- I Bought a Refurbished Xbox One X From Wish.com - Was it a Rip Off? I paid $319 for a refurbished Xbox One X from Wish.com. The packaging was good and the cords and controller seemed to be in new or like new condition. The console itself looked new (no scratches) but when I updated it the resolution went to 720p and I couldn't get it to change back. I decided to replace the HDMI retimer/redriver chip because I've found that resolution issues like this in Xbox One X consoles are most often cause by these chips being faulty. (However, after replacing the chip I discovered that my HDMI switch was malfunctioning and it's possible that was the cause of the resolution problem.)

About This Video: I paid $319 for a refurbished Xbox One X from Wish.com which is cheaper than the $400 or so they charge for a new one. However, since most stores are sold out of new Xbox One X consoles this might actually be a pretty good way to go. Everything was packaged very well and the cords and controller seemed to be in new or like new condition. The console itself looked new because I didn't see any scratches but when I was getting it updated the resolution went to 720p instead of 1080p and I couldn't get it to change back. I've found that resolution issues like this in Xbox One X consoles are most often cause by a faulty HDMI retimer/redriver chip so replacing that chip is what I tried first. After replacing the chip I discovered that my HDMI switch was malfunctioning and it's possible that was the cause of the resolution problem. That's why it's always a good idea to check your connections as part of diagnosing game console issues. - Jak na to + styl
I just finished filming TWO more paid courses (Hot air and micro soldering courses) that will be available in the next couple weeks! I'll announce them in my community tab when they are ready.
Have you ever been ripped off buying from Wish?
In india their is no product delivers by wish
the tweezers set link(the seperate one) isnt working.
Over in the UK it is a standing joke that if you order something from Wish...... It takes a lifetime to arrive, I'd expect a Commodore 64 arriving soon!!
TronicsFix I ordered a 3ds off of wish and they had forgot to put the ribbon cables back in the slot they belong in, and that’s how I’m usually banned from Nintendo online services for modding right after I started modding it and putting pirated games on it
Put a link in the video description ;)
I loved the reassembly. It's way better then the normal montages you do
Love hearing that! I'm trying to change up the reassembly parts as according to my audience retention graph a lot of people skip that part anyway.
Same
Sameeee
@@Tronicsfix love that too. Fast, clean and beautiful. :D Good job man!
I literally went to comment to say the same. The finger snap was OP
I'm convinced someone just raided a storage facility and is selling these all stolen.
That's what my mom said when i showed her an item on Ebay,an older generation dell m6800 (usually selling for 400+ euros)listed for 70 euros. but this computer was already 5-6 years old at this moment, but because it was brand-new in box she thought it was stolen. never seen a deal that good on this model ever since
not quite, you can see this xbox one X is missing a sticker tab on the front, and that the heat sink copper pad is damaged.
this is likely a unit which failed QA testings and was sent to be scrapped but never was scrapped - which is VERY common to see these type of units from all range of electronics all over the electronic markets in China.
another good examples are "refurbished" smartwatches and handheld game consoles.
in China, over 80% of these are actually products which failed QA and someone stole from the factory.
the only exception for that would be Apple products - in that case the workers would steal individual parts which fail QA tests and sneak them out to be sold in the electronics market - some sellers would bulk manufacture "premium refurbished" iPhones from these parts to be sold in the markets for at least half or a third of the price of a brand new product.
most times parts would fail QA for various dumb reasons, for example Samsung would fail a display in their QA tests if the display is not exceeding a certain amount of brightness and JBMA uniformity - the display essentially works just fine but it is not as bright as samsung specifies or the backlight uniformity is not above a certain percentage (i'd guess in smartphones that would be 99%?).
so for example samsung would essentially throw a fully functioning working display to be scrapped because its backlight produces 520 nits instead of 580 nits and its JBMA uniformity is at 95% instead of 99%.
would you notice that this display's brightness is not that bright like a "new" display? maybe if you put it side by side with the new one, but uniformity? yeah you will never notice that... especially not in a display that is this small.
so these displays end up being sold in the electronic markets as replacement OEM parts or they are being sold to sellers which use them to refurbish/build a "refurbished" phone to sell.
From what I've seen wish sells broken stuff or fakes
O I used to be a manager at a warehouse before covid lost me my job at a warehouse and I bought one it’s the same way they’re just probably putting shells on refurbished hard drives that’s what they did we had these in bulk because Xbox is selling these to make room for the series x because they don’t want them both on the market at the same time they’re discontinuing these.

