC and wire the R from the boiler to RH and the R from the air handler to RC. The Y from the air handler goes to Y on the thermostat and G to G. The W from the boiler to W on the thermostat. You'll also need a C from air handler, to power the WiFi thermostat. Except for modulating or communicating type of systems, a thermostat is a thermostat. They all have the same connections and do the same functions, like heat, cool, and fan. I just replaced a simple 4 wire thermostat with an Emerson Sensi, thanks to a rebate offer through my utility. I ran a new 8 wire )only buy 18ga solid wire, not phone wire or speaker wire) from the furnace to the thermostat, by cutting the 4 wire and attaching the 8 wire and pulling it through the wall. I wired the 2 stages of heat, fan, R and C, and Y1 between the thermostat and furnace. Even though thermostat wires are colored to the letters of the controls, they don't know what color they are, so make sure you connect the same wire to both sides. Many people make the mistake of putting white on one W but connect it to the other W on the other end, W1 to W2. I also wired W2 on the thermostat side and left it dead ended at the furnace. The thermostat has settings for 2 stage heat and cool, so I let it know I only have single stage cooling and it won't power the Y2. I plan to replace the condensing unit with a 2 stage later. I can also wire the humidifier through the thermostat, but I just installed an Aprilaire with digital controls, outdoor temp sensor, and it can humidify without heat on it's own. The thermostat can't do those functions or sync with the humidistat. I wanted extra wires, for any later add on, so I wouldn't have to replace the wire again.

I have a travel trailer...the furnace and the heat pump blower comes on at same time....is this how i would trouble shoot it?
Jay, we are experiencing this with a NEST. But the issue is *intermittent.* We have swapped the NEST out for an old school Honeywell. If this doesn't fix it, Gotta be the control board right? Seems I read somewhere the NEST has been know to cause this issue. Does this sound possible?? Thanks for the video.
I having the same issue with my Nest, When stage 2 of heat comes on it turns on the cooling also. When I removed the Y2 wire from the Nest thermostat only the heat runs. What did you find on your system if anything.

I'm supposed to have a damper system and 1 thermostat upstairs and another downstairs. If I want upstairs 70 and downstairs 68 it's supposed to adjust but it doesn't. I've had 5 HVAC companies out and none of them know how to fix it. Sometimes someone turns the air on upstairs not realizing heat is in downstairs, can that effect my unit?
Thanks for all of the informative videos you produce and share. I have a question that's a little more puzzling that I hope you can give your opinion on. What would you say is going on if you have a Furnace (not heat pump) and AC - - and you have a White Rogers Thermostat (1F95-1277) set on Heat mode, with Fan on Auto, and when the Thermostat calls for heat you get the following sporadic response: The Furnace turn on sequence initiates but you also notice that the AC runs for maybe 10-15 seconds and turns off - - with the furnace completing its normal heating sequence run. The AC issue described is sporadic and does not occure every time the Thermostate calls for heat and the furnace sequence initiates and runs. Your opinion on this issue will be appreciated. Thanks again.
Oh boy, that's an interesting one. I would start by ruling out the thermostat first by disconnecting the Y wire at the thermostat. If the problem stops, then you know that the thermostat is defective. If the problem continues then my guess would be that there is either a low voltage short somewhere or a bad control board in the furnace. These would be more difficult to pinpoint so I would likely be doing some investigating and head scratching even if I was there. 😅
Thanks for the response and the suggestions. It looks like my Thermostat has two Y wires connected to it: a Y wire and a Y2 wire connected to the Thermostat. So would you disconnect both Y and Y2 wires or just the Y wire? The HVAC system is 12 years old and I have never noticed this happening before. I was also wondering if it's the Thermostat - not sure how long they usually last? I noticed it about a week ago when I heard the A/C compressor running outside for maybe 10-15 seconds at the beginning of the heat call sequence and since then I think it reocuured just once (placed a paper on the AC unit housing outside and found it was blown off one morning on a non-windy day) with the furnace running multiple times every day. I took a pic of the Thermostat but I don't think I can attach it here. Thanks again - - I appreciate your input.@@WordofAdviceTV
@@strongspear1918 Sounds like you have a two-stage air conditioner. You would disconnect both Y1 and Y2 wires then. A simple test like this would at least determine if its the thermostat or not.
OK - - yes - I have a two stage furnace and AC. The furnace runs every day now with the cold temps and the issue has not reoccured since I contacted you (which is kind of weird) - - and I've been watching it every day. Yes. R is 24v power in and C is common.
relays or contactors of cooling should be interlock in the relays of heating to avoid two systems running at the same time.
But now you can run heat while cooling, to dehumidify without cooling, when you have single stage cooling only.
So does the inside unit (fan) and outside unit come on at the same time when in Cool mode???
In the cooling cycle, inside (fan) and outside unit (compressor and condenser fan) should come on together. When thermostat is satisfied and shuts off the outside unit, the inside fan will generally continue to run for a short time to utilize any cooling effect remaining in the evaporator coil (the inside unit). On the heating cycle, the inside fan will not come on immediately, but waits for the heat exchanger in the furnace to reach a minimum temperature before activating the fan. This happens so the fan is not blowing cold air into the home. As with the A/C cycle, the fan will operate for a short time after the thermostat is satisfied to remove residual heat from the heat exchanger.
What about a stuck contactor?
I have this issue today. Changed thermostat but heat/ac keep coming on at the same time (when it's calling for cool) . It's a gas pack so I'm pretty sure the issue is either with the wiring or it's the board itself.
Hello bro, i would like to request a video about how to connect an outdoor thermostat for the low winter temperatures control, to control the heat pump cut out when temperatures are below balancing point and force the furnace to run. thankful regards

