I mean I'll definitely be willing to say it's a tie but the competition is based off of the product not how you get them the product. I think it would be fair though to give them the option of the forged in fire forge over home forge. There was an episode I believe the guy won but he made a makeshift coal forge out of a old satellite dish and a hair dryer so regardless of what you have you can still come out on top

      I agree considering that Gabe's "home forge" is his fathers professional shop that's been running since the late 80's. The difference between these guy's two home forges are so far apart I am so impressed that Clarence was able to make a sword that save for being off slightly on blade geometry, fit and finish made a sword that competed at the same level as Gabe's is beyond outstanding. If Clarence's home forge had a gas fired forge and a power hammer, I'm sure he could have had time to make the fit and finish up to Gabe's level and it would have been neck and neck.

    For anyone wondering about Gabe, he's actually been trained as a Japanese smith - hence his somewhat on-point attire. In 2006 he studied abroad for semester abroad at Tokyo International University in Saitama, Japan. After 2007, he managed the incorporation of Dragonfly Forge LLC, with his parents, and helped with the foundation of Dragonfly Forge’s formal swordsmithing school, Tomboyama Nihonto Tanren Dojo (Dragonfly Mountain Japanese Sword Forging School).
    So as cringy as he may seem, he really does have the proper experience and training to at least justify it. Also I think his Viking sword was a lot better than Clarence's; you just have to look at the general fit and finish of both weapons to see that Gabe's was of a higher quality all around. Though I'd certainly hope that Clarence continues his work and gets some better equipment in the future, I think he's got a lot of drive.

    Wow this is my favourite one so far. Both men did an incredible job.
    I am super impressed by Clarence’s result given his equipment but at the end of the day, he knew what he had when he entered the competition.
    Gabe’s sword was slightly better and the competition is judged on the result, not the path taken to achieve that result.
    I hope to see Clarence again, he is an excellent bladesmith. Both men are excellent bladesmiths. Good job fellas!

  • @Leightr
    @Leightr Před 3 lety +2

    So as a VERY amateur smith I have made three viking-style swords, and like Clarence (apparently) did, I started with about 15 inches of leaf spring that I drew out with four pound hammer to 26 inches. On the last one I timed myself and it was about 10 hours of hammering just to forge it to shape and hammer in a rough bevel. Not all at once of course, after about three or four hours my fingers start to give out so it was spaced over several weekends. All of which is to say that I am stunned by the amount of work he did in that short amount of time. The energy he expended had to be on par with a an triathlete or ironman competitor.

    • @clarencejackson4666

      It was a lot of work. And they of course couldn't show that the power hammer I had access to wound up being denied just before the show, I'd bursted blisters and so my hands were a bit torn through the whole forging, I had to drive to like Alabama, or Mississippi for coal and back to Florida one of the days before shooting and I was beat down exhausted. I real John Henry situation! It was painful, but wonderful.