One thing I always enjoy with this channel, he explains it in such a way a complete beginner can understand, but also in a way people who are knowledgeable dont feel like it's been dumbed down any. A great personality and traits to do this job.
God level bravery giving Wish any more than £1.99...
I'm well impressed 😊
this was an excelent case of: if it ain´t broke, i´ll fix it until it is
Ha, ha...exactly!
I tried to open my PS3 to do maintenance and i broke the power supply connector
@@_Not_Retarded Same. Was trying to fix sticking disk drive. Thankfully ps4s are way easier to maintain as long as you got that t9 security bit or driver lol
Only 720p? Ok lets open, retrace all the solder joints, change de CPU/GPU combo and add just the perfect amount of thermal grease.
Then you find out it was only a faulty 20 bucks hdmi switch. I love you man.
Retimer chip really isn't that hard of a job though if you have the right tools and know what you're doing. Its actually a quick fix
Anyway xbox is aware of this kind of issues, so xbox has an option to manually set the type of conection you have disabling the auto detection of hdmi, needed for some old TVs and Hdmi switches
🤣
The console is in even better condition after that
@@_Not_Retarded No, that's not the case.
Hey, for the part about it not changing back to 1080p, if you go around the those settings there's an option to switch from Auto-Detect (which detects what your tv/monitor can use), or you can select DVI or HDMI and manually choose the settings.
The resolution is caused by the output being automatically set as DVI. Common issue, and fortunately just a setting issue not hardware related.
then if that's the case the settings were probably set for the refurbishers tv and stored in the chip
@@lemau8458 most likely, yes. Or sometimes the HDMI signal from the TV isn't correctly interpreted by the console, thus leading to a DVI output of 480p
Can it be set wrong and not display evidence of it?
I love how smooth that was 6:43
i know the deal about these refurbished units. basically the faulty consoles in warranty that are sent to microsoft are just replaced, not fixed, and then the defective units go to recycling centers all new in box (because the warranty need you to put them in the box) and then they just take parts from like 2-3 xboxes to make a working one. my dad would do this in his free time but with playstations, (buy them for 30 or 20 dollars a pop from the recycling center making 1 out of 2 work and then selling it as new). the most money he made was when he would get faulty xbox 360 devkits do the same and sell them
Speaking of devkits, modern vintage gamer is expertising on those
Whoa
@12345 12345 in romania, but every month a new recycling center gets them. we call them ,,cutii,, the recycling center with ps4s changes everymonth, im not sure if they run out of them or they are trying to avoid legal issues, most of the centers are around bucharest or in random cities like slatina or whatever, i will not disclose the exact locations because we dont want any competitors and we make a preety penny out of it. also think about the respect i get when i give ps4s as birthday present to my friends and colleagues. you can talk to the people around your area and ask them if they get consoles
@@bitelaserkhalif i dont have any working 360 devkits anymore, they all unfortunately died i dont really know why because like they all kinda died in the same period because my dad kept getting phone calls from people saying their consoles died

It's a pretty good standard
Legit all he had to do was go over twice and download, press a and click hdmi then go back and he would prob even have 4k
Ooft, schoolboy error. I'd always double check using a 2nd cable and direct in before going any further. Been bitten by overcomplicating it the past myself. Glad you showed you're not infallible.
Not about this video but I had a hdmi cable attached to my sons TV from the dvd and every time he switched the dvd on the TV would switch off, replaced the cable and it was fine
I like the longer disassembly/ reassembly vids. Definitely keep doing them on occasion. For those of us that may want to attempt what you do.
Nice editing 👍

He is. I’ve fixed both my PS4 and Xbox one and even two Nintendo joy cons just from watching his videos.
Just get a playstation won't have to fix them so much ah
@FadeD just saying xbox isn't got the quality as playstation people don't like people like you who judge them without even knowing someone I have a ps4 and a xbox one just think ps4 is better your the one who needs to get a life and stop judging other people on there opinion