I believe if you jumper r to c then that will blow a fuse and the next thing would be the xfmr, then tstat (if its a nest) or board. I jumpered r to c to test if it blew a fuse or not on my own bryant furnace and the xfmr died first and the fuse didnt blow
P.S. Us Techs hate the nests. They aren't "technician friendly" lol
Hi!!Iam installed new termostat and when iam turn on a/c furnance starts too,but when turn on furnance a/c not start!!I its emerson wifi termostat and I am exchange 3 of them because thought they are defective!!!I have two termostats in my house so regular emerson termostat not cousing any problems system running as suppose byt as soon iam replace it with same brand just wi fi termostat it start acting weird!!!Could you please help to resolve this problem?,Not so far ago iam replaced control board ,but as I mentioned before problems coming up only with wi fi termostat!!Thank you
It would be helpful to expand on the connection between the transformer and the control board. No 120v to transformer from control board means what ?

What if I don’t have a W terminal
So my furnace ac/heat pump unit yesterday came for some reason , outside -15f , but my furnace will run normally and use propane to heat so will go on and off as normally , but same time heat pump will run constantly without stopping, after furnace would heat house shuts off , but then in finance inside I could hear the humming noise so loud , and outside fan with heat pump will run and bring heat inside , the line that comes inside it’s super hot , this was strange bec heat pump never came on on below temp , so tried all this didn’t work , turn completely ac power and still will run , so I decide to open heat pump power supply cover , so I went and tap on fan switch or whatever it’s called and luckily fan and heat pump shuts off and fan switch goes off , so I have no idea why this happened, I do know that sometimes when it’s sunny outside heat pump starts for couple sec it goes off since it’s below temp , but my guess is that maybe yesterday got stuck from moisture maybe for some reason , just thought to share my experience if someone has same problem , next week supposed to be above 30 so that’s usually runs with heat pump and I’ll see if it works properly

I work in apt. And heat strip and condensor came on simultaneously but no fan, Good thermostat, good wire, new contact. Turns out It was ECM module in the blower that was bad; even tho I just replaced it a couple months ago. It tripped me up for a while
Hi jay! I got a 30yr old york split system,,my furnace blower motor keeps running,i isolated the tstat,replaced capacitor,spark ignitor & relay,still runs,i disconnect the common wire goin to capacitor & it stops,can it be transformer thats bad?
i have little of experience. 30 yrs old Furnace has high consumption and its time to be replaced saving 500 dollars a tear on energy beside head ache of maintenance.
Sorry to hear about the problematic furnace! If it's 30 years old it likely does not have a control board right? And you already replaced the fan relay? (that would be my first guess) Besides the two wires that go to the capacitor, where do the other wires from the motor go?
@@WordofAdviceTV the other 2 wires go to blower motor,no control board on it,system works great its just that issue,yes i replaced fan relay already still same issue,i have to turn off from breaker to stop motor from running
@@justdissin7340 I wonder if perhaps your fan limit switch on the furnace is stuck in an open position.. Is it an adjustable kind? Perhaps you can try adjusting it or some of them will have a button that you can push/pull to turn fan on/off. Otherwise you could try giving it a slight wack to see if it frees it up. I'm just guessing though... I wouldn't be able to tell you exactly what it is without checking it, sorry.

One more reason is your contractor is stuck in the shut position causing your condensing unit to run all the time.
I have one thermostat in my living room another thermostat in the hallway. The hallway is my heater the living room is my AC. My problem is a AC runs for a while then the heater kicks on and heats the back part of the house.
My thermostat set at 80* said heat on but furnace is not turn on is that indicator as bad thermostat but when I reset the power at the furnace the furnace turn on

How much do you want for the Rheem circuit board? Lol. Not a bad job of explaining how to diagnose the problem. Your control board in yours is common, very similar in design to older Rheem boards, but with a plastic cover over it. BTW, taping over drive/S cleats is unnecessary. The amount of leakage is negligible, unless of course it's whistling. That annoys the hell out of me. That, and too thin of duct. People using 30ga sheets for plenums and drops should be shot and left in the desert!

Good video. But, you talk so much with your hands that it distracts from what you are saying. I think you commented in another video about this. I didn't think it was too bad then. But now, When you are waving your hands around it gets to be hard to follow what you are saying.
I totally removed the thermostat and the heat and fan just stayed on.....I'm talking wires (not touching) but totally removed from the old thermostat.