@FadeD you're the one who's bringing competition in to this now by saying get a pc aha😂
It’s kinda amazing how people do this, I never knew I would end up modding and repairing Nintendo consoles or xboxes, but anyways nice video mate, I started modding and repairing when I started watching your channel😎
I just repaired my home cinema set, I would have never touched it before watching the video's on this channel. It's a great start to start to repair something.
Tronicsfix, your HDMI issue is usually caused by a non OEM HDMI cable. My Xbox one s had that issue that I fixed by using the OEM cable. But yeah, great video man!
I think that's a common problem if you get used to repair this kind of stuff on a daily base ^^ why checking the easiest solutions if it is no problem to you changing that chip instead :D Love your videos - it's always nice to watch you repairing stuff. Greetings from Germany and keep on the good work! Inspiring!
I was just having a look at your soldering course and the equipment needed. Really appreciate you provided free courses! Was just wondering if you're thinking of having affiliate links to Amazon UK? As a lot of the items on Amazon US aren't available where I live. Cheers
Yes...I'm going to try to make the links universal soon so more countries will be included.
Dude, you're such a pro at repairing videogame consoles, I've been watching you for awhile now and you never fail to impress. Cheers to you my friend! :)
I LOVED those edits you did for the reassembly. It makes it look like you just literally threw everything together and it connected up like magic!
Happend to me too. Wanted to try and fix my Wii U Gamepad because I thought, the charging port was bad.. well.. after taking lt apart and look at the port I saw nothing susplcious and cleaned the GamePad. After reassembling I put it away. A few days later I re-arranged some stuff and saw that the charging cable was heavily damaged.. even the copper wires where showing.. I felt so dumb😅 btw: I love the reassembling montage. It looks very cool but I think there's plenty of work andvideo editing behind this. Thank you for that.
I saw a 200$ Xbox one x gears of war edition on a Facebook group for my city who sells stuff, but I didn’t know whether I should of taken the risk and resell it, it was good condition too
I had this very same video output issue with My Xbox One X. It was stuck at the lowest resolution on my 4K TV. I connected it to a 1080p display then reset the video output by holding eject and power buttons for a few seconds and was able to change it to 1080p. I then connected it to my 4k Display and was able to select 4K video output. Did not have to re-solder anything.
Loving the videos! Fantastic editing on the reassembly, loved it! I dig the idea of your console repair school, going to look into that for sure!
6:46 Whoa, getting fancy with the editing. I like it!
One of the most disgusting things people do is hoard information due to fear and greed, thank you for going against the grain.
but that gets him paid on here.
I love the fact that you could have made this up to 10 minutes and you didn’t, shows you do this to give information and not just for the money!
I've also noticed issues using a hdmi switcher on xbox one consoles recently every time I've repaired one. Is it possible something in the latest update is causing issues?
Whatsup. Really enjoying your stuff. I’ve been a truck driver and in transportation management for years andwanting to get into electronic repair. I sent you my Xbox 1x and had it repaired. I recently picked up some monitors for cheap on auction. Some look fine but no power. Wondering if monitors in this state are repairable and worth my time. Thanks for the content and info!
6:43 That was amazing! nice
Those courses are super cool! Thank you for doing this! I imagine it's a lot of work but it's very appreciated!
Yep...lots of work but I mostly enjoy it.
I started with the Dualsense teardown and now I'm watching everything. This is quality stuff Tronics 👍
You did all of that and in the end you figured it out the problem was HDMI Switch.that was great lesson for all of us to check cables and switchs before starting to repair.indeed i love your videos and skills
The resolution problem was caused by a bug that can be easily fixed by changing the auto-detect video to DVI and then back to auto-detect.
I loved that creative work on the reassembly of the console. That was pretty cool!
I'm really surprised you didn't try to change the cable or check the HDMI hub when you saw the 720p problem!!!
But hey, you have to fix it till it's broken so I get it :D
Hey Tronics, great video, you opening various consoles and handhelds showing the motherboard and other inner parts, such enjoyable content, thank you. :) PS: Will you ever take a Raspberry Pi apart and do a teardown video for the upcoming PS 5? :D
Yeah, I've over-diagnosed things before too. ;P
There's this saying in the medical industry that goes something like "when you hear hooves, think horses not zebras" which translates to check for the most common problems first.
You could have also done the hdmi override in the settings and it would have let you put it in 1080p
Wow now you have a site to teach repairs man thats sweet i try sometimes to follow your repairs. Cant wait to use your site champ you rock.
i love your videos, but i have question abot extremerate xbox remap, did it work?
That’s the resolution when someone reset screen only by holding power and disk open button at same time
$319 seems like a decent deal. It would have been even better if it was $300-310 but I can't complain. Great video as always!
Considering the prices these are going for rn it wasn't too bad of a deal.
Sandy Forrest lol it’s a really good deal because originally it costed 500 but since the series x is coming out I expect it to be lower then 400
So paying $10-$5 less is a better deal? No wonder consoles are meant for very low budget gamers. Yes, I own a $1650 hp omen (i7 10th gen w/ rtx 2080) gaming laptop and a ps4 pro that I happily paid over $500 for it.
